TACFLEET Notes

Introduced as a replacement for the veteran B'rel-class Bird-Of-Prey Scout, this recent design re-establishes the Klingon design ethos for fast, maneuverable, sub-light interception vessels. Now in its second design variant, the H2-Class is a formidable vessel to deal with at close range.

Although over three hundred B'rel Birds-of-Prey are still in service with the Klingon Defense Force, the well-designed, efficient, and most importantly simple to manufacture Qa'teq Bird-of-Prey is being found at more and more forward Klingon outposts, as well as performing patrol duties around the Klingon Empire Worlds closer to Qo'nos.

Slightly lighter than the end of the line D19-Class B'rel, the new ships are larger in internal volume. Advances in materials and structural rigidity provide some savings, but the latest Klingon Structural Integrity Field and Inertial Damping devices now rival the best that Federation Shipyards can produce.

Not especially fast in terminal speeds, the Qa'teq has good warp efficiency for a small ship, and can comfortably keep up with most GALAXY Variants, and even outpace a THUNDERBOLT over distance. This efficiency also shows in in-warp acceleration; at cruise warps, it is the best known non-Federation vessel.

Like the corvette, the Qa'teq Birds-of-Prey concentrate on high sub-light power-to-weight ratio, coupled with the low-lag IDF systems, to give outstanding sub-light acceleration and excellent maneuverability.

Reasonably well armed, a Qa'teq can defend itself from all quarters in and out of warp. As befits Klingon vessels, however, it is strongest at close range, facing its adversary. Klingon tactical weaponry has always been dangerous at worst, and a single Qa'teq can pose a nasty threat to vessels as large as cruisers. Class 9 pulse disruptors and T'Ika tactical photon torpedoes are not to be dismissed because of their short range.

The latest teqSo'wI'-Class cloaking device appears exceptionally sturdy from initial reports. The machSo'wI'-Class fitted to the early H1-Class Qa'teq appears to have been withdrawn, continued problems with plasma-coil defects allowing an ionic-radiation burst to automatically cloak and drop shields - a tactical nightmare for Klingon Captains. A handful of H1-Class Qa'teq Birds-of-Prey remain unrefitted.
