PERSONAL INFORMATION

Background Summary

Vulcan is an unforgiving world, and nowhere is it more harsh than the deep deserts, the most fearsome of which is the Cheleb-Khor. The Oasis of Evekh is one of the very few settlements there, despite modern technology, and here Skarr was born to very traditional parents.

When he was four years old, Skarr got away from his care-giver and wandered alone into the desert. There he was stalked and attacked by a le-matya, a fierce feline predator. He only survived because the search parties found him before the le-matya could finish Skarr off, and managed to drive the predator away. He was wounded by its poisonous claws, however, including a swipe across his face that left a hideous wound. Although such wounds are often fatal, the healers at the Oasis managed to save Skarr’s life, although he was recovering for months afterward. The scar on his face remained, and when he was almost fully recovered, his family brought in a healer who specialized in cosmetic surgery to remove it. Skarr, though he was very young, refused the treatment, telling his mother: “I want to keep it. I earned this scar.” His family reluctantly accepted his wishes, and he proudly wears it to this day, although he has had many offers since to “fix” it.

Skarr started helping his father, a guide and prospector, almost as soon as he could walk, begging to be taken along into the desert until S’awek relented. Soon enough Skarr was going out on his own. He was happy enough in his youth, learning to navigate, hunt, survive and commune with the desert and the mountains. He was considered an outstanding athlete as he was growing up, being bigger and stronger than most Vulcans, and became a recognized expert in the Vulcan martial arts at an early age. Although Vulcan did not have any fighting tournaments (officially), Skarr regularly defeated all challengers and studied with some of the fighting masters.

When he finished secondary school, Skarr convinced his parents that he would rather join the Vulcan Defense Forces and postpone university for a while. For the next couple of years, he helped patrol the planet, while learning military history, tactics, self-defense and weapons, excelling in every category as Skarr discovered that he loved a much more active lifestyle than most Vulcans. It was also during this time when he met his future wife T’Saien, who came from a different desert tribe Skarr visited during his service with the VDF. They married shortly afterwards, running off alone into the desert, remaining there for weeks and evading the search parties sent out to find them. By the time they returned, T’Saien was pregnant and they settled down with his parents at the Oasis of Evekh. Ultimately, though, Vulcan could not contain Skarr’s restless spirit. He craved more adventure than battling wildlife, rescuing civilians and apprehending occasional law-breakers. Instead of applying to the Vulcan Science Academy as his parents desired after his two year enlistment expired, Skarr joined the Romulan exchange program between the VDF and the Romulan military.

For the next four years, Skarr served with the Romulan military contingents attached to their fleets. He was only supposed to be there for two years, but extended it to four after appealing all the way up to the Vulcan High Council, who only reluctantly agreed after much debate. When he finally returned home, Skarr’s debriefing lasted for several months. Details remain classified by the Vulcans, but Skarr maintains he did nothing unethical during his service with the Romulans. He did enjoy working with them, and developed a deep respect for Romulan culture, making many friends in their military and fleet along the way.

He only visited Vulcan a few times during his deployment, and while he was gone, T’saien, his wife, was infected by a dangerous virus called Choriocytosis, which is extremely deadly to Vulcans. Skarr, when he got the news on Romulus, tried to return home but arrived too late. Their son Soval blamed his father for not being there when his mother died, although logically, he could not have saved her. Reportedly, they have been estranged ever since, although Skarr refuses to discuss personal family matters.

Upon the conclusion of his agreed upon service with the Romulans, his parents once again suggested the Vulcan Science Academy, but Skarr had no desire to remain on Vulcan, shunned by his family, his wife’s family, and his son. So he instead applied to Starfleet Academy. With his military background and mediocre academic skills (for a Vulcan), Skarr signed up to become a Marine officer rather than joining Starfleet. The choice shocked his family and the few friends he had remaining on Vulcan, who begged him to reconsider becoming a soldier, but Skarr refused to change his mind.

After graduation, Skarr was sent to Advanced Pilot Flight School, then Marine Advanced Recon Training, during the next year. Now he is ready for his first assignment.

Personality Summary

Skarr is not your typical Vulcan. He is a warrior from a race of pacifists, and rejects many standard Vulcan teachings. He tends to be quite logical, but not all the time. He does not try to suppress his emotions, and sometimes embraces them, so he has been known to smile, laugh and frown, although usually he looks like any other stoic Vulcan. Well, except he’s six-four, heavily muscled, with a crew cut and a prominent red scar on his face.

He first started questioning the value of a purely logical life on Romulus, and went even further down this path while living on Earth. It estranged him from most other Vulcans, only enhanced by his totally atypical decision for his species to become a soldier, so he is in many cases actively avoided and even openly condemned. It does not seem to bother him, though, and since he has chosen a profession very few Vulcans pursue, most of his friends are from other species.

Despite his isolation from fellow Vulcans, he seems content and shows no desire to return to the path of logic as his family and others have urged. He has not gone back to Vulcan since his freshman year at the Academy, and instructors noted that Skarr’s family, including his son, did not attend his graduation ceremony.

Unlike most Vulcans, he is fascinated by other cultures and has a very open mind, even going so far as to prefer other cultures to his own. Like his preference for old earth movies, surfing and cold weather sports, among other things.

Although he is still a brand new commissioned officer, Skarr won compliments from his Marine trainers throughout his training, who commended his leadership skills, tactical planning, and emphasis on preserving the lives of his soldiers. One instructor wrote: “Cadet Skarr is the type of officer who will scout out the enemy, and then lure them into an ambush rather than charging right in as soon as the enemy is spotted. We want brave, enthusiastic leaders, but not stupid ones. Give me a planner over a charger any time.”

Skills Profile

A martial arts devotee from a very early age, Skarr is devoted to training and study. At first, he only learned Vulcan forms of combat, which are mostly defensive. While serving with the Romulans, he learned their variations on the Vulcan styles, although of course they maintained their martial arts were independently developed. They are a good deal more aggressive and potentially lethal than the Vulcan martial arts. When he arrived on Earth, Skarr became fascinated by the wide variety of martial arts that had been developed, and studied several before settling on his two favorites: Jeet Kune Do and Muay Thai, or Thai kickboxing. He is considered an expert in both.

As an athlete from an early age, as well as growing up in a harsh environment, Skarr is devoted to fitness and eating well to “maintain his edge”. He has a very strict diet, which includes loads of carbohydrates and heavy on proteins, including (to the horror of most fellow Vulcans) meat. While on Earth, he started a dedicated weightlifting regimen to increase his strength. By the time he graduated from the Academy, aided by a healthy diet loaded with protein, he had added about thirty pounds of solid muscle onto his previously slim frame. Now his muscular build and broad shoulders are easily apparent at first glance. Vulcans are naturally about three times stronger than humans, but Skarr easily surpasses that.

He is qualified as a Marine sniper with a rifle, an expert with small arms weapons, and was champion overall marksman among the Marines for his last three years at Starfleet Academy, since they did not compete with the Starfleet cadets. Skarr constantly challenges his combat and marksmanship skills on the holodeck.

Skarr is an outstanding pilot, and attended Advanced Flight School for a year after graduating the Starfleet Academy. He loves to fly, especially fast fighters, and is always willing to jump into the pilot’s seat at any given opportunity.

Growing up in the Vulcan desert, Skarr is considered a survival expert in such environments. However, his fascination with winter sports, including cross-country skiing, also means he is adept in surviving in winter climates as well. Frequent primitive hiking and camping trips to other extreme environments like jungles and mountains have given some familiarity with almost any type of outdoor environment.

He loves to surf in the ocean, a sport never even conceived of on Vulcan, but has yet to master it. Skarr is an excellent swimmer, and has some scuba diving experience.

Recent Fitness Reports

2nd Lieutenant Skarr is an outstanding Marine. His Vulcan physique, augmented by his weight training and expertise in kick-boxing, make him a devastating and potentially lethal opponent in hand to hand combat, even when he tries to hold back. His marksmanship skills are superb, and he is a survival skill expert in almost any conceivable terrain. However, his skills go far beyond the physical. Skarr is thoughtful and careful, rather than impulsive, a good planner and tactician, and a leader who is well-liked by his men, though he drives them hard.

I highly recommend him to any future commanding officers. This Vulcan will go far in the Corps.

Current Recreational Interests

He exercises frequently, with a regular schedule of weightlifting and marksmanship. Skarr also practices other skills on the holodeck from his varied interests, anything from kung fu movies brought to life to western gunfights to surfing to skiing and snowboarding and others. He is like a dynamo in motion, and even when standing still, he seems to almost vibrate with repressed energy. At the first chance, he’s off to “loosen up his muscles” somehow.

While serving with the Romulans, Skarr developed a taste for Romulan Ale and a drink called ‘MelShat’, similar to Terran whiskey, but stronger. Somehow, he always seems to have a supply of both. He rarely over-indulges, but is known to be a lot less “stiff” after a few drinks with his fellow Marines. A flask with one or the other beverage is sometimes stashed somewhere on his person, but he never drinks while on duty.

Skarr likes to watch old (and new) martial arts movies from many cultures, but prefers Terran ones. His all time favorite is “Fists of Fury”, and his hero is an old Earth fighter named Bruce Lee. He also likes westerns and enjoys comedies, unlike virtually all other Vulcans.

Skarr has “fast hands”, or as the Marine doctors called it after extensive testing, heightened dexterity. Specifically, superb hand-eye coordination matched with incredible reflexes, placing him “off the charts” as compared to all other marine recruits in terms of his reaction time.

While on Earth, Skarr became fascinated by (among other things) old westerns and especially the gunfights. He enjoys practicing his own quick draw, with archaic weapons on the holodeck and his phaser. With his heightened dexterity, his speed at producing a weapon now is almost blindingly fast.

He likes to perform sleight of hand tricks, and has been known to entertain entire barracks full of Marines with a few simple props, or none at all. It also makes him an accomplished pickpocket, and he is adept at retrieving and planting items from/on subjects without their knowledge.

He knows a lot of card tricks, and is something of a card shark who can easily manipulate most games of chance to heavily tip the odds in his favor. However, he does that more often to prove it can be done and rarely, if ever, actually cheats people. Skarr claims the only times he has done so was to teach certain people who deserved it a lesson.

With the right deck of cards, Skarr can use them as literal weapons, able to throw them with such speed, strength and accuracy that they can slice fruit or actually cut humanoid targets. Almost anything in his hands potentially becomes a weapon, and he once took out an entire squad of Marines just by throwing rocks at them.

Because of his excellent dexterity, Skarr is also a champion darts player. He was Academy darts champion for three years running, one of the very few activities where he did not mind competing with Starfleet personnel.

Having grown up in the desert, Skarr was fascinated by the wide climate varieties on Earth and Romulus. He took up surfing at the Academy and skiing on Romulus, adding snowboarding on Earth.
