SCENE: Holodeck ballgame<br>
> Ignoring the sudden hoots and calls from the crowd, Glin'kharr strode<br>
> forward. He only glimpsed at Zane as the Captain began yelling at him.<br>
> "Doctor, what are you doing? You're supposed to... Lieutenant, CEASE AND<br>
> DESI..."<br> | |||
><br> | |||
> Glin'kharr punched the target _hard_, contacting the plank with nothing<br>
> more than the ball. The Captain's words ended in a splash, and<br>
> Glin'kharr ducked as water sprayed around him. Amidst the cheers of the<br>
> crowd, Glin'kharr casually tossed the last ball into the air, and headed<br>
> back towards the barbecue...<br>
J.C. and Alex cheered the Doctor on as he walked by them enroute to get
a few more tasty ribs, "Way to go, Sir" said CPO Tamarov. J.C. turned
and held his arm up high to give the Doctor a 'high-five'. "Good shot,
Doctor!". Glin'kharr stopped, looked at the CSO, and raised the opposite
paw in the same manner, unfamiliar with the strange type of salute.
"No, like this Sir," J.C. lightly 'high-fived' his hand into the Doctors
large paw, overlooking Alex snickering slightly. The others giggled.
"This is all in fun, gentlemen." said the Doctor. "Relaxation can be the
best medicine at times." He pushed the glasses back into place, and went
after more ribs. By now Captain Zane had regained his 'seat' in the
reset tank, mumbling something about a dog pound. J.C. bent down to
scoop up three balls. Turning to Alex with a sinister grin, "well, Mr.
Tamarov. Who is going to represent Security in this little exercise,"
asked the CSO. He threw a ball up slightly and caught it. "You or me?"
Alex took a few cautious steps backwards, "After you, Sir. My evaluation
is still in the works, I wouldn't want it to get, er, all wet."
"O.K., I'll go for it.", said J.C. He walked to the line facing the
tank. The officers and crew shouted cheers, more from the junior
officers than the seasoned people. He noticed Mr. Maril shaking his
head, and Bat shouting very loudly, "Go get one for Security, Justin.",
Chef Bat winked at the CSO. He set down two of the tree balls, and then
caught Zane's eyes looking at him.
"So, _Lieutenant JUNIOR GRADE_, how is the armory inventory coming
along...", the crowd booed, but stopped quickly. J.C. winced for a
second, then eyed the center of the target. He stared a hole into the
bullseye for about five seconds, blocking out the noise of the crown,
focusing on the target. Take a deep breath, again, the wind up, and
pitched the ball as hard as he could... but the shot bounced off the top
the tank, missing the target by just inches...
Zane taunted the CSO, "Mr. Allard, you're a Starfleet Officer. You
should throw better than a Cadet." Apparently numb to the effects of the
tank by now, the Captain was starting to enjoy himself, perhaps too
much. The crowd laughed in fun at the remark. Picking up another ball,
J.C. was even more determined. His shoulder was a bit sore, that last
pitch was harder that he thought. He heard Kyrsa shout, "Come on Allard,
sink him." Maril looked up at some unknown spot in the sky, and Zane
stared daggers the OPS officer.
J.C. nodded to the crowd, and bent down to get the third ball. With both
in hand, he quickly took aim for the target, lined it up, wound up and
... | |||
"Lieutenant! What are...." wham! wham! Both balls hit the mark
milliseconds apart, with the delightful splash as their Commander took
yet another swim. J.C. jumped up, yelling an excited "All RIGHT!". Alex
patted him on the back, as the others cheered. They headed for some of
Bats' gourmet ribs. | |||

Game: | |||
> "I thought that's what the pitcher was supposed to do, sir. Throw the<br>
> ball so the batter can hit it."<br>
><br> | |||
> Maril chuckled and said, "Kitano at Milagra, LT. You're supposed to throw<br>
> it so they don't hit it."<br>
><br> | |||
> "Oh, that makes sense now, sir. I will endeavor to make sure that no one<br>
> hits the ball again," Jerran said. He then smiled to Krysa as she<br>
> crossed home plate again and said, "Consider that giving you a head start."<br>
J.C. took the wooden bat, hit the bottom of his sneaker to knock
some invisible dust off, and stepped up to the plate where Bat the
umpire and Mr. Maril the catcher were standing. He took his stance, and
made a few practice swings. It had been quite a few years. He looked
into the FCO's eyes for some hint of what to expect, but found none in
the Vulcan-Bajorans poker-face.
The first pitch came in, looked good, and he swung. "Strike!" Bat
screamed, right behind J.C. He jumped. "Spirits, Bat! Don't do that!"
"Sorry, Justin. I love this," said Bat. Maril muttered some Tamarian
proverb that undoubtedly applied to them. The next one J.C. let come in,
and rewarded with Bats cry of, "Ball. Good choice, Justin." He looked
out onto the mound at Lt. Jerran. He caught the ball from Bat, rubbed
his hands on his shirt. And looked straight at J.C. The next one came in
fast, and J.C. bat cracked it off to the side behind the foul line. Bat
immediately barked, "Foul. Come on, Justin that's one and two. You have
to hit the next one." | |||
"I got it," said J.C. Swinging fiercely in practice, J.C. took stance.
This one from Jerran came in a little high, but when the bat cracked it,
it went rolling, a grounder. J.C. tossed the bat, and bolted for 1st.
The grounder rolled to the right of Jerran, who in a blur seemed to
turn, dive for the rolling ball, scoop it up, turn again, and throw it
to the crewman covering first, all in one motion. The crewman caught it
as J.C. dove for the base. Everyone grew quiet, and turned to Bat. He
stood, shook his head, "Out!". J.C. got up, brushed himself off. He
walked back to Bat, and stopped. Almost nose to nose, J.C. stared at
Bat, and smiled a boyish grin, "Good call, umpire", and kicked some dirt
onto the umpire, then ran for the bench and replicator for a drink.
"Hey, is that legal?", grinned the Ump. Reaching their 'teams' bench,
the CEO, Lt. Koreth eyed J.C. as he sat down beside him. "Honorable
attempt, Mr. Allard." | |||
"Uh, thank you, Sir." J.C. took off his cap...
... CPO Tamarov wiped his forehead. The first ball he had swung at and
missed. He let the next three go by, luckily getting three balls from
Jerran. One more and the FCO would walk him. Lt. Jenn had hit the home
run, and Mr. Allard had almost gotten on base, but got out. The next one
came almost outside to the right, but the end of the bat connected,
sending the ball up high to left field. Alex tore off for 1st, almost
forgetting to drop the bat behind him. The red shirt crewman in left
field ran to get the ball, but not fast enough, as in bounced mere feet
from him. He scooped it up, and tossed it to the Shortstop-Doctor. Alex
made it to first, but eyeing the approaching wolf with ball-in-glove,
banished any thoughts Alex had at all of reaching second....

Zane had opted to play left field and now three innings into the
game he was regretting the choice. After the intial flurry of activity
that had stated it off it had settled, like most baseball games eventually
do, into a rather slow pace. The fact that no one had hit anything out to
left field didn't help. Fortunately he had a good view of the adjacent
field where a large group were playing what someone had told him was
frisbee football. This seemed much more interesting and definetly more
exciting. At least there was running involved. With a grunt he flung his
head down towards the ground.
"Do I even want to know?" Bat asked as walked up from the edge of
the field to find Zane bent over, his left cheek parallel with the grass.
"No." The Captain replied firmly. "What are you doing on the
field? We are in the middle of a game."
The bartender snorted. "Yeah I've been watching, just been chaos
out here for you. I noticed that you didn't get a chance to eat so I
brought you this." He held up a very large sausage smothered in a number
of toppings, some of which Zane didn't recognize. A few more light taps
to the right side of his head and then he stood accepting the food.
"Thanks. Nothing worse then getting water stuck in your ears."
"A popcorn kernal at the back of your throat?" Bat offered before
grimacing as he watched Chief Larocque jump up to catch a high frisbee and
then come crashing down on his back. "Or that." He added. Zane nodded.
"The dunk tank was a good idea. Loosened everyone up." He took a
big bite of the sausage. "Next time ask me first."
"Now we both know you would have agreed to it so why waste the
time." Bat said with a grin. "Uh your up."
"What?" Zane asked before following Bat's pointed finger to the
high fly ball heading his way. "Here!" He said as he handed Bat the half
eaten sausage and jogged off to get underneath the ball. It was a high
one with not a lot of speed to it so, exhausted, it sank like a rock and
was easily caught. A quick throw to second and Zane returned to Bat.
"I was just talking with Ensign Lee. She seems to be a good kid,
still a little nervous though." Bat continued as he handed back the
sausage. | |||
"Well its her first cruise, that's to be expected. She seem
satisfied with today's results?"
"So far. She got all clinical on me but the gist of it was
everyone is relaxing and having fun. Its also helping the new crew
intergrate in with the old." The old bartender waved over towards the
lively game of frisbee football.
Zane laughed. "You never were the clincal type."
"Why waste your time with 15 letter words. Say what you mean and
get on with it...." His voice trailed off as he watched the action on the
infield. "Well thats it."
Zane gestured towards the bench. "Shall we?"
As the two men walked towards Zane's team's bench the conversation
turned towards the upcoming mission. "Any thoughts on what your going to
find out there?" Bat asked.
"A lot of very small debris if what the survivors told Fleet are
accurate. I'm actually surprised any of the escape pods made it past the
ships explosion. Must've been a rocky ride."
"Ever been through pod ejection?" Bat asked.
"Only on the holodeck."
"It ain't alot of fun." Bat unconsciously rubbed a shoulder that
had popped last time he had ejected. "I can't see there being much
information left to find. Surely the two rescue ships did a thorough
search." The retired Starfleet officer prodded for information. He
understood he was no longer 'in the loop' anymore and he hated it.
"Well they did but it was the GHENT and the WESTPHALIA that
repsonded." Zane replied in answer.
"They're both diplomatic ships." Bat said with a nod. "Not
much in the way of scientific equipment or personnel."
"No. But the FEYNMAN on the other hand...." He shrugged. "Still
I don't expect to find a 'smoking gun' but some info on the weapon type
used, something about their drive system, maybe even a trail to follow.
I'm sure we'll find something."
"Well are you two still friends?" A new voice entered the
picture. | |||
Bat chuckled. "I guess. Just don't tell anyone, I've got my
reputation to consider."
Krysa grinned. "Nice catch."
Zane returned the smile and held her glance. "Nice hit."
Bat raised an eyebrow. | |||
Zane turned to face his gathering team as Krysa jogged off to her
position. "Ok who's up?"
"The Terrifying Tamarian!" Jerran shouted out before making a
show of handing the FO his bat. "Your weapon sire."

Krysa took her spot on the field as Commander Maril stepped up to
bat. Lt. Meleah took her position at the pitchers mound throwing the
ball up in down in her right had as she eyed the FO.
She threw her first pitch, which whizzed by the Tamarian hitting Lt.
Koreth in his catchers padding, and knocking the breath out of him.
"Are you alright, Lt.?" Meleah called.
Koreth, who was immediately shooing away those that reached to help
him up, sputtered out, "I'm fine!"
"Perhaps I should slow the next one down a bit," called the android.
Koreth growled and said, "That will not be necessary." He quickly
moved to his catchers position.
Maril muttered back at the engineer, "Speak for yourself," as he
prepared to attempt to hit the Science Officer's next pitch.
Despite Koreth's statement that slowing down the ball would not be
necessary, Meleah apparently decided it would be best, as her next
pitch did not whizz by quite so quickly, and Koreth was easily able
to catch it as Maril swung the bat connecting with nothing but air.
Maril, prepared the next time for Meleah's change in tactic, made a
beautiful hit in Krysa's general direction. In an instant Krysa
charged for the ball and was very close to making a perfect catch
were it not for a small imperfection in the field where she ran. She
tripped, falling gracefully, but missing the ball. She jumped up and
gave chase, quickly recapturing the ball and throwing it to second
base where Maril was closing in.
Unfortunately for Krysa's team, she was not fast enough and Maril
made it to the base safe. As Krysa moved back to her spot, brushing
the dirt off, she noticed Bat smiling at her. She waved at him and he
grinned, waving back. There was something in his eye, that made her
take a second look. But he'd already turned and headed back to his
grill where several of the crew were standing demanding more of his
tantalizing specialties.
She turned her attention back to the game, chalking the odd look up
to her imagination and soon forgetting all about it, as Terri stepped
up to the plate. "If Krysa can do this .. so can I," he called
cheerfully out to where the Ops officer stood.
Krysa grinned, "Go ahead and try, fly-boy."
"Just don't trip this time," he grinned, and Krysa chuckled. It felt
good to be able to laugh and joke with her friends. After the
drastic changes that had gone on in her life over the past several
months, it felt really good to simply relax. As she pondered this,
her gaze fell on the Captain waiting on the bench for his turn at
bat, chatting amiably with his teammates.
Her attention was drawn back to the game at hand as she heard the
ball crack against Jerran's bat. She looked quickly and was thankful
it was headed to the other side of the field, as she was in no
position to run for it. | |||
*** | |||
Krysa sat at one of the table with a glass of lemonade as Lt. Allard
walked by, "Good game, Lt.," he said gallantly.
"Yes, it was," she grinned, slapping his out stretched hand.
She heard the voice behind her. "Aren't you eating, Krysa?" asked Bat
taking a seat next to her.
"I've already eaten, Bat. Do you want me to get as big as a house?"
she laughed. | |||
"You haven't eaten very much, young lady. It's not like you," he said
with a smirk, "One might think you had other things on your mind."
She eyed him, "No, not really. What do you have on your mind?"
"Me? Nothing. Just making sure my customers are happy," he said,
spying the Captain, he called, "Hey Zee, come on over here and tell
your second officer that I always make sure my customers are happy."
Zane threw the Officer-turned-Barkeep an odd look but stepped up to
the table where the two sat, "Happy customers, Bat? You?" he
chuckled. | |||
"Sit down, boy, don't make me look up at you. Strains my neck muscles
." | |||
Zane looked at Krysa who shrugged. Pulling out a chair he sat down,
keeping an eye on Bat. | |||
"I was just telling Krysa that .. Hey," he called toward the grill
where Lt. Koroth and Lt. Meleah were standing. The Klingon and the
android turned to look at Bat, not any less confused then the couple
sitting at the table with him, "Excuse me," he said to Krysa and
Zane, "I've gotta keep my grill out of the hands of those officers of
yours." He was off in a flash, leaving the two staring after him.
"What's with him?" Zane asked.
"Beats me," answered Krysa.

Shuttle Port on Cait<br>
"Ma'am, the shuttle will be leaving for Dexertos III in 10 minutes,"
said the young man. | |||
The green-skinned woman stood gracefully, turning to face him. "Thank
you, sir." He accent was thick and, and her voice deep, "My family
will be most appreciative that you were able to get this shuttle for
me on such short notice."
"Of course, Lady Elise. I'm only sorry that we did not know earlier
that you were coming so that we could have had less confusion for
you." The man was bending over backwards to impress the woman, "I
wish I had a more comfortable shuttle for you. But it would be quite
a wait .." | |||
"That's quite alright," she said quickly, smiling kindly at him,
"It's my fault. Please do not blame yourselves."
"You are too kind. Please do tell your father that we will be more
then willing to shuttle you around anytime you need."
"I will." She stood and headed toward the shuttle. The man grabbed
her bags and followed her quickly. The woman maintained her calm
exterior but inside she was bubbling with laughter. Things were going
much better then expected despite the FEYNMAN Captain's attempt to
thwart her at every turn. First being escorted off the starship and
then immediately off the base! She had been infuriated and it had
almost ruined everything. Luckily she was able to get the shuttle to
take her to Cait where she quickly found what she needed to finish
her ensemble and her disguise, which included a slight facial
prosthesis and skin dyeing.
She'd also been able to get in touch with her contact on EPSILON, who
told her things were all ready for her to head to Dexertos III. The
Dexertosian Premiere's only daughter was on a holiday, and had become
a prime target for her associates. There would be no foul ups this
time. There was no way they would find out she wasn't whom she
appeared to be. This time the original had been eliminated. Not to
mention, this time she was not working with an unstable man with a
vendetta against Starfleet. If she played her cards right, Starfleet
wouldn't be anywhere near this time.
She took her seat on the commercial shuttle headed toward her next
job on Dexertos III. The Dexertosians had only been admitted to the
Federation for a little less then a year. The green-skinned humanoids
were known for their pleasant and friendly nature, as well as for
their planet's rich deposits of several very useful minerals. Her
associates were very interested in getting an inside seat to the
planetary government.
*** | |||
As the shuttle approached the planet, the woman was distracted by the
sight of a Starfleet Vessel docked at the small starbase orbiting
Dexertos III. "What's a Starfleet Vessel doing here?"
The pilot smiled at her, "It's because of you ma'am. Seems your
father became concerned by you absence and sent your picture to
Starfleet to find you. You showed up on Cait just in time. I do
believe your father was .."
She interrupted him, "He sent my picture to Starfleet?"
"Yes, just in case the worst .." the man continued to drone on but
the woman's mind was whirling. There was no way .. She would just
have to play it cool and hope things were well in hand. She wasn't
willing to accept that fact that she had two failed jobs in a row!
"Could you contact my father. I would like to speak to him."
"Of course, Lady Elise." The pilot said quickly. "Shuttle Holiday to
Dexertos III. Lady Elise would like to speak to the Premiere."
<Hold please, Shuttle Holiday.>
Soon a the Planetary logo on the screen was replaced by and
white-haired, green-skinned man. <Elise, Elise are you there?>
"I'm here, Father." she said.
<Oh my girl, I've been so worried. You did not check in when you
reached Thrantid as you were supposed to.>
"I know, and I apologize. I was so caught up in the spectacular
sights. And it had been a long trip."
<Darling, there are Starfleet security here who must check you out.>
the man said frowning slightly.
"What do you mean?" she asked.
<It seems there may be a problem with someone trying to impersonate
you.> | |||
"Me?" she asked innocently, but already her mind was whirling about

The Commander-in-Chief stormed from his office, his eyes locked on

frustration and with the creeping realization that it was something very
wrong. | |||
All eyes in the large room glued themselves to the glow of their
monitors save for one pair. Colonel Utimba climbed up the three stairs to
the command level and faced his general. He gestured to the north-east
quadrant on the early warning board. "They entered into orbit
approximately 4 minutes and thirty-two seconds ago."
"How many?" The general asked as his eyes scanned the readouts
around the room. All armed forces were on high alert, interceptors were
in the air and all their nuclear forces had been put on a thirty minute
countdown. | |||
"12 small and one large, the small ones could hold 10 of our
carriers and the large one could easily hold the 12 small ones."
The general turned, shock clearly on his face. "The Republic?"
It was obvious that their terrestial enemy could not be responsible so
Utimba took the question as it was meant. "Like us they are on high
alert, missiles on line, nucs in the air and boomers going deep."
The general swore and lifted the receiver from the desk. "Get me

Admiral Coheis leaned back into her high backed chair and
savored the smell emanating from her steaming mug of hilati. It was
about the only thing she was enjoying this cold rainy morning. Whoever
the genius back at fleet was who ordered an unscheduled training op in the
middle of the winter storm season was going to get a foot up his backside
when the fleet put into port in 3 weeks. Full alert indeed! World
tension was the calmest it'd been in over 15 years and even those crazy
Ryuli's wouldn't lauch a sneak attack through this muck.
She raised her viewscope to her eyes and looked through the
bridge's main windshield, its wipers carelessly flinging sleet from the
glass in all directions. On the deck the last of the all-weather
interceptors had been launched. To the east, the missile cruiser STALWART
bobbed up and down on the rough scenes. "I'll have someone's head for
this." She fumed to herself.
"Sir?" A officer within earshot asked.
"Mind your station commander." She answered curtly before taking
a sip from her mug. | |||
"Aye sir." | |||
Coheis turned back to stare out the window at the STALWART, her
attention caught by the wild flashing of one of it signal lamps. Thirty
years ago when she had graduated from the Naval Academy she had been
assigned as a communications officer so, although a little rusty, she had
little problem deciphering the flashes. It was obviously not an
offically communique and she wondered idely what her own ships
lamper would report to his superior when pressed for what the STALWART had
sent. Probably something along the lines of 'all's well.' After all
thats what she used to tell her superior when she had been the one
standing out in the cold and the rain busily complaining to her comrades
on the other ships. She smiled at the memory.
"Admiral!" Captain Kiloc shouted out as he bounded up the stairs
from the control center. Coheis didn't like the tone and her eyes flashed
to the radar displays. Strangely they were blank. "All satellite
communications have been cut, we've lost our eyes!"
Damn! "Signal the fleet to flank and come about to port, heading
due north." The order was punctured by a blazing light to port followed
almost instaneously by a deafening blast. All heads turned. The STALWART
was gone. | |||
The Admiral jumped from her chair. "Order all ships weapons
free!" It was the last thing she ever said.

carrying a hundred warriors. They simply fell from the sky, an easy
target for the defenders guns. But even the precision fire could not stop
them all. They couldn't even stop enough.
Around the planet the drop ships landed and the warriors emerged.
They marched outward destroying everything in their path, soldier and

inevitably they were overwhelmed.

The door burst open and his four security officers drew their

The afternoon was drawing to a close. With most of the sports

of conversation and quiet laughter. For his part Zane chose to unwind
alone. He had a lot to think about and after wandering from group to
group to make sure everyone was relaxing he found himself strolling along
the pebble strewn beach. He stopped near an old log and sifted through
the rocks to find a handful of smooth flat ones. It had been along time
since he tried....His first toss saw the rock plunk unceremoniuosly into
an approaching wave but soon he had reaquired his skill and was closing in
on his alltime record of skips. Part of his mind carefully analyzed wave
frquency, trajectory, the weight of the rock and acceleration but the rest
just thought back to boyhood days and whether or not there were any
holographic water spiders he could try to bomb with bigger rocks. He
smiled at the memory but the smile slowly faded as he watched a rock sink
to the bottom and the captain in him reminded him of the coming unknowns.

"Time?" The captain asked as one of his rocks skipped 7 times

They were 22 minutes ahead of schedule, he'd have to commend

due to his battle with a changeling...
The Serapis was a large ship, and from the reports
of how she was destroyed, the debris field would be huge.
He and his staff had been mulling over the best way to go
through the wreckage. | |||
"Sir, announced Ens. Dunnon, we are approaching the
debris field... Delphi is being initiated by the bridge."
Tarrant nodded. "All required power to the Delphi, I want
two men on that system round the clock. We'll be putting
in overtime with it, and we need to keep her cool."
"Tarrant to Bridge" | |||
<Bridge here, what is it Lieutenant?> Came Zane's voice.

"Yes, sir." He then turned to the Ops station and said, "Care to join me,
LT Jenn? I could use a decent copilot on the NOGURA."
"Only if you promise not to get yourself knocked out this time?" she
grinned. | |||
He nodded with a chuckle and the two stood and headed for the
turbolift on their way to the shuttlebay.
"Be careful," she heard Zane say as they walked by him.
"Oh course, sir," said Jerran. Krysa met Zane's eyes briefly and
nodded before following Jerran into the turbolift.
As the turbolift doors closed, Jerran began to explain how he would
like | |||
the mission to run and what he wanted Krysa to do, but Krysa's mind
wandered back to the Captain's dark eyes, which had been full of
concern, | |||
though the mission was a relatively simple one. Despite the fact that
she'd | |||
had been overly cautious the past couple of days about using her
empathy, | |||
she had been able to read his concern. The eyes were much harder to
disguise, and despite his usually stoic demeanor, the captain's eyes
were | |||
very expressive. | |||
"Krysa, are you listening to me?" came the voice of the FCO.
She turned to look at him, and began to nod slightly, then shook her
head. | |||
"I'm sorry, Terri, I was distracted. What were you saying?"
Jerran looked at her with narrowed eyes, "You'll have to do better
then that when we're on the shuttle. I don't want to crash into any of the
debris out there." | |||
Krysa chuckled, "I'll be right with you, I promise."
"Okay, I'll go over this one more time. I should be able to handle
most of | |||
the flying while you man the sensors. Particularly when it comes to
small | |||
pieces of debris I might miss. In this kind of debris field,
sometimes the | |||
smallest pieces can be the most deadly."
Krysa nodded, she could do that with no problem. This was going to be
fairly routine debris check and they shouldn't run into any problems.
As they boarded the runabout, Krysa took her seat and began to check
the | |||
readiness of the sensors as Jerran did a preflight check. Within a
short | |||
time they were ready to go and Jerran was calling the flight deck to
get | |||
clearance to depart. | |||
<You have clearance, sir.>
"Excellent," said Jerran with a wink at Krysa as he gently urged the
runabout off the floor of the shuttlebay and out the shuttlebay
doors. | |||
"This is the runabout Nogura, we are on our way and will intercept
the debris field in 12 minutes."
Krysa had already began her scans as the runabout sped toward the
debris | |||
field. She picked up the readings of the other shuttles as they made
their | |||
way to different areas of the debris field, but so far their were
little to | |||
no readings from the field itself.

Scene: Main Cargo Bay, Deck 17<br>
For the past few hours he had remained on the bridge watching the
wreckage that had once been SERAPIS float by. In actual fact he had no
desire to stray far from the bridge considering the reason they were here.
But having a received a rather ominous, 'Sir we've got something down here
you'll want to see' he had made his way down into the bowels of the ship.
While the bridge and science departments scanned the wreckage with
the DELPHI array and Jerran and Jenn led a closer inspection with the
shuttles, the engineering department was beaming pieces of debris onto the
FEYNMAN at random for a more thorough investigation. When Zane strode
throught the parting heavy doors of the cargo bay he walked into what
looked like barely controlled chaos.
The deck, strewn with pieces of the ship was a grim sight and one
that the Captain found surprising. As expected there were large fragments
of ripped and torn hull, twisted and deformed by the force of the attack
and the later explosion. But was not expected were the personal effects
scattered throughout the room. A chair here, a book there, a child's toy.
For not the first time Zane thanked the gods that the FEYNMAN had not been
the first ship on the scene. The unlucky crews of the GHENT and
WESTPHALIA had been the one's who had had to retrieve the physical remains
of the crew that had not survived but whose bodies had not been
vapourised. And if that had not been bad enough all the remains had had
to be examined in the hopes of finding a clue as to what had happened to
the SERAPIS. | |||
"Excuse me sir." Koreth's deep voice broke his thoughts and he
he put the doll back down on the table.
"Any results so far?" | |||
"No sir. We want to retrieve a little more of the debris.
Another hour or so and we should have a good cross section to examine.
After that it will depend on what there is to find."
<<Jason: Fill in any technobabble stuff that may fit>>
"So what have you got for me?" He asked.
"We found this embedded in the back of a piece of what looks to be
a bridge console." Koreth lifted a square plaque up from a workbench.
Zane took it from the engineer and stared down at it for a few
seconds. "SERAPIS' dedication plaque." His finger traced the ships motto
etched along the bottom. 'I have not yet begun to fight.' <nowiki>*How ironic.*</nowiki>
Zane thought bitterly. "Thank you Mr. Koreth." He said quietly.
"Anything else?" | |||
"No sir." | |||
"Very well I'll let you get back to your work." Turning he
headed back to the bridge. The plague would be kept in his ready-room
until the FEYNMAN returned to EPSILON and he could turn it over to the
admiral and inevitably the SILVER memorial chapel.

"Captain, I recommend we launch a series of Class-7 long-range probes.
Combine with the Delphi, and our shuttle teams, this should cover almost
the entire sector." | |||
LCDR Maril turned, "Lt., wouldn't the probes be redundant of the
shuttles?", asked the XO.
"Not really, Sir. The shuttles will be concentrating on the immediate
area of the salvage site and surrounding area. The long-range probes
will actually extend the range of the Delphi array. In essence, an
'early-warning' system for us, Sirs." Maril turned to Zane, who nodded.
"Make it so, Mr. Allard" said Zane.
"Aye, Sir. Six probes loaded....and launched. We've traded speed for
extra sensitivity, so they're only traveling at .25 impulse. Optimum
distance in approx. 8 minutes, Sir."
"Very well, Lt." said Maril. J.C. kept a constant watch on the
shuttles. The slightest hint of danger and he would tractor them back to
the FEYNMAN. He took a deep breath. While the other departments took an
active role in missions such as this, his department endured the endless
waiting for something to happen, only to react to the unexpected. He had
temporarily sent his three Cadets to aid LT. Meleah's department, where
he thought they would do the most good.
He eyed Jonas and T'Boc. Jerry Jonas, a Terran, was wiping the barrel
of his rifle. T'Boc was glaring at some unknown point straight ahead,
with the expressionless look Vulcan's have when in deep thought. J.C.
sighed, and called up the systems diagnostics for the weapons controls
for the third time this shift....

"Captain." The BETA aCSO broke the studious silence of the
bridge. "We're picking up an approaching ship on one of our remote
probes, bearing three-two-five mark one."
"Red alert!" Maril ordered instantly and then made contact with
Lt. Jenn on the NOGURA to warn her of the approaching ship.
"Who is it?" Zane asked, hoping it was not SERAPIS' executioner
returning to the scene of the crime.
"Onscreen, full magnification." Zane ordered although the ship
was still far enough away that it would be little more than a brighter
than usual star. "Configuration?"
"Long cylindrical hull, four large wings starting at 375 metres
from the bow and extending out at a 45 degree angle for approximately 100
metres, mass, 1,900,00 metric tonnes. Heavily armed, armoured and
shielded. All offensive and defensive systems online. Based on
configuration and markings 80% certainty vessel is an Issahi warship
comparable to a Federation heavy destroyer."
"Helm plot an intercept course keeping us between the shuttles and
the approaching vessel."
"Aye sir," Kaz replied, "Coming to new course: four-five mark
six-seven. Increasing speed to full impulse."
"Patch me through to the NOGURA."
"Channel open." | |||
[Seems we have some visitors.] Krysa announced matter-of-factly
as her face appeared on the screen.
"We think it's an Issahi warship but we're moving to intercept.
Try to keep yourselves out of trouble."
[We've got enough here to keep us busy. Don't worry about us
sir. NOGURA out.] | |||
Maril leaned over towards Zane. "A friendly visit?"
"Hope so. But weapons online isn't exactly a amicable opening."
"We are being hailed. Voice only." Allard informed, he had
arrived on the bridge seconds after the red alert had sounded.
Zane raised an eyebrow. "Open a channel."
[Identify yourself.] The alien voice demanded.
"This is the Federation starship FEYNMAN. Identify <nowiki>*yourself*</nowiki>"
Zane replied just as curtly.
"We are now in weapons range." Allard said quietly enough for
only the bridge crew to hear. Zane nodded in response. "The alien ship
is now sending a video signal."
"On screen." | |||
[[I am sub-commander Martin Ross of the Issahi Confederacy warship
Vigil. You will state your purpose here.]] The human stood in what
appeared to be the middle of the Vigil's bridge. Behind him a native
Issahi sat staring coldly at the screen. He assumed him? to be the
Captain. | |||
Zane decided to lay it all on the table. "This debris field is
all that is left of the USS SERAPIS. Several days ago it was destroyed by
an unknown force. We have been sent here to investigate." On the
viewscreen both Human and Issahi remained impassive. Finally Ross spoke,
[The mission of this ship?] The demanding tone was clearly evident.
"SERAPIS was sent on a diplomatic mission to make contact with
your government?" | |||
[Purpose?] | |||
"As a follow up to your visit to Starbase EPSILON. It was our
hope to continue the dialogue you started with the desire to perhaps
establish a realtionship which is mutually beneficial."
The 'captain' of the Issahi ship barked out orders to Ross in a
guttural language that the universal tranlator could not decipher. Ross
replied and for a few seconds the two seemed to have a heated argument. A
loud grunt from the Captain signified the conversation was over and Ross
turned back to face the screen. [What is the result of your
investigation?] | |||
"Its only in its preliminary stages," Zane replied, "as of yet
there are no results." | |||
[Very well we will wait until your investigation is complete and
then will escort you to our homeworld.] Again it sounded very much like
an order. | |||
"I welcome the opportunity to visit your homeworld and I thank you
for the opportunity to meet with your leaders. The investigation will
take some time. Perhaps you and your Captain would like to join us on the
FEYNMAN as an informal first step."
[No.] The screen when blank.
"A friendly bunch." Maril said somewhat miffed.
"Well it does seem to be in-line with what little we know. I'd
like to know what there discussion was about."
"It did seem to be heated." The FO agreed.
"Captain, the Issahi vessel has powered down its weapons but not
shields." | |||
Zane looked out at the the dull grey hulled ship with the
bright streaks of crimson on its wings. "Do the same Mr. Allard."

''"Chief Carden, I am sending down our preliminary findings. I want you to find out whether the substance
''ytterbium, when used in a weapon such as a phaser beam or photon torpedo, could create a large enough explosion to'' ''destroy the Serapis. I also need to know whether there were any chemicals on board the Serapis which would''
''react to the presence of ytterbium. Cadet Bergmann, I need an in-depth analysis on whether ytterbium would be able to shield a warp core."''
As time and analysis continued, Science and Engineering eventually
found themselves working together... particularly on the possible effects of
ytterbium on the Serapis.
Chief Carden and Ens. Dunnon were teamed up, and had been working
on what a ytterbium weapon would do. But every report seemed to indicate
that the substance wasn't a volatile one. The hull composition of the
Serapis and her shields would have been able to stop such a weapon.
But the mass of the substance was in such abundance that it had to
have been used some how.
Eventually, Meleah and Koreth found themselves in holodeck 2 going
over the images Starfleet had put together.... which wasn't much.
Most of it was model speculation based on the initial findings and what
they could piece together from the Serapis data.
"We've been unable to find any effect that Ytterbium would have
on the composits which made up the Serapis's hull. Nor should such
a phaser weapon have been able to go through the shields."
If Tarrant hadn't known better, he would have thought Meleah was
frustrated.... had she not been machine. He sure was.
"But the hull debris from the Serapis on the port side has been nearly coated
with it. It had to have been a weapon."
Meleah shook her head. "No, My team has found no evidence that
such a weapon would have any affect."
Tarrant looked at the frozen simulation before him. Something just wasn't
right. The Serapis was taken so easily...
"Perhaps we are looking at this from too much of a - <nowiki>*traditional*</nowiki> point of
view." Announced Meleah.
"How do you mean." | |||
"We have looked into ytterbium as a weapon, like a phaser or torpedo.
Something which works as our weapons.. causing breach type damage."
Tarrant nodded and closed his eyes. "which means that, if ytterbium
was used, it would have to be in a different way."
"Assuming it's a weapon at all." Pointed out Meleah.
Tarrant was convinced however that it was. His mind started trying to
think of what systems were required by a starship. Warp Core.... engines....
shields... Nav. Deflector.... S.I.F.
"The Structural Integrity Field" whispered Tarrant, his eyes still closed.
"Lieutenant?" | |||
"What if ytterbium affects the SIF?"
Meleah thought on it for a while. Our initial search did only include
how it would affect the shields and hull in an energy or torpedo
type aspect... it's a plausible theory."
"Computer, download all known data concerning ytterbium and the
Structural Integrity Field of the Starfleet Solar Class Vessels."
<Working....... Download Complete>
"Computer, show simulation of what gasseous state ytterbium would
have on the Solar Class Vessel, primarily on the Structural Integrity
System." | |||
<Working...... Simulation complete.>
The holodeck image morphed again to show just a Solar class vessel.
Then the computer allowed a ytterbium gas cloud to come into
contact. There was no effect.
Meleah piped in, "Computer, set Solar class vesel to run at 1/2 impulse....
and re-run simulation."
This time the effect was devistating. As the Solar vessel came into contact
with the ytterbium its sections began to separate. It was as if the SIF
was no longer working at all. The yttebium seemed to react with the
field, and cause it to break down.
Their enemy knew them well.....
"Tarrant to Commander Zane... you better come to Holodeck 2."

[Captain, you have two messages coming in.]
"Thank-you ensign." Zane replied as he swung his desk terminal
around to face him. "Pipe them in here."
Powering up the display he noted that the first was a Starfleet
communique from the SILVER JAG office someone had flagged it for him and
forwarded it along. Opening the message he scanned down the text at first
with a scowl and then with a grin that quickly erupted into a laugh. It
seemed his one time blackmailer, Dee, had been picked up by Starfleet
Security for impersonating the daughter of a dignitary from the planet
Dexertos III. He forwarded the message along to the rest of the senior
staff with a flag for both Krysa and Glin'kharr. He wondered which of the
two would be more satisfied with Dee's current fate.
The second message was a video recording from Dee herself. It was
a rather lengthy message which went from her commendnation of the
FEYNMAN's captain to her flattery of him. But one thing was made
perfectly clear, she expected Zane to help her out of this mess or she
would be talking to Krysa soon after. With a laugh he forwarded Dee's
video message along to Krysa. He couldn't wait to get back to EPSILON and
see Dee's face when he told her she could do her worst and he didn't
care. There was nothing quite as satisfying when the wheel turned.

<nowiki>_______________________</nowiki><br>
MD: 4.1700<br> | |||
Scene:Holodeck 2<br> | |||
Zane strode into the holodeck to find the USS SERAPIS being pulled
apart in slow motion as Meleah and Koreth 'stood' in space quietly
watching. They turned as they heard the Captain enter.
"Reset program." Koreth ordered. The SERAPIS flickered from near
oblivion to its once proud form. In the backgroud the dark mystery ship
approached. | |||
"What have you got?" | |||
"Begin program. Half speed." Koreth ordered.
The scene played itself out as it had done so in the past and 30
seconds later when it ended Zane could not seen any breakthrough. The
mystery ship arrived fired its weapon and the SERAPIS was gone. The
Captain looked at the two officers. "So?"
"Computer replay program at time index 325.7 1/4 speed."
Again the simulation reconstituted itself but this time it began
with the beam from the marauder hitting the SERAPIS. Slowly the SERAPIS
began to split apart, and then exploded. The simulation ended. "Some
sort of disruptor beam?"
"No sir," Meleah began and she quickly ran down their theories of
the ytterbium and its effect on the structural integrity field. Zane
considered the theory for a few moments. "It sounds plausible and would
certainly explain why so much of the internal effects remained whole.
But even if the ship was moving at only a fraction of impulse the crew
would have been a thin paste on the bulkheads a millisecond after the SIF
failed." | |||
"Thats what we're trying to figure out now." Koreth answered.
"Logically the SERAPIS would have to be at a near stop before the
beam hit. Perhaps it also contained a tractor beam." Meleah added.
"Either way it seems this is a powerful weapon." Koreth frowned,
a weapon the FEYNMAN or any other Starfleet ship could not withstand.
"We are not entirely sure it is a weapon." Meleah continued. "It
could be anyform of beam, perhaps a sensor scan, the only credible theory
so far is that a beam containing ytterbium was responsible for destroying
the SERAPIS. We can not speculate on intention without further evidence."
Zane and Koreth exchanged a silent glance of agreement. It *was*
a weapon. "Continue your tests but I need a write up of your preliminary
findings to send to EPSILON as soon as possible. If you come up with
anything else I'll be on the bridge."

It had been a busy though uneventful shift though the Serapis wreckage for
the two officers on the Runabout. Krysa was impressed with the level of
information they were able to collect from the wreckage using both the
Delphi and the shuttles in conjunction.
Looking over at Terri she thought he looked a little bored. "Nothing
interesting enough for you?"
He grinned, "Well not as interesting as an asteroid belt."
"Oh please, don't remind me. I was scared out of my wits!" Krysa chuckled.
<Runabout NOGURA, This is the FEYNMAN. We have company.>
The two officers looked at each other, and Krysa turned her sensors away
from the debris field and toward the approaching ship.
"What is it?" asked Jerran looking toward her console.
"Looks like it's probably an Issahi Warship. Heavily armed for battle too,
from the look of it." | |||
"Let's hope that isn't what took out the Serapis." Said Jerran.
Krysa chuckled, "Nope. Whatever took out the Serapis was a hundred times
worse." She winked at him. "Of course, what it might do to a bunch of
shuttles in a debris field wouldn't be pretty."
He nodded, "I agree, let's stay out of it's way."
There was a chirp as the channel reopened to the FEYNMAN. When the bridge
of the starship appeared, she spoke, "Seems we have some visitors."
<We think it's an Issahi warship but we're moving to intercept. Try to keep
yourselves out of trouble.>
"We've got enough here to keep us busy. Don't worry about us sir. NOGURA
out." | |||
Krysa turned the majority of her scanners back to the debris field to
continue their search, though she kept an eye on the new ship. Jerran also
kept an eye on it. Krysa chuckled, knowing that he was much more interested
in the Issahi warship rather then the debris.

Krysa had become intent on some interesting readings in the debris field,

He chuckled, "Well, it's be kind fun to see some tactical moves from that

"Shall I inform the Captain and see if we can get them to show off for you,

"Do you think they would?" he joked.
Zane's face once again appeared on the comm screen. <We will be visiting
the Issahi homeworld as soon as your investigations are complete here.>
Krysa nodded, "That should take another 5 or 6 hours to be complete, sir."
"Five or six hours," Jerran moaned from the pilot's seat.
<That's fine.> said Zane ignoring the FCO, <I'm not going to rush you.
Though Koreth and Meleah have a theory they're working on. Perhaps it'll
help narrow our search.>
"Excellent." Krysa said.

Krysa looked over as a terminal began to flash. "It's coming though,

<Okay, let me know when you think you'll be done here.>
Krysa nodded as the screen faded.

The entity continued to seethe, waiting for the right opportunity to strike. It

USS Feynman:Bridge | |||
Maril felt a shiver pass through his body, as though he had just woken up from
a dream. He looked around him, but everything was fine.
"Are you okay, Commander?" Captain Zane asked, looking up from his
armrest console. | |||
"Fine, sir," Maril replied, trying to look relaxed. "Just a breath from Kirerdo."
Zane nodded knowingly, although his eyes still focused on Maril for a second.
Slowly, he turned back to the armrest.
Maril still felt strange, though. That shiver had been no ordinary shiver. It had
been colder, almost like an icy grip that had grabbed him without warning.
"What the-" came Lt.(jg) Allard's voice from behind.
"Is there a problem, Lieutenant?" Maril asked curiously, turning his head, as
the Captain swung around to look at Allard.
"Ah, no, sir, just a bump in the level of graviton particles about 5 AU's to our
starboard for about three seconds. It was probably just a sensor glitch, if it was
anything." | |||
"Get someone to check on that, Lieutenant," Zane ordered calmly.
"Aye, sir." | |||
As Zane looked back at a PADD and Allard talked to a junior officer about the
sensor array, Maril wondered: was there something really happening, or was he
just seeing reskolins in the waves?
MD 4.2000 | |||
After a few moments of whispering between Zane and Maril, Zane finally got
out of his coveted chair and walked into his Ready Room. Maril didn't sit down in
it, however. Although he would have liked to, it was past his shift, so he simply
announced: | |||
"Alright, ALPHA shift is over, BETA shift crews take stations. Lieutenant
Meleah, you have the Conn."
Meleah looked surprised as she got up from the science station and sat down
in the Command Chair. That was odd; Maril doubted that the android had
forgotten about her shift. Perhaps it was part of her emotion program.

Maril glanced at the information collected at the Serapis's destruction site.

So, that's that. | |||
Sorry for not posting in a while.
I'd estimate that we'll reach the edge of Issashi space at about 6.1200. This
would agree with Andy's post which said it would be over 36 hours to the nearest
system along that heading. (FYI, Jerran has the shift after Meleah, and Jenn and
Koreth have BETA and GAMMA shift the next day.
A weapon which would destroy our SIF would definitely be dangerous. I was
reading my tech manual and it seems that if our SIF/IDF fails, the most we can
accelerate is 30 m/sec/sec, while full impulse speed can sometimes cause
accelerations more than 300 times that.
My best guess on exactly how this weapon would work is that the ytterbium would
somehow react with the ceramic-polymer composite that conducts the SIF,
thereby not allowing the SIF to operate (since there would be no way to create it.)

[Koreth here.] came the instant reply.
"Lieutenant the shuttles have returned can you continue your

There was a short pause as, Zane assumed, Koreth and Meleah
discussed the situation. [Between the physical evidence and the
information gathered by the shuttle teams and the main sensors I don't see
there being much more information to gather. All we have to do now is put
it all together.] That sounded overly optimistic but Zane knew Meleah

Zane frowned to himself. He was pleased with the results of the
investigation thus far but the conclusions were not ones he had wanted. A
beam that would rip apart a ship by using its own SIF field against it was
unthinkable. Of course the end result was a destroyed ship, it really
didn't matter if it was a ytterbium beam or an incredibly powerful phaser
array. "Good. We'll be warping out within the hour. Zane out."
He turned back to his desk computer and after a few small edits to
his status report he re-read it for the final time.<br>

1. Initial investigation of USS SERAPIS wreckage site complete. No
additional remains recovered.
2. Investigation teams speculate USS SERAPIS destroyed by energy beam
containing element ytterbium. Ytterbium beam would use vessels SIF
to pull ship apart. Examination continues. <<SEE ATTACHED>>
3. Contacted by Issahi Confederacy Warship. Communication with Martin
Ross <<SEE ATTACHED>> | |||
4. Universal Translator unable to decipher Issahi language due to minimal
exposure. | |||
5. Proceeding to Issahi home world.

A quick glance to make sure that the investigation teams
preliminary reports as well as the tape of Zane's conversation with Ross
were attached and the report was surrendered to subspace. "Computer how
long for that message to reach Starbase EPSILON?"
<Seven point three hours.> Was the pleasant response.
Rising from his chair he headed for the bridge. "Mr. Allard open
a channel to the VIGIL."
"Channel open." Ross appeared on the screen.
[You have finished Captain.] It was a statement not a question.
"We have. Unfortunately we have been unable to ascertain what
destroyed the SERAPIS. I'm afraid it will remain a mystery unless further
evidence presents itself." Part of Zane did not like the fact that he was
lying to potential new friends. His instincts told him they would be
strong allies but his training reminded him they could just as easily be
new enemies as well. | |||
The Issahi Captain hissed something at Ross. "We will depart for
the homeworld immediately." The screen returned to a view of the
starfield. | |||
"Captain. The Vigil is leaving the system."
"Helm, stay with them."
"Aye sir. Coming to new course three-four-eight mark four-five.
Increasing speed to warp 6."
Zane turned to face the science station. "Lt. Swanson, has the
universal translator made any more progress with the Issahi language?"
"A little sir. But we need a few more minutes of substantial
dialogue before it will be able to translate with any accuracy."
He turned back to look at Maril with a shrug and a grin. "No
challenge if we had all the answers."
Maril snorted in agreement. "I wonder just where we are going?"
"Long range scans show several systems on or near this heading but
at this speed they are 36 hours away." The officer at OPS added.
Zane considered the information. "They'd have to be at least that
far or we'd have heard from the Issahi long ago. I guess its a case of
wait and see. Besides the longer we have the more time for Koreth and
Meleah to figure out exactly what happened to the SERAPIS and hopefully
come up with some sort of defence against it."
"Like Jilati from the mountain." Maril offered wisely.
"Exactly." Zane agreed wondered who the hell Jilati was and what
he did on the mountain. He chided himself for not reading more Tamarian
mythology. Until then he would never no how often his first officer was
pulling his leg. | |||
<<<NRPG>>> | |||
Well here we go! The edge of inhabited Issahi space will probably be some
distance away or as Zane said SF would have bumped into them already. And
I imagine the home world will be some distance past that. Of course we
don't have to RP a long boring journey but once we get into Issahi space
proper I imagine there'll be things to see!
Looking forward to actually getting there though. The Issahi seem to be a
very enigmatic race. | |||
Respectfully,<br> | |||
