Notes:

The design for the GALAXY-class starship has changed little since the days of Captain Jean Luc-Picard, who commanded on of the first ships of this class, USS ENTERPRISE, NCC-1701-D. Systems upgrades have made this spaceframe viable dispite its nearly fifty (50) years in service. In 2343, the GALAXY Class Project was approved. This project bore its first fruits when the USS GALAXY was launched in 2358.

The MAGELLAN-class modification of the GALAXY-class spaceframe is intended to give the spaceframe greater endurance in extended missions. The main differences are in the use of internal space. The MAGELLAN-clss GALAXY spaceframes devote more internal area to ships stores, converting unused space into cargo areas and more efficiently organizing laboratory and science spaces to minimize wasted space. Some of these modification resulted in the repositioning of certain shipboard systems and an altered weapons array. The sum total of all modifications resulted in a slight increase in displacement over the standard GALAXY-class vessels while keeping the MAGELLAN class lighter than the OLYMPIC-class command varient.

Note that because of its extended science missions in uncharted regions, the MAGELLAN-class ships do not normally carry civilians and also carry a disproportionate number of officers due to the large number of science officers on such vessels.
