USS FEYNMAN: #4: Semiconscious

by Charles Jencks 6-2-1996

USS FEYNMAN
Sickbay

Krazny Oktyabr felt something. He'd gone into a meditative trance when the phaser stun wore off, so that shouldn't have happened. His eyes flickered open, only to see some medical personell... in blue uniforms like his own - and for the record he preferred red, which was, after all, in his name - huddled over him.

And then a hypo came to his neck, and he was sedated. Unconscious again.

And in his subconscious, he wondered if Sally was in Sickbay. At least he knew he was back on the FEYNMAN - he'd recognized one of the nurses, whom he'd been counseling lately, about the death of her cousin. Or was it nephew? He couldn't recall, not while he was unconscious.

NRPG: Always wanted a chance to play out being unconscious. Don't worry, it was a light sedative, he can be up and about in a couple posts... you don't even have to wait for me. But he'll be in Sickbay until further notice.

USS FEYNMAN: Tarrellians Running Around the Ship:)

by Kristen Gant 6-2-1996

*Krysa..* She heard the voice through the fog that clouded her head. It was a familiar voice that she couldn't place. *Krysa, please hear me.*

She opened her eyes only to find it was still dark, but from what she could tell there was no one in the room with her, "Who...?"

*Krysa....* She realized that the voice wasn't in the room with her it was from somewhere else. And the voice... who's??

*Kavan?* she thought. *Yes! Where are you?*

She tried to sit up and felt the room spin, so laid back down. *I don't know... it's dark. I think I've been drugged, because I don't feel very good.*

*Krysa, we're going to find you. Dr. Glin'karr has a plan.*

*You're on the ring?* she called but there was no response, the link was gone.

She was beamed in with the rest of her crew. She glared at the man next to her considering strangling him right there in the brig of the FEYNMAN, despite the fact that he probably had nothing to do with it. He noticed her look and backed away. That made her feel a little better. She moved to the front of the cell and looked out.

One of the security officers saw her, in her Starfleet uniform, "Sir," he said recognizing the Ops officer, "We didn't know you were on that ship."

"It's alright, Ens.," she said in the sickly sweet voice she had come to despise. But it had fooled that Counselor for a while, perhaps she could use it to her advantage. "I'm not sure anyone knew I was there. They took my commpinn," she indicated the empty space on her chest where the comm pin should be.

He motioned for the other two guards to keep an eye on the other prisoners while he opened the security shield to let the Lt. out. As soon as the security shield was down, the woman yelled "Now!" and jumped quickly pummeling the security guard closest to her, then grabbing his phaser she stunned the surprised man at the control panel. Turning she saw her crew had over come the other guard as well.

They moved the three security guards into the cell and quickly moved out of the brig.

Scene: Bridge

"Sir, there is phaser fire in the brig," called Garret from Ops.

"Security to brig," ordered Zane.

Regards,
Lt. Krysa Jenn

NRPG: Okay here are some assumptions that I made in order for this to work :)

1) The three security guards are only stunned. I'm assuming that phasers above stun couldn't be used in the brig...

2) It probably won't take long for the Feynman to track down the Tarrellins using their sensors, but they can attempt to get a shuttle or transporter or something... Also that the other Jenn is a not very nice Tarrellian :)

What I'm not sure of is what exactly the Order is... is it Tarrellians ??? I guess with this post I've kinda set it up that way, huh? :)

USS FEYNMAN: Getting a Little Over-Confident

Zane looked up at the security station, his muscles tensing and adrenalin flowing. In a strange way he was excited by this new development and was ready to meet it, head on. "Mr. Sr'qwon?"

"Sealing off Deck 15, forcefields erected in corridors A-13 through J-16, Engineering is sealed. Sounding Intruder alert. There are three security teams heading in."

"Shall we?" Zane gestured to the turbo-lift and accepted the phaser the CSO had pulled from the cabinet under the console. A quick check confirmed it was charged and set for stun.

"Mr. Jerran, you have the bridge. Contact our tech teams on the OLYMPIA and let the know I want them to speed it up. And let the Captain know that as soon as they beam out he is to take his ship to EPSILON immediately with no diversions."

"Aye sir." Jerran replied, relinquishing the helm to his replacement and heading for the center seat.

As the turbolift door closed Zane hit his commbadge. "Zane to Lt. Koreth. We've had a bit of a jail break, you may want to expect a little company."

[We're all prepared down here Captain. We'll be very hospitable.]

Zane smiled. A group of fanatic's running around on his ship. Not only did they have no where to run they had to face the FEYNMAN's CSO along with two security officers from the past. As far as Zane was concerned this would be easier than a first year simulation. Of course he didn't know they had an OPS officer leading them.

USS FEYNMAN: Following A Lead...

Maril looked around for some clues. After Stio Abigacho's tour of the settlement, he had decided to go to the Spaceport. After all, they had to figure out how the disease had gotten into the settlement in the first place. He was also investigating the reason that there was no panic, no one frightened of this terrifying plague.

He stopped at a "newstand", a place where current information was distributed.

"How much is this?" Maril asked, pointing to one of the printed relayers of information, a "newspaper".

"One birad, please."

Maril paid the one birad, then glanced through the newspaper, an assortment of factual articles opinionated columns, and other not-so-useful information. 'How could people have found the path with such items of Abeba,' Maril wondered.

However, one article in particular caught his interest. The title of the story was "Androxites' Sick Numbers Swell."

The article started off with the fact that the Androxites, a religious sect in the settlement, had had many sick people over the last twenty-five weeks as compared to the twenty-five weeks before that. The general number of sick people was also up, but not by nearly so much. There were several quotes from different officials, but what Maril was really interested in was how the Androxites had gotten sick, as the symptoms listed paralelled pretty closely those of the Tarellian plague.

As Maril wanted to pursue this lead, he tried to find another "newstand", but one that had medical journals. Unfortunately, when he found an article on that subject, it basically said that there was no known reason for this sudden increase.

Maril sighed. Although he wasn't giving up this lead, he would have to go back to the house.

MD 4.1130
88 Sikia Way: Front Hall

As Maril walked into the house, he accessed the settlement private telecommunications station and again put in the code for Stio Abigacho.

"Hello, Mr. Maril. What can I do for you?"

"Well, Mr. Abigacho, I would like to find out what you know about the Androxites."

"The Androxites...hmmm. Part of the Farida religion. Strictly religious. Never go outside at night. Always eat dafala bread at sunrise and sundown."

Suddenly, Maril's face lit up. "Hmmm.... I have an idea. Please meet me at the Spaceport Trade Center."

"Alright. I'll be there before you will."

USS FEYNMAN: Do You Want to Eat That Bread Now?

by Max Felsher 6-3-1996

SD 80603.0300(GMT)
MD 4.1200
EI Ring: N-L Settlement: Western Section: Spaceport Trade Center
Post #9

As Maril walked into the Trade Center, he looked for his young friend, Stio Abigacho. He didn't expect him to be there, since Maril was much closer to the STC when he contacted Abigacho.

To his surprise, Abigacho was there already. "What took you so long?" the young Neo-Luddite asked when Maril reached him.

"Only the swallow compared to the swift," Maril replied, sighing. Abigacho gave him a funny look, like he thought Maril was crazy, but Maril just smiled.

"So, what did you want me to come here for?" Abigacho asked.

"You mentioned that the Androxites always always eat dafala bread at sunrise and sundown. The Androxites' sick numbers have swelled in the last twenty-five weeks. I was wondering if the bread was contaminated."

"Don't you think the doctors would have found something like that?"

"Not necessarily. There are many ways the doctors could have missed it. Faulty equipment, not in that particular sample, etc."

"And you would have better luck?" Abigacho cried out incredulously.

Maril just gave a look that showed that he was hiding something.

"Well, see if you can get some dafala bread from one of the workers," Abigacho suggested.

Maril walked up to one of the workers sitting behind a desk. He looked bored, like there wasn't much going on.

"Excuse me, could you get me some dafala bread?" Maril asked.

The worker yawned. "Well, our last shipment of dafala bread--in fact, our last shipment at all--came in ten hours ago. I can get you some, but it will cost you ten birads a loaf."

"Ten birads!" Abigacho screamed out. "You could get a toaster for that much! Seven and a half is high!"

"Ten birads," the man repeated, obviously angry.

"I'm telling you-"

"It's alright, Stio," Maril interrupted quickly. "I will pay the ten birads." He handed over the ten birads. Moments later, the worker came back with a rather large loaf of dafala bread.

As they left, Maril said, "Alright, you can go back home. I will probably need your help soon, but not right now."

"Fine," Abigacho shrugged. "You know where to find me."

MD 4.1300
East Central Section: Sikia Way

Maril wakled down Sikia Way, almost to the house the away team had rented. He had dropped off the loaf of dafala bread at the team's "doctors' office", since most of the complex medical equipment was there instead of at the house.

Suddenly, the subcutaneous communicator activated. [Security to Maril. The message we received from the perimeter camps at 1000 hours has been decoded. Only text.]

"What took so long?" Maril whispered, knowing the security team would be able to hear it.

[Some of our decoding technology broke down at 1030 hours, sir. Also, the medical team just found something. They say that they will be at the house in fifteen minutes.]

"Well, I will be at the house in a moment," Maril said, walking up the steps. "I am entering the house now."

And as he said that, he did.

MD 4.1320
88 Sikia Way: Living Room

"So, this virus was embedded in the dafala bread?" an officer asked. Maril had called all of the officers back to the house to have a meeting.

"That is true," one of the "doctors" at the "doctors' office" replied.

"But it is only activated when it is touched by saliva?" Maril wanted to make sure he understood.

"That is also true. However, once it is activated, it acts just like the Tarellian Plague--it becomes very contagious."

"Which makes it a very effective way to infect a settlement. Not only can it reach almost everyone in the settlement, but it is almost undetectable. As a virus, it might even be picked up by their technology. But, embedded, our equipment barely picked it up," another of the "doctors" commented.

"Now," Maril started, "I would like to tell you what the message from the perimeter camps says. Basically, it says that it has been found that the Order--a group of Tarellians bent on revenge for the many injustices done to their people after they escaped from their planet--has entered the situation. They took control of a passenger liner, and attempted to keep the Feynman away from the settlement. After everyone on the liner was anaesthatized, the Order kidnapped Ensign Krazny. Also, Lieutenant Jenn has been kidnapped."

Maril looked up. "It seems we have found our culprit."

She headed down the corridor with her men following her. "The shuttlebay is that way. I want half of you to go there and commandeer a shuttle. Your job is to get to main ship and inform them of our status. The rest of you, find a transporter, and head to the ring. I have something else I need to take care of."

She hoped that things on the ring were going better then they were here. As long as they kept Jenn in hiding, she should be able to pull this off. Though that Counselor would have to die. She waited until her men were well on their way and went to a wall panel. "Computer, Location of Lt. Krazney."

<Lt. Krazney is in Sickbay.>

She smiled and made her way toward Sickbay, moving confidently in her Starfleet uniform.

She was about to round the bend leading to sickbay when she saw two security guards standing in front of the doorway. Taking a deep breath she walked confidently up to them. "I'm here to see the Counselor. The Captain asked me to question him."

The security guards nodded and stepped aside. *This is too easy,* she thought growing more confident by the minute. There were two med techs inside not to far from the prone figure of Lt. Krazny. They looked at her and one said, "What can I do for you Lt.?"

"I'm here to question Lt. Krazny."

"He's still unconscious."

"Perhaps we should wake him."

Nurse Tamy came out of the Sickbay lab and looked at the Ops officer in surprise. "Krysa, I thought..." Then she froze and hit her comm pin, "Security to Sickbay, we have an intruder."

*Damn* the woman thought. As the two security guards rushed in she grabbed Tamy and pointed her phaser at the nurses head. "Back off! Away from the door!" she yelled.

The two security guards moved away from the door as she pulled Tamy toward it. As the door slid open she remembered what she had come to do. As long as her cover was blown anyway..... She aimed the phaser at Krazny and fired.

Nurse Tamy struck at just the right time and knocked the phaser out of her hand, sending the beam searing across the biobed Krazny was on, but missing hitting anyone. The Ops officer quickly headed out the open door running down the hall. She quickly ducked into a ventilation duct and crawled away. She had to come up with another plan.

USS FEYNMAN: Coming Up to Speed

by Kristen Gant 6-6-1996

Stardate: 80606.0020
Scene: The Ring
MD: 2.1300

*We’ll find you soon, Krysa, I promise.* * I know*

Krysa she smiled faintly in the dark room. She now knew for sure that Kavan was looking for her. Apparently Dr. Glin’karr had been helping him make several telepathic contacts with her, trying to zero in on where she was. She had confidence in the FEYNMAN crew and knew they wouldn’t let her down.

She was also beginning to feel a little better, leading her again to the conclusion that she had been drugged. So far no one had been in to check on her for several hours. She wondered if they ever would. Perhaps they were sure that there was no way for her to be found. It was still dark and while her eyes had adjusted to the darkness, she found the room to be empty other then the cot on which she was lying. There was no discernible door, only smooth walls.

She tired to be patient while she waited to be found. After she’d been laying there a short time, she heard a faint whine. She looked over toward the sound and saw a man standing there. “So you’ve come back to taunt me have you.”

“No just to give you this.” The man moved quickly and before she could react she heard the hypospray hiss and the already dark room went black.

Scene: Brig
MD: 2.1300

She found herself in the brig again. This time though she knew she couldn’t use Krysa’s identity to escape. Though she kept her eyes open for another chance. She knew somehow there would be a way out of here, if she kept her wits about her.

Some of her crew were being brought in a few at a time. She watched them with a glare, letting them know there would be hell to pay once she was free. *Bumbling idiots,* she thought, *why do I put up with them.*

She did notice that Gro’er and Tofte hadn’t been brought in. She was sure if anyone could get away it would be them. She also knew that they would be able to continue the mission even if she couldn’t. Not that she was out of the game yet. Not by a long shot.

Scene: The Ring
MD: 2. 1330

"But he's not Starfleet," Glin'kharr declared.

"That doesn't stop me from wanting to help," said Kavan with a grin. "I've already told the Captain my wishes; I'm still waiting for his answer." He watched as the Doctor turned around to look at him.

“Mr. Kavan, I can understand you wanting to help, but...”

“It’s just Kavan, Doctor, and I intend to help one way or another.”

“You’ve already been a big help.” He said simply.

“As long as Krysa needs help, I haven’t done enough.” The man’s mind was made up and there wasn’t much that could change that. “Besides I know if I get close enough, I will be able to contact her without your help. I’ve done it on the ship before.”

“How close?” Glin’karr asked.

Kavan shook his head. “I’m really not sure. We’ve never *tested* it.”

Glin’karr nodded. He worried about finding her soon. He’d made sure everyone had their booster shots of his inoculate by 1200 hours. But Krysa had missed hers. That worried him.

Regards,
Lt. Krysa Jenn

USS FEYNMAN: Post #14

"Status?" Zane asked as he entered the bridge.

"No change sir. Engineering is on the sensors but they aren't sure how long until they are up." Jerran replied rising from the captain's seat.

Zane wasn't too surprised. The damage hadn't been extensive but it had been well planned. Most of the systems needed to be replaced rather than a normal re-routing. He motioned Jerran to remain in the chair.

"How long do you estimate for the lifepods to reach the Ring?"

"About six hours sir. But engineering has said at least 10 to get the sensors back on line."

"The OLYMPIA?"

"She warped out of system about 25 minutes ago. Unless there are any problems she'll arrive at EPSILON on 80614."

"Well Mr. Jerran I don't want those lifepods to reach the Ring. I don't care if you have to have people with their nose's pressed against the glass in 10-Forward trying to spot them. Just make sure you do. I'll be in my ready-room."

____________
Scene: Ready-room

"Computer, coffee, black, hot."

A few sips of the coffee and he sat at the desk spinning the computer around to face him. "Computer open a secure channel to Dr. Glin'kharr on the Ring."

[Yes captain?]

"Any luck in your search yet doctor?"

[Some. Kavan and I have been slowly trying to narrow our search field but as I'm sure you can imagine it is very draining.]

"But you do sense her? She is alive?"

[Most definietly. We know she's out there we just don't know where yet. But we will. Soon.]

"Have you heard from Cmdr. Maril?"

[I checked in with a few hours ago. He has made a contact within the local population and feels he may have a lead on something. He is currently investigating it. I'm afraid that's all I know.]

"Very well. We have some business to attend to here." Zane said being deliberatly vague in case unwanted ears were listening in. "But we'll be within transporter range by 1400 hours. I'll be beaming down a larger security detachment as well as Ensign Serra. He has finished all he can do with the engineering projections and he is raring to go on the plague. He's pretty sure he'll have it figured out by tomorrow, latest."

The doctor's soft chuckle came across the comm-link. [Ah to be a fresh young ensign again.]

"Good luck doctor. FEYNMAN out." His coffee cup empty he returned it to the replicator for a refill. "Zane to sickbay."

[Sickbay here. What can I do for you Captain?]

"How's your patient coming along?" In all the excitement he had been unable to check on Krazny.

[Just fine sir. The effects of the stun have worn off and he's now enjoying a deep sleep. Shall I wake him for you?]

"No let him sleep. He deserves it."

For the one hundredth time Tofte cursed the FEYNMAN, Starfleet and the ancestors of all who belonged. But he would have his revenge soon he smiled confidently.

In a few hours he and his men would be safely aboard the cargo vessels heading for the Luddite's from their trading partners across the Ring. And then they would ram this starship and her devil-spawned crew and when it was destroyed they would carry the plague to the ends of the universe.

Well our two threads are almost caught up!

Bad News :(

Due to RL pressures Bill is no longer able to remain with us as Ensign Serra. He had hoped that his schedule would be lighter but as it has not become so he felt it unfair to remain. He has also offered up his character as sacrifice to the plague so as of now Serra is an NPC with a very short future <EG> Please remove Bill from your mailing lists.

Perhaps when this mission is over we should perform some sort of excorist to remove the FEYNMAN's curse of the CSciO!

Speaking of evil spirits, Jason, whats up with yours?

Bill: Sorry the timing didn't work out but when you do start another character in the ASR I hope we 'bump' into each other.

USS FEYNMAN: 17-Plague Time!

UY- Maril started to organize the new effort..

"Now, Science Team and the medical officers not involved in the 'doctors' office', I want you to to test every source of nourishment you can think of--anything. Other medical officers, continue to get samples and try to find some sort of counteragent to the virus. Security Team, continue with what you have been doing. I will be looking even more deeply into this mystery. Dismissed."

MD 4.1400
Fringe of settlement:Stio Abigacho's house

Maril was sitting next to Abigacho working on his computer, although it was hardly a computer by Maril's standards. He cringed at the lack of memory on it, and noticed that its system was composed of microchips, not isolinear ones. Add to this that the operator interface was a "keyboard" which you had to push down on to get anything to work.

However, Maril had found that Abigacho's skill on this computer, however backward that computer was, was something to be appreciated. Abigacho had already accessed the settlement's main computer and was attempting to get into the Spaceport Trade Center's database. There was a password, but this consisted of only a series of characters, not voice or retinal recognition. Abigacho had soon broken the password, and was inside.

"Hmmm...the dafala bread has been sold to the STC by the same firm for over 25 years--the Ababzi Grain Refinery."

'A few possibilities,' Maril thought. This company could have been embedding the virus all along. Highly unlikely, given the virus's mutation speed. The company could have changed leaders recently. Or, maybe it was embedded somewhere else along the line.'

Maril continued out loud. "See if you can find any other recent shipments that the STC has handled. I need to see if any other sources could have caused the situation," Maril said, trying to be a little vague, as he didn't want to tell Abigacho everything just yet.

Abigacho just nodded. "Okay, I'll look for that...."

MD 4.1430

"I think I've found a few things," Abigacho called out. "There was a shipment of rubber from Jababo Indergo. Also, some steel and iron from an unknown place. And I just found a shipment of sugar from a farm on a planet called Earth."

Maril just shook his head at the first two leads. No one would ever lick rubber or steel. But the sugar was a good possibility. He was just about to contact the Science Team when Abigacho reported, "Umm...I'm gonna have to pull out of here. They've discovered that someone's here. If I don't get out of here fast, they'll be able to trace it back to my terminal."

"That's fine. Pull out. Thank you again. I think I will return to my home now."

"Wait a second. There's a broadcast over the emergency announcement system. Look."

Maril did look. On the screen, he saw a tall, thin man, along with a shorter, more round one to the side.

"The thin one's the governor of the settlement," Abigacho stated. "The fatter one is the mayor of the city."

"Citizens of The Settlement," the governor began. "First, I do not want you to panic at what I am about to tell you. Everything is under control."

"Now, there is a rather pesky disease passing through The Settlement. There is nothing to worry about, but for safety reasons, we would like everyone to stay within the building you are in; or if you are outside, go to the nearest building. Our top doctors are on the case. The police will assist you."

The mayor continued the speech, "There is nothing to be afraid of, but this measure will ensure safety for all. Thank you."

The screen went black.

"Well, I guess you won't be going home after all," Abigacho half-smiled.

Captain Pentak looked down at the sensor screen and cursed at the two Starfleet pods slowly approaching his convoy. He knew who the occupants would be. Must be. And now was the time to decide. In a few minutes the FEYNMAN shuttle craft would locate the pods and retrieve the occupants of the pods who were surely allies of his secret benefactor. For him there would be questions. Still if he acted and was caught his punishment would be death. *But the money...* His mind wandered to his wife and children at home, safe in a house he would never have been able to afford.

Leaving the sensor screen to its operator he walked over to the main console and tapped a few commands into the keypad. His finger hesitated over the 'enter key' "All gods bear witness, I do this for my children." He whispered silently. The button was pushed.

"Captain!" The sensor operator screamed.

Dunnon looked down at his console as the shuttle spun around to head out to the Panarik convoy. He had to admit it had been an excellent ploy for them to head there rather than to the Ring as expected. But they'd never make it there now. It would take no more than a few seconds for his sensors to locate them now that they were oriented in the correct direction.

"What the Hell!" Quickly he raised shields and opened a channel to the ship. "Dunnon to FEYNMAN!"

[Ah Mr. Dunnon have you finished your joy-ride and located those pods yet?] Jerran asked.

"Sir one of the Panarik's uncrewed cargo haulers has just exploded! There is debris and radiation flooding this vicinity...sensors are virtually useless."

There was a silent pause over the channel. [Understood, continue on towards the convoy and see if you can be of assistance.]

Tofte covered his eyes as the hatch to his pod opened to reveal the bright lights of the cargo bay. As his eyes began to refocus he noticed a shadow hunched over him. Soon the nervous looking face became clear. "Captain Pentak! What a pleasant surprise!"

USS FEYNMAN: Buried Alive!

She watched the guards closely. They were making no mistakes that she could take advantage of so far. Her patience was beginning to run out. She had to get out of here. She hoped thier back up plan was working.

She was only partially surprised when the main panel in front of the guard began to spark and burn. She smiled lightly as she waited for Gro'er to make his entrance. No one knew how to cause sparks like Gro'er.

She was not disappointed when the man opened an wall panel behind her. He had found a way through the walls. "Block their view," she hissed quietly to her imprisoned crew.

While the guards were distracted dealing with the sparking and burning panel, she slid through the wall with the rest of her crew standing in the way. Then they quickly replace the wall panel.

"About time you showed up," she purred. He smiled and motioned for her to follow him.

He pointed to a blue glowing device, "We have to move quickly. I rigged it as quick as I could, it won't hold the field back long. If it come back on and we're to close, they'll know it right away." She nodded and they quickly crawled into one of the interior ducts.

After they had crawled a good distance away, he turned to her. "I got the signal." He held out a small device with a single read blinking light on it, smirking.

She broke into a broad smile, "When?"

"A couple of hours ago." he said tucking the device back into his tunic. "I've been working on a way to get you out of there, since then."

"So Tofte made it, and our friend came through for us."

Gro'er nodded, "If things go right for a change, the FEYNMAN should head toward the cargo ships and then we can be beamed directly off."

"Are you sure the FEYNMAN can't pick up that signal box you're holding there?"

"Not likely," he told her. "They'd have to really be looking hard for it."

Scene: The Ring
MD: 4. 1500

Couprie's team was gathered and searching a small area where the Feynman sensors said was the most likely spot for her to be from the data that Reetza had collected, but Kavan was shaking his head in frustration. "She's not responding."

Couprie looked at him. "Maybe were still to far away."

"We've been searching for over an hour. We're beginning to go in circles!" he sighed, "I should be able to hear her by now."

"You can still get a sense of her though, right." Kavan nodded, and Couprie clapped his shoulder, "Then we'll find her, don't get discouraged."

"Alright, I'll keep trying." he closed his eyes and concentrated again.

  • Krysa! Please answer me!*

"Sir, our tricorders are picking up some sort of bunker just over that direction." said one of the security officers, "It's about 10 feet underground."

"Well there has to be an entrance somewhere. Come on."

Kavan looked up and followed, calling Krysa again.

  • Whooooo...* came the foggy reply.

"Krysa!" Kavan was so happy, he realized he shouted out loud. He looked at Couprie, "She responded." Couprie smiled and continued in the direction of the underground bunker.

  • Krysa, we are really close. Are you alright?
  • Yes... I'm so tired."
  • Are you still alone*
  • I... I think so... someone was here... but gone now.*

"It's directly underneath us now, sir." said the security guard, stopping not to far from a small outcropping of rocks.

"See if you can find a way in," said the team leader, then he hit his comm pin "Couprie to Feynman."

<Zane here.>

"Commander, we have found a bunker that's about 10 feet underground. So far no visible signs of and entrance."

<Is Lt. Jenn in there.>

Couprie looked at Kavan who was on his hands and knees concentrating. "Kavan?"

The man looked up, and nodded, "I think so, she's kind of out of it. She's probably been drugged again."

"Sir, Kavan thinks so."

"Sir," said one of the security officers coming up behind Couprie, "We can't find any entrance. As far as we can tell it's intact. Though we are picking up some sort of an energy field... very faint. Possibly to prevent anyone they don't want getting in or out."

Regards,
Lt. Krysa Jenn

NRPG: I figure the terrorists think the FEYNMAN will want to go assist with the explosion... They don't know about the ships already there. So if the FEYNMAN doesn't go, they may be waiting a long while...

Hey Jason, what is our resident villain doing while these terrorists are crawling through his domain :) Maybe they can wake him up :)

Now that we know where Krysa is, perhaps someone on the Feynman can figure out a way to get her out... or wait and monitor her and see if we can figure out who has her... though I suspect it's someone with ties to the fake Krysa on board the Feynman :)

USS FEYNMAN: 21-FInding an Escape Route

by Max Felsher 6-9-1996

Stardate: 80609
UY-Though he probably shouldn't have been.

The Tarrelian plague had finally spread through the Neo-Luddite settlement. As he walked out of the room, he whispered through the subcutaneous communicator. "Security, is the Feynman over the settlement?"

[Yes, sir, it is.]

"Good. Alert the rest of the team that we will be running from the fire, by beamout if possible. Also tell this to the Feynman."

[But, sir, we can't beam back to the ship.]

"Yes, I know. However, we might be able to do a site-to-site transport through the Feynman. If that is not possible, the perimeter teams may be able to beam us out. If none of these work, we will have to force our way out. Make sure you tell all of this to the Feynman. And-"

"Mr. Maril," Abigacho yelled out, "what are you doing? Just sitting there?"

"Ah, yes, I'm just thinking...about what just happened," Maril yelled back. Again whispering, he then said, "And, Security, tell the Feynman and the perimeter teams that the beam out, if possible, should occur at 1600 hours. Also, tell the rest of the team to form our battle lines again approximately where we beamed in, 2 kilometers outside the eastern edge of the settlement."

[Alright, sir.]

"One more thing. If we beam out, take all of the equipment. If we fire the cannons instead, take as much equipment as you can easily take--and take all scans, memory, information acquired, etc. Destroy *everything* of ours that isn't taken with us. Is that understood?"

[Understood, sir.]

"Good. Maril out."

As Maril closed the comm link, he walked back into the room where Stio Abigacho was using the computer. "Mr. Abigacho-"

"Call me Stio."

"Very well. I suppose it is only fair you should call me Onta then. Stio, I will probably be leaving this area soon."

"But there's an order out that no one can go outside."

"I know, but I have to get out."

Abigacho sighed. "Look, Onta, stop playing games. I know who you are. I've known it for a while. You are a Starfleet officer, on the USS Feynman, if I'm not mistaken."

Maril tried to keep a calm exterior, but it obviously didn't work because the next thing Abigacho said was, "Don't look so surprised. I'm not a Neo-Luddite. I am Jabin Stor, Third Company, Cardassian Obsidian Order. Did you think that only the Federation knew about this possible epidemic?"

Maril sighed, as Abigacho had a few moments earlier. "Well, then, I will tell you the truth. My team is getting out of the settlement. We can't afford to stay any longer. We may be back, however."

Abigacho(or Stor) replied, "Well, I'm here on a long-term mission. It was actually a stroke of luck that alerted us to the epidemic. I was traveling around the Ring when I found some contamination. When I examined it further, I realized it was the Tarellian plague. I alerted my superiors, and stayed here instead of continuing on my trip. I've been here so long that, at least to a newcomer like you, I appear to be a native."

Maril then said, "Well, thank you for all your help. It was much appreciated."

"Well, it was to my advantage to help you as you could help stop the epidemic."

"Yes," Maril smiled. "However, there is another thing. We have found that a certain organization known as the Order--which is seeking revenge for the many injustices done to Tarellians who survived the plague and escaped to other planets--this Order is attempting to spread the plague. We have also found that the virus has been 'embedded' into certain foods. It is activated by saliva."

"I see. Very disturbing."

"Yes, and we believe that the Order 'embedded' the virus. My personal theory is that there is an agent in the settlement right now 'embedding' the virus in many places. It would be most helpful if he or she could be caught."

Stor smiled. "So you want me to catch this agent, and maybe 'dispose' of them somehow. Hmm...it's gonna be a lot harder, considering that I can't go outside. But I'll still be able to do it."

"Do the best you can."

"Don't worry about that," Stor replied.

The sun has met the sea,
Lt. Commander Onta Maril,
First Officer, USS Feynman,
aka Max Felsher

NRPG: Yes, I know, all dialogue and no action. Don't worry, though, there'll be some action. :)

As for the different ways of getting out of the settlement, I don't think much of the site- to-site through the Feynman. First of all, I'm not sure the Feynman has that sort of range on a site-to-site transport; and second, contamination might occur even if it is routed right back to the surface.

I don't know if there are any transporters with the perimeter teams. Might not be a bad idea to have some, though.

The third, "break-out" idea is pretty risky. We might lose a few officers/crew that way.

Anyway, someone should just make a reference to which one we're doing in a post.

Also, try to have the Feynman over the settlement for at least 1500-1600 hours so we don't have that Security guy saying the Feynman is overhead when it isn't.

USS FEYNMAN: Someone on This Ring Has to Die...

by Kristen Gant 6-11-1996

Stardate: 80611.2037
Scene: Somewhere on the Feynman
MD: 4.1500

Gro'er and his commanding officer crawled through the internal accesses of the Feynman. "Can you tell if we are near the transports yet?" she hissed.

"Doesn't look like, or this would be flashing much faster." He said looking at the device which still showed a slow steady flash.

"What's taking so long. Doesn't the Feynman believe in aiding a fellow ship?" she growled.

He shrugged. "I have an idea. Come on."

She followed him as he crawled to a ventilation duct and looked out into the room. It was someone's quarters, and deserted for the time being. He carefully removed the panel and slipped down into the room. "Stay there, I'm just going to check the computer console in here."

He moved over to the computer and began fishing through the various screens, looking for something to give him some information. After a couple of fruitless ventures he finally found what he was looking for. Smiling he moved back to the duct and pulled himself up. Then replaced the panel.

"The Feynman has moved to a spot over the ring. I couldn't tell which section, but I would presume it's our target settlement. So all we need to do is get to a transporter."

"You're going to beam down to the ring?" she asked, hesitantly.

"It's the only way to complete our mission. Remember, we promised to give our lives for the cause if need be."

She nodded, remembering her promise. She would do it for the Order. Then they headed out to find a transporter room.

Scene: Search for Krysa

"Sir, we have searched everywhere. It's a self contained box down there. No way in, no way out. We're going to have to find a way to break down the forcefield and beam her out... If she's in there." said Davidson.

Couprie nodded, but Kavan stood in anger, "She's in there! Just do what you have to and get her out!"

Couprie held out his hand, "They are." Kavan sat back down on the ground.

  • Krysa?*
  • uh hummmm.* came a tired reply.
  • They've got a way to get you out, so just be calm, okay?*
  • umm'kay.*

Davidson spoke again. "Reetza thinks that if we set up some sensor modulators and play with the frequencies a bit, we may be able to get a transporter beam through."

He nodded and hit his commpin, "Couprie to Feynman."

<Zane here.>

"We think we've got a way to get her out."

<Great, keep me informed.>

Reetza and Davidson quickly began to set up equipment as the others continued to monitor the buried bunker.

Scene: Transporter room
MD: 4.1530

Gro'er slipped out of the duct into the empty corridor, with his companion right behind him. They rushed into the transporter room and within seconds knocked the unsuspecting man out.

Gro'er smiled as he tinkered with the controls, "Just as I thought, right over the colony." He put in a few coordinates while she stepped up onto the transporter pad. "This should put us a short distance outside of the colony." he said finishing up and jumping onto the transporter pad as the beam grabbed them.

Scene: Bridge

"Sir, someone transporting down to the ring!" yelled Garrett, as she quickly began scanning the transporter room.

"Stop them," ordered Zane.

Garret's hands flew over the controls, but before long she was shaking her head. "I can't, sir. It's got some kind of a block on it." Whoever had rigged this was good. She traced the transporter beam to it's end, to see where they had transported to.

"Can you tell who it was?"

"No, sir, but there were two of them and they transported near the buried bunker." she told him. "I can't get an exact location."

"Zane to Couprie." Zane said hitting his commpin.

<Couprie here, sir.>

"Expect company, soon. Most likely Terrelians."

<Aye, sir.>

Scene: Bunker site

"Reetza, Davidson how're you coming?" Couprie asked after having spoken to the Captain.

"Just about ready for our fist attempt, sir."

Kavan mummered, "About time."

Couprie wisely decided to ignore his comment, focusing instead on what the rest of his team was doing. He had to remind himself that Kavan was not Starfleet.

"Sir," called Reetza, surprised. "I'm reading three lifesigns down there."

He turned and looked at her. "Can you tell which one is Lt. Jenn?"

"No, sir," she said shaking her head.

Kavan had jumped to alert when he heard she wasn't alone. *Krysa, who's with you?*

  • I... I see... two...*

"Can you beam all three up?" asked Couprie.

"No, only one at a time, this is only a portable transporter device. It's power is severely limited." said Reetza shaking her head.

"Then pick one and hope it's the right one. Phasers ready."

The transporters picked up a figure that materialized into Krysa. She seemed disoriented and the search party dropped their weapons and congratulated each other on having done it.

Kavan smiled happily and ran over sweeping her up into his arms. "Krysa!"

"I'm glad to see you too..." she said hesitantly.

  • Kavan*
  • What's the matter?* he asked pulling away from her. His eyes opened wide as

he realized the telepathic call wasn't coming from Krysa but still from the bunker, "What's going on?" he asked, backing away.

The woman standing before him sighed. "I swear I am never, ever trying to replace a telepathic species again." Then she took of for a dark group of trees at a full run.

Couprie quickly grabbed his phaser and stunned her, watching as she fell to the ground. "Try again," he said to Reetza. All were a little shaken by the deception.

This time when Krysa appeared again, they were a little less jubilant. Krysa herself seemed even more disoriented then the first. She looked around the crowd staring at her hesitantly, finally spotting who she was looking for, "Kavan..." she said as she fell to the ground.

Kavan ran to her immediately dropping to the ground and picking her up. The moment he touched her he knew it was her. He smiled and nodded to the others.

Suddenly three men ran out of the trees and began firing phasers at the group. One of the security officers dropped almost immediately. The other returned fire as the quickly jumped behind the outcropping of rock. Kavan dragging Krysa as best he could was also hit and collapsed on the ground.

The other officers made short work of the three attackers and moved quickly back to where thier fallen colleagues lay.

"He's dead," called Reetza as she stood over the fallen security officer.

Couprie stooped to where Kavan and Krysa lay. Quickly feeling for a pulse on the Ops officer first, he breathed a sigh of relief as Krysa moaned slightly and he felt a strong pulse.

He looked over at Davidson, who was checking on Kavan. The man shook his head, his face stony. Couprie looked back at Krysa wondering how he was going to break this to her.

He hit his commpin to make his report to the Captain.

Regards,
Lt. Krysa Jenn

NRPG: Now really, don't tell me you are surprised <VBG> Most of you probably knew this was going to happen sooner or later... I've been trying for a nice valiant death for Kavan since he boarded the Feynman <G> I imagine the search party will carry Krysa back to the perimeter camp and put her in the med tent or whatever their using.

I also think I've established that the Feynman is over the settlement at 1500, now lets see if everyone keeps with me <EG>

Andy, sorry, about allowing the bad guys to get away... but they can never catch the transporter in time on the series either <G> Besides I needed them on the ring <EvilG> BTW, since I'd never given the look-a-like a name I decided not to. She was only stunned, so could still be alive causing problems on the ring if we want. Or we could have a security team grabbed them up and keep them tied up for a while... though I don't know where we would keep them at the camp.

USS FEYNMAN: Another Notch

by Andrew Catterick 6-11-1996

SD: 80611.0900
MD: 4.1245
Scene: Ready-Room
Post #23

Before leaving his ready-room Zane put in a quick call to Sr'qwon. "Status on the prisoners Lieutenant?"

[We've recaptured all of the terrorists that initial beamed aboard except for four. We're assuming that these four were the ones that escaped in the pods however we are keeping up the search and increased alert condition until we're assured either way. They're a tough bunch. No one surrendered so we had to heavy stun them all. They'll be waking-up with a hell of a hang-over.]

"And the one disguised as Lt. Jenn?"

[We're assuming she is one of the ones that escaped in the pods sir.]

"I see. Very well. When they come to begin debriefing them I want to know everything we can about them. And keep in mind we may have another potential hostage situation brewing." Zane quickly filled him on the circumstances surrounding the convoy.

[I really don't like the sounds of this Captain. That explosion was exactly what they needed at exactly the right time. I'm not one for coincidences.]

"Agreed. Proceed with the briefing. And Lieutenant?"

[Sir?]

"I'll expect a full report as to how there were two security breaches in less than a day and what steps have been taken to prevent a future occurrence."

[Aye sir.]

Entering the bridge he looked over to Jerran. "Recommendations?"

"Until the sensors our back on line, which Lt. Koreth has assured me will be with in the hour, we are relying on the eyes of the SKYWALKER. She's picked up a few items of note but I'd feel much more confident once we can get a look ourselves."

"It is a little strange that they refused any assistance, especially if they've got nothing to hide."

"Sir, the Admiral was quite clear that this was an Emergency One mission. If need be we can board those vessels, or at the very least order them to return to port."

Zane rubbed his palm along his chin. "That's something I'd like to keep as a last resort. For now I want you to park us 5000m over the Ring between it and them and lets see what they do." He turned to the security officer. "Open a channel to Dr. Glin'kharr's team."

"Channel open."

"FEYNMAN to Dr.Glin'kharr."

[Glin'kharr here. What can I do for you sir?]

"I've some good news and some bad news."

[I'm sure we could all use a little good news sir.]

"You medical and science teams may be able to return to the ship to use the labs."

There was a long pause. [That would mean...] Quickly Zane filled him in on the discovery of the dead terrorist.

[Has there been any confirmation yet?]

"No but they covered a large part of the ship and if one of them had it chances are they all did." He changed the subject. "Any luck with Lt. Jenn?"

[I'm afraid there is nothing new all though we have every reason to believe Kavan will pinpoint her soon.]

"Good. Keep me informed. FEYNMAN out."

Jerran turned his head to face the captain. "If those terrorists did make it on to that cargo hauler and we don't find a cure...."

"Then we'll have to 'sterilize' them as well." Zane answered grimly.

USS FEYNMAN: 24 - Hostages?

by Joseph Baker 6-12-1996

SD: 80612.1827 (GMT)
MD: 4.1545

Needless to say, this was not looking to be a very good day at all for the Captain and crew of the USS FEYNMAN. CMDR Zane paced back and forth in front of the command arena on the bridge of the FEYNMAN as LTJG Jerran listened to a report over the comlink from WO Dunnon. First, the prisoners from the Order had escaped, and now one of them was apparently holding the crew of the Panarik freighter convoy hostage while other groups had just killed not only a couple of the FEYNMAN's own security guards, but also a civilian, something which, as Captain of a Federation starship, Zane felt completely responsible for. And not just any civilian, either, but the husband of his own OPS officer.

<They haven't changed course an inch, sir>, Zane heard WO Dunnon say over the link to Jerran's console.

Jerran nodded from the helm and said, "Yes, that is indeed quite strange, and they haven't even bothered to send out any sort of terrorist demands. Have they detected you or the fighters, Dunnon?"

<Not yet, sir. Their fission drives give off so much radioactives that they've got a pretty decent blind spot directly to their aft. With the metaphasic shields on the shuttle and fighters, I'd say we can stay here at least another six hours before we'd have to have a stay in Dr. Tox... errr... Dr. Glin'kharr's radiation detox chamber.>

Jerran smiled slightly and said, "Alright. Keep yourselves nice and quiet there, and we'll get back to you as soon as we find anything out. FEYNMAN out."

The pilot turned to the Captain, who was already standing behind him and looking over his shoulder and was about to convey the report from WO Dunnon when the Captain just nodded and said, "I heard, Mr. Jerran. It does sound odd indeed. No demands, no change of flightplan. It's almost as if the Panarik freighters were expecting company. Garrett, hail the lead freighter. I want to talk to Pentak."

"Channel open, sir."

"Panarik Freighter, this is the USS FEYNMAN, CMDR Zane speaking."

Captain Pentak's smilingly cordial face came on the screen and said, <Greetings, Commander. What can we do for you?>

"I was just about to ask you a similar question, Captain. We have heard... reports that there are some terrorists in the area who might have been able to infiltrate your cargo ships. If there are any on board your ship, we would like to talk to them so that we may avoid any further bloodshed."

The Panarik captain's smile faided as a more nervous look crept in, <I... uh... don't know what you're... uhhh... talking about, Commander. I assure you that there are no... uhh... terrorists on this ship. Besides, what would the terrorists gain by stealing a group of worthless, outdated freighters carrying cargo that would only be fit for use by one group of people?>

"My crew and I were wondering the same thing. The truth is, sir, that we think that the terrorists are at this point, merely desperate for escape, in any form, even if it means using a group of outdated freighters, just as long as they make it to the ring. They already tried to escape to the ring on a pair of our lifeboats. One of them was captured, while the other is still missing. It couldn't have gotten far in the short time that it has been gone, and your freighters are the closest place for them to go."

A slight smile crept back to Pentak's face as he said, a bit less nervously, <My crew and I will endevour to make sure that this convoy is devoid of terrorists, Commander, and if we do find any, I'm sure that you will be the first to know, as the humans say.>

"Thank you for your cooperation in this manner, then, Captain Pentak. FEYNMAN out." Just as the screen returned to the view of the ring, Zane turned to the other officers on the bridge and said, "Impressions?"

Jerran raised an eyebrow as he glanced at one of the nav scanner displays on his console and said, "It doesn't take an empath to see that he's most definitely hiding something, sir. It wouldn't be too much of a leap of logic to suggest that Pentak is in fact hiding the Order terrorists."

Zane nodded as he went back to his seat, scratching his chin thoughtfully, "I agree, Lieutenant. Now we just need to find a way to prove it. Those fission drives that Dunnon mentioned, do you think they could pose a potential hazard to the crew?"

"Possibly, sir. Fission drives fell out of disuse a couple of centuries ago in most more advanced races just because they were so dangerous to maintain and the fact that they posed such problems as heat and the deadly raidation trail that theu leave in their wake. Only a few races are known to use them now, those who can't afford to use much else. Even the Bajora haven't used them since the war with the Cardassians ended 40 years ago."

"Dangerous enough to warrant the use of Regulation 13d?"

"Any civilian or military vessel within Federation space is subject to mandatory health and safety inspections whenever docking at a Federation aligned facility or whenever any officer of command grade on a Federation starship has sufficient cause to suspect hazardous materials or conditions on board said vessel," the FCO diligently quoted.

Zane smiled at his pilot's memory for regulations and said, "That's the one, Lieutenant. I want you, Koreth, Cartwright, and a few security officers to go over there on the NOGURA to conduct this `inspection'. I want the security officers to have only type one phasers, and they should also carry engineering field packs so they don't look like security guards," the commander said, thinking of what a good thing it was that both engineering and security wore the same colors.

"Aye, aye, sir," Jerran said as he got up from his console to go to the shuttlebay.

<NRPG> That's the good thing about playing Star Trek over the net rather than making an episode of it on TV. You can use the shuttles whenever you want because you don't have to worry about going over the special effects budget on this episode ;)

USS FEYNMAN: 25-Escape

by Max Felsher 6-13-1996

SD 80613.1200(GMT)
MD 4.1555
EI Ring: N-L Settlement: Fringe: Stio Abigacho's house

Maril waited for a reply from the Feynman on the matter of getting out of the settlement. It hadn't been too long, but in the position of Chirano locked in, the wait was driving him insane.

He had the plan all ready in his mind. The equipment and records would have to go first. Although some might have thought that cruel, Maril explained to himself that people could move--objects could not. It would only take a few trips if the Feynman could be used. Of course, it would take longer if they had to use a portable transporter, but it wouldn't take so long as to bore Shirad.

The riskiest, and the one with the highest probability of bloodeshed, was trying to escape from the settlement by actually running. Maril hesitated to use this one, as it would not only force them to destroy some of their equipment, it was alos quite probable that a good number of the team would be injured or killed.

[Security to Maril,] the FO was interrupted from his thoughts.

"Maril here."

[Sir, it has been determined that the virus might spread even through a site-to- site transport, so we can't use that.]

"Can we beam into the perimeter camp directly?"

[Yes, but the transporter has limited power and range. It can only beam up one person at a time, or an equivalent mass of equipment. It also can only reach about to the western edge of the settlement.]

"Hmmm...the range shouldn't be a problem, since I don't think anyone has left the settlement. If anyone has, they're relatively safe from the Neo-Luddites, though I don't know about anything else. The power is disturbing. What is the estimate on the number of beam-ups?"

[Approximately eighteen, sir.]

"Eighteen!"

[Yes, sir, eighteen.]

"Well, get the medical and scientific records out first, then the medical equipment, then the science officers, the medical officers after that, one of you security officers next, myself, the other one of you two, and, lastly, the communications equipment. Can you remember all that?" Maril smiled.

[Yes, sir, I'll remember. Security out.]

Maril returned to the room where Stor(Abigacho) was still working on his computer, although Maril now knew that it was hardly a computer by Stor's standards either.

"Well, Stor, I'm leaving soon."

The "Neo-Luddite" turned around. "You are?" He cleared his throat and stood up. "Well, it was nice working with you, Onta."

Stor grasped Maril's hand with the tight grip of a Cardassian. They shook hands, staying rather quiet. Maril still couldn't move his fingers after Stor let go, but he said goodbye and waited for the Security Team to report back in.

A few minutes later, they did. [Security to Maril.]

"Maril here."

[The transporter is set up, and we're ready to proceed.]

"Do so."

[Aye, sir.]

"Keep me constantly updated."

[Aye, sir. Security out.]

Security did report in, several times, notifying Maril when the records, the medical equipment, the medical and science officers, and one of the security officershad successfully beamed over to the perimeter camp.

[Alright, sir, it's your turn.]

"I'm ready. Proceed."

For the seemingly millionth time in his life, Maril felt the transporter beam shimmer around him, transporting him to the seemingly millionth place. For a second, it almost looked as if he was beaming into a dark room with a male Tarellian bending over him. However, that image was soon replaced by that of the perimeter camp. Maril breathed a sigh of relief.

"What happened?" Maril asked.

"Another power source attempted to reroute the beam to another location," a science officer (from the perimeter team) replied. "We were able to rematerialize you, but it used so much power that the transporter, in a sense, 'burned out'."

"Hmmm. Well, we still have one officer and the communications equipment in the settlement. Notify him that he may have to wait a while."

"Wait a second!" a medical officer(also from the perimeter team) cried out. "Aren't they using a transporter in the attempt to beam Lieutenant Jenn out? We could use that one as soon as they're done with it."

Maril thought for a second, then said, "Very well. Send someone down to get that transporter. However, if they are still using it, let them. Retrieving Lieutenant Jenn is a higher priority."

Not too much time later, everyone was probably relieved to see the last officer and the communications equipment beamed into the camp.

The sun has met the sea,
Lt. Commander Onta Maril,
First Officer, USS Feynman,
aka Max Felsher

NRPG: Well, now no one's in the settlement. We're all together. :)

Kristen: Why did you want Kavan dead? Perhaps there's a conspiracy involved, maybe even the Betazoid Mafia! Or maybe it was convenient to stage an "accident". <VBG>

All: Hey, why are you guys slowing down? We've got a disease to cure, Tarellians to capture. :)

USS FEYNMAN: "Iganth's River Goes on Without...

Scene: Search team
MD: 4.1600

The security guards in the search team had gathered up the three attackers. They were dismayed to find that the Krysa look-a-like had disappeared. She must have come out of the stun while they were being attacked by the other three. They also discovered that the third person from the bunker was no longer there either.

“Just keep your eyes open just in case someone decides to ambush us again,” Couprie told them. He moved over to where Krysa lay on a gurney still unconscious. The medical member of the team said that she was fine, just still under the influence of drugs.

They moved quickly back to the perimeter camp. Thankfully the rest of the trip was uneventful and soon they had the three attackers in a make shift prison tent penned in with a security field. Couprie went with the gurney to make sure that Krysa was taken care of as he hadn’t yet spotted the Doctor.

He was surprised to see Glin’karr on a makeshift biobed himself. Commander Maril saw them bring Krysa in and headed over to Couprie. “Report,” he ordered.

Couprie looked at the Lt. lying on the gurney and pulled Maril a short distance away. “We were attacked just after we located Lt. Jenn. Kavan and PO Grant were killed in the attack.” He motioned at Krysa, “She doesn’t know yet.” Then he continued with his report, “We managed to contain the three attackers, but there were two people in the underground bunker with Lt. Jenn. One was a look-a-like. They both got away.”

Maril nodded and moved over to stand by Krysa. Couprie sighed in relief that he wasn’t going to have to be the one to break the news to her, and hurried out of the medical tent. Maril was none to pleased to have the responsibility fall on his shoulder either. T’Del had left the sleeping Glin’karr to run her scans on the unconscious Ops Officer.

“When will she wake?” Maril asked.

“Not for a little bit. Not only is she drugged, she is totally exhausted.” answered T’Del. “I think the telepathic contact that she was put through was a little much for her. It’s strained her synapses.”

Maril nodded, “Call me when she wakes...” he paused, “I will tell her.”

T’Del nodded. Maril knew that T’Del probably wouldn’t have a difficult time telling the woman, but he knew that T’Del being Vulcan was not the best person to break the news.

He was about to leave when Ens. Jakko Serra stumbled into the tent. “Doctor... Doctor...” he mumbled.

T’Del moved over and caught the man before he fell face first into a examination table. Maril hurried to help her maneuver the delirious man onto a bed. “What’s wrong with him?” asked Maril.

T’Del ignored the XO’s question until she had finished a few scans. “It’s the plague.” she said simply.

“The Tarrellian plague,” asked Maril a bit stunned by the woman’s unemotionally delivery of the news.

“Yes, Commander,” she said, “The Tarrellian plague.”

“Is he the first of our people to get it?”

“Yes.”

Just then he heard a quiet moan come from Krysa’s direction. He looked at T’Del, “I thought you said it would be awhile.”

“I was wrong.” she said.

Maril almost growled at her, but instead moved quickly to stand by his fellow officer.

*Kavan?* she thought. Why wasn’t he answering? She was rescued wasn’t she? Perhaps it was all a hallucination from the drugs. She fought to open her eyes. She had to see where she was.

She opened her eyes, blinking them rapidly. While the tent wasn’t extremely bright, it was brighter then where she had been up until recently. As her eyes became adjusted to the light she saw Onta standing over her. Also the Vulcan doctor... T’Del. But where was Kavan?

“Kavan?” she asked trying to shake the fog from her head.

“Krysa? Can you hear me?” Maril asked, listening to her slurred call.

She nodded, “Where... Where...” she murmured trying to get her tongue to work though if felt much to large for her mouth. She was trying to shake the effects of the drug with limited success.

“Can you wake her a little more?” Maril asked T’Del.

The woman nodded and picked up her hypospray, “Though she really should sleep rather then subjected to questioning.”

“Just do it,” order Maril. He wanted her to be lucid when he told her.

Krysa listened to the exchange going on over her. She watched as T’Del came at her with a hypospray. Within a few seconds she felt her head clear a bit. She didn’t feel normal, but she did feel better.

“Krysa?” Onta asked again.

“I’m ... alright. That... helped.” she said. “Where... Where is Kavan?”

Onta looked up at T’Del briefly before taking a deep breath and answering her question. “Kavan...” He paused, and sadly said, “Touth dug a stream off the river.”

Krysa looked at him confused. So he continued, “Iganth’s river flows without Touth.”

Krysa’s face froze, as Maril’s metaphors began to sink in. She looked at T’Del, who said nothing. So she looked back at the XO, “Onta?” she said, wanting him to add a more positive Tamerian metaphor.

But Onta shook his head, “I’m sorry, Krysa.”

‘Without Touth’, ‘Without Touth’, his words echoed in her head, and she felt her body go numb with a feeling much worse then the drug she had been given. *Kavan?* she called out in her thoughts. ‘Without Touth’....

  • Kavan?*.... ‘Without Touth’... ‘Without.... *Kavan!!*....

Her mind swirled and she couldn’t stop it. She was dizzy, as her head filled with echoes and empty, unanswered calls. Eventually, it all when black... a quiet comforting silence.

Maril watched as Krysa’s eyes closed. He looked frantically at T’Del. But the woman answered calmly. “She’s passed out. She needs the sleep. I’m going to sedate her now.”

Onta nodded quietly. He had things he needed to do as well. Taking one last look at Krysa, he brushed back a loose strand of her tangled black hair. “It’ll be alright, Krysa. You are not alone.”

Regards,
Lt. Krysa Jenn

NRPG: Max, hope I didn’t go to out of character for Onta. I don’t think I did, but you never know :)

Well, now she knows, <Sigh>

We also now have 3 prisoners in the perimeter camp and one very sick NPC CSciO :) Have fun :):)

As Maril sat down in a chair, he touched the communications console on the nearby table. "Maril to Commander Zane," he started.

Soon, the Captain's face appeared on the same console. [What's the matter, Commander?] he asked.

"Just the spy returning to the headquarters."

[What do you have to report?]

"Lieutenant Jenn is still resting after I told her the news that Kavan has died, although she would be the mountain in the storm if she is not affected by that."

[Or perhaps a Vulcan,] Zane smiled.

Maril laughed at the joke, then continued. "Lieutenant Glin'kharr is ill for unknown reasons. He claimed, while he was in a fever state, that the Ring is trying to change his species somehow. After that, he became more delirious, however. T'Del is looking into it."

[Hmm.... Rather strange. Well, continue.]

"Ensign Serra has contracted the Plague, and-"

[Serra has gotten the Plague! Great! My 2O, my CMO, and CSciO, all sick or injured. If you hadn't escaped from the settlement, there might not be a functioning senior officer down there!] Zane took a deep breath. [Anything else, Commander?]

"Well, it doesn't look good for Serra. If we don't find a cure, he may die. Also, now that the virus has found a way around the vaccine, it may start to spread more quickly."

The Captain did not look happy.

"However, I do have some good news. All of the settlement team escaped, and we were also able to bring all of our equipment and the records and information. So, all of the information gathered in the settlement is now available."

[Well, we believe that operatives of the Order have escaped onto a convoy of Panarik freighters. Accordingly, Lieutenant Jerran and a group of officers have set out on a health and safety examination of the freighters. Hopefully, we will find the fugitives.]

Maril looked thoughtful for a second, and then replied. "We should make sure we are not fighting the river and the army at the same time. I think we should have a conference of all available officers at...2000 hours?"

[Very well. Everyone up here except for Jerran can be in the conference. What about down there?]

"I'm not sure. Possibly Jenn, but I don't think either Glin'kharr or Serra will be able to attend."

[Well, we'll do what we can. Zane out.]

The screen on the console faded to black. Maril sighed. Was it possible to defeat this virus which could mutate so quickly?

The sun has met the sea,
Lt. Commander Onta Maril,
First Officer, USS Feynman,
aka Max Felsher

NRPG: Well, I'm just throwing these ideas around. We'll see who can get to the conference. :) I guess it will be a holo-conference so that we don't risk spread of the virus. I've got a few ideas on how to defeat this Plague. Hopefully, I'm not the only one. ;)

"I'm afraid we didn't learn anything we didn't already know sir." The CSO looked completely haggard. It had been a long 24 hours and Zane suspected she had had little sleep during that time with everything that had happened. "It seems the leaders are the ones who escaped the ship, all we have down there are the followers. Fanatics mostly, they really don't know any more than what they have been told. And they are all quite willing to die, I think they look forward to it."

"But why the Ring? And why the Luddites?"

"I've been thinking about that myself. The only reason seems to be that they have relatively easy access to 70 billion people. Imagine if the plague took hold how it spread. First within the Ring and throughout the quadrant. Epsilon is fairly populated and the Kzin are pretty much next door. As for praying on a bunch of farming Luddites I..."

Zane snapped his fingers. "That's it! The Luddites keep to themselves but do trade with other communities around the Ring. They give them food in return for finished good. By passing along the virus to them you virtually guarantee the plague will take hold."

"Being a terrorist is bad enough but to do such a thing." Sr'qwon said with disgust.

"And they all have the plague." It was a statement rather than a question.

"Yes sir. A few of them don't look like they have much longer. The science and medical staff are examining them right now."

"It would be safe to assume that there are bugs floating all over this ship." He smiled grimly. "It would be quite ironic if we managed to discover a cure for this thing by examining those that would spread it. Very well Lieutenant, thank you. We're having a holo-conference at 20:00. Why don't you get some rest until then."

"Yes sir." Sr'qwon turned to go but hesitated. "Captain I heard a rumour floating around. Is it true that Kavan was killed. Is it true?"

"Yes."

The CSO just nodded sadly and left.

Timeframe: 30 minutes later

"Are you sure there are no life signs anywhere on the lead ship?"

[Affirmative. We've sweeped it entirely.]

"Good. And the remaining cargo carriers?"

[Our sensors say they are just drones pulled along by the lead ship. I don't think they were made to carry people.]

"Have you and your team cleared the area of the command ship?"

[Yes sir. We're already.]

"Lock torpedoes on the command ship."

"Torpedoes locked sir." The officer at tactical replied.

"Fire!"

"Torpedoes away!" The familiar twang of the torpedo launcher reverberated through the ship as the five torpedoes leaped from the ship. They continued in a straight line for several second before sliding into a star formation and impacted the ship simultaneously. A brief flash of light and the ship was gone along with the disease it carried."

"Open a channel to the Panarik community." Being isolationist it took several minutes for the Panarik to respond to the FEYNMAN's repeated hails. Zane smiled as he considered the mayhem he must have triggered. Residents of the Ring didn't usually receive calls out of the blue."

"Channel open sir. You will be speaking to a Principal Kobar."

The viewscreen flickered and the face of an elderly woman appeared on the screen. "Yes?" She asked clearly nervous.

"Greetings Principal Kobar. I am Commander Zane of the Starship FEYNMAN representing the United Federation of Planets. I realize this communication is somewhat unorthodox but I'm afraid I have some terrible news for you."

"What type of terrible news?" She asked warily.

"We were exploring another section of the Ring when our sensors picked up an explosion near your section of the Ring. Upon investigation we determined that one of your cargo carriers was destroyed. Debris from the explosion ripped into the lead ship and penetrated its nuclear engine core. The resulting radiation melted most of the ship and killed everyone aboard."

Kobar was stunned by the story. "That...that was our entire years production we were to trade it for food. Where are our 6 other container ships?" She asked suspiciously not trusting this outsider and is fake smile.

"They are safely drifting in space. One of our small crafts will gather them and return them to your spaceport."

"But what about our trade. Without the Luddite grain we will starve?"

"If you would allow me to I can request my government deliver you food supplies and anything else you need. Perhaps we could arrange the long-term loan of a tug to aid in your convoys." He let the offer dangle.

Kobar hesitated, torn between the fear of outsiders and the spectre of starvation. "We don't want any outsiders!" She protested weakly knowing they would need the food. "When would these supplies arrive?"

"12 days at the most."

"Any then you would go away and leave us."

"That is our way. We only want to help."

"And the price?" She asked not wanting to know.

"There is no price." He smiled. "As I said we are here to help."

"Very well. I accept these supplies and offer our thanks." What have I done she thought.

"Excellent. Expect your cargo containers within the day and a relief ship within 12 days. FEYNMAN out." As he sat back in his chair he let out a sigh a feeling of guilt running through him for having lied to Kobar. Still, it had to be done. Word of the plague could not get out.
