Background Summary: Vuran Meiru grew up in the suburbs of the Bajoran metropolis Ilvia. Her mother is an Terran botanist from Israel who came to Bajor in the 2390s to help with the redevelopment of areas of the planet devastated during the Cardassian Occupation. What was intended to only be a two-year assignment became permanent after Meiru's mother met her father Tonar, a career officer in the Bajoran Militia. It was Tonar's desire that Meiru follow in his footsteps, and Meiru managed to gain admission to the Rakantha Military Institute, the premier training facility for Bajoran officers. Meiru spent most of her compulsory three years of service following graduation from the Institute guarding a variety of sensitive Bajoran installations such as power plants and military bases. She also spent a three-month term assigned to the Bajoran security force stationed at Deep Space 9, and this was her first introduction to Starfleet. After talking with some of the Starfleet officers on DS9, Meiru realized she wanted to join, and she enrolled in Starfleet Academy when her Bajoran service was complete. Bajorans and Israelis alike are known for their fierce passions and volatile tempers, and Meiru has inherited these traits from both of her parents. The strict discipline of Starfleet Academy required some major adjustments on her part, adjustments she was barely able to make. Indeed, after receiving three reprimands during her plebe year, Meiru was nearly expelled from the Academy. She began to settle down a bit during her second and third years, and really came into her own during her final year of study. Native Israelis have a Hebrew word for themselves: "sabra," which is a type of cactus, prickly on the outside but soft and sweet on the inside. This term can easily be applied to Bajorans as well, and it fits Vuran Meiru to a tee. She would do anything for her close friends and family, and makes friends fairly easily -- but if you should cross her, watch out for that prickly exterior!! IV. Official Starfleet Record: ------------------------------ Chronology: 170701 Entered Starfleet Academy 211201 Graduated Starfleet Academy 211201 Comissioned as Ensign (O-1) 220110 Assigned to Space Warfare Officers School 220415 Graduated Space Warfare Officers School Medals/Commendations: None Previous Military Service (non-Starfleet): 140515 Commissioned as Ensign, Bajoran Militia 151210 Promoted to Lieutenant (junior grade), Bajoran Militia 170430 Resigned commission, Bajoran Militia V. Psychological Profile: ------------------------- "Ensign Vuran seems to be a well-adjusted young woman ready for the trials of a Starfleet career. Due to her previous military service on Bajor, she is somewhat older than the 'traditional' Starfleet Academy graduate. However, I do not expect this to negatively affect her performance." "I've read the reports from her fourth-class year, and know the circumstances which lead to her three reprimands and near-expulsion. I have to say, without reading those reports, I would never have known that this young woman could be so undisciplined. Whatever happened between her plebe year and the present, she appears to have learned to control the wild emotional reactions that nearly ruined her Starfleet career." -- Dr. Susan Lowenstein, Counselor, Starfleet Academy VI. Non-RPG Information: ------------------------ As is the custom among Bajorans, the surname comes first, the given name is listed second. So, with fellow officers who don't know her very well, the appropriate address is "Ensign Vuran." With friends and family, she is addressed as "Meiru." Meiru's physical appearance is a blend of her two cultures. She has the ridged upper nose typical to the Bajorans, but much less prominently than full-blooded members of that race. Her hair is reddish brown, chestnut in bright light. Her eyes are deep brown, almost black. Her complexion is the medium olive color typical to Terrans from the Middle East region. Meiru inherited her spiritual beliefs from her mother. In both the Jewish and Bajoran traditions, spirituality is passed down from the matrilineal side. Meiru's parents have honored that, raising their children according to the practices of Judaism. Despite this, Meiru spent nearly her entire life on Bajor, first in primary schooling, then in the military academy and the Bajoran Militia. She and her family made occasional visits to Earth to visit Miriam's parents, Meiru's grandparents, who live in Jerusalem. During her four years at Starfleet Academy, Meiru was able to spend significant amounts of time in Israel with her grandparents, and indeed to explore more of her mother's home planet. ============================ END OF BIOGRAPHICAL DATAFORM LAST UPDATED: 220511.0420 ============================
