TACFLEET Notes

The Tholian Sapphire-Class Heavy Cruiser (or at least its hull design) has been in service for at least sixty years (and possibly much more) yet Starfleet records indicate that it has steadily improved in performance without Starfleet ever being able to clearly identify one model from another.

One of the only two Tholian warship types regularly seen outside Tholian space as it conveys Tholian diplomats and ambassadors to, from and through Federation Treaty Space, its flat diamond shape is a relatively common sight on certain shipping lanes.

As such it is one of the two best-known ships, performance and capability-wise, since there have been several occasions over the years when various forces have attempted to destroy or disable them in order to learn more about them. In every recorded instance, the Tholian Web was deployed and was able to either force a rapid retreat or to immobilize the attacker. In some instances, the attacker was drained of all power and then left, in others the attacker was destroyed by the phasers and torpedoes.

Relatively slow with no sign of any D-Warp capability, the ship must 'plod' through Warp. Whilst believed incapable of cruising at Warp Nine, there is no reason why it could not 'sprint' at Warp speeds ranging from 9.3 to 9.6 but that is only conjecture. Its phasers appear underpowered and lacking in range but once a target is immobilized and power-drained by the Tholian Web, this becomes much less an issue. The phasers are certainly powerful enough to destroy an unmoving, unshielded ship without a working SIF.
