Midway Colony is an official UFP colony on the edge of Federation space with a strong military tradition. The planet is mineral rich. During the early days of the colony, the planet saw many raids by various groups. The colonists formed a militia to protect themselves. Upon reaching 18 years old, each male must serve for 2 years in the militia. A waver from this duty is given to those that successfully enter Star Fleet. Though Star Fleet takes a more active role in protecting Midway Colony, the militia still survives and is active (much to the annoyance of the Federation Council).
After the death of Dirk's parents, both Star Fleet officers, when Dirk was 7, he went to live with his uncle, a commander in the Midway Militia. Even then, his uncle enforced military style discipline on the young boy, including inspection every morning. Fortunately, his aunt was more gentle, and tried to temper the military upbringing with social skills and encouraged hobbies.
Dirk enjoys marksmanship and weight lifting. He is a junior master (you have to be at least 60 to be a senior master) in Soueitsu, a Midway colony martial art. Though he would never tell his men, he enjoys cooking and baking, two hobbies his aunt shared.
Dirk tends to view life through the military lens. He has a hard time dealing with people who do not act in a situation like he feels they should act, especially serious situations. He can be warm and kind, and even a good sense of humor, when he feels it is appropriate.
Star Fleet is Dirk's career and he does not plan to retire while he still can walk. While ambitious, Dirk does not have the political acumen he feels is required to become part of the “big brass.” He is content with the posting of MCO on a large battleship.
Name: Alberto Ortiz
Rank: Gunnery Sergeant (E-7)
Human, from Monterrey, Mexico, Earth
Physical Traits: 5'6” extremely muscular, with broad shoulders
Age: 52
Recent Career: Platoon Sergeant, USS Furious Platoon Sergeant, USS Valhalla
Alberto is a tough, grizzled man who has seen his fare share of action during his career and knows at least 201 ways to kill a man with his bare hands. He doesn't take any nonsense from anybody. He expects perfection from his men and he expects it now. Those who do not meet his standards will often be assaulted by waves of verbal abuse until the job is done correctly. Conversely, those who do meet his standards, while not getting much verbal praise, will gain his trust and respect and are rewarded accordingly.
He has adopted the father role for Dirk, to whom he speaks plainly with disregard for rank. Dirk has taken this in stride and often seeks Alberto's counsel.
