USS FEYNMAN: Maril Finally Arrives

by Max Felsher 10-1-1996

SD 81001.0240

Ensign Lee is the only one not somewhat apprehensive. After all, the last few times, he had had to climb a mountain on Vulcan, stay close to some Merfolk so he could breathe, and countless other things. He didn't doubt that this simulation was equally unique. He wasn't disappointed....

Holodeck 3

Maril found himself in a strange room with water in the middle. As he surveyed the room, he saw a bust of himself. It looked rather good. Stepping over to it, he noticed a stall, apparently for changing.

He walked into it, finding a piece of clothing. How it was supposed to be worn, however, was a mystery. Then he noticed an image of himself wearing the "toga(?)". After undressing, he tried several ways to put it on, none of which worked. Finally, he got it right, although it still looked very silly.

Maril stepped back out of the stall, but, to his surprise, he found himself in a large circular roofless theater, like those of ancient Rome. In fact, this probably was Roman--the Coliseum if he remembered his Earth history correctly. And this was where gladiatorial combats took place. Gladiatorial combats? Maril swallowed. He hadn't expected to have to fight.

As he shifted back to reality and out of his thoughts, Maril heard a sound--jeers and boos.

"RIDE OR DIE, barbarian!" a familiar voice cried. Since Maril didn't feel like dying, he looked to see what he might ride, but only found a wooden platform with wheels on the sides attached to some horses. He could see some more elaborate devices--they looked like eskolias--at the other end of the track. Perhaps the Romans didn't want another eskolia destroyed. <NRPG:The eskolia is the Tamarian version of the chariot.> The jeers were getting louder.

"Ride, barbarian!" the call came again. So, Maril did the only thing he could do. He stepped onto the piece of wood...

And the horses took off. It was all he could do to hold onto the reins as the horses sped towards the opposite end.

If this had continued the way it was, Maril might have been fine. However, as the horses kept running, the reins in Maril's hands began to tear. Soon they would totally rip apart and Maril would probably lose control and go crashing into the sides of the track(hopefully, the holodeck safeties were online.)

So, Maril did something he had never done before. He gathered all of his strength into one leap from the wood to one of the horses.

However, he found that he had barely caught onto the horse's flanks. Painfully, he pulled himself onto its back, and just lay there for about thirty seconds catching his breath.

Suddenly, the horse stopped and a guard led him into the main structure of the Coliseum.

After a moment or so, Maril reached a large buffet room where one could see the field of combat. Many of the senior officers, also in togas, had already come to the room and were sampling the food or watching the gladiators.

"So, you've arrived, sir," Jerran called out.

"Yes, I have, though I think it was only because of Ilabi's eyesight. Who is yet to come?"

"Let's see: Lieutenant Glin'kharr and Ensign Lee are the only ones left."

"Who was that person who said, 'RIDE OR DIE, barbarian!'? The voice sounded familiar."

"Oh, you don't know," Koreth smiled. "That was the great emperor Bat." A guard outside the room made a meancing gesture towards Koreth. "Excuse me, his High Exaltedness, Emperor Bat the First, Conqueror of the World." The soldier relaxed and Maril smiled. He strode over to see who the next "competitor" would be.

NRPG: You know, I think we actually did once have mission briefings in the Observation Lounge, way back when. You young ones have it too easy. I used to pilot shuttlecrafts 10000 light-years--in blinding plasma storms! And none of these new-fangled D-warp shuttles either! <BG>

> "A dilithium sword." Ensign Lee said. "Thats a very powerful symbol."
>
> "I agree." Koreth replied. "It may not bode well."
>
> "Perhaps, but the fact that they presented it to the Admiral may
>be a good sign. Many races in their infancy often presented weapons to
>other nations as a show of good faith. This may be the equivalent."
>Meleah replied
>
> Koreth didn't seem convinced. From here a lively discussion ensued.

"The presentation of such a weapon indicates that in some way they hold combat or warefare in high regard... such is only learned by dealing with war." Tarrant paused for a moment then continued, "Even if the 'emissary' and the Issahi pose no threat to the Federation, their enemies will."

"From the perspective of the SERAPIS I'd say *someone* sure does." announced Jerran, his voice a little more foreboding than usual.

"Captain, Do we know the location of Mr. Ross? He could fill in some of the blanks."

<Andy - Your answer?>

....... Later: Departmental Report

"My engineering staff is almost back up to full strength... however, I have yet to find a replacement for the beta ACEO. The damage we received in the last mission was quite minimal, and repair crews from Epsilon will be done within the hour."

Zane leaned back in his chair, "Lieutenant, I want to be able to get to the debris site as soon as possible.. less someone should decide to take what doesn't belong to them.... What's our best speed to the location?"

Tarrant did a few quick calculations in his head, "We *should* be able to sustain Warp 9.7 for most of the three days, with a constant watch... but when we start to get close to that debris field we'll have to drop to 9.0 for the Delphi to be effective."

Meleah piped in, "As we approach I suggest an exponential drop in speed as we near the center of the debris."

Tarrant nodded.

<NRPG>

I'll leave some of the debris stuff to others... figured that we needed a reply for all of Andy's hard work <G>

USS FEYNMAN: SB EPSILON

by Jason Bostjancic 10-2-1996

SD: 81002
Scene: SB EPSILON

A lone Lieutenant (jg) carrying an engineering kit and a plasma welder entered transporter room 18c on EPSILON. Hs plain brown hair and dark eyes left nothing to attract attention, nor did the face (which if one actually thought about it, would have found it odd just because of the lack of distinguishing features.)

The transporter chief was bored out of his mind, and only snapped to a shell of attention when the Lieutenant walked in.

"Where to Sir?" His voice couldn't hide the fact that he really didn't care.

"The Feynman, Cargo Bay 1," after a second thought he added, "repairs are taking longer than we thought."

The chief gave a half smile, turned to the computer and began the transport. As the Lieutenant shimmered into the blue screen of nothingness, he noted that the readings didn't report the presence of any of the mechanical devices, plasma torch or engineering kit.

"Hmmf, repairs are needed here too..." said the Chief quite cynicaly to nobody in particular, then returned to his PADD containing the latest 'Women of Risa' mag.

Scene: The 'Lieutenant' beamed aboard and immediately spun arround... The cargo bay was lacking people, just as 'he' had hoped. Reaching into the engineering kit, he pulled out a small titanium colored box and attached it to a belt. A single flash of green light radiated from it, but only for a moment, then the dampening field took effect.

' You've already lost ... Your computer cannot see me... your telepaths cannot read me... now to hide... heh... hide and seek, hide and seek, come on FEYYYN-MANN Hide and seek...'

"I'm afraid not." Zane replied, "Mr. Ross met with the Admiral for a few hours and then got right back on his ship and warped out. Two corvettes provided an escort to the border. They monitored the Issahi ship's direction which is how we know where their home system is. Assuming there was no trickery involved."

"The sea of Ajarno is murky." Maril added.

"At times you can be a master of understatement." Zane replied with a grin.

"Have a seat Lieutenant." Zane offered as the ready-room doors swished closed behind the CSO. The FEYNMAN had left EPSILON hours before and was now hurtling towards the floating debris that was once a proud ship and a fine crew.

Allard gave a polite nod to both the Captain and first officer. "Thank-you sir." he replied with a smile as he sat on the couch next to Commander Maril. 'Lieutenant' certainly sounded alot better than 'Ensign.' Zane took the chair facing the two officers.

"Mr. Allard let me come right to the point. When Commander Maril, Lieutenant Jenn and I were discussing promotions we decided that there were many reasons to promote you and as many reasons not too. I know your performance in this past mission has been discussed in depth with Commander Maril and I see no reason to belabour it. At this point we could either center on the negative or the positive. It was unanimously decided that we look to the positive."

"You have an excellent Academy record, lets face it, you wouldn't be here if you didn't. Hundred's of ensigns graduate from the Academy every year but only a handfull are immediately assigned as a department head. The fact that you were says alot about your abilities and I am inclined to argee with Fleet on this regardless of some of your rash decisions in this past mission. As a result we promoted you, not only in recognition of the work you have done but as an affirmation, if you will, of our faith in you to become an excellent officer and an invaluable asset to the FEYNMAN and to Starfleet."

"But let me be clear on this," Zane leaned forward before continuing, "you screw up again and not only will your head be on the block so might mine. It is entirely my perogative to promote my staff as I see fit. However, if anymore reprimand's appear on your record in the near future Fleet will be all over me as to why I promoted an obvious 'trouble-case.' As I said, there are lots of Ensigns out there all vying for your job. If you can't handle it I am duty-bound to replace you with someone who will and if Fleet feels that I can not adequately handle my own staff it is entirely feasible that the command structure of this vessel may change just as quickly. That is not going to happen. We think you have the makings of an excellent officer Mr. Allard but I will only stick my neck out so far. You have used up your one and only strike. Is that clear?"

<<<NRPG>>>

This in no way signals the end of the meeting but as I mentioned earlier I will be away from Thursday afternoon until Saturday night...please continue with the briefing and your characters take on things.

Max/Mike Dailey: I decided to include this part as I didn't want to leave it hanging any further...please add your character's reactions etc to the conversation.

Looking forward to lots of reading when I get back!

Respectfully,
Andy

J.C. stiffened as best he could, "Orders received and understood, Sirs! Permission to speak freely, Sir." Justin looked to Cdr. Maril, and then right into the center of Zane's eyes.

Zane waited for a moment that seemed to last for eternity. "Granted, Mr. Allard. You're free to speak your mind." Maril opened his mouth to say something, but Zane shook his head to silence him.

"Sirs, I offer no excuses or apologies for my actions. I seen an opportunity and, although not by the book, acted upon it...

"Those actions had good intentions, Lt., but accomplished nothing" Said Maril. "Those Starfleet Officers you saw could very well be connected to the recent loss of three Starships. But you and CPO Tamarov, who acted on your orders, literally going AWOL only got you two both lost and wounded, while leaving the away team shorthanded and without any security personnel." Zane held his hand up, preventing Maril's anger to build any further. Maril acknowledged, sitting down again.

"Sirs, It is VERY clear to me that there are actions an Ensign would do that a LtJg. would NEVER consider. Originally, I had certain misgivings about serving here on the FEYNMAN. I now consider it an honor to serve here, with all of you. While the FEYNMAN is not the ENTERPRISE, I consider us top-rate. That means the security Dept. will be top-rate too....

USS FEYNMAN: Flight Dept Report

by Joseph Baker 10-3-1996

SD: 81004.0053
After the Captain had finished his part of the briefing, the other senior officers began giving their individual department reports. Jerran was called on after Koreth, and so he stood with a PADD in his hand and gave it, self consciously tugging on the back of the toga that seemed a bit drafty in the back.

"All shuttles are accounted for and in top repair, including the Runabout Nogura-II," Jerran said with a slight smile, eliciting some chuckles from the other senior officers at the mention of a ship which had mysteriously been destroyed and managed to turn up again in the shuttlebay after the mission. It had suited Epsilon's quartermaster just fine, just as long as all the shuttles on the FEYNMAN were accounted for.

"LTJG Cartwright has been temporarily assigned to Starbase Epsilon for the rescue mission involving the Husnock ship, leaving ENS Mendorn to replace her as the acting deputy chief flight controller. I am disappointed to say that one of our cadets, Midshipman Sirana, will be leaving us, but am proud to say that it is to attend her graduation ceremony. She has expressed interest in returning to the FEYNMAN as soon as we are back to EPSILON after our next mission.

"Before we reach the salvage site, my crew and I will also be conducting some ballistics tests into the possibility of adding subspace driver coils to the Quickstep maneuvering thruster system, which should give us another 30 percent in maneuverability. The modification has been tested by Starfleet Engineering using shuttlecraft and runabouts with similar success."

"Thank you, Lieutenant," Zane said as the pilot took his seat again. "Next?"

USS FEYNMAN: Security Department Report

by Michael "Mike" Dailey 10-4-1996

SD: 81004.0053
SCENE: Holodeck Briefing

Justin waited patiently for the senior officers to give their reports. He could not help occasionally pawing at the new pip on his collar. J.C. smiled to himself, but it was a habit he would have to halt right away.

After the FCO gave his report, Zane turned to Justin. "How about security, Lt.?". J.C. blushed slightly at the sound of the new rank. It would take a few days or longer to get used to.

"Sirs, both weapons and security at 110% readiness and 100% staffing. I've also had a slight reshuffling of Cadets. Mr. Hensley has left, and I've received the orders for two new Cadets, bringing the total for security to three. Also, I received some mail from a friend and my counterpart on the YORKTOWN. Seems his team has found a way to refine the intercooler stasis chamber of antimatter inside a photon torpedo. This refinement technique increases the 'impact explosion' buy 12 percent. Their CEO has worked with the Weapons Dept. to implement the process, and has forwarded the specs to Starfleet Engineering. Since we're best friends, he's given us a 'sneak preview'. This may prove to be our 'ace in the hole' if needed later in our mission. Lt. Koreth, I would like to cover the changes with you, soon, Sir.

"As for the debris field, if we could augment standard class-2 probes and insert them from four or six different coordinates, we could both minimize the risk of an initial up-close inspection, even with our upgraded sensors, and make it seem like the FEYNMAN is everywhere. Also, if we encode each probe to emit either the FEYNMAN or another starship's transponder code, it will seem like there are MAJOR fleet maneuvers in the area. That is, if anyone is 'watching' from a distance.

USS FEYNMAN: Surprise Guest

by Kristen Gant 10-4-1996

Stardate: 81004.1037
Scene: Holodeck Briefing

Lt. Krysa Jenn had just finished her report when the trumpets sounded and a loud, "Ride or Die!" rang out through the stands. The FEYNMAN officers looked a each other, trying to determine who would be coming . all officers were accounted for.

"Bat?" asked Zane.

Bat shrugged, "Don't look at me, I didn't write the program."

Tarrant looked at the bartender, "No yet somehow you managed to make yourself Emperor."

"Just one of the many tricks I learned over the years, young man."

There was a simultaneous rush to the balcony to see what fun was about to occur now. There were several gasps as they all began to realize that the next contestant was none other than the CINCSILVER himself.

Krysa turned to look at Zane who was looking very pale as he watched the Admiral flip from the back of the chariot. Chuckling she watched the Admiral move with more speed and agility then she would have thought possible, "'Court martial' comes to mind about now."

The FEYNMAN's Captain did not seem to be as amused as Krysa was over the events he watched unfolding. Krysa was sure he was debating stopping the whole program in order to save his job. She put her hand on his arm in comfort, "I'm sure he's not going to be too upset."

There were cheers from the crowd as the Admiral charged at the oncoming tigers, bellowing in defiance. Krysa watched the grizzly scene with some trepidation. It wasn't a pretty picture. But the crowd loved it and the cheers grew louder and louder. When both tigers were no longer moving, the Admiral faced the box where the Senior officers stood. They all quickly hurried back to the conference table and stood by their seats as they waited for the Admiral to join them.

>"Thanks, I needed that." He said to all after waving them to sit down. "Now to business."

Krysa grinned at Zane as he relaxed noticeably.

Regards,
Lt. Krysa Jenn

Tarrant could only watch - frozen - as his holodeck program tried repeatedly to maul the Fleet Admiral. The CEO and his Captain were thinking the same thing... stop the program. But if the Admiral hadn't wanted to 'play' then he could have ended the program. However his thought's quickly changed.

> The wrapping for the package came off and he stood holding a sword
>that caught and refracted the light into a thousand rainbows. With a tiger

The glimmer of the sword was brilliant, and to a swordsman like Tarrant, it completely eliminated any thoughts of ending the program. Even with the apparent lack of skill by it's current wielder, the partial Klingon could tell that the sword was exceptional. The carnage which left Krysa a little aghast only brought into focus the strength of the weapon to Tarrant. It made his titanium-duranium-steel blend Katana he'd gotten a few months ago look like a toy.

Taking a last look at the now wrapped sword, the CEo had to pry his attention back to the Admiral.

Holodeck 3: Roman Senate Chamber

Maril waited for Commander Zane to finish the mission briefing.

As Maril started, he cleared his throat. "The ship itself is ready to head back into space. However, I am worried about the crew. The destruction of three ships in the home fleet does not foster respect for the senior officers. I believe that we need to make sure that orders are understood so that there is no dissent among the crew. The crew is almost up to full complement with just a few officers and crewmen missing."

"Very good," Zane replied. "Next officer?"

MD 1.2000
Ready Room

As the Captain finished his conversation with Lt.(jg) Allard, he added, "Any comments, Commander?"

"No, sir, I have nothing to add."

"Very well. Lieutenant, you are dismissed."

Allard stood up and quickly walked out of the room.

"So, Commander, what are you going to do before turning in?" Zane asked curiously.

"Well, sir, I was going to go over the information on this area of space and review the personnel files."

"Very well. Dismissed."

Maril strode out of the ready room and quickly stepped over to the turbolift. He stopped short and turned to Lt. Jenn, who had the Bridge shift.

"What's our ETA to the debris field?"

"Fifteen hours, twenty-five minutes, sir."

"Thank you, Lieutenant."

Somewhere out in space, near the destruction site of the Serapis

The debris field slowly spread, thinning as it did. With that thinning and spreading, the chances of the Feynman realizing what they were up against decreased dramatically.

But there was someone who was happy about that. It was one entity, but a wholly evil and twisted one. Nothing would stand in its way....

The Serapis hadn't had what it wanted, but maybe this other ship would. If it didn't, well that was their problem.

The entity had learned something, though. Sometimes the direct approach didn't always work. There were many times when a more cunning technique would be more helpful.

Yes, the first officer would be a good target. He would work very well...

MD 1.2030
USS Feynman:First Officer's Office

Maril tapped the PADD, studying the area of the debris field. There was a large K-type star near it, with several planets around it, though none of them were Class M....

Wait a second; why was he doing this? There was no reason to do this.

Then he remembered. It was all because of that Captain. The Captain was ordering him to do these things. If the Captain was removed, Maril would be free, like Arir in the mountains, with no one telling him what to do....

That was right. He had to get rid of him.

Without thinking, Maril set down his PADD. He almost ran out of the room. He had to talk to a few people....

Scene: Holodeck 3 Briefing

Interrupting the department reports, the crowd started cheering, the trumpets blared again, and for yet another time, the battle cry was sounded...

> "RIDE OR DIE!" The throngs cheered, hoping for some blood this time.

Surprised as everyone else was, J.C. moved over to the balcony to behold the CINCSILVER battling the two tigers, and not quite hanging onto the chariot. The Admiral seemed to hurt nothing but his pride, although even that did not show. As he turned to the balcony, everyone scrambled back to their seats at the table.

When Vice Admiral Nicholas reached the top of the stairs, Allard shouted "Attention on Deck!", but it came out a little more squeaky than he would have liked. He stopped, regarded the staff in their native apparel, including Emperor Bat.

> "Thanks, I needed that." He said to all after waving them to sit > down. "Now to business."

Besides, the Serapis was suppost to be quite far out and away from Fed space. The four days minimum seems less if not right. I said 3 at max, and perhaps a slow required for the last to really use the Delphi.

And another opinion . . .

Serapis was on her way out of our normal stomping grounds, problem was, she died in the harness so to speak before she ever got anywhere.

Personal preference . . . Make it a couple of days, it makes you more isolated and prone to having to decide for yourselves rather than just jaunting back for the ole admiral to kiss your boo boos

Speaking of the Az . . . . I will be writing the rest of my side business today. If all and family go well then you may expect the second half today or tomorrow in the very early am (Pacific time)

If Zane learns of your mutinous plans than perhaps you will be meeting with the captn for three days... but in the brig ;)

'Not mutinous' you say..... heh. You get a Bird of Prey for part of one mission, then you want a 3XS-Tarrant- special (the chair!) Talk about ambitious.

Luckily for the Feynman's CEO, his body had already started running on minimal sleep mode before the briefing. His computer was filled to the brim with HUSNOCK data... and now this. He sat back and sipped a bit of his juice. About a dozen PADD's were spread out on the table before him.

The dilithium sword, it was a great wonder and a dangerous possibility. Except for Lt. Meleah, he was probably the best authority on Dilithium crystals on board. Thus, he tried to figure how a ship might be constructed with dilithium.

No matter what, it would have to be alloyed with something else in order to be space worthy. True, dilithium is hard and quite resistant to energy emissions, but *extreme* physical contact with anything else more solid than energy based could cause crystalization fracture. Dilithium has almost no appreciable elastic range to it, thus it wouldn't take much on a stellar scale in order to yield and break... like a brick going at warp2, or a concussion torpedo.

He plugged this information into one of the PADD's. Then added a request to the file for Lt. Meleah to look over the possibilities of what known metals or alloys would best combine with Dilithium crystals to provide a hard, yet space worthy element.

"Computer... Location of Lt. Meleah"

<Lieutenant Meleah is located on the bridge.>

Tarrant gathered up his belongings and headed to the bridge.

MD: 1.1845

As the doors opened, a rather unenthusiastic Lt. Jenn turned in the Captain's chair. She looked as if something of great weight was burdening her.

"Come to relieve me already Lieutenant?" she forced a smile.

"No.. you get to sit in that chair a while longer... I have business with our intrepid Science Officer."

Meleah turned and gave one of those eye-brow raised questioning stares... preprogramed of course. "What can I do for you Lt. Koreth?"

He handed her the PADD, "I have no doubt that you've already started looking into the Dilithium-ship equation."

"It is an interesting problem."

Tarrant nodded, "We'll, I've been going over a few things myself. Could come up with a list of possible alloys which could be used with the dilithium, chemically and physically, in order to make such a vessel space worthy."

"There is no guarantee that such a vessel even exists."

"I know, but that sword we saw makes it all the more possible." A look of being in a dream passed over the partial Klingon... as if imagining what such a ship could do, or what that blade could do.

"I will work on the problem, Lieutenant."

"Thank you."

USS FEYNMAN: Past and Present

by Andrew Catterick 10-6-1996

SD: 81006.1800
MD: 1.1700
Scene: Roman Senate Chambers, Holodeck 3

>Lt. Krysa Jenn had just finished her report when the trumpets sounded and
>a loud, "Ride or Die!" rang out through the stands. The FEYNMAN officers
>looked a each other, trying to determine who would be coming .. all
>officers were accounted for.
>
>"Bat?" asked Zane.
>
>Bat shrugged, "Don't look at me, I didn't write the program."
>
>Tarrant looked at the bartender, "No yet somehow you managed to make
>yourself emperor."
>
>"Just one of the many tricks I learned over the years, young man."
>There was a simultaneous rush to the balcony to see what fun was about to
>occur now. There were several gasps as they all began to realize that the
>next contestant was none other then the CINCSILVER himself.

Zane stared down into the forum in shocked disbelief as he watched the Admiral, dressed in a toga walk out into the sunlight certainly unaware of the tigers that were most probably stalking him. His initial thought was to turn the holodeck program off...instantly.

>Krysa turned to look at Zane who was looking very pale as he watched the
>Admiral flip from the back of the chariot. Chuckling she watched the
>Admiral move with more speed and agility then she would have thought
>possible, "'Court martial' comes to mind about now."
>
>The FEYNMAN's captain did not seem to be as amused as Krysa was over the
>events he watched unfolding. Krysa was sure he was debating stopping the
>whole program in order to save his job. She put her hand on his arm in
>comfort, "I'm sure he's not going to be too upset."

*Not funny at all* Zane thought. *Maybe he won't be 'too' upset but I don't want an Admiral, especially Nicholas, even a little upset.* But still he decided to let the disaster play itself out. He covered his eyes with his hands as he heard the roar of the cats. But just as quickly the hand came back down. He couldn't watch but yet couldn't bring himself to turn away. Instead he looked over at Koreth who was standing on his other side. The CEO seemed to be having a similar reaction as his captain. "You realize the Admiral's going to be pretty annoyed with you?"

"Me?" The CEO replied with feigned innocence. "I was just following orders."

Both men turned to face the coliseum as the crowd's cheers rose to new heights. Zane cringed at what he saw. The Admiral was charging the beasts, sword raced menacingly above his head, letting out a howl that would have made any warrior proud. He struck. Seconds later it was all over. And Zane sighed in grateful relief marveling at the skill and stamina the Admiral had displayed. Perhaps those exaggerated accounts of Nicholas' exploits in EPSILON's 'Wall' weren't all that exaggerated.

>"Thanks, I needed that." He said to all after waving them to sit
>down. "Now to business."

As the FEYNMAN officers moved to take their seats Zane moved towards the admiral. "Welcome to the FEYNMAN sir. Can I get...."

Nicholas continued toward the table and silenced Zane with a dismissive wave.

>He tossed the sword, still covered with the hologram tigers
>blood, on the table before him and pointed to it. "I presume your CO has
>mentioned the gift I received in connection with your mission. A thought
>has occurred to one of my staff that I felt might be relevant to your
>investigation."
>
>The Admiral continued. "We have not been able to get even a sample
>from this blade for analysis. It is almost as though the crystal was
>'grown' in this shape. To remove a piece would cause the destruction of
>the entire blade."
>
>The Admiral spoke on . . . "Computer, comm channel to security."

[Connected.]

Zane raised an eyebrow at his FO. This was getting more mysterious by the second.

> "This is the Admiral, computer will confirm verbal id and coded
>overrides. I want a phaser rifle beamed to this location now. There
>will be a momentary discharge, deactivate the alarms for this location
>for the next three minutes." He turned and focused his gaze on Allard
>who added confirmation. A moment later the rifle appeared next to the
>sword. Wordlessly the Admiral picked up the rifle and openly set it to
>level 7, a setting that could punch through a duranium wall in a single
short burst. He spun it with a practiced move and fired point blank on the
>sword before any could react.

Zane stared, as did they all, at the glow of the beam. Dilithiun wasn't exactly the easiest compound to destroy but a phaser rifle on that setting should have not only sliced through the sword with ease but passed through several decks and whatever they contained. The fact that the sword was obviously absorbing the energy sent a chill up his spine and opened the door to several possible avenues as to why the Issahi would give this as a gift. An example of their power or simple a sword made from a common material to them? Perhaps an expression of how important they held a possible friendship with the Federation. Or a symbol of the consequences if such a relationship was not formed.

>When the eyes adjusted to the light they saw the sword still there,
>now clean, none the worse for the experience. "Theory has it that I
>could hit it with a ships phaser and nothing would happen." He attested.
>"Now if the shape is as big as they make the crystal then all well and
>good, don't shoot their swords. But one tech made the scary
>suggestion . . . what if a ship were shielded with this?"

It would be virtually indestructible. If a starship phaser couldn't scratch this thing and *if* the SERAPIS was destroyed by such a vessel than a lone Starfleet destroyer certainly wasn't going to make much headway.

> He paused to let that sink in. "To boot, we do not know the
>origin of the blade. As a gift, yes. But did they make it or was it a
>battle prize? The SERAPIS might have had even less of a chance than we
>first thought. This translates into a reiteration of what I have already
>told Commander Zane. First sign of trouble you RUN. Failure to do so
>will be a reason to remove the current CO and have someone with common
>sense take over. Am I very clear on this?"

There was no need to answer. The demonstration was clear enough.

>"But then it would not be Commander Zane who would be removed from
>duty." He paused a moment for this to sink in. "Seeing as Commander
>Zane will not be the CO of this vessel."

Zane turned to face the Admiral in surprise. Just what the hell was that supposed to mean? But before he could ask the Admiral continued.

>"Hrrmf, I expect you would like to meet your new CO?"
>
> Silence met the question as eyes turned to Zane who seemed to
>know nothing of this either.

Zane was speechless. Actually he was smart enough not to voice the only thoughts that came to mind. But Admiral or not Zane did not intend to let someone else command *his* ship even temporarily.

> "Fine. Computer, comm channel to Epsilon transporter room 2"

> [Connected]
>
> "Engage" It was not a person that materialized on in the room
>but a small box on the table next to the sword. Admiral Nicholas picked
>it up and opened it. He removed a single solid pip and came 'round the
>table to hand it to Zane. "Commander no longer. As of this date and
>time you are Captain in rank as well as duties, congratulations. As I
>said, Commander Zane will not be the CO, Captain Zane will be.

Zane looked up from the pip he held in his hand, his face a mixture of shock, pride, relief and guilt at having questioned the Admiral's motives. He should had more faith in him, he always took care of his people. "Thank-you sir." Zane replied formally his emotions demanded a more heartfelt reply but his duty and respect for the Admiral reigned him.

>Now I have other duties to attend to so if you will excuse me?"

>As the Vice Admiral turned to leave via the arch, all eyes turned to
>their 'new' CO. Krysa was the first to move from astonishment to action
>as a huge grin spread over her face, as she wrapped her arms around him
>in an exuberant hug. She released him, the grin still on her face, "I
>guess he likes being chased by tigers!"

"It would seem so." Zane replied, still a little shaken, as Krysa pinned the pip on to his collar. Gratefully he accepted the thanks of the assembled officers who seemed less surprised at his promotion than he himself did. But soon the good natured commotion died down and they returned to the business at hand.

>"Has anyone tried to scan this stuff," she asked, touching it lightly. "I
>mean if a ship is shielded with this, can we scan through it."

"I would imagine that EPSILON science has crawled all over this thing." Zane replied. "Of course that doesn't mean there isn't something to be found." He nodded at Koreth and Meleah who both realized they would now be busy for the 3 day journey.

"If there is nothing else?" Zane asked. "Very well then. We launch in one hour. Dismissed."

"Ah Mr. Allard?" Zane said as he rose.

"Yes sir?"

"Would you join Commander Maril and myself in my ready-room at 20:00?"

"Of course sir." Allard replied somewhat deflated. He had expected this.

Zane sat, as he often did, staring at his desk terminal. One would think that by now he would be used to speeding off to mission's with little or no information to go on but he wasn't and he hated it. He had spent the past few hours going over the test that EPSILON science had conducted on the sword. The results had not been very reassuring.

<<Tweedle-beep>>

"Enter." the captain replied to the door signal without looking up from the terminal. The doors swished open and then closed allowing his second officer entry.

>He looked up at her and motioned for her to have seat.
>
>"I'm sorry to bother you, *Captain*," she said with grin.
>
>Zane smiled back, "It's no bother. What can I do for you?"
>
>"Well, if you have a few minutes, I'd like to speak to you about
>something that's been on my mind for a few days now, regarding .. Dee."
>She saw the smile fade from his face and she hurried on, "I know you did
>what you thought you had to, but .. I just have don't like the idea that
>we let her go."

Zane smiled at the diplomatically constructed phrase. "Are you questioning my orders Lieutenant?"

Jenn paused and looked into Zane's eyes trying to judge what he was thinking. She took a leap. "Yes. Although to be more precise, not so much your orders as the reason's for your decision to let Dee go."

"I see. I was wondering if you would get up the nerve to ask, I am not unaware of what you might be feeling about this 'situation', and coming here and questioning my decision can't have been an easy thing to do?"

"No sir it wasn't, however I felt I needed an answer."

*You do* Zane thought. *But I don't know how to tell you.* He deflected the conversation. "Lieutenant as second officer you are part of the command staff. It is your job, as well as Commander Maril's to question me if either of you feel I have taken a course of action that is detrimental to this ship, this crew or Starfleet, in private of course. On the bridge of this ship and in 'public' I am the Captain and not to be questioned. If the crew doesn't believe in me completely then we have a major problem. The same is true for all the senior staff."

"Of course sir. But that doesn't answer my question."

Zane laughed. "No it doesn't. Would you be satisfied if I told you that my decision was based on personal reasons?"

"Satisfied? No. But in this instance I would be willing to accept that." She replied intrigued wondering just what personal reasons Zane could have.

He rose and walked to the replicator. "Computer. Coffee, orange brandy, hot. Krysa?"

"Ahhh...a hot chocolate sounds good." She replied wondering if this meant the conversation would not stop where he had left it.

Zane set the mug down in front of her and settled back into his seat. "To be perfectly honest I don't know where to begin. We both know Dee deserved to be brought up on charges but there wasn't very much evidence to go on and I'm afraid she would have received little more than a slap on the wrist. At the time you were in danger and when she offered to help you I decided that your life was much more important than her getting a slap on the wrist. So I accepted her deal."

"Captain I know you are a man of your word and I realize you made a promise to her but you know empathic abilities or not I'm a trained counselor and I know when something is going on around me especially when I'm somehow involved. You were considerably uncomfortable whenever Dee and I were together, I know you tried to keep us apart and when we docked on EPSILON you couldn't get rid of her fast enough even going so far as giving her departure priority over your normal return-to-base routine's. In all the time I've known you I've never seen you break from a routine. Your a creature of habit."

"What can I say? I had had enough of her and wanted her out of our hair," He rubbed his bald head, "so to speak."

Krysa laughed but she could tell by the Captain's mannerisms that he was still only speaking half truths. And Zane knew she wasn't buying it. "Well Krysa, I'm afraid you have a mystery on your hands. But let me ask you this," He leaned forward with a strange look on his face, "what do you think was going on around you?"

Sorry it took me so long to reply. To skip my trademark freenet whine let me just say that there were alot of posts I wanted to string together but was having too much trouble with it so settled for these three but I do have responses to other items. In order of appearance:

Time problems: Hey at least they happened now and not later....I think we've all agreed as to when we are and when we will be...we'll arrive at SERAPIS' last known location on Day 4 in the afternoon.

Joesph/Mike Dailey: Upgrades sound good. Keep me informed!

Ted: Volunteer Medics sound good...feel free to press gang some volunteers ;)

Mike Dawe: Thanks alot! Very pleasant surprise...and yes you 'got me' ...especially once the Admiral called for transport of the new Captain. Sheesh the crew in revolt and the Admiral playing mind games...what next?

All: Thanks for your congratulatory mail but to be fair I have to say that any recognition I might receive is solely due to all of you...You guys write all the great storylines I'm merely riding on your coattails :)

USS FEYNMAN: Chocolate Chip?

by Jason Bostjancic 10-6-1996

MD: 1.1645
Scene: Deck 8

A brown haired Lt. (jg) in a blue science uniform walked along the corridor. She was small, attractive, and rather unimposing. Her eyes never darted from the PADD she held up as if deep in thought. Although her ears were taking in everything around her.

The PADD held all the information publicly available on the Feynman crew... and some that wasn't so public... like that of the command crew.

Then around the bend came the antithesis of the small lieutenant. Admrl. Nicholas. His imposing nature nearly dwarfed the smaller, in fact he nearly bowled over her.

"Hrmf. Lieutenant, you may wish *next time* to remove yourself from an admiral's path before you get transfered to a work bee cleaning EPSILON."

She lowered her head, but kept the eyes fixed on Nicholas, "Yes sir."

The Admiral resumed his stride. Then from behind he could have swore he heard the words whispered, "Next time you and your ships..." he turned, but saw nothing. The only sound being the ship's hum.

Something didn't sit right about the Lieutenant, so many came through his office that he couldn't be expected to remember everone, but something just wasn't right.

Scene: 10-F
MD: 1.1800

Information is like newly baked cookies on a starship. At first everyone want's some, not necessarily because they're good.. but because they're new. Then you take some to your friend and use the cookies to tease ... but finally you give them one or two. They in turn tell their friends about the great (or horrible) cookies, and 'they' decide whether to get more or forget about it. The older the cookies, the less people who want them.

Thus came the news of the Feynman's mission. Some saw the Admiral... others saw the Captain now as a *Captain*. When the shift change came was when it hit. Still the information was scarce, but the main point was clear. They were going to the SERAPIS.

The knowledge also made it to the ears of the Lt. (jg) in the blue uniform.

'Oh yes... back to the scene of the crime... far from everyone. Heh, how wonderfully perfect.... no help... no ties to home.... just us.'

A grin formed on her face as she listened... and waited.

.................................

MikeD: Just something to take note of. Maybe I'll (you'll) use it later.

The Admiral continued. "We have not been able to get even a sample from this blade for analysis. It is almost as though the crystal was 'grown' in this shape. To rmove a piece would cause the destruction of the entire blade."

At this LT. Meleah looked up with increased interest. The ability to grow dilithium crystals had been theorized for some time but none had yet managed it. This would be a huge incentive to find a source of the blade for starfleet technology, if for no other reason.

The Admiral spoke on . . . "Computer, comm channel to security."

As the Vice Admiral turned to leave via the arch, all eyes turned to their 'new' CO. Krysa was the first to move from astonishment to action as a huge grin spread over her face, as she wrapped her arms around him in an exuberant hug. She released him, the grin still on her face, "I guess he likes being chased by tigers!"

Zane still looked a bit shell shocked as the others began their congratulations as well. Krysa stood back to allow the other in. She was approached by Lt. Allard. With a wry smile he said, "I didn't get a hug with my promotion."

Krysa turned to the brash CSO and returned the smile, "Well Lt., when you attain the rank of Captain, call me, and I'll consider it."

They chuckled as the others began to settle back into their seats. This was after all still a mission briefing. Krysa wondered briefly if perhaps she'd should have dispensed with hugging the Captain, as it probably hadn't appeared to dignified. She hoped she hadn't embarrassed the newly promoted officer. However, her thoughts were soon draw away from that and to the interesting artifact before them.

"Has anyone tried to scan this stuff," she asked, touching it lightly. "I mean if a ship is shielded with this, can we scan through it."

Maril strode out of the ready room and quickly stepped over to the turbolift. He stopped short and turned to Lt. Jenn, who had the Bridge shift. "What's our ETA to the debris field?"

"Two days, eighteen hours, twenty-five minutes, sir." <<I think this makes the time correct :}>>

"Thank you, Lieutenant."

Krysa watched as the XO left the bridge. She kept her eye on the Captain's ready room, for she had some things she wanted to discuss with him, and she wanted to discuss them tonight if possible.

As Krysa's shift drew to a close, the Captain still had not come out of his ready room. This really wasn't unusual. As Zane had no need of sleep, (something she thought he was really missing out on) he was often found spending the night in his ready room.

Krysa was drawn from her thoughts by the turbolift doors swishing open. Lt. Koroth entered the bridge to replace her. She filled him in on the little that had happened, which really wasn't much and made her way toward the ready room. She hit the call button and waited for his response.

She stepped through the door at his 'Enter,' and moved to stand in front of him. He looked up at her and motioned for her to have seat.

"I'm sorry to bother you, *Captain*," she said with grin.

Zane smiled back, "It's no bother. What can I do for you?"

>"What can I say? I had had enough of her and wanted her out of our
>hair," He rubbed his bald head, "so to speak."

Krysa's brow wrinkled, "Well, I know she felt she had something over you. Something that would help her get her way. I had assumed that was because she could help me."

Zane nodded, "I was led to believe that if she didn't help you, your life would be at risk."

"That's what I don't understand. And why I know there's more to it then that." Krysa said frustrated. "She lied. She wasn't the only one that could help. Dr. Glin'kharr would most likely have found the problem at some point, and you wouldn't have needed to accept her help."

"She was in your head, Krysa." Zane said emphatically, "There was no telling what she might have done while we waited for the doctor to try and figure out how she was getting there." He thought for a minute before continuing. "She threatened you .. and me."

Krysa knew that he hadn't wanted to tell her that. "She threatened you? How?" She was really confused now. There was a missing piece here that he wasn't telling her.

"She wanted a safe way away from her enemies. That's all she wanted and she was willing to use whatever means she had at her disposal."

Krysa nodded. "But what could she threaten you with?" She watched the captain's face, but he still wasn't giving anything away. Though there was something in his look .. There was still something he wasn't telling her. She felt his concern and his fear. But she wasn't sure what it was he was afraid of.

"I hope you don't mind me being so blunt about this, but I don't see why you're keeping things from me. I mean, she's gone now, and there's no way for her to get back into my head. She can't hurt me. She can't hurt you. Not anymore. Not after everything else she's done."

"I'd rather not talk about it." he said quietly. Krysa tried to get a better feel for why he refused to talk to her about it, using her empathic skills. She once again cursed the accident which had left her with so little of her natural abilities. What was it he was afraid of? As Zane raised his head and looked directly into Krysa's eyes, her eyes widened.

As their eyes met, his feelings for her could no longer be hidden. She was now able to see why Dee had effected him so much and the power she had held over him. Neither of them able to break the gaze that held them, Krysa was also able to see his anxiety that she'd find out and his equally strong misery that she never would.

"Oh .." Krysa whispered. Her own emotions in turmoil. She'd come to confront him on something she saw as an injustice only to be faced with something she hadn't expected.

"Krysa, I .." he began.

Krysa was finally able to pull her eyes away and she stood quickly, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have pushed. I mean, you had your reasons .. I should have respected that .."

Regards,
Lt. Krysa Jenn

Zane felt like he was floundering as he watched the emotions play across her face. "You did what you thought was right...what *was* right. You thought something was wrong with me and you called me on it. I should have handled it better. I should have..." His voice trailed off as the enormity of the situation hit him. From here on things could never be the same. No matter what happened, what was said, what wasn't, this moment, when he foolishly let his guard down would forever be a turning point between them. But where would it lead?

"No I pushed and it was obvious you didn't want to talk about it and I just kept on going." She looked as confused as Zane felt and he desired nothing more than to reach out to her.

"Please sit down." He said. "I'm sorry. I hadn't meant for it....well now you know why getting rid of Dee was so important." He shrugged in resignation. *Now what do you do?* He thought to himself.

"How long?" She asked.

The Captain leaned back in his chair and thought back. "I don't know exactly...before Kavan came on the scene." As soon as he said it he regretted it. But Kyrsa seemed to let it pass for now as her mind grasped on to another thought. "When they all came aboard!" She exclaimed as her mind raced. "I knew you weren't yourself I even talked to Bat about it and he agreed you seemed a little out of sorts."

Zane nodded. "Up until then I figured any relationship we might have had would develop or wouldn't," He smiled slyly, "I was betting on would. But then suddenly your not only engaged but getting married! I couldn't change how I felt so I decided the only thing I could do was try to forget and move on. I couldn't forget. But at least I knew you were happy."

"Captain I just don't know what to say."

"Its very akward isn't it?"

"Yes!" She replied, glad he had said it first.

"Being my stoic self," he began with a smile, "I was all set to remain silent and I can continue to do so. But we can't ignore the fact that this is now out in the open between us. How we proceed from here," He shrugged, " I don't know. Unfortunately you get most of the shock and what that means is that, for the most part, the ball is now squarely in your court. You know how I feel and I don't expect anything of you save that you do what's best for you. But no matter what happens we both have a duty to this ship and her crew. We're Starfleet officers and can be nothing less no matter what our personal situation. If that ever changes then..."

"...one of us will need a transfer." She finshed for him.

He nodded.

"Well this Starfleet officer better get some sleep or she won't be up to her normal self." She rose and Zane followed suit. "Good night Captain."

"Good night Krysa." Zane watched as the doors closed behind her before he looked up at the ceiling. "Well that was fun."

Lt. Commander Maril's Quarters

Maril was sitting in an armchair in his quarters, seemingly peaceful, but in reality his mind was being used as a great battlefield. Good against evil, his mind against the thing out there.

When the entity had first struck, Maril had not been ready for it and no resistance to the thing's suggestions had been made. But slowly his mind had realized what was happening and was fighting back.

Of course Captain Zane wasn't the probelm. He had saved the crew many times....but no, he was the one which was causing the problems, he was the reason why Maril couldn't command....what was he thinking? he would never revolt against the Captain....but the Captain was stopping him...what was the matter with him? this thing was taking control. If he let it spread, he would be a valuable tool for whatever was out there. He had to stop it....

Sickbay

Maril stepped forward into Sickbay feeling very weak. He was spending all his energy fighting the thing, and he could hardly walk. "Doctor..."

Glin'kharr happened to be coming out of his office at that moment. As he focused on Maril, Maril staggered forward and fell, holding his head. He slowly stopped holding, and his body fell limp.

USS FEYNMAN: To Serve and Protect

by Michael "Mike" Dailey 10-8-1996

SD: 81008
MD: 2.0610
SCENE: Security Office

J.C. leaned back in the chair in front of his desk, loosing the battle to fight against a yawn. Alex, the ACSO, sitting across from J.C., took a sip of his hot chocolate with a a few drops of brandy added for flavor. He had offered one to his CO, but he declined. After the briefing and the post-briefing discussion last night, he had turned in for a few hours sleep. Wanting to get an early start, he had asked Alex to meet him before Alpha started to have their own 'mini-briefing'.

"Everyone in security was going crazy when the Admiral called down requesting the rifle, and safety overrides be turned off. Jonas was on watch at the desk, and called me off-duty to see if I knew what was going on.", said Alex.

"I can imagine. He shocked us when he let go a shot at the sword. Hmm. I wonder if the Admiral still qualifies with his sidearm?", they both laughed at the mental picture of CINCSILVER at target practice. J.C. wheeled his chair back to the desk,

"O.K., down to business. I'm glad you finished the performance reviews for me." Alex handed him two PADDs. "With the briefing, settling in our two new Cadets, and that torpedo modification project, I had my hands full." J.C. picked up the first PADD and scanned the names.

"No problem, Ensign Allard..." Alex had stopped, J.C. tried not to notice, still reading the report. It would take a few weeks for him and the Security team to get used to the new rank. "Sorry, Sir. It slipped."

"Forget it, Alex. When I hear it, I think someone is talking to some other Allard." he rubbed the new pip on his collar, "It will take some time for ME to get used to it, too."

Turning back to the PADD, "Anyway, PO-2 Kori Matsumii, and PO-3 Micah Hicks both up one grade. I agree.", said J.C.

"Jerry Jonas would have made CPO if that, er, incident with Mr. Mason had not happened.", Alex stirred the marshmallows in his chocolate.

"Let's try not to remember that. I'm sure he doesn't want to." J.C. punched up a report on his desk console. "Alex, there seems to be one name missing...". Alex looked puzzled. He had gone over everyone's service records and performance evaluations, and listed the results of the two who were eligible for promotion. He stood up to see the screen, and dropped his mouth open... J.C. copied the file from the console to the PADD.

"There, I've added CPO Tamarov, Alex T. - to Senior Chief Petty Officer to the list. Alex, two direct orders! Close your mouth, and sit back down..." J.C. smiled, and reached across the desk, offering Alex his hand.

"Thank you, SIR! I'm not officially had my time in-grade for another two weeks." Alex had turned bright red, his face flushed.

J.C. signed his name, and hit the send button. The computer would route the report to CDR. Maril and Capt. Zane for final approval. "It's not official yet, of course. Maril and the Captain will probably complete crew evals. while we're enroute, so wait patient for a day or so." J.C. picked up the second pad. After scanning the reports, his smile turned to a frown.

"Both Duffy and McClure on report. Duffy for being late for duty, and McClure for a uniform violation.", J.C. hated this aspect of running a dept. Being recently in a 'hot' spot himself, the CSO had made it clear to all the Security NCO's that nothing short of excellence would be tolerated. J.C. had started the department meeting by saying, 'Our performance WILL be the best. The FEYNMAN may not be the flagship, but we're going to act like it. Excellence will be the standard, and standard will be unacceptable in performance.'

"I wrote Duffy up myself, and T'mec wrote up McClure just last night when he came on duty without his comm badge. Said he had lost it, and didn't have time to get another."

J.C. sighed as he again signed his name, and hit the send box. He gathered the two PADDs and stacked them in the corner of his desk. Duffy and McClure would be at the next Captain's Mast, now presided over buy a full Captain.

Alex spoke up, "Oh I almost forgot, I passed the word around about the Volunteer Medical program Dr. Glin'Khar was offering. Put me, T'Boc, and Jeotcki Reobetorg down. A few others said they might later."

"Good, Glin'kharr should be happy. I was considering it too. After all, we're usually the ones who need medical attention," they both laughed at the 200 year-old joke of high injuries in Security. "I'll let the good Doctor know this morning"

Alex looked at his chrono,"its 0740. I'm going to go relieve T'meq early. Maybe she'll go meditate or something" J.C. rolled his eyes at the Vulcan-slam. They both got up, J.C. added, "remember, as soon as we reach the SERAPIS, all patrol teams are to double up, and I want that permanent team on the bridge 24 hrs, heavily-armed. NO surprises this mission, Alex."

"Right, Lt. Allard." They walked out of the CSO's office. Alex went to the watch officers desk to relieve T'meq, and J.C. headed for the turbo lift. Once on the bridge, he greeted the Duty Officer, and went over to tactical.

"Good morning, Mr. Hicks. You can go early, but check out with the duty officer first."

"Thank you, Sir.", Hicks walked down to the center seat, and asked permission to leave. The D.O. nodded.

*When Lt. Koreth comes on duty, I'll speak to him about the photon torpedo upgrade*, J.C. thought as he punched up Gamma's shift-log from tactical, seeing absolutely nothing of interest. Thinking, he walked down to the chair to speak to the D.O. There was a special 'minor-alteration' J.C. wanted to add to the 'Chair'...

USS FEYNMAN: Making It To Morning

by Kristen Gant 10-8-1996

Stardate: 81008.1224
Scene: Krysa's quarters
MD: 2.0100

Krysa had dressed for bed, but was now sitting on the couch in her living room, unable to sleep. Her thoughts keeping her awake. She had no idea how to handle this new factor which had now been entered into her life. She'd never had a relationship where she hadn't known the rules before entering.

Her relationship with Jack during her academy years had always been for fun and companionship. She'd known then that there was never any hope of commitment there. He's heart was already taken by his career. She'd known that and accepted it. And if it hadn't been for his friendship she wasn't sure she'd have made it through the academy. He'd been a great support.

Of course with Kavan, plans had been made and decided when she was just an infant. As much as she'd fought it, there had never been another choice. Though there were times she wished, for Kavan's sake, she'd refused her fathers wishes. But her father always won out in the end. Unfortunately in this case, it didn't have a happy ending.

Krysa brushed away a tear that slid down her face. She did miss him, despite the guilt she felt over his death. It was the fact that he had been happy with her on the FEYNMAN that gave her any solace at all. She knew that had he lived, they could have been very happy. But the fates had decided otherwise.

She knew that she partly blamed Dee for his death as well, since she'd been instrumental in the circumstances that led to his death. Which was a big part of why she'd been upset that the Captain had let her go so easily. But now .. now it made sense. He'd been protecting her two-fold. Not just from Dee's mind control, but also from her manipulation of his feelings.

She remembered the first time she'd ever spent anytime with him. She'd been an Ensign, fresh out of the academy, excited to be on her first mission. He had been Lt. Commander Zane then, the FO of the FEYNMAN. She'd liked him instantly and they had gotten along well. He'd been the one to give her the Bridge Officers test and thanks to him it had been one of the most enjoyable and exhilarating simulations she'd ever done.

In the time they'd served together she'd come to respect him first as the FO and then as the Captain. She trusted him and they'd become friends. She'd known something was wrong when he'd been there to greet the shuttle's carrying her parents and Kavan's parents, but she'd never bothered to follow up on it.

She even remembered his somber mood at the engagement party. Which of course now made sense. He'd had enough respect for her to not say anything as she made her decision to follow tradition and her fathers wishes.

She knew he tended to be closed mouthed in personal matters and as a counselor she had respected his right to do that. Until tonight. She had pushed too far and gone beyond where any good counselor or friend should ever go. And now everything was different. She had been so caught up in making sure she got her answers ..

She sighed, "Well this is getting you nowhere, Lieutenant," she admonished herself. "Computer, lights off. Play Bach, French Suite No. 1 in D minor." As the music began, she headed into the bedroom and crawled under the covers determined to rest her mind and her body. She could think about things tomorrow.

MD: 2.0700

Krysa awoke, the French Suite No. 1 still playing softly. As she sat up the world still seemed so strange. Everything looked familiar, yet it was all different.

"Computer, stop music."

She got out of bed and ran a steaming hot water shower. While this wouldn't help her solve any great problems emotionally, it would definitely make her feel better physically.

Water so hot it made your pores tingle was definitely one of the most enjoyable ways to relax in Krysa's book. And she felt a desperate need to relax. It was still over two days away until they reached the Serapis debris field. In those two days the crew was in desperate need of something fun. Perhaps a ball game to set minds at ease before they had to deal with the gruesome work of investigating the wreckage. It was definitely something she should mention to the Captain.

She sighed as she realized out easily that had come out. They had come to work together so easily. So why did things seem so different now. Perhaps if she just went on as though she hadn't pried last night she could make things back to the way they were. Even as her training told her this was impossible, she set out to do just that.

As she dressed and brushed her hair she had the computer read off her list of things to do for the day. There really wasn't much to do, as most everything was in place and ready for when the reached the debris field. And that which wasn't yet ready was being worked diligently on by CPO Smith, the Ops department Delphi Operator. The Delphi array was an interesting section of the FEYNMAN. As a detailed sensor, it fell under both Operations and Science departments. Not to mention engineering to keep it fully functional. She had been fortunate enough to place Sarah Smith as Delphi Operator. Sarah seemed to get along with everyone and so far since she'd taken the position there had been no disputes over the array. Before, it had been a virtual hot bed of disagreement between departments.

Checking her appearance one last time in the mirror she ran out of her quarters to make it to the bridge for her shift. She was already running late.

MD: 2.0810

Krysa arrived ten minutes late. The Captain was in his chair when she stepped off the turbolift. He looked at her his expression vaguely blank. Krysa realized he was as unsure as to how to continue as she was. "Sorry I'm late, sir," she said.

"Sleep in, Lieutenant?"

Krysa grinned, hearing the easy tone in his voice. "Actually no, just had a slow morning." She then moved to relieve the Gamma Ops. She breathed deeply, glad that far things seemed fairly normal. Of course she'd not yet truly met his gaze yet. One step at a time ..

Regards,
Lt. Krysa Jenn.

NRPG: So do we wanna do a ball game or something or just head straight on to the wreckage?

USS FEYNMAN: Here and There

by Andrew Catterick 10-10-1996

SD: 81010.1100
MD: 2.0300
Scene: Ready-room

[Sickbay to Zane.]

"Zane here, what can I do for you Doctor?" Zane asked, wondering why Glin'kharr was up so late.

[Commander Maril was presumably on his way to sickbay and collapsed as he arrived.] The doctor replied matter-of-factly. Zane could here a slight twinge of frustration in the wolf's voice.

"I'm on my way."

_______________________________
MD: 2.0305
Scene: Sickbay

"How is he?" Zane asked before the sickbay doors had closed behind him. Glin'kharr looked up from his scanner at the Captain. "It seems to be a case of fatigue."

"Seems to be?" Zane asked.

"Every indication points to it but I would have thought he would have had more stamina."

"Well he's been through alot. The last mission was a grinder and a very emotional strain at that. I know he had friends on all three of the destroyed ships and that the loss has taken its toll. Add to that our immediate launch and all that goes with it and the load seems unmanageable especially for Commander Maril, the XO usually gets the brunt of a launch."

The doctor frowned. "Well you and the Admiral both got my report. I recommended some R&R for this crew before they get caught up in another 'grinder' if they don't they fall apart."

"Agreed. Which is why Ens Lee and our morale officer are planning something for tomorrow."

"Well it better be fun....and relaxing." The doctor demanded.

"Would you expect anything less from Emporer Bat?" He said with a smile. "Well I'll get out of your fur, keep me informed."

_______________________________
MD:2.1200
Scene: Bridge

Zane paced around the bridge for what seemed like the millionth time. He was his usual pre-mission 'antsy' self and was trying extremely hard not to harass the bridge crew. The FEYNMAN was hurtling through space at better than warp 9.45 in a relative straight line and they would be for another 48 hours. The result was there was little for the bridge officers to report on and little for Zane to sink his teeth into. That meant that Zane had little else to do but worry and the last 24 hours had given him plenty of topics to dwell on. He hated to worry.

"Excuse me Captain."

Zane looked away from the viewscreen to MCPO Mike Larocque. "Bit early for signatures isn't it Mike."

"Well I've got a few things I thought you might like to see, sir." He said with a grin as he passed over the PADDs and then watched the Captain's face carefully. He was rewarded soon thereafter.

Zane's eyes almost popped out of his head as he read Bat's invitation to the crew. "I imagine everyone already knows about this?" He asked Larocque, hoping he could delete the dunk tank idea before it got around.

"Uh...I'd say your probably the last one to hear about it sir."

"I see." Zane replied with a defeated tone. "You'll make sure the water is warm."

"Of course sir." Mike said with a smile. "Uh sir, I don't think Bat wanted you to find out about this...if he found out I was the one..."

Zane patted him on the shoulder. "Don't worry your secret's safe with me."

<<<NRPG>>>

Well its Thursday now so lets say we start the festivities on Sat Am...I think we could all use a little mindless distraction before we jump back into the thick of things....so that gives you a day or so to think up fun things to do on the holodeck...a little more character development, recover from evil entities..work in the old throwing arm to try and dunk the person who promotes you etc.

USS FEYNMAN: Fun in the Sun .. or is that Corn?

by Kristen Gant 10-11-1996

Stardate: 81011
Scene: 10-Forward
MD: 2.1700

Krysa headed to 10-Forward as soon as she could after receiving Bat's memo regarding the ball game. Bat was there in his usual spot relaxing as Krysa walked up to him with a broad grin. "Bat, you are a mind reader."

"Nah, I leave that kinda thing to you Betazoid's," he teased.

Had it not been for the events of the pervious night, Krysa might have found Bat's comment amusing. As it was she had to shake off the guilt that flooded through her once again. Bat noticed her unease and questioningly asked, "Something wrong?"

"No," she said quickly, "I just came to offer my services in whatever help you need. As I recall, you never could've gotten through the last one without my help."

"Perhaps." Bat laughed, "You wanna help dunk the Captain?"

Krysa chuckled, "How did you ever get him to agree to that?"

"Easy," he said slyly, "I never asked."

"You are evil," teased Krysa.

"Well, it's not like he can demote me."

MD: 3.1200

Krysa entered the Holodeck, having changed out of her uniform and into a much more comfortable pair of shorts and a T-shirt. She'd learned from the last FEYNMAN Ball game that it was best to be comfortable. She'd also made sure this time to wear special shoes to avoid tripping and spraining her ankle as she had done the last time.

"Well, you look the part," laughed Bat. Krysa turned toward the sound of his voice. She grinned thinking much the same thing about him. He was dressed in a chef's hat and apron standing next to the roaring hot grill.

"No Sloppy Joe's this time?"

"Nope, I've gotta keep changing the menu or it would get boring."

Krysa laughed, "Well I've not doubt, I'll love anything you make!"

Bat chuckled, "Me either!"

Krysa admired Bat's Holodeck set up, as she glanced around. It was different from the last one which had taken place in an 20th century Earth baseball park. This one was in a much less formal setting. The baseball diamond was actually on the edge of a corn field. Her gaze fell on the dunking tank, which was still being set up. "Has the Captain shown up yet?"

"Nope not yet. But he will .. you can bet on it."

It was right about then that Lt. Meleah walked onto the holodeck. Krysa smiled and waved her over. "I'm glad you're here, Meleah." Krysa greeted her when she approached.

"I would not miss the chance to see the Captain get dunked."

Krysa and Bat chuckled, "Well, then you must certainly be the first to dunk him. I'm sure you wouldn't miss."

Meleah simply raised her eyebrows but didn't say anything.

Regards,
Lt. Krysa Jenn

NRPG: Okay well, I got Krysa to the game :} I'm sure she'll hit the dunking booth before the day is over though ..

I didn't write anyone else in cause I wanted to give you all the chance to write yourselves in. BTW, I loved Field of Dreams, so you got a corn field :}

USS FEYNMAN: Batter up, Klingon in the outfield, and dripping Captains

by Michael "Mike" Dailey 10-11-1996

STARDATE: 81011.2230
MD: 3.1205
SCENE: J.C.'s quarters

Opening the closet door, J.C. took the medium-sized black duffle-bag with his name, serial number, and Starfleet insignia, down from the top shelf and set it on the table. Unzipping the main section, he pulled out the items he was after, a black and white ball cap, with the Federation Series logo for 2403, and his soft, oiled imitation-leather glove. That game seemed like decades ago, instead of only the few years it was. All of the finals and semifinals completed, the Series of '03 had come down two the two beat teams in the entire federation; Risa and Terra. Risa had the honor of hosting the Terran team.

J.C. and his older brother Kevin, had begged their father constantly for three months to allow them to go. They would pay for the transport, tickets, meals, and lodging themselves, but that was quite a trip for two teenagers of 15 and 17. In the end, their dad grudgingly gave in. After all, baseball may have been invented on Terra, but Terra had won the F.S. only four time in the past 100 yrs.

It was a jam-packed, nonstop exciting game. Both teams were great, but the Risians proved to be better in the bottom of the 10th. With runners at 1st and 3rd, the final Risan batter literally launched one into orbit, over the stands, bringing himself and the other two in, for a final win of 27 to 24. Afterwards, the boys had enjoyed their night on Risa almost as much as the game...

Snapping back to the present, J.C. zipped up the duffle, put on the hat, and tilted down so it was straight. He headed out of his quarters to pick up Alex Tamarov, his ACSO. Alex had shorts, a T-shirt, and a cap, turned 'backwards'.

SCENE: Holodeck 3.

When the large doors to the Holodeck opened, the two security officers stepped into the deck. J.C. looked slightly surprised. All the fields he had ever seen where in public parks or indoor stadiums, not in cornfields. He looked over to Alex, who sported a grin and looked eager for action.

"What are you smiling for?", asked Justin.

"This reminds me of a field near my grandparents place on Earth in Indiana.", said Alex. "I played quite a few games there".

"I didn't know you grew up on a farm."

"I didn't. Their house just happen to be away from the city. Lots of farms in the area. They had some horses, but that was all. This is really great!", said Alex.

"Yeah, Bat went all out, again" agreed J.C. True, their Recreation Officer [ret.] had designed yet another holo-work of wonder. The temperature was perfect. Not too hot, but he could actually feel the warmth of the Holodeck 'sunlight' on his face. A light breeze blew by every now and then, the last of which caused both Security men to sniff the air. The looked over to a small building where Lieutenants Jenn and Meleah were talking to Bat, who was the Chef extraordinaire at the BBQ grill. The smell, a rich, spicy and slightly sweet aroma , was simply mouthwatering delicious. They walked over to greet the others...

"Lt's., Bat. Good afternoon.", sounded the mutual greetings. Alex sniffed closer to Bat and the grill. As good as it smelled, neither could identify the main course, and the lid to the grill was closed. "So, what's cooking, Bat," asked the Security second in command.

Bat reached up and tilted his Chefs hat slightly, "it's a secret. But you'll love it." Alex frowned.

Kyrsa nudged Bat,"He won't even tell me. I know it's not his famous Sloppy Joes., though."

J.C. looked around, "I can't wait to start. Lets see...", J.C. acted though as in serious thought, turning a sly look to Alex and the others. "I simply HAVE to pitch once against Mr. Maril".

"I, for one, want to see how well our engineer can pitch a baseball," said Lt. Jenn.

"I know," said the ACSO," I'm counting on knocking out of the park anything that Mr. Jerran can pitch." Everyone laughed at the unspoken challenge, even Meleah smiled. J.C. suddenly had an idea, "O.K. everyone, I have 100 credits that says my first three pitches to our CO's new 'think-tank' hit the bullseye...."

"What the hell are you idiots doing out there?" Bat screamed out to Larocque, Fuhrman and Barron who were in enjoying themselves on their own holodeck creation, the sailboat, 'Nautical Disaster'. Almost immediately the boat swung around to the shore.

"What?" Larocque called out.

Bat gestured towards the corn. "Your in charge of the corn! Stop fooling around and get yourselves over there. Now!"

Mike simply waved back but in a few seconds they had pointed the boat in the direction of the small river that went through the corn field.

"Damn fools," Bat began to mutter to himself as he stomped off towards the BBQ pit. "have to do everything myself."

"Why Bat I'd say you've got pre-show jitters." Kyrsa said.

The bartender turned and the look on his face said exactly what he was thinking. But quickly his features softened and he smiled. "Yea I guess so. Its important that everyone has a good time."

"Of course it is." Kyrsa agreed. "And that goes for the host as well."

"Once I get everything running then I can start to relax. Besides," He winked. "all I need is to see one good dunk of my nephew and I'll be happy for the rest of the month."

Kyrsa laughed. "You are positively evil!"

"Me?" He feigned shock. "Its for his own good. We don't want his ego to get any bigger now that he has the extra jewelery. Ahhh there's the victim now. I'd better go and make sure I have a good view. I don't want to miss this."

Zane walked through the parting doors of the holodeck and stopped to take in the view. He wore a grey t-shirt with a small crest on the left breast. The FEYNMAN with its motto inscribed underneath. For shorts he wore is lucky navy blue Academy issue. In his left hand his prized and cherished ball glove which Bat himself had given Zane for his 12th birthday. The holodeck program was certainly going to be fun.

He walked over to the BBQ pit exchanging greetings and waves with the crew. The festivities had only just begun but already most of the FEYNMAN complement had arrived. He spied Chief Larocque's boat out on the small lake and a number of crew and officers were playing some sort of team sport he had never seen before. He watched for awhile, trying to figure out the rules but it was beyond him

"Good afternoon Captain sir." Bat said as he flipped somesort of meat type substance on his grill.

"Bat." Zane replied with a nod as he watched some crewman wheel in the dunk tank. "Looks like they're ready for me." He began to walk over.

Bat just watched in surprise. Zane had not mentioned anything what was he up to.

>All expected their Captain to be 'dunked'. An android shouldn't miss.
>As Meleah started to throw the old-fashioned ball towards the target, an
>officer bumped into her from behind.
>The ball flew through the air.............
>
>WHACK!!!!!!!!!! The ball hit the target but only to the side. Zane
>breathed a sigh of relief but only for a moment because he saw that
>Meleah had immediately found a second ball and had flung it at the

As Zane bobbed up from below the water line he smiled. Revenge would be sweet.

SCENE: Bridge

Maril walked behind Lt.(jg) Allard at the tactical console, making sure that everything was like Ridaka on the island.

Nothing had really happened since he had supposedly walked into Sickbay 33 hours ago, except for a few headaches. He would have to see Dr. Glin'kharr about those. It was strange that he couldn't remember anything after he had met with Captain Zane and before he had woken up the next day. Maril supposed that it was just a one-time occurrence.

Somewhere out in space

Occurrence...yes, it was a strange occurrence. Usually, nothing could resist it. It would have to wait for this ship to come closer, where its power would be greater. Then, it would be able to tear them all apart until it found what it wanted. And even then, it still might continue to attack and wreak revenge upon this creature that had dared to oppose it.

His mind will relax, yes...then, it will strike when the metaphor-being's mind would be least prepared. Nothing would stop it, nothing....

MD 3.1200
Holodeck 3

Maril walked onto the sunlit "baseball(?)" field, preparing for a free throw fly ball, ot was it a double play goal? Maril had only played the game once before, but he had already grasped the essentials. A certain member of the team known as the "pitcher" threw the ball to a member of the opposite team called the "batter". If the batter hit the ball to an area less than 45 degrees to the right or left of forward, it was a "fair ball". If the ball was hit anywhere else, the ball was "unfair" and both the batter and pitcher would be taken to "court"--no, that was basketball. Maril was already getting confused.

Well, at least he knew that the pitcher had to have a strong arm and the batter had to wave a long stick to hit the ball. In fact, Lt. Jerran looked like a good pitcher, having just dunked the Captain with two balls at the same time in a strange contraption called a "dunk tank". Was this also part of baseball? Maril wondered.

Hopefully, Maril would "get the hang of it" as the game progressed. These games always seemed much simpler in real life than they did when you thought about the rules.

Maril, seriously wanting to make Commander, stayed away from the dunk tank until the game began. By the time he realized that Zane didn't have the power to promote him, it was too late.

"Play ball!" someone with a wire mask on his face called. Here was another facet of the game, the "umpire". This was very confusing. Was the umpire a player? For which team?

So, the fun begins. :)

I think we should have the Redshirts(CO, FO, and FCO) against the Yellowshirts(OPS, CSO, and CEO), with the Blueshirts(CSciO, CMO, and CNS) divided between the two.

What do you say, the Yellows get Meleah, but we get Glin'kharr and Lee, since an android can have absolute precision on pitches?

Of course, this means we'll have to add a few junior officers to get 9 against 9 (and, unless there are any objections, the pitcher bats, i.e. no DH). But how hard could that be? <G>

The crew was beginning to assemble at the ball diamond for a bit of base ball while Krysa helped Bat clean up a bit. Not that the food was over by a long shot, but most had eaten their fill for a while. Once the game got going, stomachs would begin growling once again.

Krysa glanced over at the Captain valiantly sitting on the seat in the dunking booth as his crew tried to unseat him. Zane yelled out challenges and threats as his officers laughed, took aim, and promptly hit the target. She'd even taken her own shot which while no where near as spectacular as either Terri's or Meleah's did the trick. Course she'd had to go through three balls to get it right.

The crowd at the dunking booth dwindled as they migrated over toward the baseball diamond. Krysa turned to Bat. "Don't you think we should let him down now."

Bat's eyes twinkled, "Sure why not." He laughed, "A towel might not be a bad idea either. He deserves it for the way he's taken it today." Krysa could feel the man's pride in the FEYNMAN's CO, despite his teasing.

Krysa smiled and nodded, "I'll get one." She headed to the arch and ordered up a soft bath towel. Taking up the towel which materialized she headed toward the dunking booth.

When everyone had had their fill of dunking the Captain, and the ball game had begun, a drenched Captain climbed warily out of the booth, afraid that another crewmember would show up for one more shot at the CO. As he stepped onto the grass he turned, only to find himself facing a smiling Krysa.

"Oh no," he sighed, his eyes pleading, "Please tell me you ~don't~ want another shot."

She chuckled, "No." She help up the large towel to him, "Thought you might need this."

He grinned in relief, "Yes, thank you." He took the towel and began to dry off with it. "Better not let Bat see you giving me a hand. You might be next up there."

Krysa shook her head. "Not to worry, Bat's actually the one who asked me to bring you a towel. He's very proud of you for 'taking it like a man'."

"He didn't give me much choice."

Krysa laughed, "No, I suppose not."

He looked at her slyly, "I noticed that even you took your turn."

"Of course," she teased with a grin, "How often will I get a chance like that,"

"Never again, if I have anything to say about it!" Zane said adamantly.

"Are you going to stand over there dripping all day, or are you going to come play," they heard Jerran call, then hurriedly, he added, "Sir."

Zane frowned at the Lt., then turning to wink at Krysa he called, "We'll be right there, *Mr.* Jerran."

Krysa suppressed the giggle which bubbled up inside her, and the two headed to the ball diamond to join the rest.

USS FEYNMAN: Take Me Out to the Ball Game!

by Michael "Mike" Dailey 10-15-1996

SD: 81015.2200
MD: 3.1230
SCENE: Holodeck ballgame

> Ignoring the sudden hoots and calls from the crowd, Glin'kharr strode
> forward. He only glimpsed at Zane as the Captain began yelling at him.
> "Doctor, what are you doing? You're supposed to... Lieutenant, CEASE AND
> DESI..."
>
> Glin'kharr punched the target _hard_, contacting the plank with nothing
> more than the ball. The Captain's words ended in a splash, and
> Glin'kharr ducked as water sprayed around him. Amidst the cheers of the
> crowd, Glin'kharr casually tossed the last ball into the air, and headed
> back towards the barbecue...

J.C. and Alex cheered the Doctor on as he walked by them enroute to get a few more tasty ribs, "Way to go, Sir" said CPO Tamarov. J.C. turned and held his arm up high to give the Doctor a 'high-five'. "Good shot, Doctor!". Glin'kharr stopped, looked at the CSO, and raised the opposite paw in the same manner, unfamiliar with the strange type of salute.

"No, like this Sir," J.C. lightly 'high-fived' his hand into the Doctors large paw, overlooking Alex snickering slightly. The others giggled.

"This is all in fun, gentlemen." said the Doctor. "Relaxation can be the best medicine at times." He pushed the glasses back into place, and went after more ribs. By now Captain Zane had regained his 'seat' in the reset tank, mumbling something about a dog pound. J.C. bent down to scoop up three balls. Turning to Alex with a sinister grin, "well, Mr. Tamarov. Who is going to represent Security in this little exercise," asked the CSO. He threw a ball up slightly and caught it. "You or me?"

Alex took a few cautious steps backwards, "After you, Sir. My evaluation is still in the works, I wouldn't want it to get, er, all wet."

"O.K., I'll go for it.", said J.C. He walked to the line facing the tank. The officers and crew shouted cheers, more from the junior officers than the seasoned people. He noticed Mr. Maril shaking his head, and Bat shouting very loudly, "Go get one for Security, Justin.", Chef Bat winked at the CSO. He set down two of the tree balls, and then caught Zane's eyes looking at him.

"So, _Lieutenant JUNIOR GRADE_, how is the armory inventory coming along...", the crowd booed, but stopped quickly. J.C. winced for a second, then eyed the center of the target. He stared a hole into the bullseye for about five seconds, blocking out the noise of the crown, focusing on the target. Take a deep breath, again, the wind up, and pitched the ball as hard as he could... but the shot bounced off the top the tank, missing the target by just inches...

Zane taunted the CSO, "Mr. Allard, you're a Starfleet Officer. You should throw better than a Cadet." Apparently numb to the effects of the tank by now, the Captain was starting to enjoy himself, perhaps too much. The crowd laughed in fun at the remark. Picking up another ball, J.C. was even more determined. His shoulder was a bit sore, that last pitch was harder that he thought. He heard Kyrsa shout, "Come on Allard, sink him." Maril looked up at some unknown spot in the sky, and Zane stared daggers the OPS officer.

J.C. nodded to the crowd, and bent down to get the third ball. With both in hand, he quickly took aim for the target, lined it up, wound up and ...

"Lieutenant! What are...." wham! wham! Both balls hit the mark milliseconds apart, with the delightful splash as their Commander took yet another swim. J.C. jumped up, yelling an excited "All RIGHT!". Alex patted him on the back, as the others cheered. They headed for some of Bats' gourmet ribs.

_______________________________

Game:

> "I thought that's what the pitcher was supposed to do, sir. Throw the
> ball so the batter can hit it."
>
> Maril chuckled and said, "Kitano at Milagra, LT. You're supposed to throw
> it so they don't hit it."
>
> "Oh, that makes sense now, sir. I will endeavor to make sure that no one
> hits the ball again," Jerran said. He then smiled to Krysa as she
> crossed home plate again and said, "Consider that giving you a head start."

J.C. took the wooden bat, hit the bottom of his sneaker to knock some invisible dust off, and stepped up to the plate where Bat the umpire and Mr. Maril the catcher were standing. He took his stance, and made a few practice swings. It had been quite a few years. He looked into the FCO's eyes for some hint of what to expect, but found none in the Vulcan-Bajorans poker-face.

The first pitch came in, looked good, and he swung. "Strike!" Bat screamed, right behind J.C. He jumped. "Spirits, Bat! Don't do that!"

"Sorry, Justin. I love this," said Bat. Maril muttered some Tamarian proverb that undoubtedly applied to them. The next one J.C. let come in, and rewarded with Bats cry of, "Ball. Good choice, Justin." He looked out onto the mound at Lt. Jerran. He caught the ball from Bat, rubbed his hands on his shirt. And looked straight at J.C. The next one came in fast, and J.C. bat cracked it off to the side behind the foul line. Bat immediately barked, "Foul. Come on, Justin that's one and two. You have to hit the next one."

"I got it," said J.C. Swinging fiercely in practice, J.C. took stance. This one from Jerran came in a little high, but when the bat cracked it, it went rolling, a grounder. J.C. tossed the bat, and bolted for 1st. The grounder rolled to the right of Jerran, who in a blur seemed to turn, dive for the rolling ball, scoop it up, turn again, and throw it to the crewman covering first, all in one motion. The crewman caught it as J.C. dove for the base. Everyone grew quiet, and turned to Bat. He stood, shook his head, "Out!". J.C. got up, brushed himself off. He walked back to Bat, and stopped. Almost nose to nose, J.C. stared at Bat, and smiled a boyish grin, "Good call, umpire", and kicked some dirt onto the umpire, then ran for the bench and replicator for a drink. "Hey, is that legal?", grinned the Ump. Reaching their 'teams' bench, the CEO, Lt. Koreth eyed J.C. as he sat down beside him. "Honorable attempt, Mr. Allard."

"Uh, thank you, Sir." J.C. took off his cap...

... CPO Tamarov wiped his forehead. The first ball he had swung at and missed. He let the next three go by, luckily getting three balls from Jerran. One more and the FCO would walk him. Lt. Jenn had hit the home run, and Mr. Allard had almost gotten on base, but got out. The next one came almost outside to the right, but the end of the bat connected, sending the ball up high to left field. Alex tore off for 1st, almost forgetting to drop the bat behind him. The red shirt crewman in left field ran to get the ball, but not fast enough, as in bounced mere feet from him. He scooped it up, and tossed it to the Shortstop-Doctor. Alex made it to first, but eyeing the approaching wolf with ball-in-glove, banished any thoughts Alex had at all of reaching second....

USS FEYNMAN: Small Talk

Scene: Lakeside Park, Holodeck 3

Zane had opted to play left field and now three innings into the game he was regretting the choice. After the intial flurry of activity that had stated it off it had settled, like most baseball games eventually do, into a rather slow pace. The fact that no one had hit anything out to left field didn't help. Fortunately he had a good view of the adjacent field where a large group were playing what someone had told him was frisbee football. This seemed much more interesting and definetly more exciting. At least there was running involved. With a grunt he flung his head down towards the ground.

"Do I even want to know?" Bat asked as walked up from the edge of the field to find Zane bent over, his left cheek parallel with the grass.

"No." The Captain replied firmly. "What are you doing on the field? We are in the middle of a game."

The bartender snorted. "Yeah I've been watching, just been chaos out here for you. I noticed that you didn't get a chance to eat so I brought you this." He held up a very large sausage smothered in a number of toppings, some of which Zane didn't recognize. A few more light taps to the right side of his head and then he stood accepting the food. "Thanks. Nothing worse then getting water stuck in your ears."

"A popcorn kernal at the back of your throat?" Bat offered before grimacing as he watched Chief Larocque jump up to catch a high frisbee and then come crashing down on his back. "Or that." He added. Zane nodded.

"The dunk tank was a good idea. Loosened everyone up." He took a big bite of the sausage. "Next time ask me first."

"Now we both know you would have agreed to it so why waste the time." Bat said with a grin. "Uh your up."

"What?" Zane asked before following Bat's pointed finger to the high fly ball heading his way. "Here!" He said as he handed Bat the half eaten sausage and jogged off to get underneath the ball. It was a high one with not a lot of speed to it so, exhausted, it sank like a rock and was easily caught. A quick throw to second and Zane returned to Bat.

"I was just talking with Ensign Lee. She seems to be a good kid, still a little nervous though." Bat continued as he handed back the sausage.

"Well its her first cruise, that's to be expected. She seem satisfied with today's results?"

"So far. She got all clinical on me but the gist of it was everyone is relaxing and having fun. Its also helping the new crew intergrate in with the old." The old bartender waved over towards the lively game of frisbee football.

Zane laughed. "You never were the clincal type."

"Why waste your time with 15 letter words. Say what you mean and get on with it...." His voice trailed off as he watched the action on the infield. "Well thats it."

Zane gestured towards the bench. "Shall we?"

As the two men walked towards Zane's team's bench the conversation turned towards the upcoming mission. "Any thoughts on what your going to find out there?" Bat asked.

"A lot of very small debris if what the survivors told Fleet are accurate. I'm actually surprised any of the escape pods made it past the ships explosion. Must've been a rocky ride."

"Ever been through pod ejection?" Bat asked.

"Only on the holodeck."

"It ain't alot of fun." Bat unconsciously rubbed a shoulder that had popped last time he had ejected. "I can't see there being much information left to find. Surely the two rescue ships did a thorough search." The retired Starfleet officer prodded for information. He understood he was no longer 'in the loop' anymore and he hated it.

"Well they did but it was the GHENT and the WESTPHALIA that repsonded." Zane replied in answer.

"They're both diplomatic ships." Bat said with a nod. "Not much in the way of scientific equipment or personnel."

"No. But the FEYNMAN on the other hand...." He shrugged. "Still I don't expect to find a 'smoking gun' but some info on the weapon type used, something about their drive system, maybe even a trail to follow. I'm sure we'll find something."

"Well are you two still friends?" A new voice entered the picture.

Bat chuckled. "I guess. Just don't tell anyone, I've got my reputation to consider."

Krysa grinned. "Nice catch."

Zane returned the smile and held her glance. "Nice hit."

Bat raised an eyebrow.

Zane turned to face his gathering team as Krysa jogged off to her position. "Ok who's up?"

"The Terrifying Tamarian!" Jerran shouted out before making a show of handing the FO his bat. "Your weapon sire."

USS FEYNMAN: Who Won?

by Kristen Gant 10-17-1996

Stardate: 81017.1912
Scene: Holodeck

Krysa took her spot on the field as Commander Maril stepped up to bat. Lt. Meleah took her position at the pitchers mound throwing the ball up in down in her right had as she eyed the FO.

She threw her first pitch, which whizzed by the Tamarian hitting Lt. Koreth in his catchers padding, and knocking the breath out of him. "Are you alright, Lt.?" Meleah called.

Koreth, who was immediately shooing away those that reached to help him up, sputtered out, "I'm fine!"

"Perhaps I should slow the next one down a bit," called the android.

Koreth growled and said, "That will not be necessary." He quickly moved to his catchers position.

Maril muttered back at the engineer, "Speak for yourself," as he prepared to attempt to hit the Science Officer's next pitch.

Despite Koreth's statement that slowing down the ball would not be necessary, Meleah apparently decided it would be best, as her next pitch did not whizz by quite so quickly, and Koreth was easily able to catch it as Maril swung the bat connecting with nothing but air.

Maril, prepared the next time for Meleah's change in tactic, made a beautiful hit in Krysa's general direction. In an instant Krysa charged for the ball and was very close to making a perfect catch were it not for a small imperfection in the field where she ran. She tripped, falling gracefully, but missing the ball. She jumped up and gave chase, quickly recapturing the ball and throwing it to second base where Maril was closing in.

Unfortunately for Krysa's team, she was not fast enough and Maril made it to the base safe. As Krysa moved back to her spot, brushing the dirt off, she noticed Bat smiling at her. She waved at him and he grinned, waving back. There was something in his eye, that made her take a second look. But he'd already turned and headed back to his grill where several of the crew were standing demanding more of his tantalizing specialties.

She turned her attention back to the game, chalking the odd look up to her imagination and soon forgetting all about it, as Terri stepped up to the plate. "If Krysa can do this .. so can I," he called cheerfully out to where the Ops officer stood.

Krysa grinned, "Go ahead and try, fly-boy."

"Just don't trip this time," he grinned, and Krysa chuckled. It felt good to be able to laugh and joke with her friends. After the drastic changes that had gone on in her life over the past several months, it felt really good to simply relax. As she pondered this, her gaze fell on the Captain waiting on the bench for his turn at bat, chatting amiably with his teammates.

Her attention was drawn back to the game at hand as she heard the ball crack against Jerran's bat. She looked quickly and was thankful it was headed to the other side of the field, as she was in no position to run for it.

Krysa sat at one of the table with a glass of lemonade as Lt. Allard walked by, "Good game, Lt.," he said gallantly.

"Yes, it was," she grinned, slapping his out stretched hand.

She heard the voice behind her. "Aren't you eating, Krysa?" asked Bat taking a seat next to her.

"I've already eaten, Bat. Do you want me to get as big as a house?" she laughed.

"You haven't eaten very much, young lady. It's not like you," he said with a smirk, "One might think you had other things on your mind."

She eyed him, "No, not really. What do you have on your mind?"

"Me? Nothing. Just making sure my customers are happy," he said, spying the Captain, he called, "Hey Zee, come on over here and tell your second officer that I always make sure my customers are happy."

Zane threw the Officer-turned-Barkeep an odd look but stepped up to the table where the two sat, "Happy customers, Bat? You?" he chuckled.

"Sit down, boy, don't make me look up at you. Strains my neck muscles ."

Zane looked at Krysa who shrugged. Pulling out a chair he sat down, keeping an eye on Bat.

"I was just telling Krysa that .. Hey," he called toward the grill where Lt. Koroth and Lt. Meleah were standing. The Klingon and the android turned to look at Bat, not any less confused then the couple sitting at the table with him, "Excuse me," he said to Krysa and Zane, "I've gotta keep my grill out of the hands of those officers of yours." He was off in a flash, leaving the two staring after him.

"What's with him?" Zane asked.

"Beats me," answered Krysa.

USS FEYNMAN: Vengence On Her Mind

by Kristen Gant 10-18-1996

Stardate: 81018.0221
Shuttle Port on Cait

"Ma'am, the shuttle will be leaving for Dexertos III in 10 minutes," said the young man.

The green-skinned woman stood gracefully, turning to face him. "Thank you, sir." He accent was thick and, and her voice deep, "My family will be most appreciative that you were able to get this shuttle for me on such short notice."

"Of course, Lady Elise. I'm only sorry that we did not know earlier that you were coming so that we could have had less confusion for you." The man was bending over backwards to impress the woman, "I wish I had a more comfortable shuttle for you. But it would be quite a wait .."

"That's quite alright," she said quickly, smiling kindly at him, "It's my fault. Please do not blame yourselves."

"You are too kind. Please do tell your father that we will be more then willing to shuttle you around anytime you need."

"I will." She stood and headed toward the shuttle. The man grabbed her bags and followed her quickly. The woman maintained her calm exterior but inside she was bubbling with laughter. Things were going much better then expected despite the FEYNMAN Captain's attempt to thwart her at every turn. First being escorted off the starship and then immediately off the base! She had been infuriated and it had almost ruined everything. Luckily she was able to get the shuttle to take her to Cait where she quickly found what she needed to finish her ensemble and her disguise, which included a slight facial prosthesis and skin dyeing.

She'd also been able to get in touch with her contact on EPSILON, who told her things were all ready for her to head to Dexertos III. The Dexertosian Premiere's only daughter was on a holiday, and had become a prime target for her associates. There would be no foul ups this time. There was no way they would find out she wasn't whom she appeared to be. This time the original had been eliminated. Not to mention, this time she was not working with an unstable man with a vendetta against Starfleet. If she played her cards right, Starfleet wouldn't be anywhere near this time.

She took her seat on the commercial shuttle headed toward her next job on Dexertos III. The Dexertosians had only been admitted to the Federation for a little less then a year. The green-skinned humanoids were known for their pleasant and friendly nature, as well as for their planet's rich deposits of several very useful minerals. Her associates were very interested in getting an inside seat to the planetary government.

As the shuttle approached the planet, the woman was distracted by the sight of a Starfleet Vessel docked at the small starbase orbiting Dexertos III. "What's a Starfleet Vessel doing here?"

The pilot smiled at her, "It's because of you ma'am. Seems your father became concerned by you absence and sent your picture to Starfleet to find you. You showed up on Cait just in time. I do believe your father was .."

She interrupted him, "He sent my picture to Starfleet?"

"Yes, just in case the worst .." the man continued to drone on but the woman's mind was whirling. There was no way .. She would just have to play it cool and hope things were well in hand. She wasn't willing to accept that fact that she had two failed jobs in a row!

"Could you contact my father. I would like to speak to him."

"Of course, Lady Elise." The pilot said quickly. "Shuttle Holiday to Dexertos III. Lady Elise would like to speak to the Premiere."

<Hold please, Shuttle Holiday.>

Soon a the Planetary logo on the screen was replaced by and white-haired, green-skinned man. <Elise, Elise are you there?>

"I'm here, Father." she said.

<Oh my girl, I've been so worried. You did not check in when you reached Thrantid as you were supposed to.>

"I know, and I apologize. I was so caught up in the spectacular sights. And it had been a long trip."

<Darling, there are Starfleet security here who must check you out.> the man said frowning slightly.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

<It seems there may be a problem with someone trying to impersonate you.>

"Me?" she asked innocently, but already her mind was whirling about how she was going to get out of this mess. The only way they could know was if someone on the FEYNMAN sent her picture. So much for Starfleet's word! It was probably that doctor! He certainly hadn't seemed very trustworthy, and now she had the proof! He would pay for this!

USS FEYNMAN: The Harvest

The Commander-in-Chief stormed from his office, his eyes locked on the electronic board that convered the entire north wall. "I want to know what the hell is going on and I want to NOW!" He screamed out in frustration and with the creeping realization that it was something very wrong.

All eyes in the large room glued themselves to the glow of their monitors save for one pair. Colonel Utimba climbed up the three stairs to the command level and faced his general. He gestured to the north-east quadrant on the early warning board. "They entered into orbit approximately 4 minutes and thirty-two seconds ago."

"How many?" The general asked as his eyes scanned the readouts around the room. All armed forces were on high alert, interceptors were in the air and all their nuclear forces had been put on a thirty minute countdown.

"12 small and one large, the small ones could hold 10 of our carriers and the large one could easily hold the 12 small ones."

The general turned, shock clearly on his face. "The Republic?" It was obvious that their terrestial enemy could not be responsible so Utimba took the question as it was meant. "Like us they are on high alert, missiles on line, nucs in the air and boomers going deep."

The general swore and lifted the receiver from the desk. "Get me the First Minister.

Admiral Coheis leaned back into her high backed chair and savored the smell emanating from her steaming mug of hilati. It was about the only thing she was enjoying this cold rainy morning. Whoever the genius back at fleet was who ordered an unscheduled training op in the middle of the winter storm season was going to get a foot up his backside when the fleet put into port in 3 weeks. Full alert indeed! World tension was the calmest it'd been in over 15 years and even those crazy Ryuli's wouldn't lauch a sneak attack through this muck.

She raised her viewscope to her eyes and looked through the bridge's main windshield, its wipers carelessly flinging sleet from the glass in all directions. On the deck the last of the all-weather interceptors had been launched. To the east, the missile cruiser STALWART bobbed up and down on the rough scenes. "I'll have someone's head for this." She fumed to herself.

"Sir?" A officer within earshot asked.

"Mind your station commander." She answered curtly before taking a sip from her mug.

"Aye sir."

Coheis turned back to stare out the window at the STALWART, her attention caught by the wild flashing of one of it signal lamps. Thirty years ago when she had graduated from the Naval Academy she had been assigned as a communications officer so, although a little rusty, she had little problem deciphering the flashes. It was obviously not an offically communique and she wondered idely what her own ships lamper would report to his superior when pressed for what the STALWART had sent. Probably something along the lines of 'all's well.' After all thats what she used to tell her superior when she had been the one standing out in the cold and the rain busily complaining to her comrades on the other ships. She smiled at the memory.

"Admiral!" Captain Kiloc shouted out as he bounded up the stairs from the control center. Coheis didn't like the tone and her eyes flashed to the radar displays. Strangely they were blank. "All satellite communications have been cut, we've lost our eyes!"

Damn! "Signal the fleet to flank and come about to port, heading due north." The order was punctured by a blazing light to port followed almost instaneously by a deafening blast. All heads turned. The STALWART was gone.

The Admiral jumped from her chair. "Order all ships weapons free!" It was the last thing she ever said.

***** ***** ***** *****

They came by the thousands. Large, black, square drop ships each carrying a hundred warriors. They simply fell from the sky, an easy target for the defenders guns. But even the precision fire could not stop them all. They couldn't even stop enough.

Around the planet the drop ships landed and the warriors emerged. They marched outward destroying everything in their path, soldier and civilian, the strong and the weak. The defenders fought bravely but inevitably they were overwhelmed.

The First Minister sat at his desk the explosions from the compound wringing in his ears. Six hours! It was all over in six hours. How could that be? Gun fire erupted down the hall. They were coming. Soon it was in his outer office and he stood, steadying himself for the inevitable. He would surrender to save his people.

The door burst open and his four security officers drew their weapons and were vapourised immediately. The aliens strode in and the minister tried to keep his face impassive at the sight of them. The largest of the group approached him and in some indecipherable language spoke. His voice crackled in reply and before he could finish the sentence the alien leader struck out at him knocking him to the floor.

The leader turned to its soldiers and 'clicked' some orders before heading back down the hallway from which it arrived. The soldiers moved on the First Minister and as his agonizing screams rang out they began to feed.

USS FEYNMAN: Arrival

by Andrew Catterick 10-19-1996

SD: 81019.0900
MD: 3.1645
Scene: Lakeside Park, Holodeck 3

The afternoon was drawing to a close. With most of the sports activities over the FEYNMAN crew had assembled itself into small pockets of conversation and quiet laughter. For his part Zane chose to unwind alone. He had a lot to think about and after wandering from group to group to make sure everyone was relaxing he found himself strolling along the pebble strewn beach. He stopped near an old log and sifted through the rocks to find a handful of smooth flat ones. It had been along time since he tried....His first toss saw the rock plunk unceremoniuosly into an approaching wave but soon he had reaquired his skill and was closing in on his alltime record of skips. Part of his mind carefully analyzed wave frquency, trajectory, the weight of the rock and acceleration but the rest just thought back to boyhood days and whether or not there were any holographic water spiders he could try to bomb with bigger rocks. He smiled at the memory but the smile slowly faded as he watched a rock sink to the bottom and the captain in him reminded him of the coming unknowns.

[Brige to Captain Zane.]

"Zane here."

[We're leaving Federation space sir.]

"Time?" The captain asked as one of his rocks skipped 7 times befroe being devoured by a rolling wave.

[16:50 sir]

They were 22 minutes ahead of schedule, he'd have to commend Koreth and his team. "Very well. Maintain the sensor sweeps and course and speed. Zane out."

And so it began.

"Secure from warp, ahead full impulse."

"Full impulse aye." The FCO replied as his fingers danced across his board.

Zane spun in his chair to face tactical. "Lt. Allard?"

"Sensors show no other ships in the vicinity. I am picking up a large debris field at 325 mark 78."

Zane spun back. "Lt. Jenn?"

"No unknown readings. Bringing the DELPHI Array to bear. All sensor gathering systems online."

"ETA Mr. Jerran?" Commadner Maril asked.

"Seventeen minutes to the edge of the debris field."

Although orders 'demanded' his presence at Bat's holodeck baseball game, Tarrant had decided instead to prepare for the work ahead. Last time they had a game, his arm was in a sling due to his battle with a changeling...

The Serapis was a large ship, and from the reports of how she was destroyed, the debris field would be huge. He and his staff had been mulling over the best way to go through the wreckage.

"Sir, announced Ens. Dunnon, we are approaching the debris field... Delphi is being initiated by the bridge."

Tarrant nodded. "All required power to the Delphi, I want two men on that system round the clock. We'll be putting in overtime with it, and we need to keep her cool."

"Tarrant to Bridge"

<Bridge here, what is it Lieutenant?> Came Zane's voice.

"I'd like to suggest a combined effort of the Delphi and Shuttlecrafts to go through the debris field. It would require those with a class 4 or above rating to navigate the less dense areas... but it could save us some time."

>Jerran raised an eyebrow and said, somewhat disbelieving himself, "Yes, sir." He then turned to the Ops station and said, "Care to join me, LT Jenn? I could use a decent copilot on the NOGURA."

"Only if you promise not to get yourself knocked out this time?" she grinned.

He nodded with a chuckle and the two stood and headed for the turbolift on their way to the shuttlebay.

"Be careful," she heard Zane say as they walked by him.

"Oh course, sir," said Jerran. Krysa met Zane's eyes briefly and nodded before following Jerran into the turbolift.

As the turbolift doors closed, Jerran began to explain how he would like the mission to run and what he wanted Krysa to do, but Krysa's mind wandered back to the Captain's dark eyes, which had been full of concern, though the mission was a relatively simple one. Despite the fact that she'd had been overly cautious the past couple of days about using her empathy, she had been able to read his concern. The eyes were much harder to disguise, and despite his usually stoic demeanor, the captain's eyes were very expressive.

"Krysa, are you listening to me?" came the voice of the FCO.

She turned to look at him, and began to nod slightly, then shook her head.

"I'm sorry, Terri, I was distracted. What were you saying?"

Jerran looked at her with narrowed eyes, "You'll have to do better then that when we're on the shuttle. I don't want to crash into any of the debris out there."

Krysa chuckled, "I'll be right with you, I promise."

"Okay, I'll go over this one more time. I should be able to handle most of the flying while you man the sensors. Particularly when it comes to small pieces of debris I might miss. In this kind of debris field, sometimes the smallest pieces can be the most deadly."

Krysa nodded, she could do that with no problem. This was going to be fairly routine debris check and they shouldn't run into any problems.

As they boarded the runabout, Krysa took her seat and began to check the readiness of the sensors as Jerran did a preflight check. Within a short time they were ready to go and Jerran was calling the flight deck to get clearance to depart.

<You have clearance, sir.>

"Excellent," said Jerran with a wink at Krysa as he gently urged the runabout off the floor of the shuttlebay and out the shuttlebay doors. "This is the runabout Nogura, we are on our way and will intercept the debris field in 12 minutes."

Krysa had already began her scans as the runabout sped toward the debris field. She picked up the readings of the other shuttles as they made their way to different areas of the debris field, but so far their were little to no readings from the field itself.

Regards,
Lt. Krysa Jenn

The first officer looked over to the Captain and smiled. "Those two together in one shuttle..."

Zane chuckled. "I know."

"Perhaps we should move the ship a little farther away from the debris." Maril offered. Zane just smiled in response before turning back towards the viewscreen to watch the debris slow spin by. It was an eerie sight.

Zane remained silent as the bridge crew quietly worked around him. All were busy and once again he found himself wishing he had had a stronger aptitude for science. Unfortunately it was not to be so he contented himself with the tactical scanners that he had called up on his armrest console. Nothing within scanning range, but he wondered grimly what might be over the 'horizon'.

"All shuttles away sir." Allard announced.

"On screen." Zane ordered. The magnified debris field flashed to glinting reflections of light from near by stars as the four FEYNMAN shuttles came into view. Almost immediately the lead shuttle, NOGURA, launched itself into a tight series of barrel rolls. Zane looked over at Maril who gave him an 'I told you so' look.

"Helm plot a course that circles the debris field, 1/2 impulse."

"Half impulse aye."

___________________________
MD:4.1400
Scene: Main Cargo Bay, Deck 17

For the past few hours he had remained on the bridge watching the wreckage that had once been SERAPIS float by. In actual fact he had no desire to stray far from the bridge considering the reason they were here. But having a received a rather ominous, 'Sir we've got something down here you'll want to see' he had made his way down into the bowels of the ship.

While the bridge and science departments scanned the wreckage with the DELPHI array and Jerran and Jenn led a closer inspection with the shuttles, the engineering department was beaming pieces of debris onto the FEYNMAN at random for a more thorough investigation. When Zane strode throught the parting heavy doors of the cargo bay he walked into what looked like barely controlled chaos.

The deck, strewn with pieces of the ship was a grim sight and one that the Captain found surprising. As expected there were large fragments of ripped and torn hull, twisted and deformed by the force of the attack and the later explosion. But was not expected were the personal effects scattered throughout the room. A chair here, a book there, a child's toy. For not the first time Zane thanked the gods that the FEYNMAN had not been the first ship on the scene. The unlucky crews of the GHENT and WESTPHALIA had been the one's who had had to retrieve the physical remains of the crew that had not survived but whose bodies had not been vapourised. And if that had not been bad enough all the remains had had to be examined in the hopes of finding a clue as to what had happened to the SERAPIS.

"Excuse me sir." Koreth's deep voice broke his thoughts and he he put the doll back down on the table.

"Any results so far?"

"No sir. We want to retrieve a little more of the debris. Another hour or so and we should have a good cross section to examine. After that it will depend on what there is to find."

<<Jason: Fill in any technobabble stuff that may fit>>

"So what have you got for me?" He asked.

"We found this embedded in the back of a piece of what looks to be a bridge console." Koreth lifted a square plaque up from a workbench.

Zane took it from the engineer and stared down at it for a few seconds. "SERAPIS' dedication plaque." His finger traced the ships motto etched along the bottom. 'I have not yet begun to fight.' *How ironic.* Zane thought bitterly. "Thank you Mr. Koreth." He said quietly. "Anything else?"

"No sir."

"Very well I'll let you get back to your work." Turning he headed back to the bridge. The plague would be kept in his ready-room until the FEYNMAN returned to EPSILON and he could turn it over to the admiral and inevitably the SILVER memorial chapel.

J.C. hit the comm panel, "Bridge to SCPO Tamarov".

"Tamarov here, Sir" replied the aCSO. "Just like we planned, Mr. Tamarov," ordered J.C. "Level 2 security alert. Have all of the squad commanders double the patrols, heavily armed. Extra teams in all sensitive areas around the clock, including here on the bridge. No surprises this mission, Mr. Tamarov."

"Understood, Sir. Tamarov out." Too many things had gone wrong last mission, too many surprises. And J.C. didn't like surprises. Moments later, two officers appeared on the bridge, armed with rifle in hand and sidearm holstered. CPO T'Boc and PO1 Jerry Jonas came to attention. J.C. nodded them on their way, and they took their positions at opposite sides of the bridge, where they would have a clear view of anything and anyone. J.C. mentally pictured similar teams appearing in engineering, the shuttle bay, and other key areas. They would be ready this time.

"Captain, I recommend we launch a series of Class-7 long-range probes. Combine with the Delphi, and our shuttle teams, this should cover almost the entire sector."

LCDR Maril turned, "Lt., wouldn't the probes be redundant of the shuttles?", asked the XO.

"Not really, Sir. The shuttles will be concentrating on the immediate area of the salvage site and surrounding area. The long-range probes will actually extend the range of the Delphi array. In essence, an 'early-warning' system for us, Sirs." Maril turned to Zane, who nodded.

"Make it so, Mr. Allard" said Zane.

"Aye, Sir. Six probes loaded....and launched. We've traded speed for extra sensitivity, so they're only traveling at .25 impulse. Optimum distance in approx. 8 minutes, Sir."

"Very well, Lt." said Maril. J.C. kept a constant watch on the shuttles. The slightest hint of danger and he would tractor them back to the FEYNMAN. He took a deep breath. While the other departments took an active role in missions such as this, his department endured the endless waiting for something to happen, only to react to the unexpected. He had temporarily sent his three Cadets to aid LT. Meleah's department, where he thought they would do the most good.

He eyed Jonas and T'Boc. Jerry Jonas, a Terran, was wiping the barrel of his rifle. T'Boc was glaring at some unknown point straight ahead, with the expressionless look Vulcan's have when in deep thought. J.C. sighed, and called up the systems diagnostics for the weapons controls for the third time this shift....

USS FEYNMAN: Visitors From Beyond

by Andrew Catterick 10-27-1996

SD: 81027.2200
MD: 4.1800
Scene: Bridge

"Captain." The BETA aCSO broke the studious silence of the bridge. "We're picking up an approaching ship on one of our remote probes, bearing three-two-five mark one."

"Red alert!" Maril ordered instantly and then made contact with Lt. Jenn on the NOGURA to warn her of the approaching ship.

"Who is it?" Zane asked, hoping it was not SERAPIS' executioner returning to the scene of the crime.

"Onscreen, full magnification." Zane ordered although the ship was still far enough away that it would be little more than a brighter than usual star. "Configuration?"

"Long cylindrical hull, four large wings starting at 375 metres from the bow and extending out at a 45 degree angle for approximately 100 metres, mass, 1,900,00 metric tonnes. Heavily armed, armoured and shielded. All offensive and defensive systems online. Based on configuration and markings 80% certainty vessel is an Issahi warship comparable to a Federation heavy destroyer."

"Helm plot an intercept course keeping us between the shuttles and the approaching vessel."

"Aye sir," Kaz replied, "Coming to new course: four-five mark six-seven. Increasing speed to full impulse."

"Patch me through to the NOGURA."

"Channel open."

[Seems we have some visitors.] Krysa announced matter-of-factly as her face appeared on the screen.

"We think it's an Issahi warship but we're moving to intercept. Try to keep yourselves out of trouble."

[We've got enough here to keep us busy. Don't worry about us sir. NOGURA out.]

Maril leaned over towards Zane. "A friendly visit?"

"Hope so. But weapons online isn't exactly a amicable opening."

"We are being hailed. Voice only." Allard informed, he had arrived on the bridge seconds after the red alert had sounded.

Zane raised an eyebrow. "Open a channel."

[Identify yourself.] The alien voice demanded.

"This is the Federation starship FEYNMAN. Identify *yourself*" Zane replied just as curtly.

"We are now in weapons range." Allard said quietly enough for only the bridge crew to hear. Zane nodded in response. "The alien ship is now sending a video signal."

"On screen."

[[I am sub-commander Martin Ross of the Issahi Confederacy warship Vigil. You will state your purpose here.]] The human stood in what appeared to be the middle of the Vigil's bridge. Behind him a native Issahi sat staring coldly at the screen. He assumed him? to be the Captain.

Zane decided to lay it all on the table. "This debris field is all that is left of the USS SERAPIS. Several days ago it was destroyed by an unknown force. We have been sent here to investigate." On the viewscreen both Human and Issahi remained impassive. Finally Ross spoke, [The mission of this ship?] The demanding tone was clearly evident.

"SERAPIS was sent on a diplomatic mission to make contact with your government?"

[Purpose?]

"As a follow up to your visit to Starbase EPSILON. It was our hope to continue the dialogue you started with the desire to perhaps establish a realtionship which is mutually beneficial."

The 'captain' of the Issahi ship barked out orders to Ross in a guttural language that the universal tranlator could not decipher. Ross replied and for a few seconds the two seemed to have a heated argument. A loud grunt from the Captain signified the conversation was over and Ross turned back to face the screen. [What is the result of your investigation?]

"Its only in its preliminary stages," Zane replied, "as of yet there are no results."

[Very well we will wait until your investigation is complete and then will escort you to our homeworld.] Again it sounded very much like an order.

"I welcome the opportunity to visit your homeworld and I thank you for the opportunity to meet with your leaders. The investigation will take some time. Perhaps you and your Captain would like to join us on the FEYNMAN as an informal first step."

[No.] The screen when blank.

"A friendly bunch." Maril said somewhat miffed.

"Well it does seem to be in-line with what little we know. I'd like to know what there discussion was about."

"It did seem to be heated." The FO agreed.

"Captain, the Issahi vessel has powered down its weapons but not shields."

Zane looked out at the the dull grey hulled ship with the bright streaks of crimson on its wings. "Do the same Mr. Allard."

<<<NRPG>>>

Well lets not keep our 'friends' waiting, so if anyone's going to find something now would be a good time:)

BTW, for those of you who played Wing Command III the Issahi ship resembles a Terran Confederacy Longbow bomber...just a bit bigger.

Andy

USS FEYNMAN: Breakdown

by Jason Bostjancic 10-28-1996

SD: 81028
MD: 4.1700

"Chief Carden, I am sending down our preliminary findings. I want you to find out whether the substance ytterbium, when used in a weapon such as a phaser beam or photon torpedo, could create a large enough explosion to destroy the Serapis. I also need to know whether there were any chemicals on board the Serapis which would react to the presence of ytterbium. Cadet Bergmann, I need an in-depth analysis on whether ytterbium would be able to shield a warp core."

As time and analysis continued, Science and Engineering eventually found themselves working together... particularly on the possible effects of ytterbium on the Serapis.

Chief Carden and Ens. Dunnon were teamed up, and had been working on what a ytterbium weapon would do. But every report seemed to indicate that the substance wasn't a volatile one. The hull composition of the Serapis and her shields would have been able to stop such a weapon. But the mass of the substance was in such abundance that it had to have been used some how.

Eventually, Meleah and Koreth found themselves in holodeck 2 going over the images Starfleet had put together.... which wasn't much. Most of it was model speculation based on the initial findings and what they could piece together from the Serapis data.

"We've been unable to find any effect that Ytterbium would have on the composits which made up the Serapis's hull. Nor should such a phaser weapon have been able to go through the shields."

If Tarrant hadn't known better, he would have thought Meleah was frustrated.... had she not been machine. He sure was.

"But the hull debris from the Serapis on the port side has been nearly coated with it. It had to have been a weapon."

Meleah shook her head. "No, My team has found no evidence that such a weapon would have any affect."

Tarrant looked at the frozen simulation before him. Something just wasn't right. The Serapis was taken so easily...

"Perhaps we are looking at this from too much of a - *traditional* point of view." Announced Meleah.

"How do you mean."

"We have looked into ytterbium as a weapon, like a phaser or torpedo. Something which works as our weapons.. causing breach type damage."

Tarrant nodded and closed his eyes. "which means that, if ytterbium was used, it would have to be in a different way."

"Assuming it's a weapon at all." Pointed out Meleah.

Tarrant was convinced however that it was. His mind started trying to think of what systems were required by a starship. Warp Core.... engines.... shields... Nav. Deflector.... S.I.F.

"The Structural Integrity Field" whispered Tarrant, his eyes still closed.

"Lieutenant?"

"What if ytterbium affects the SIF?"

Meleah thought on it for a while. Our initial search did only include how it would affect the shields and hull in an energy or torpedo type aspect... it's a plausible theory."

"Computer, download all known data concerning ytterbium and the Structural Integrity Field of the Starfleet Solar Class Vessels."

<Working....... Download Complete>

"Computer, show simulation of what gasseous state ytterbium would have on the Solar Class Vessel, primarily on the Structural Integrity System."

<Working...... Simulation complete.>

The holodeck image morphed again to show just a Solar class vessel. Then the computer allowed a ytterbium gas cloud to come into contact. There was no effect.

Meleah piped in, "Computer, set Solar class vesel to run at 1/2 impulse.... and re-run simulation."

This time the effect was devistating. As the Solar vessel came into contact with the ytterbium its sections began to separate. It was as if the SIF was no longer working at all. The yttebium seemed to react with the field, and cause it to break down.

Their enemy knew them well.....

"Tarrant to Commander Zane... you better come to Holodeck 2."

USS FEYNMAN: Unwanted Answers

by Andrew Catterick 10-28-1996

SD: 81028.1200
MD: 4.1645
Scene: Readyroom

[Captain, you have two messages coming in.]

"Thank-you ensign." Zane replied as he swung his desk terminal around to face him. "Pipe them in here."

Powering up the display he noted that the first was a Starfleet communique from the SILVER JAG office someone had flagged it for him and forwarded it along. Opening the message he scanned down the text at first with a scowl and then with a grin that quickly erupted into a laugh. It seemed his one time blackmailer, Dee, had been picked up by Starfleet Security for impersonating the daughter of a dignitary from the planet Dexertos III. He forwarded the message along to the rest of the senior staff with a flag for both Krysa and Glin'kharr. He wondered which of the two would be more satisfied with Dee's current fate.

The second message was a video recording from Dee herself. It was a rather lengthy message which went from her commendnation of the FEYNMAN's captain to her flattery of him. But one thing was made perfectly clear, she expected Zane to help her out of this mess or she would be talking to Krysa soon after. With a laugh he forwarded Dee's video message along to Krysa. He couldn't wait to get back to EPSILON and see Dee's face when he told her she could do her worst and he didn't care. There was nothing quite as satisfying when the wheel turned.

> [Tarrant to Commander Zane... you better come to Holodeck 2.] > "On my way." He answered as he stood. So much for his good mood, Koreth did not sound happy by any stretch of the imagination.

_______________________
MD: 4.1700
Scene:Holodeck 2

Zane strode into the holodeck to find the USS SERAPIS being pulled apart in slow motion as Meleah and Koreth 'stood' in space quietly watching. They turned as they heard the Captain enter.

"Reset program." Koreth ordered. The SERAPIS flickered from near oblivion to its once proud form. In the backgroud the dark mystery ship approached.

"What have you got?"

"Begin program. Half speed." Koreth ordered.

The scene played itself out as it had done so in the past and 30 seconds later when it ended Zane could not seen any breakthrough. The mystery ship arrived fired its weapon and the SERAPIS was gone. The Captain looked at the two officers. "So?"

"Computer replay program at time index 325.7 1/4 speed."

Again the simulation reconstituted itself but this time it began with the beam from the marauder hitting the SERAPIS. Slowly the SERAPIS began to split apart, and then exploded. The simulation ended. "Some sort of disruptor beam?"

"No sir," Meleah began and she quickly ran down their theories of the ytterbium and its effect on the structural integrity field. Zane considered the theory for a few moments. "It sounds plausible and would certainly explain why so much of the internal effects remained whole. But even if the ship was moving at only a fraction of impulse the crew would have been a thin paste on the bulkheads a millisecond after the SIF failed."

"Thats what we're trying to figure out now." Koreth answered.

"Logically the SERAPIS would have to be at a near stop before the beam hit. Perhaps it also contained a tractor beam." Meleah added.

"Either way it seems this is a powerful weapon." Koreth frowned, a weapon the FEYNMAN or any other Starfleet ship could not withstand.

"We are not entirely sure it is a weapon." Meleah continued. "It could be anyform of beam, perhaps a sensor scan, the only credible theory so far is that a beam containing ytterbium was responsible for destroying the SERAPIS. We can not speculate on intention without further evidence."

Zane and Koreth exchanged a silent glance of agreement. It *was* a weapon. "Continue your tests but I need a write up of your preliminary findings to send to EPSILON as soon as possible. If you come up with anything else I'll be on the bridge."

<<<NRPG>>>

Hmmm...I guess when Zane talks with Ross (in one hour) he won't be as totally forth-coming as I originally thought!;)

USS FEYNMAN: Finishing Data Collection

by Kristen Gant 10-29-1996

Stardate: 81029.1411
Scene: Runabout Nogura
MD: 4.1800

It had been a busy though uneventful shift though the Serapis wreckage for the two officers on the Runabout. Krysa was impressed with the level of information they were able to collect from the wreckage using both the Delphi and the shuttles in conjunction.

Looking over at Terri she thought he looked a little bored. "Nothing interesting enough for you?"

He grinned, "Well not as interesting as an asteroid belt."

"Oh please, don't remind me. I was scared out of my wits!" Krysa chuckled.

<Runabout NOGURA, This is the FEYNMAN. We have company.>

The two officers looked at each other, and Krysa turned her sensors away from the debris field and toward the approaching ship.

"What is it?" asked Jerran looking toward her console.

"Looks like it's probably an Issahi Warship. Heavily armed for battle too, from the look of it."

"Let's hope that isn't what took out the Serapis." Said Jerran.

Krysa chuckled, "Nope. Whatever took out the Serapis was a hundred times worse." She winked at him. "Of course, what it might do to a bunch of shuttles in a debris field wouldn't be pretty."

He nodded, "I agree, let's stay out of it's way."

There was a chirp as the channel reopened to the FEYNMAN. When the bridge of the starship appeared, she spoke, "Seems we have some visitors."

<We think it's an Issahi warship but we're moving to intercept. Try to keep yourselves out of trouble.>

"We've got enough here to keep us busy. Don't worry about us sir. NOGURA out."

Krysa turned the majority of her scanners back to the debris field to continue their search, though she kept an eye on the new ship. Jerran also kept an eye on it. Krysa chuckled, knowing that he was much more interested in the Issahi warship rather then the debris.

Krysa had become intent on some interesting readings in the debris field, when Jerran said, "Their powering down their weapons."

She looked at him. "You should almost disappointed."

He chuckled, "Well, it's be kind fun to see some tactical moves from that ship."

"Shall I inform the Captain and see if we can get them to show off for you, Lt.?"

"Do you think they would?" he joked.

Zane's face once again appeared on the comm screen. <We will be visiting the Issahi homeworld as soon as your investigations are complete here.>

Krysa nodded, "That should take another 5 or 6 hours to be complete, sir."

"Five or six hours," Jerran moaned from the pilot's seat.

<That's fine.> said Zane ignoring the FCO, <I'm not going to rush you. Though Koreth and Meleah have a theory they're working on. Perhaps it'll help narrow our search.>

"Excellent." Krysa said.

<I'm downloading the information to the NOGURA's computers now.>

Krysa looked over as a terminal began to flash. "It's coming though, Captain."

<Okay, let me know when you think you'll be done here.>

Krysa nodded as the screen faded.

With the help of Meleah and Koreth's findings, they were able to narrow the search and find everything they needed in only three more hours. Soon the shuttles were headed slowing back to the FEYNMAN.

Regards,
Lt. Krysa Jenn

USS FEYNMAN: Is Anybody Else Cold Here?

by Max Felsher 10-29-1996

SD 81029.03009 (GMT)
MD 4.1400
SCENE Somewhere out in space

The entity continued to seethe, waiting for the right opportunity to strike. It had waited long enough; soon the metaphor-being would be in its power. There was no way to stop it this time. Its power was much greater closer to the source. Soon, it would have control of the humanoid and its vessel with it.

USS Feynman:Bridge

Maril felt a shiver pass through his body, as though he had just woken up from a dream. He looked around him, but everything was fine.

"Are you okay, Commander?" Captain Zane asked, looking up from his armrest console.

"Fine, sir," Maril replied, trying to look relaxed. "Just a breath from Kirerdo."

Zane nodded knowingly, although his eyes still focused on Maril for a second. Slowly, he turned back to the armrest.

Maril still felt strange, though. That shiver had been no ordinary shiver. It had been colder, almost like an icy grip that had grabbed him without warning.

"What the-" came Lt.(jg) Allard's voice from behind.

"Is there a problem, Lieutenant?" Maril asked curiously, turning his head, as the Captain swung around to look at Allard.

"Ah, no, sir, just a bump in the level of graviton particles about 5 AU's to our starboard for about three seconds. It was probably just a sensor glitch, if it was anything."

"Get someone to check on that, Lieutenant," Zane ordered calmly.

"Aye, sir."

As Zane looked back at a PADD and Allard talked to a junior officer about the sensor array, Maril wondered: was there something really happening, or was he just seeing reskolins in the waves?

MD 4.2000

After a few moments of whispering between Zane and Maril, Zane finally got out of his coveted chair and walked into his Ready Room. Maril didn't sit down in it, however. Although he would have liked to, it was past his shift, so he simply announced:

"Alright, ALPHA shift is over, BETA shift crews take stations. Lieutenant Meleah, you have the Conn."

Meleah looked surprised as she got up from the science station and sat down in the Command Chair. That was odd; Maril doubted that the android had forgotten about her shift. Perhaps it was part of her emotion program.

MD 4.2100 First Officer's Office

Maril glanced at the information collected at the Serapis's destruction site. Remembering the cold grip he had felt earlier, he shivered again. Would this feeling of dread never go away?

The sun has met the sea,
Lt. Commander Onta Maril,
First Officer, USS Feynman,
aka Max Felsher

NRPG: So, that's that.

Sorry for not posting in a while.

I'd estimate that we'll reach the edge of Issashi space at about 6.1200. This would agree with Andy's post which said it would be over 36 hours to the nearest system along that heading. (FYI, Jerran has the shift after Meleah, and Jenn and Koreth have BETA and GAMMA shift the next day.

A weapon which would destroy our SIF would definitely be dangerous. I was reading my tech manual and it seems that if our SIF/IDF fails, the most we can accelerate is 30 m/sec/sec, while full impulse speed can sometimes cause accelerations more than 300 times that.

My best guess on exactly how this weapon would work is that the ytterbium would somehow react with the ceramic-polymer composite that conducts the SIF, thereby not allowing the SIF to operate (since there would be no way to create it.)

USS FEYNMAN: Away We Go

by Andrew Catterick 10-30-1996

SD: 81030.1100
MD: 4.1900
Scene:Ready-Room

[Bridge to Zane.]

"Go ahead." The Captain answered

[The last of the shuttles have landed sir.]

"Thank-you Commander." Zane looked over at his desk computer before calling the CEO. "Zane to Koreth."

[Koreth here.] came the instant reply.

"Lieutenant the shuttles have returned can you continue your investigation with the data that has been collected or do you need more time on site?"

There was a short pause as, Zane assumed, Koreth and Meleah discussed the situation. [Between the physical evidence and the information gathered by the shuttle teams and the main sensors I don't see there being much more information to gather. All we have to do now is put it all together.] That sounded overly optimistic but Zane knew Meleah and Koreth were developing into an excellent team.

"Any more progress?"

[Nothing substantial but the ytterbium theory is becoming more and more likely as additional information is added.]

Zane frowned to himself. He was pleased with the results of the investigation thus far but the conclusions were not ones he had wanted. A beam that would rip apart a ship by using its own SIF field against it was unthinkable. Of course the end result was a destroyed ship, it really didn't matter if it was a ytterbium beam or an incredibly powerful phaser array. "Good. We'll be warping out within the hour. Zane out."

He turned back to his desk computer and after a few small edits to his status report he re-read it for the final time.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>=/\=<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
TO: Adm Nicholas Azariah, CINCSILVER
FROM: Capt. Zane, USS FEYNMAN
RE: Status Report
SD: 81030
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Initial investigation of USS SERAPIS wreckage site complete. No additional remains recovered.

2. Investigation teams speculate USS SERAPIS destroyed by energy beam containing element ytterbium. Ytterbium beam would use vessels SIF to pull ship apart. Examination continues. <<SEE ATTACHED>>

3. Contacted by Issahi Confederacy Warship. Communication with Martin Ross <<SEE ATTACHED>>

4. Universal Translator unable to decipher Issahi language due to minimal exposure.

5. Proceeding to Issahi home world.

Zane, commanding, sends.

END >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>=/\=<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

A quick glance to make sure that the investigation teams preliminary reports as well as the tape of Zane's conversation with Ross were attached and the report was surrendered to subspace. "Computer how long for that message to reach Starbase EPSILON?"

<Seven point three hours.> Was the pleasant response.

Rising from his chair he headed for the bridge. "Mr. Allard open a channel to the VIGIL."

"Channel open." Ross appeared on the screen.

[You have finished Captain.] It was a statement not a question.

"We have. Unfortunately we have been unable to ascertain what destroyed the SERAPIS. I'm afraid it will remain a mystery unless further evidence presents itself." Part of Zane did not like the fact that he was lying to potential new friends. His instincts told him they would be strong allies but his training reminded him they could just as easily be new enemies as well.

The Issahi Captain hissed something at Ross. "We will depart for the homeworld immediately." The screen returned to a view of the starfield.

"Captain. The Vigil is leaving the system."

"Helm, stay with them."

"Aye sir. Coming to new course three-four-eight mark four-five. Increasing speed to warp 6."

Zane turned to face the science station. "Lt. Swanson, has the universal translator made any more progress with the Issahi language?"

"A little sir. But we need a few more minutes of substantial dialogue before it will be able to translate with any accuracy."

He turned back to look at Maril with a shrug and a grin. "No challenge if we had all the answers."

Maril snorted in agreement. "I wonder just where we are going?"

"Long range scans show several systems on or near this heading but at this speed they are 36 hours away." The officer at OPS added.

Zane considered the information. "They'd have to be at least that far or we'd have heard from the Issahi long ago. I guess its a case of wait and see. Besides the longer we have the more time for Koreth and Meleah to figure out exactly what happened to the SERAPIS and hopefully come up with some sort of defence against it."

"Like Jilati from the mountain." Maril offered wisely.

"Exactly." Zane agreed wondered who the hell Jilati was and what he did on the mountain. He chided himself for not reading more Tamarian mythology. Until then he would never no how often his first officer was pulling his leg.

<<<NRPG>>>

Well here we go! The edge of inhabited Issahi space will probably be some distance away or as Zane said SF would have bumped into them already. And I imagine the home world will be some distance past that. Of course we don't have to RP a long boring journey but once we get into Issahi space proper I imagine there'll be things to see!

Looking forward to actually getting there though. The Issahi seem to be a very enigmatic race.

Andy
