Background Summary --------------------- Luken was born in space, and fully expects to die there--but not just yet. The son of a pirate with a fearsome reputation in the bad parts of Orion space, Luken and his twin brother, Lomesh, were raised to take over the family business when the time came for their father to retire (or -be- retired). But all that changed the first time Luken got a close look at a Federation destroyer, the newly-commissioned NELSON-class USS TRAFALGAR . . . Mesmerised, Luken swore that one day he would be at the helm of a ship just like that one--or even bigger. His father agreed to support his son's choice of career, thinking--mistakenly--that Luken would prove a valuable source of insider information from within Starfleet. However, as his studies progressed, Luken found that the Starfleet sense of honour and thirst for exploration were rubbing off on him. His father, increasingly disappointed, eventually stopped calling, and they haven't spoken for some time; his mother does keep in touch, but on the quiet. Neverthless, Luken -is- an Orion, and he values a good time and a quick win as much as any other member of his species. He has learned to rein in his tendencies--at least when on duty--and has seen the rewards: his dream of flying a big, powerful Starfleet vessel is now a reality. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ IV. Medals and Commendations ---------------------------- None at this time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ V. Skills Profile ------------------ Luken is a natural pilot, combining extraordinary reflexes with exceptional spatial awareness. These traits serve him well in hand-to-hand and ranged combat, both with personal and starship weapons. He is also a skilled navigator. Having been aboard starships most of his life, he is intimately familiar with most shipboard systems; he may not be able to fully repair or upgrade them, but he can use them like an expert, and can usually jury-rig a temporary fix that will get damaged systems back into action. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ VI. Recent Fitness Report -------------------------- I'm loath to admit it, but he can fly rings around me, and I've been senior flight instructor here for ten years. Being born in space and raised on an Orion pirate ship--sorry, I mean 'free trader'--clearly helped, but there's also such a thing as natural talent, and this kid has it in spades. -- LCDR Peter Ferris Senior Flight Instructor, Starfleet Academy - - - Luken? The Orion? Yeah, that green-skinned guy. I remember 'im well. He's quick, real quick, and stronger than he looks. Never seemed to pay that much attention during my class, but during full-contact practice nobody could lay a hand on 'im. Real handy with that wicked little curved knife he always seems to carry, too. -- SSGT Mick Dodge Personal Combat Instructor, Starfleet Academy - - - Physically, Orions tend to be a little stronger and tougher than Humans; Cadet Luken fits this broad stereotype. I've never seen such high scores for reflexes, either. Passed for active duty. -- Dr. Avraham ben Ezra Chief Medical Officer, Starfleet Command HQ - - - I have no hesitation in awarding Cadet Luken the highest grade I can give for his performance while aboard the USS TRAFALGAR. Most new graduates can follow orders, but not many can anticipate them; Luken is one of the few. His flying skills saved every life on this ship three times over in our encounter with a Klingon cruiser in the Corrigan Rift. If any of his legendary luck has rubbed off on me, Starfleet Command will post him back to my ship for good. -- CDR Ewan Cole Commanding Officer, USS TRAFALGAR NCC-3140 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ VII. Psychological Profile --------------------------- Cadet Luken is perceptive and resourceful, adapting to new situations with ease. For example, soon after entering his first year at the Academy, he began to grow his hair rather than following the traditional Orion practice of shaving. He explained to me, with what I like to imagine was a twinkle in his eye, that he'd noticed Human girls tended to prefer a man with a fine head of hair! I think it might've been the first time I've blushed during a counselling session for some time. If I were ten years younger . . . -- LT Lita de Marco Counsellor, Starfleet Academy - - - I'd describe him as easy-going, even 'happy-go-lucky'. In fact, that phrase fits the bill in more ways than one! Many of his fellow cadets consider Luken to be abnormally, even supernaturally, lucky; hence the nicknames he's been given, such as 'Lucky Luken' or 'Fluke'. They may have a point: despite having been accused of breaches of Academy rules on three separate occasions, he escaped with nothing more serious than an in- formal reprimand each time. As far as I can tell, each 'lucky escape' was due to nothing more than good fortune--on Luken's part, anyway. His 'unfair lucky streak' has been 'blamed' by jealous peers for his excellent performance in examinations. "The right questions came up" was his explanation, and his instructors indicate that he did work hard. Maybe a case of sour grapes on the part of other cadets? When the cadet cruise assignments were posted, it seemed Luken's luck made another appearance: he ended up on the very starship which had been his inspiration for joining Starfleet in the first place, USS TRAFALGAR. More good luck? Pure chance? In any case, it makes for an interesting chat over coffee in the staff psychologists' lounge! I suppose we'll see if his luck holds when first postings are made public. -- LT Ayline Purcell Staff Psychologist, Starfleet Academy - - - "Apparently, Cadet Luken's excuse for missing his psych evaluation this morning was that he was at the local medical centre doing magic tricks for sick chil- dren. I was somewhat sceptical, so I checked with a friend who works at the med centre, and it turns out the Orion was telling the truth all along. "We've just finished his final appraisal, and it was with mixed feelings that I've signed him off as suitable for service in Starfleet. Prejudice is a power- ful thing, and it seems I'm as guilty of it as the next man: I admit I was looking for a reason to fail him, after my previous experiences with Orions-- that green-skinned b**** took me for everything I had! But it seems I was wrong about Luken. He's a good kid. End recording. "Darlene, delete any previous references in my notes to my suspicions of an advanced case of kleptomania. I guess I was allowing my preconceptions to colour my--dammit, where's my replica of the T'PLANA-HATH?! It was right here on my desk! Current Recreational Interests ------------------------------------- When not socialising, Luken can often be found practising or performing conjuring tricks, illusions and other feats of sleight of hand. He strenuously denies any connection with the poker games, etc. which tend to go on quietly aboard most ships in the fleet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ End BioFile
