. Star Fleet Naval Forces, Vessel Star Fleet Naval Forces exist foremost to explore, conduct scientific inquiry, maintain interstellar presence, and execute the operational missions of the Federation through its commissioned vessels. Vessel billets therefore constitute the largest single platform category, encompassing shipboard command, operations, engineering, sciences, medical, logistics, support, and other functions required to maintain a continuously operating interstellar fleet.
ii. Star Fleet Naval Forces, Orbital Facility Starbases, space stations, outposts, supply depots, communications relay stations, and other orbital facilities provide the distributed network of ports, logistics nodes, command centers, scientific installations, and support activities necessary to sustain interstellar operations. Because individual sectors may encompass vast areas of space, orbital infrastructure is strategically dispersed and frequently represents the principal permanent Star Fleet presence within a sector.
iii. Star Fleet Naval Forces, Shore Installation A substantial planetary infrastructure supports the operational Fleet through education, research, medicine, engineering, construction, administration, personnel management, logistics, training, communications, and other institutional functions. Although Star Fleet is principally an interstellar service, many of the organizations that generate and sustain Fleet capability are most efficiently maintained upon established planetary installations.
iv. Star Fleet Marine Corps, Shore Installation Star Fleet Marine Corps force structure is predominantly planetary. Marine bases, expeditionary installations, training activities, aviation facilities, and joint-force bases with Star Fleet or allied forces provide the principal locations for force generation, training, sustainment, and garrison operations. Shore billets therefore constitute the majority of permanent Marine assignments.
v. Star Fleet Marine Corps, Orbital Facility Marine formations maintain substantial permanent garrisons aboard strategically significant orbital facilities. Capital starbases may support division-scale Marine formations, while Class II and Class III facilities commonly support regiment- and battalion-scale organizations respectively. These forces provide installation defense and rapidly deployable expeditionary capability capable of dispatching formations ranging from company-sized elements through Marine Expeditionary Units and larger formations as required.
vi. Star Fleet Marine Corps, Vessel Marine detachments embark aboard selected Star Fleet vessels according to vessel type, mission, and operational requirement rather than as a universal component of every ship's complement. Destroyer, escort destroyer, and frigate classes may embark several platoons or a company; cruisers and related vessels may support multiple companies; and battleships, command battlecruisers, carriers, and other major capital vessels may embark battalion-sized or larger Marine formations.
