His mother is half-Romulan and his father half-Vulcan. Both parents were brought up exclusively on Veldan and have turned away from their respective "other" halves. Denal was born in Regis-Caldano, a middle class suburb of the Veldan planetary capital. His parents are middle class workers, with no ambition to be anything else. His older sister is a contractor working for the same corporation as his father. Denal always wanted something more. Growing up he dreamed of adventures in far away places and was never content to follow the path his parents set for him. He excelled at school, not to please them, but to ensure he could succeed as he grew. He also used his academics as an escape from the history of his family, and the problems he had in dealing with other students growing up. Denal received an appointment to the Veldan Military Academy and was there for the first two years of his education. When presented the opportunity to be transfer to an off world Academy he took it, alienating his parents in the process. He graduated in the top 50% of his class, excelling in practical engineering, but was not as good in the theoretical courses. Denal is also a prankster, enjoying making his commanding officer's and fellow worker's lives interesting. Aboard his first command he was initially assigned to shuttle maintenance and Assistant Damage Control Assistant. He was instrumental in several damage control incidents. Proving himself, he assumed greater resposibilities and was qualified in Navigation and Tactical positions aboard he previous ships. He generally wants to have fun, and tries hard to make sure that others are having as much fun as he is, often through his pranks. Veldan religious, cultural, and physiological notes: Veldan (Aetheria IV) orbits slightly farther from its core than Earth, along with being a slightly cooler solar body. The resultant colder temperatures makes Veldan all but unihabitable, however, the planet itself has an active core making the central portions of the planet pleasant, if prone by earthquakes. While similar to humans in most respect Veldans have adapted to their planetary environment by an increased tolerance of cold, and a paling of the skin. Generally hair runs to a darker shade, and pure black hair is considered a sign of great destiny within the planet. Culturally Veldan has a bicameral governing system. The chosen families elect the Chief of State and upper house (Conclave). The rest of the citizenry vote for the lower house (Commons). The Commons has limited foreign (ie extra-system) power, primarily focused on domestic issues. Religion Religion plays a significant role in the society of Veldan. Religious beliefs are based on a monotheocratic belief, however, the focus is the fight against the ever present cold of the northern and southern latitudes. At the age of 16 religion dictates a trial of passage (called the Trial) in the outer reaches of the planet to test the worthiness of the individual. At the completion of the ordeal the individual is rated, that rating given during a religious ritual rite of passage during which the area over the right eye is tattoed in gold or blue depending on the "class" and the number of points of the star indicate how difficult the trial was. At the age of 20 each person decides on a general career path which modifies the tatoo of the Trial. Red for military, Green for healing, etc. At the age of 24 each individual chooses a name to describe his or herself. That person then uses it in the place of a given middle name. If a person is later found to be unworthy, or turns his/her back on society the tatoo is outlined in black, allowing for redmeption, but noting their pariah status. END BIO FILE
