FD-12 are the shielding systems used on Federation Battleships of the ZEUS class Station shields are usually divided into semi-independant and overlapping sectors. Starbase OMEGA has 24 sectors approximately 1200m long, divided into quadrants around the station. It is possible for shields to fail in a single quadrant and to cover quadrants with weakened extended shields from neighboring quadrants. This gives the station the distinctive look not generally seen in modern station construction, that of a number of rings of modules arranged around a hollow core. Fundamentally, the station is a cyliner of 722.8m radius. Shuttle docks run down the core of the station. from C&C to about half-way through the business section. The ship docks are divided into Star Fleet (military) and Civilian sections by bulkheads and the sections have separate external space doors for access. With the advent of artificial gravity generators on the station, the engineering sections were immediately connected via a long, limited access corridor to the command sections. These corridors house a number of turbolifts and access both engineering and , though separate lifts, a new brig section built forward of engineering in an effort to make the brig more secure by isolating it from most other sections with habitable environment. Gravity generatos are used only to balance the gravity on all decks to 1 Earth-standard gravity as opposed to the 0.7-1.1 variation due to rotation. Most quarters are located in the 0.9-1.1 g section so that minimal disruption is created if the gravity generators go offline. Starbase ALIGHIERI was first modified from the base design by the addition of a communications relay in the central core of the station. This relay was intended to allow high-power subspace signals to be sent back towards the center of the Federation. Because of the very high power signal boost, nearly a month could be cut off transmission time, making communication in five months rather than six possible. With the greater use of dimensional-warp courier ships which cut message relay time to a mere 7 days, the system was still used until recently as a communications relay along the frontier. A ring of docking pylons was later added to the station as it served as a repair and refit facility for ships operating on the frontier. When emphasis shifted from DS-230 to DS-239 because of the latter's more extensive use as a trading facility, staffing levels on DS-230 were reduced. When INDIGO Fleet was assigned to the frontier, DS-239 was chosen to become Starbase OMEGA and was extensively refitted. DS-230 fell into disuse and staff was reduced to minimal levels. When the Dante System activities heated up, the base was towed into the system to act as a command post for the Dante Expeditionary Force.
