Family History:
His father Thol began his career as an apprentice engineer on a Ferenghi freighter. After a few years he rose to the position of chief engineer mainly by stepping on his superiors and getting them fired. Thol knew his position was tenuous, having stepped on a number of people, and soon left. As soon as he left the freighter, his destination was chosen.
Molar 5 was an unaligned world that had recently discovered dilithium deposits. Thol set up a starship maintenance facility on the planet's only space station. Having the lobes for business, Thol got an exclusive contract. Business boomed as freighters came from all over to buy Molar 5's dilithium. On several occasions competitors tried to start up, but every time Thol either bought them out or crushed them.
Thol brought Espice to Molar after he'd been there 5 years. Dal was born 2 years later. Bal followed 3 years after that in 2379. When Bal was 8 Molar was admitted into the Federation.
Bal was working in the maintenance facility almost as soon as he could walk. When he was 15 he realized that he'd spend the rest of his life working for his father unless he put his life on a different path. He decided he wanted to join Starfleet. His father didn't mind his desire to get out an see the galaxy, after all, he had, but tried to convince him to join the Ferenghi merchant fleet.
In the end, he was accepted into SF Academy.
Bal's career began aboard the USS PEARSON and continued aboard the USS YAMATO. Early in his career he met and later married Senior Chief Rebecca vanDelsie. His specialty is propulsion, while her's is weapons. There have been persistent rumors that they have worked for Section 31, but these have never been substantiated.
Recommendations:
"He's a tinkerer and it shows. His grasp of warp physics is adequate. What really sets him apart is his ability to feel how a system is operating. He says he can't explain how, but he knows when something is wrong." -- Lt. Cmdr. Thomas Williams, Engineering Instructor SFA
"Despite living his entire life surrounded by non-Ferenghi, Cadet Bal exhibits many distinctly Ferenghi traits. Chiefly he seems to have the lobes for business." -- Cmdr. Bylan Karel, excerpted from a recent psychological profile
"When someone pulls out a deck of cards, I'd suggest hiding my valuables. I don't think he cheats, at least no one ever caught him, but he wins often." -- Lt. Isaac Stern, former SFA room mate
