In the wake of the coup that brought Praetor Shinzon to power and his subsequent deposal, relations between the United Federation of Planets and Romulan Star Empire began to improve. Among the efforts to build and sustain a lasting peace, diplomatic missions from Federation member worlds were opened on Romulus.

Sodahk ’s mother, T’lung, was assigned to the Vulcan mission. She fell in love with a Romulan military attache, Taev tr’Ruwan, and, with the permission of both governments, they were married. Sodahk was born a little over a year later in 2381.

Showing early-emerging telepathic abilities, Sodahk was tutored by his mother in Vulcan mental disciplines. By age three, he showed a mixture of Vulcan touch-based skills and the rarer Romulan ability to communicate and sense presences at a distance. It was theorized that his mixed heritage had awakened to primal and ancient telepathic genes usually dormant in both Romulans and Vulcans.

Relations between the Star Empire and Federation have waxed and waned through Sodahk ’s life. Only a decade after their marriage, a group opposed to the new government launched an attack on the Vulcan mission. Taev was killed and T’lung was badly injured. She was stabilized and sent back to Vulcan to recover, taking her young son with her.

Due to a protracted period of recover for T’lung, Sodahk lived with his maternal grandparents who did not quite know what to do with the child and the ideas that he brought with him from his early education in the Romulan school system. His mother had taught him Vulcan values and disciplines, but they were muddled by a different set of values taught by s teacher on ch’Rihan.

From the age of 9, Sodahk was raised and educated on Vulcan. His Romulan heritage was a point of contention for some of his peers and he was bullied in school. Nevertheless, he continued to receive a Vulcan education with particular emphasis on meditation and controlling his telesper skills and telepathic abilities.

He threw himself into the study of the Vulcan martial arts including Suus Mahna, Sha'mura, and Tal-shaya. Wanting to connect with his Romulan heritage he also studied Romulan martial arts including Kormerek. Seeking a deeper connection to his own body, Sodahk also studied Vulcan neuro-pressure techniques and branched into the study of Vulcan meditation. He began his study under the Kolinahr master T’Sas. Rather than completing his studies, Sodahk enlisted in Star Fleet.

Sodahk ’s first rating was as a master at arms. He eventually transitioned to being a boatswain’s mate and served as deck chief in marine transports.
