B. Background Summary
---------------------

Alexander Fountain was raised in a home firmly committed to the Federation - his father 
serves in the diplomatic corps and his mother works as a civilian at
Starfleet Academy.  While his father was often off-planet, Alex, his twin sister and 
mother remained in San Francisco, so he had only left Earth on a few
occasions prior to joining Starfleet.  Gifted in math and science, Alex has
always excelled at academics generally, though he has never been as socially gifted.
He is not awkward, just shy, and finds himself more comfortable speaking in 
terms of academic parlance than trying to carry on a conversation.

He did exceptionally well at the Academy, where he distinguished himself 
academically but not in terms of leadership.  He was respected by his
classmates for his academic ability and many assume that he will quickly
move from the required line service to some form of research or teaching.

His service as Deputy Chief of Engineering on the science cruiser COPERNICUS
was positive though not exceptional.  His promotion to Chief of Engineering on
the CONSTELLATION and full Lieutenant came as a surprise, but with the fleet
expanding so rapidly and his demonstrated talent as an engineer, Starfleet
command felt that he was a reasonable choice.
