B. Background Summary
---------------------
Shara grew up on Andor, but her experiences in childhood were not the average
Andorian experiences. While most Andorians grow up in the underground cities under the
ice of their homeworld, Shara grew up on the coast. Her parents owned and operated a
marine harvesting company. They operated a ship over the ice oceans bringing in fish,
and other edibles from the water to sell to the local clans and nearby villages. At
an early age, Shara became familiar with the day-to-day operations aboard an ocean
going ship.

Her chan father, the owner of the company, wanted to give his daughter
opportunities to develop skills that were useable not only to herself but to her clan
and future bondmates. To that end, he allowed her to work aboard the company ship,
bringing in animals for harvesting, making repairs and emergency decisions, as well
as operating the helm. Shara took to piloting with excitement and enthusiasm. She
enjoyed the piloting of ship and found navigation by both instruments and the stars,
as well as the camaraderie of close work with her shipmates. Since voyages could take
several days to weeks, Shara would spend many nights staring at the stars above the
cold ocean. As she neared her late teens, she asked for her parent’s permission to
attend a flight school. Her parents initially were hesitant for two reasons. The first
was that their eldest daughter had elected to serve aboard a merchant star ship within
the Federation territory. That daughter fell in love with a Starfleet officer and
had run off with him, rather than remain in contact with her homeworld or her family.
The second reason for the hesitation was the fact that Shara was to be married at the
age of twenty and there was the concern Shara would not return to fulfill her obligation.

Shara approached the situation as delicately as she could. She offered a
compromise to her family that would allow her to go to flight school if she returned by
23 years of age to be married. She also pointed out that her increased knowledge in
space flight would be valuable information for her to share with her children.

Her parents agreed to her traveling, and Shara submitted applications to
various flight schools around the Federation. Her school of choice was Paris School
of Flight, which accepted her as a pilot student.

Shara quickly adjusted to the demands of flying small craft, especially civilian
shuttles and survey craft. Unfortunately, on survey mission, Shara’s ship was
struck by a rouge interstellar object. The impact shattered the starboard nacelle
and the pilot fell on the controls in the collision and confusion. The ship was
propelled forward towards Jupiter. Shara quickly took the controls and attempted
to stabilize the orbit. Once she had done so, she pulled the rest of crew from the
disintegrating engineering section, before resuming her seat. As she did so, an
explosion in a bulkhead behind the cockpit shot debris through her chair. The shrapnel,
though small, pierced her in several places along her abdomen. Bleeding profusely,
Shara was unable to continue to correct the damaged ship’s course and passed out
at the controls.

She awoke to a red shirted Starfleet officer leaning over her. She couldn’t understand
all that he was saying, but she could feel him pressing on her abdomen. She
remembers the officer holding up a can of something, then he said, “This is an engineering
sealant, but it will stop the bleeding. Take my hand.” She grabbed hold of his hand
as he applied the sealant. It burned slightly, but she gripped his hand as tightly
as she could. Shara tried to speak but felt so exhausted and weak that she passed out again.

When she awoke the second time, she was in a medical facility. Her midsection was
wrapped in bandages, as well as her right thigh. The doctor explained that she had
injured primarily in her abdomen, and leg. While physical therapy would be required,
the doctor expected her to make a full recovery. However, the injuries had rendered
her infertile.

Shara’s sense of loss was painful and depressing. She felt an intense loss of purpose from
not being able to have children, and her love of flying was almost nonexistent. While the
physical therapy took a short time, Shara’ emotional recovery is still ongoing. Her time in
the medical center prompted a new interest and fascination with medicine and healing.
Determined not to let her life be a waste, she decided not to return to Andor, but became
a premed student on Earth. Her determination bordered on obsession as she studied and worked
her way through school. Once she graduated from the premed program, she applied to Starfleet
Medical, in part due to the officer who saved her, and partially due to the desire to make
a difference.

Shara continues to bring that determination to her job as a medical officer. She is
straight-forward and honest, which can be construed as insubordination at times. Her passion
about her work can lead to overwork, but Shara is determined to discipline herself, through
different martial arts.

Socially, Shara is a little more reluctant to engage people in relationship. While
comfortable in a social setting, Shara has a difficult time opening up about her personal
life. She is willing to share hobbies and interests, especially medicine, but is not as likely
to talk about her family except in a superficial way.

Shara also enjoys nautical history and ships, and will often use sailing analogies for
medical problems.

V. Skills Profile
=================

While being a doctor and a healer by profession, Shara continues her people’s
warrior culture with due diligence in practicing self-defense. She is skilled
with the traditional bladed weapons of Andor, as well as basic hand-to-hand
defensive techniques. Her current martial art of choice is the Earth combat
discipline of karate.

Shara’s antennae provide sensitivity to different environmental conditions,
specifically temperature and electric currents. She often uses this sense in
diagnosing medical conditions or possible mood states based on fluctuations in
body temperature of bioelectric fields.

While not officially trained beyond standard Academy training, Shara has a
working understanding of engines and electronics beyond the basics, specifically
repairs. She is able to improvise with minimal equipment.

VI. Recent Fitness Reports
==========================

Lt. Zi’shara h'Zarath presents in good physical condition, including proper
nutrition, sleep and exercise. Lt. h'Zarath notes that her left leg sometimes
demonstrates some sort of nerve tingling, possibly residual scarring from an
earlier injury. h'Zarath suspects it has to do with her crash several years ago.
However, there does not appear to be any limit to the lieutenant’s physical ability.

Noted physical marks include circular scars on her mid right abdomen, on her
right hip and on her right thigh.

Officer is fit and cleared for duty.

VII. Psychological Profile
==========================

Lt. Zi’shara h'Zarath presents with excellent communication skills. She is
straight forward and honest, both about her strengths and her weaknesses.
Evaluator notes this is common among Andorians. She is a person who admits
to struggling with personal worth due to loss of fertility in a shuttle
accident. While the lieutenant seems to have accepted this part of herself,
or identity among her own people is uncertain in her view. She reports
occasional emotional distress when recalling her last contact with her former
bond mates. H’Zarath became increasingly agitated at recalling the events.

H’Zarath also notes overworking to avoid social situations which at times
make her uncomfortable. While able to engage in meaningful conversation and
make close friends, she reports avoiding other Andorians at times, besides
her immediate family.

Continued counseling is recommended to assist H’Zarath in resolving emotional
struggles. This counseling may continue at the lieutenant’s and her commanding
officer’s discretion, either aboard ship or at a Starbase.

VIII. Current Recreational Interests
====================================

Currently, Shara enjoys studying various martial arts, specifically karate and
some fencing. She also enjoys building model ships as a means of fine tuning her
fine motor skills for surgery, and to explore naval history of various member
planets of the Federation.

Shara also continues medical research and submits for publication to medical
journals as part of her duties.
