Playing Notes
=============
I have been accused of 'going native' here in Russia, and though I
think those charges the groundless whining of ignorant Westerners,
their whining did give me opportunity to think about the prototypical
Russian as a character for my writing here.

The prototypical Russian, of course, is a fair-skinned, long-haired
and broad-faced girl named Masha.  But as I cannot write women
convincingly, this character Kazhdenin is an attempt to embody many
of the best attributes of the Russian psyche and is based on a
generalized mix of some of the Russians I know best.

Those attributes include an ability stoically to withstand horrific
circumstances; 'golden hands' -- a talent for making things work; a
respect for iron-fisted authority; true relaxation only in a circle
of very close friends; general pacifism but brutality if provoked; a
healthy relationship with the vodka bottle and a romantic streak that
frequently gets him in trouble.

As the character has developed, it is clear that two other traits
have emerged.  First is his dislike for commerce in general and
"excessive" profit in particular; I rather think he would be
outwardly hostile to any Ferengi he were to meet.  Second would be
his paranoia, by which I mean a tendency to see traps even where
there are none and to fear for the worst even when that is not
necessarily justified.

Kaz - as he is almost universally known - is probably more 'homo
post-sovieticus' than he is purely Russian, but I think the
distinction a difficult one to make at the current moment.  My
challenge is writing him as a married man without boring the
audience more than tolerably.
