Introduction
In ASR, the great majority of the units make use of Marine compliments in their role-play, commanded by the Marine Commanding Officer (MCO). However, these compliments vary in size from ship to ship. This document is designed to standardize the typical compliments found on Star Fleet vessels in ASR.
Unit Sizes
The Star Fleet Marine Corps organizes its units according to the table below. However, the table only covers those typically found on an ASR RP unit. Of course, larger units exist, such as the brigade and the division- but they exist only in terms or background information and passing reference, and are not role-played.
- Fire Team:
- Comprised of 4 soldiers- 1 leader, 1 grenadier, 2 riflemen
- CO= CPL (E-4)
- Squad:
- Comprised of 10 soldiers- 2 fire teams + SGT, CPL
- CO= SGT (E-5)- SSGT (E-6)
- Platoon:
- Comprised of 35 soldiers- 3 squads + command team
- CO= 2LT (O-1)- 1LT (O-2)
- Company:
- Comprised of 160 soldiers- 4 platoons + command team (Can be up to 6 platoons in some cases)
- CO= LTMAJ (O-3)- MAJ (O-4)
- Battalion
- Comprised of 490 soldiers- 3 companies + command team (Can be up to 6 companies in some cases)
- CO= LCOL (O-5)
- Regiment
- Comprised of 1,630 soldiers- 3 battalions + command company
- CO= COL (O-6)
A fire team does not exist as a separate shipboard compliment; it only exists as a subdivision of a squad.
Platoons are often commanded by MSGT (E-8) when not stationed as an independent shipboard compliment.
'Company' is the infantry designation for a unit of this size. An armored unit of similar size is called a 'troop,' and an artillery unit of similar size is called a 'battery.'
'Battalion' is the infantry and artillery designation for a unit of this size. An armored unit of similar size is called a 'squadron.'
The size of a regiment fluctuates, depending on available forces, and needs; any combination of 2 or more battalions is typically considered a regiment.
Deployment Sizes
Though naval shipboard deployments are often fixed in size and strength, part of the hallmark of the Star Fleet Marine Corps is its adaptability and flexibility in its organization as well as in its heart. As such, deployments are often organized into "expeditionary" groupings of various sizes. However, these groupings are beyond the scope of single starship deployment, given their sizes. Such groups would require multiple ships to move- and are thus outside the scope of a typical RP unit in ASR.
Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU)
This is the most common Marine expeditionary group deployment size. An MEU is comprised of a rifle battalion, with a battery of artillery, a platoon of LAVs, an air component, and service support elements. An MEU is usually commanded by a COL (O-6).
In the Star Fleet Marine Corps, there are usually three MEUs assigned to each of Star Fleet's task forces, for purposes of efficiency and redundancy: while one MEU is on deployment, another undergoes training while the third stands down for rest and recreation. Any equipment in need of refitting is done while the MEU stands down.
Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB)
An MEB, instead of being a single rifle battalion, is made up of multiple rifle battalions with similar increases in its artillery and air components, Due to its size (that of a brigade), it is generally commanded by a BRIG (O-7).
MEBs are typically assigned to fleets. Just like the MEUs, they are also assigned in groups of three- one is active, another trains and the third stands down.
Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF)
An MEF is usually made up of an entire division, complete with an artillery regiment, and several tank and LAV battalions. However, its exact make-up, like all of the other expeditionary groups, varies according to necessity. As such, they are usually commanded by a MGEN (O-8) or a LGEN (O-9). These forces also operate in deployments of three, just as the other expeditionary units do.
Starship Marine Detachment Sizes
Below is the chart governing the typical force sizes found on Star Fleet vessels, along with CO grade.
- Frigate (FF)
- Carries no Marines
- Destroyer Escort (DE)
- 1 Squad (10 total)
- Commanded by SGT (E-5) or SSGT (E-6)
- Destroyer (DD)
- 1 Platoon (35 total)
- Commanded by 2LT (O-1) or 1LT (O-2)
- Command Light Cruiser (CLC)
- 1 Company (160 total)
- Commanded by LTMAJ (O-3) or MAJ (O-4)
- Light Cruiser (CL)
- 1 Company (160 total)
- Commanded by LTMAJ (O-3) or MAJ (O-4)
- Heavy Cruiser (CA)
- 1 Company (160 total)
- Commanded by LTMAJ (O-3) or MAJ (O-4)
- 2 Companies (330 total)= maximum deployment (in times of war)
- Command Battle Cruiser (CBC)
- 2 Companies (330 total)
- Commanded by MAJ (O-4)
- 1 Battalion (490 total)= maximum deployment (in times of war)
- Battlecruiser (BC)
- 1 Battalion (490 total)
- Commanded by LCOL (O-5)
- 1 Battalion + 1 Company (650 total)= maximum deployment (in times of war)
- Battleship (BB)
- 1 Battalion (490 total)
- Commanded by LCOL (O-5)
- 2 Battalions (980 total)= maximum deployment (in times of war)
Unless there is a specific reason for the marine detachment to be enlarged or reduced, the ship will not carry the maximum compliment other than during wartime patrols.
Only ships rated CA and above normally have provisions for enlarging marine detachments.
Independent Commands
In ASR, most Marine shipboard compliments operate just as if they were another department or group on board, as far as the chain of command is concerned; in other words, the MCO would report to the ship's XO, and would receive his or her orders from the XO in turn. However, units of battalion size or larger operate with a bit more independence with regards to the chain of command.
Battalion Commands
While the marine commander is accountable to the CO for the discipline of his marines, and to the officer-in-tactical command for their role in the mission, a battalion commander also reports to a regimental commander who is part of the fleet's marine division. This is analogous to the Type Command, and is the entity to which the battalion commander is accountable for training and performance of the marine unit.
Regardless of this added independence, the CO is the officer-in-tactical command on any single-ship deployment; as such, they are responsible to the CO and get their orders from the CO. However, a FMF regimental or division commander is able to move the units at the needs of the corps which could involve movements from one ship to another.
