NOTES

DEEP SPACE 13 is a medium size modular station designed to be easily
deployed, assembled and disassembled in its place of residence. It
consists of 5 greatly independent modules, named Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta
and Omega. All but Beta are cylinder-like shaped, of 225 meters length and
150 meters of diameter. Section Alpha is a command Type III section, while
sections Gamma, Delta and Omega are different civilian Type VI sections.
Section Beta is an orthohedron of 225 meters of side and 300 meters height
engineering Type II section modified to hold main Shuttlebay. All sections
are connected through umbilicals and special gel-connected free rotating
heads. Energy conduits and computer wiring is designed to allow free
rotation between the modules, but standard operation should minimize the
rotation of sections to facilitate cargo and embark operations. All
modules can be isolated from the rest in case of emergency.

Propulsion systems provide the station with the ability to move itself
around once deployed and assembled for small distances (tipically to
change orbits or similar maneuvres), provided by the networks of specially
designed thrusters (anyway, due to the displacement of the station,
trhusters have a poor performance).

All sections but Beta has 12 decks, Beta having just 11 high ceiling
decks. This makes a total of 59 decks, which are localted by
section-number up-down (eg. Alpha-3 is deck #3 and Gamma-9 is deck #32).
All sections have a 36 meters diameter cylindrical core that contains the
main wirings and energy conduits shared with the other sections. Section
Beta has, besides the M/AM reactor core, a backup reactor, main
engineering and main shuttlebay. Sections Alpha and Beta are considered
security critical and are separated from the civilian sections by several
security layers.

Decks B-1 and -2 on section Beta and deck 7 in the rest of the sections
are exclusively dedicated and designed to host a modified version of the
ORACLE Sensor Phalanx, designated ORACLE IIs. Modifications to the basic
ORACLE design, due to the lack of a distorting warp field while in
operation and greater space availability has allowed to install a sensor
network with broader multi-scan capabilities and range in all frequencies
than any starship class. Equipped whith this and other enhancements taken
from the successful AUGUR sensor networks, DS13 perfectly fulfills its
primary role as a Deep Space surveyor, controlling the Gorn and Tholian
boundaries with Federation territory. Adding to this, DS13 is surrounded
by a shell of 174 class 1 and 2 Sensor Probes, deployed at a distance of 7
light-seconds from the station. They serve multiple purposes, as
amplifying the station sensoring capabilities as well as augmenting the
resolution by a 31%. All this capacity is further enhanced by the
excellent sensor systems and great mobility of its support CHARON-class
FL, USS TITANIA.

Decks B-8, -9 and -10, where the main M/AM reactor is hosted, are
specially prepared to allow de emergency shutdown and expulsion of the
core in case of inminent breach, via several protocols. It has been
calculated that the station would only suffer a drop to 12% of the shields
if the ejection of the core would happen 30 seconds before detonation.

Decks Gamma-6, -7 and -8 hold a promenade. Despite the fact that the
primary roles of the station are Starfleet oriented, it will also hold
merchant ships and civilians.

The station is defended by an array of phasers fed by each module reactor
core. This phaser strips have been modified so the power output is greater
per unit length. This allows for smaller strips, which provide safer
conditions for the ,ain station weapon, as it makes them harder to be
disabled. Additionally, several quantum torpedoes launchers and 4 pulse
phaser cannons provide stronger defensive capabilities. These are attached
to sections Alpha (A) and Omega (W) attachment ports as independent
modules, fed by their own engines and helped by the station reactors. A
Point Defense laser system is being installed to provide better defense
against small crafts and torpedoes or missiles. A THUNDERBOLT-class
Destroyer has been assigned to DS13, the USS SPITFIRE, which makes it even
heavierly defended. Standard multiphasic deflector systems provide a
suitable shield for the station. For intra-station defense, DS13 accounts
a standard complement of 420 Marines (3 Starfleet modules 140*3. The two
civilian modules have Navy or UFP Marshalls security).

DS13 has suitable acommodation for diplomatic delegations, providing big
areas for native biospheres for liasons of Gorn, Tholian and Rihannsu
potencies. It has also extensive medical facilities, being able to attend
emergencies from damaged ships or evacuation of colonies (although there
are no known colonies near the station). If any off-station diplomatic
mission arise, the USS TITANIA is well suited with specialised areas for
native biospheres and appropriate PRO support. This provides the USS
SPITFIRE greater freedom to act as an escort vessel.

Operation Center (Ops), sited on decks Alpha-2 and -3, is equipped with
dedicated areas for Flight Control and Fleet Command operations,
accordingly with the station secondary mission profile.

The station can be assembled and get completely functional within a week.
Disassembling can be accomplished in 1.9 days. Emergency disassembling,
however, can be achieved in 1.3 hours. Thruster systems give the station
the ability to move from one place to another, although they are not
designed to move the station like a starship would. The station does not
possess any rotation around its axis to avoid problems with docked ships
and to facilitate ships operations. Transport to goal locus can be easily
acomplished by towing the different sections with a flotilla of ATs
escorted by some FLs.

Additionally, DS13 has been assigned a class II spacedock facility,
situated 10 km away of the station. Class II spacedock repair facilities
can assist and repair slight or medium damage ships up to the size of a
MAGELLAN-class Heavy Cruiser. Two cargo containers are assigned to the
repair facility, both can be easily moved by assembly with a Warp Tug TA.
The support ships TITANIA and SPITFIRE are usually locked by some small
tractor beams and umbilicals to section Beta.
