B. Background Summary

John Jefferson Thorpe was born on Stardate 2384.02.14. He is the second son born to Dr. David and Mrs. Lyndsey Thorpe. John was born on Luna, within the city of New Berlin. His father, served as a Starfleet Medical Doctor stationed at Copernicus Medical Center. Hs mother Lyndsey was a music teacher.

From a very young age John was exposed to alien cultures via the patients his father treated. Many of them were Starfleet Officers. His curiosity was piqued one day when he met a Vulcan Starfleet Captain seeking medical attention. This Vulcan told John of tales of the worlds and people he had met and the challenges they presented while receiving treatment from Dr. Thorpe.

His mother was a musician and taught music at the local Neil Armstrong School. John's love of music came from her.

John resolved that day to gear towards a career among the stars. Music, however, would become the one thing that would calm him down through his life.

His most prized possession was a saxophone his mother had given him on his tenth birthday.

With his parents' blessing, John enlisted into Starfleet Academy. He majored in the field of astronavigation, a gifted pilot.

His Academy Career was something of a mixed bag. During his Academy career, John received two disciplinary marks and three commendations. He also earned the nickname of Black Jack due to his desire to take risks which often turned out to succeed.

John's relationship with his siblings, for the most part, are cordial and healthy. His brother David whom everyone calls Junior does disapprove as he is a civilian news reporter. His sister Melissa decided to follow John but centered herself on a career in medicine like their father.

John's first disciplinary mark came in the middle of his sophomore year. John along with Melissa went AWOL to successfully rescue Junior whom had gotten himself in over his head with some members of the Orion Syndicate.

The Second Disciplinary Mark came in the spring of his Sophmore year. The Academy was on lockdown due to an attack upon the grounds by what appeared to be Orion Pirates. John, broke protocol and armed himself after learning his brother falsely implicated him in something he had done against the Syndicate during his investigation.

John gambled and risked general court-martial in order to prevent the Orions from kidnapping their sister based on something Junior had done. When the terrorist attack was over thirteen Orions were dead, seven captured, Melissa wounded but not badly and John himself near death.

He was disciplined for violating lockdown procedure.

His first commendation came during the incident in which his sister was wounded during the attack on the campus. He was told that Starfleet does not want people to blindly follow orders and to use their own judgment in a crisis situation.

David was taken into protective custody until diplomacy prevailed and the Orion government though not officially responsible called off the dogs against David and his siblings. David made a copy of his expose and returned the original as a bargaining chip.

John's second commendation occurred during the fall of his Junior Year. During survival training, John and a group of cadets along with their chaperone Commander Richard Franklin were hiking in a remote area of Arizona when a rockslide occurred. Franklin pushed a cadet out of the way and was injured as a result.

A senior cadet convinced seven cadets to abandon Franklin and seek help. Thorpe along with three other cadets remained behind to care for their fallen instructor. Thorpe took command of the situation and helped care for Franklin as well as protect themselves against the elements and nature until help arrived.

Three Nights and Four Days later rescue arrived. Franklin was airlifted to a nearby hospital but not before commending Thorpe on his resourcefulness and his willingness to gamble on the unknown which earned him the nickname Black Jack.

John graduated tenth in his class. He was subsequently assigned as FCO aboard the Galaxy-Class starship, USS Fafnir NCC-1837. He served two years on board. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade and awarded the Starfleet Medal of Merit for successfully leading the evacuation of the vessel prior to its destruction.

Following this, he was assigned as tactical operations officer aboard the USS Gauss NCC-66003. He remained on board for four years. At the conclusion of his tour on the Gauss. He was promoted and reassigned as Operations Officer/Second Officer aboard USS Tsunami NCC-1281-A. He spent four years aboard until he was reassigned as Second Officer aboard the USS Saratoga NCC-31911.

Following his tenure on Saratoga, he was promoted to Commander and named first officer aboard the USS Pasteur NCC-47911, a Medical Vessel. After five years on the Pasteur, he was reassigned as Commanding Officer, USS LaSalle NCC-23103. He held command of LaSalle until the vessel's decommissioning.
