The "Cosmos" refers to the Universe, the total of all the mass and energy and the space it occupies, and the mathematical and scientific models of the Universe. The Cosmos is ordered in the following manner:

Universe

Believed to be about 20 billion years old, the Universe encompasses all matter and energy of all forms. See Space Phenomenon: Big Bang for more on the theorized origin of the Universe.

Galaxy

Within the Universe there are billions if not trillions of Galaxies. Galaxies are groups of stars, from anything to a few million stars to billions of stars. See Galaxy Structure for more information.

Star

Within Galaxies are anything from a few million to many billions of stars. Stars are very hot fusion reactors that emit electromagnetic radiation and matter. Star orbit the center of the galaxy they are in. See Star Structure for more information on stars and Star Classes for more information on types of stars.

Planet

Orbiting stars are planets. Planets vary widely in structure, size and composition. See General Information: Planet Structure and Planet Classes for more information.
