  • 13-15: Osaka Prefecture College Preparatory School for Girls
  • 15-18: University of Tokyo, BA Cultural Anthropology/Sociology dual major
  • 18-19: Oxford University, MA Archaeology/History dual major
  • 22-24: Harvard University, Ph.D Archaeology
  • 22-32: Associate Professor, Harvard University
  • 26-27: UCLA, BS Geology/Meterology, dual major
  • 32-34: Earth Defense Academy
  • 35: Department Head School
  • 34: Assigned Assistant Science Officer, USS Endeavor NX-06.
  • 34: Battle of Galorndon Core. With the captain killed in action, the XO incapacitated and the rest of the senior staff dead Lieutenant JG Oda, then the assistant science officer, assumed command of what was left of the Endeavor and continued the fight.

With weapons destroyed, LT Oda retreated to the rear of the formation and attempted to rescue as many survivors from the various ships as possible into the Endeavor’s cargo hold using the transporter device.

Upon taking an addition hit by a Romulan atomic missile, Oda ordered the ship completely dark and set adrift. The ruse worked and Endeavor waited it out, and after the Romulan fleet withdrew Endeavor was able to cram over 700 United Earth fleet survivors into her hold.

  • 38: Battle of Charon. Now a full Lieutenant, Aki was the Chief Science Officer of the USS Athena NX-07. In an attempt to lure the Romulan fleet away from Cheron, Athena traveled to the Aurix system with an “escort” of troop transports. It was a decoy, with the transports filled with pigs instead of humans with small chips implanted to alter their bio-signs to read as human to external scan. Looking like a large invasion force the decoy worked, drawing three of the Romulans’ most advanced warbirds to attack, and attack they did.

The Athena was badly damaged and only survived through blind luck, entering an artificial wormhole caused by imbalanced warp nacelles when trying to escape.

Athena emerged on the other side of the wormhole a battered hulk, with impulse drive and life support completely destroyed, but miraculously with the warp drive intact. If anything, the Athena was in worse shape as it emerged from the wormhole than Endeavor was at Galorndon Core, with barely 12 of her crew of 85 surviving, and not a single one of them uninjured. Again Lieutenant Oda found herself the senior surviving officer who was not unconscious, and so she assumed command of the Athena.

Lt. Oda was unable to get communications or sensors repaired, and so with what was left of their remaining oxygen the battered hulk of the Athena was set adrift with only a pulse distress beacon and the cryogenic stasis tubes feeding off of the essentially unlimited power of the miraculously undamaged warp five engine. was forced to order what was left of the crew into cryogenic stasis. While Athena only carried 20 stasis pods, it was plenty as there were only 12 survivors. She was the last to enter stais and with nothing else consuming any power, the warp drive would, she estimated, have enough fuel to maintain the Athena and it’s surviving crew for 318 years, 6 months, 4 days and eleven hours.

Lieutenant Oda’s injuries were severe, including severe nerve damage to most of her left side, her left knee, crushed by a falling support beam, was shattered, she had a moderate concussion and damage to her left eye. Her left hand was crushed between her knee and the fallen beam and her left shoulder dislocated and collarbone fractured.

  • 38-306: Cryogenic Stasis at planet Kjenta II.

  • 306-310 (38-42): Starfleet Medical. Aki refused amputation and cybernetic replacement of her left leg, hand and eye, and instead underwent multiple extensive surgeries. She had to learn how to walk again and gradually regained strength and fine motor control of her left side, though with significant residual disability.

After six months and most of her surgeries she was able to join the freshman class of Starfleet Academy. While a regular member of the class, she was exempt from all “General Education” classes except for “Federation History”, with the general ed class time used for her many continuing medical appointments and physical therapy.

Promoted to Lieutenant Commander (back dated to 2159)

  • 307-310 (39-42): Starfleet Academy Re-Training, Science Branch
  • 308-310 (40-42): Stanford University, MS Applied Mathamatics
  • 310 (42): Assigned Second Officer / Chief Science Officer USS Destiny
  • 311 (43): Promoted Commander, Assigned First Officer, USS Endeavor
  • 311 (43): Promoted Captain, Assigned Commanding Officer, USS Constellation

B. Background Summary:

CDR Oda Comes from a long and distinguished lineage in Japanese history, with a direct male line all the way back to the great warlord Nobunaga Oda of the 16th century, who himself was a lineal descendant of the famous 12” century female Samurai Tomoe Gozen. In the ASR timeline she is a great-great aunt to Captain Emiko Oda from the Origins timeline.

Aki’s maternal line, while less famous, is one that she perhaps followed more, at least professionally. Scientists and doctors going back to the late 20th century, Aki took after her Korean uncle and went into archaeology and anthropology. Also like her mother and uncle, she was something of a child prodigy, graduating from high school at the age of 15 and continuing on in university and graduate studies at an accelerated pace and with high honors. At the time of the Xindi attack on Earth, Aki had just been offered tenure as a professor at Harvard University, which she turned down to join United Earth Starfleet.

Akiko was very much a person born into the wrong era even in the 22nd century, and as such she is every bit as much of a Samurai as a Starfleet officer. Fortunately, the two ideologies are quite complimentary, with values such as honesty, loyalty and honor transcending time and technology. Akiko is absolutely loyal to the chain of command in both directions and believes in the development of strong leaders at every level.

IV. Skills Profile

As a Starfleet Officer in the generic sense Akiko Oda is in many ways similar to her distant ancestor Nobunaga. She is ambitious, decisive and ruthless when it comes to the execution of her orders or even just doing the “right thing”. She is an extremely skilled tactician and a wise leader who knows how to take advantage of the many and varied skills of her subordinates.

In terms of her skills and qualifications as a scientist, CDR Oda definitely favors the “soft” sciences and has little or no background in astronomy, physics or warp theory. Where she excels is in the planetary sciences, specializing in anthropology and archaeology and with strong formal education backgrounds in geology, meteorology and a diverse knowledge in other planetary sciences such as vulcanology, hydrology and metallurgy obtained from independent study.

Prior to the Xindi incursion in 2153, she was on track for a tenured position in the Archaeology department at Harvard University, where she completed her Ph.D and worked as an associate professor of archaeology and Japanese history.

Akiko is also extremely skilled in many ancient Japanese cultural and martial arts, and is ranked at the prestigious Rokudan (6th rank) in both Ikebana (traditional Japanese flower arrangement), a pursuit she considers more martial than decorative, and Kenjutsu (Japanese swordsmanship), and as Hachidan, or Eight rank, in the Japanese tea ceremony (title of Tea Master). She is a master swordswoman in multiple forms of Kenjutsu and Kendo, and highly adept in both Aikido and Karate. She is also extremely athletic, having been active in intramural gymnastics from age 6, competing from Fram 8 and making the Japanese Olympic team and competing in 2136 and 2140 in gymnastics, earning bronze medals in 2136 for the uneven bars and balance beam, and another bronze for balance beam in 2140.

Today, Akiko clearly shows many signs of the horrific injuries she suffered aboard the USS Athena at the Battle of Charon in 2159. While her uniform and long hair covers all of the scars except for those on her left hand and occasional glimpses of those at the outer edge of her left eye and temple, she can only walk short distances in tremendous pain if she wishes to conceal her limp and will often wear an external brace on her left leg when exercising or participating in away missions. Her left eye is permanently dilated, severely bloodshot and slow to track (lazy eye) and has badly degraded visual acuity and color blindness, though it suffices to add depth perception to her undamaged right eye. Her left hand is shaky, weak and lacks fine motor control unless braced with her right such as when using a two-handed tool or weapon.

V. Recent Fitness Report

CDR Oda suffered extremely severe injuries at the battle of Charon as well as minor complications from the well over two centuries she spent in cryogenic stasis. She was essentially crushed by a collapsing bulkhead that shattered her left foot, knee and thigh as well as her left arm, including the shoulder, elbow and wrist joints and the hand. She also suffered significant internal damage. Recovery was slow, difficult and will never be full. While her life is no longer in danger and her strength has returned to her relatively uninjured right side, her left arm and leg have a vastly reduced range of motion and are slightly weak. She will always walk with an obvious limp and has pain in her reconstructed joints ranging from mild to severe, depending on factors such as weather, activity and overall health.

Through an extremely vigorous daily fitness regimen Aki is able to loosen up sufficiently for most tasks, though extended periods (2 or more hours) of sedentary activity will cause her joints to stiffen. She can barely walk in the morning before her stretches.

Medical Officer’s Final Report:

It is the pain that makes me reluctant to clear CDR Oda for duty, however she has weaned herself from pain killers completely and insists that her sense of duty is stronger than any discomfort she might feel. I have observed her in this state for the past year as she has learned again how to walk, and can only say that her level of willpower and determination leads me to believe that despite her limitations, LCDR Oda belongs on active duty on a front-line starship.

Dr. Harold T. Molina, Starfleet Medical Command

VII. Psychological Profile

CDR Oda’s level of drive borders on the fanatical. She could easily accept a regimen of medications that while disqualifying her for Starship duty, would permit her to live in comfort and remain a productive member of Starfleet in an Earthbound posting.

Despite the obvious pain, CDR Oda is focused on her task and returned physically to the point where she has cleared medical holds, passed the Starfleet physical fitness test and been deemed fit for active duty. I can only add that her willpower and determination should see her through any challenges she may face and that it would be a shame to ground such anexperienced and capable officer as LCDR Oda.

I was also initially concerned about the psychological trauma of time displacement as everyone and everything that CDR Oda ever knew, other than her 11 surviving shipmates from the Athena, are long dead and gone. Still, while difficulties are expected, I’ve seen none. CDR Oda attacked the study of recent history and the scientific and technological advancements of the last two and a half centuries with the same, I can only call fanatical drive that she attacked her physical rehabilitation.

Despite all of her difficulties, it is strange to me that CDR Oda shows none of it save a mild limp. Her demeanor is usually relaxed and she is genuinely pleasant to be around. It is also off-putting how a 44-year-old Starship officer with significant combat experience and what were clearly life-threatening injuries still manages to look more like a teenage schoolgirl of perhaps 15 or 16 years, most notably in her smile.

Doctor Junko Watanabe, Starfleet Medical, Counselor

VIII. Current Recreational Interests

Due to the pain of her injuries, Akiko wakes up two hours early every single day and proceeds with a rigorous exercise regimen that sufficiently limbers her up for the coming day. High barometric pressure causes increased discomfort and usually requires a second exercise session at midday, though such discomfort during the day can be minimized through subtle adjustments of the environmental settings in her quarters the previous night.

In addition to her daily physical fitness regimen, Aki practices regularly with her swordsmanship and usually drinks real green teas, brewed from leaves she obtains from China, Korea and her native Japan and makes using distilled water.

IX. Miscellaneous Information

CDR Oda, despite her relative youth, has the calm demeanor of an elder statesman. She rarely raises her voice, and tends to empower rather than control her subordinates. She hides her pain and disability on first introductions and is able to mask her limp for short periods with high concentration. Her left eye, also damaged, tracks slower than her right and has poor focusing ability.
