Background Summary

ADM Conrad Veld has had a long, distinguished career in Star Fleet. He followed in the footsteps of his ancestors, serving the Federation as a Star Fleet Officer. He made his way up through Star Fleet's ranks fairly quickly, always performing beyond expectations. At the age of 37, he was given command of the USS ODYSSEY, a new SOVEREIGN-class vessel out of drydock built to replace its namesake which had been destroyed in a battle with Dominion forces under the command of CAPT Donald Varley. He held this command for 22 years, stepping down from that command 7 years ago to accept promotion.

His time in Star Fleet's upper administration echelons have been almost as impressive. As a newly-minted CDOR, he was given command of Star Fleet Public Affairs, an office which saw his interpersonal skills put to a far different use than deep-space starship command. Still, his time as COMPA was considered successful enough to merit another promotion to RADM and a posting to head the Emerging Threat Assessment Bureau.

Veld remained in charge of ETAB for just over two years, ably running the division with his trademark "hands-on" approach. During his tenure, ETAB provided TACFLEET, OSFI and Star Fleet as a whole with critical information regarding the geopolitical, miliatry and, most importantly, the economic state of the Gorn Hegemony, which was to prove vital in thwarting previously-hidden Gorn assets within Federation space in the Tybiiran Complex and Voira Tundra.

As a result, Veld was again promoted- this time to VADM- and placed in charge of ORANGE Fleet, Star Fleet's experimental warship development and testing division. During his tenure as CINCORANGE, he was instrumental in building the groundwork for upgrading the fleet's destroyer and cruiser fleets, neither of which has seen a significant upgrading of technology in over 4 years. Several of these projects are nearing the final stages of development and should soon be moving to the teasting stage.

With successes in both operational and administrative spheres withinStar Fleet, Veld was considered a "natural choice" for Commander-in-Chief, Star Fleet. He served in this capacity for two highly successful years, after whcih he retured from service.

Before he could get a foot our of Star Fleet Headquarters, however, he was asked to serve again- this time as the Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire; his combination of interpersonal skills and combat experience made him ideal for such a role. However, his time on Qo'Nos was short-lived: the Klingon Civil War erupted shortly after his arrival, and shortly thereafter Veld was forced to leave Qo'Nos as control of the Empire fell to Mor'Vath.

Upon his return, he stayed retired fro a short while, until a crisis at Star Fleet Command arose and, after Thomas Christian's ensuing resignation, Conrad Veld returned to the job of Commander-in-Chief, Star Fleet.

Having finished Christian's term, Veld has now taken over command of GOLD Fleet from his good friend John Brooks, who recently took over a re-opened BLUE Fleet.

Family Profile

The Veld family, while one cannot say is one of Star Fleet's oldest, has emerged as one of Star Fleet's most prominent. Conrad's father, Charles, retired a Vice Admiral; his daughter, Caylebreth, is currently the Commanding Officer of the USS CIRCE. Conrad's wife, Melinda, also served in Star Fleet until their marriage; retiring eliminated the question of a personal conflict coming into play while the then-CAPT Conrad Veld was CO of USS ODYSSEY.

While Conrad has no other children aside from Cayle, he does have a few nieces and nephews who currently serve in Star Fleet: CDR Samuel ("Sam") Carstairs (who, ironically, replaced Cayle for a short time after her abduction as XO of DS13 and now commands USS LEVIATHAN) and his brother, Richard Jr., son of Melinda Veld's brother Richard; and Callista ("Cal") Veld, daughter of COL Kenneth Veld (deceased) of the Star Fleet Marine Corps.

Conrad enjoys the friendship of ADM John R. Brooks, former CINCSF and current CINCGOLD. The Brooks and Veld families have enjoyed a closeness since the days when the elder Veld was a midshipman in the Academy. In fact, it was Brooks who, as CINCSF, gave Conrad his first flag appointment as Commander, Public Affairs.

In recent years, the Velds have also forged a close bond with the Sharpe family, another of Star Fleet's more prominent families. This bond, however, does not date back 40+ years as the Veld/Brooks friendship does; this one began when Cayle was assigned to DS13 as XO and befriended a young Marine CO fresh out of the Academy, then-2LT Molly sharpe. Shortly thtereafter, Conrad chose Molly's father, then-COL Richard Sharpe, as his Deputy Commander of Public Affairs. Since that time, the families have grown almost as close as blood relatives.

Personality Summary

Conrad is the exact opposite of both his daughter, Cayle (currently commanding USS CIRCE) and his wife, retired Councillor Melinda Veld in terms of emotional influences- he rarely shows them. While on the job, he is cool and calculating, unwilling to allow emotions to comprimise his decisions- he considers this to be a mistake that could prove fatal.

However, contrary to normal beliefs, this has NOT a problem in his family life. Off duty, he is a caring, loving husband and an admittedly doting father to his only daughter. His life with his family, though spent almost entirely in space, has been a full and rewarding one as far as he's concerned.
