> "This is Commander Zane, captain of the USS FEYNMAN," the CO said calmly.<br>
> "Might we inquire as to your intentions in this star system?"<br>
><br>
> The facial expression of the Cardassian who appeared on the<br>
>viewscreen reminded Jerran of a lematya that was about to pounce on a<br>
>defenseless selyat cub. "I am Gul Katane of the Fifth Order. We both<br>
>know what we are here for, so I suggest that you keep out of our way, or<br>
>you might find yourself accidentally sitting in the path of a stray<br>
>quantum torpedo..."<br>
Zane stood and moved closer to the viewscreen. "You'll find that
I do not respond well to threats Gul Katane."
[Perhaps, but I really fail to see what harm your *ship* could
possibly do to the two warships I command. I suggest you consider my
*advice* very carefully. I will not issue it again.]
"And I suggest you consider the fact that we are much closer to
home than you are as well as the fact that as soon as our sensors showed
you approaching we alerted the two starships patrolling this sector." He
bluffed. "And rest assured that in any hostilities that may occur you
will find us formidable opponents."
Katane stared across the viewscreen at Zane for a few moments
before his face broke out into a sly grin. [And now that we have indulged
our egos in the requisite posturing and saber rattling I suggest we get
down to business.]
Zane was a little taken aback, although even with the little
experience he had dealing with Cardassians he knew they were unpredictable
as the smiling Katane and just proven. "Which is?"
[Why the cure to the Tarellian Plague of course.]
"The plague?" Zane asked innocently more to buy time to further
appraise Katane then to fool him.
The Cardassian laughed. [Come now Commander! That not only
insults my intelligence but yours as well. Of course our operative in the
Luddite community has informed us of the plague and even if he hadn't
Federation security really isn't what it used to be.] Another smug
Cardassian smile. [There is little time left so I suggest we get to the
heart of the matter. You are on the verge of a cure and we have been
dispatched to aid you in finding it.]
"That seems very...generous for the Cardassian government but why
would we want your help. If we are close to a cure why would we want or
even need your help?"
Katane sighed. [I had hoped you would be more reasonable
Commander. Let me be clear. For us to allow the Federation to be the
sole keeper of the cure to the most vile disease in history would be
criminal. Therefore to protect the balance of power that already exists
between our two governments we *will* give our help. If you do not accept
it is tantamount to a declaration of war. Come now Commander where is
this spirit of goodwill and cooperation your diplomats are always
preaching. I am offering assistance nothing more. But I will accept
nothing less.]
Zane considered the Gul's words. He was confident that they would
develop the cure soon but with Cardassian help the process could be
conceivably sped up saving countless lives. And perhaps of greater
concern, Katane was entirely correct. For one government to control the
cure was inherently dangerous. Of course the Federation would not keep it
a secret and would undoubtedly share it with the other powers, he thought.
So why not now? He made his decision. Turning to face the security
station he was unsurprised to see that Sr'qwon and Koreth had come to the
bridge as soon as they had been notified of the warships. "Mr. Sr'qwon
access the medical databases and send all the information we have on the
plague to the lead vessel."
"But Captain..." A raised eyebrow from Zane was enough to let her
no there would be no discussion. "Aye sir, transmitting now."
[Thank-you Commander. Please prepare to receive our medical
files. Do we have permission to transport down to your medical sites
to further aid in the investigation?]
"Granted. Give me 10 minutes to brief them of your arrival. My
executive officer, Commander Onta Maril, will be in command of the
compound, including your officers."
Katane looked like he would argue the point but then decided to
concede the matter. [Agreed.]
<<<NRPG>>>
Max: Incoming! Play nice.
All: Bad news. Unfortunately, I received an NRPG from Andrew N this
morning. RL pressures are high and he will not be able to retain his
position aboard the FEYNMAN. As of now the CSO is a NPC position and
please remove Andrew from your mailing lists.....
Andrew: Good luck with school and I hope that when the time constraints
lessen you are able to return.
Respectfully,<br>
Andy<br>
