TACFLEET Notes
Patrolling slowly, stalking the battle before it has begun, Negh'var-class Dreadnoughts have been the harbinger of defeat for many enemies of the Klingon empire.
The most massive and heavily armed ship of the Klingon Defense Force, in times of peace these massive vessels are the warrior ambassador ships of the fleet. To have one's lowly defensive outpost visited by a Council member or General commanding a Negh'var is to be truly honoured. To meet one in close combat is doom.
Adequately rapid for their size, the Negh'var is generally escorted into the thick of battle by an array of lesser vessels. When the enemy is considered dangerous, Negh'var will join attacks. When the enemy is considered deadly, even Klingons observe caution. A Negh'var will spend much time patrolling as command-level strategic decisions are made. The number of officers on board a Negh'var configured as a Command Battleship will rise to as many as 300, although this is usually highly fluid as Captains will take command of vessels travelling to the frontline. When the Negh'var arrives, as many as two-and-a-half thousand troops can beam out in minutes.
Power usage is not something much thought of when in the heart of the battle. A Negh'var has two large reactor cores, and its impulse reactors are designed to provide 40% of their energy directly to weapons dedicated plasma conduits under normal operating conditions. A curious arrangement of impulse exhausts is necessitated by the vessel's bulk. The forward engine provides braking thrust and also a high yaw rate if required. While this can turn the ship around quickly if necessary, it does not make the nine-million tonne leviathan any more nimble in normal sublight maneuvers.
Recent revisions have produced the N5 evolution of the vessel, and it is known that all twenty of the Negh'var are to be refitted to the N5 spec. The revisions include the advanced to'peng and Duppeng-class torpedoes, and uprated IDF and SIF fields to allow marginally better maneuverability.
All Negh'var are armed as might be expected. Ability to fight any enemy at any range is granted by as formidable an array of weaponry as any of the major powers' dreadnoughts. Strategic strikes may be launched from out of reach with Duppeng torpedoes, followed by to'peng launches, and the possible deployment of forty jach-Class interceptors. At closer range, first, phase disruptor banks discharge, followed by rapid fire cannons in turrets at each corner of the ship and around its middle.
Being lined up for attack is a daunting proposition. The N2 Negh'var introduced the four cannon missing from the N1 prototypes. At close range, a single sustained shot perpendicular to the saucer of a Galaxy-class or derivative would pierce the shields and vapourise a hole through the ship. Instantaneous firepower is equivalent to the X+ phaser bank array at the weapons research facility at Starbase 12. It is noted, however, that the power grid of the ship cannot supply enough energy to run a cannon in a continuous beam. Individual capacitance banks give a thirteen-second 'magazine' before a complex cooling and recharge cycle. Running the cannon in bursts is known to improve matters; latest intelligence suggests as many as thirty one-second-on, one-second-off pulses are possible.
