Background Summary --------------------- Harris grew up in a supportive family and distinguished himself early on by his easy-going personality, despite his ungainly size. Early on he earned the nickname "Happy" from his father since he almost always wore a smile. At school, he towered over all the other children and for many years was quite embarrassed at the attention it brought him, much of it negative. Stereotypically seen as large and slow-witted, he found the early school years challenging and had to cultivate a scrappy personality to go along with his normal good humor. His slow-going attitude couldn't forever hide his quick mind, however, and by the time he'd reached middle school his teachers and classmates began to take notice. His intellectual growth began to keep pace with his physical and he expressed a keen desire to understand how the world around him worked. His search led him to the sciences, particularly astronomy and computers (with which he had a considerable affinity). When interest in the sciences led to interest in Starfleet, his family didn't stand in the way. Once in Starfleet, Hap distinguished himself as a generalist among an increasingly specialized officer corps. While it sometimes proved a liablity in gaining the attention of superiors, it also meant he was able to contribute to a wide variety of scenarios. Thus, he's experienced the breadth of Fleet service, from picket duty to scientific survey, from diplomacy to open conflict. During all of it, he's maintained his 'easy does it' personality and workman-like approach to duty; one that positions him well for future command. Recently, his career has been sidetracked by conflict between he and a former CO, leading to groundside reassignment. It's uncertain whether this mark against him will spoil what has otherwise been an exemplary career. ========================================================================= IV. Skills Profile ================== Harris has considerable skill when it comes to computers and electronic devices. Additionally, his fluency with mathematics, physics, and astronomy give him an advantage in navigation/astrogation. He is widely read and cross-trained on a number of ship systems though lacks much of the specialized knowledge a department head most often has in a relevant discipline. He has been a boxer and wrestler since adolescence and can put his formidable size to good use in hand-to-hand combat. He has trained his memory and is able to recall, in detail, whatever he reads. ========================================================================== VI. Recent Fitness Reports ========================== Though his height and weight are somewhat abnormal, Sonny Harris appears to be in good health with normal biofunction. He could stand to lose a few pounds in order to gain higher mobility and further aerobic exercises would increase his cardiac function, however he has thrived at his current level for some time so no concern is warranted. Disease, allergies, medical problems: none seem present. Harris is cleared for active duty. -- Dr. Andrew Emory Chief Surgeon, USS CURIE ========================================================================== VII. Psychological Profile ========================== While "Hap" Harris might be aptly named, it's clear his demeanor hides a degree of discomfort both with his dimensions and his current accomplishments. With his latest rotation away from shipboard duty and resentment towards former CO, Commander Dillard, I feel he will inevitably have questions about his ability and his capacity to make good decisions in stressful situations. This can often be a good check for those in line command but he should be observed to see that it doesn't become a recurrent, negative thought. Nevertheless, his sense of honor and duty, capacity for objective assessment, self-awareness, amiability, intelligence and intuition are all present in quantities one would expect to find in good Starfleet Command Officers. -- Dr. Sheldon McAvoy Staff Psychologist, OUTPOST 28 ========================================================================== VIII. Current Recreational Interests ================================== Growing up in rural environs, Harris has a fondness for outdoors activities like camping and fishing. He keeps fit with boxing, wrestling, and swimming. Likewise, he is an avid reader whose interest are mostly technical and technological; he has very little interest in 'fluff'. His prime recreation, however, is socializing with others. Whether it's playing cards, watching vids, or sharing a meal, most of his free time is spent out among his fellow officers and crew. ==========================================================================
