===================== PROPOSAL: p98.01.02 ===================== TITLE: Feature Story to be written on ASR (Full Page Spread) AUTHOR: Mike Tripp SUMMARY: A feature story is to be written on most facets of ASR for publication in the daily paper, "The News-Virginian", located in Waynesboro, Virginia. In addition, the story has the chance of being picked up by a couple of other Virginia based publications. RATIONALE: Even in the best of times, ASR is always on the lookout for and and in need of fresh writers and new recruits to man the billets of ASR. A Feature Article stands the chance of increasing the knowledge of its readers, making them aware of ASR and all that it represents. In turn, membership would increase from that interest in that publication's locality. TEXT: In addition to serving as the delegate for the USS SAM HOUSTON, I also happen to be a representative of the Press in the form of a Freelance Jorunalist. In addition to my full-time profession, I currently sell work as a writer/photographer to the daily paper, News- Viriginan, located in Waynesboro, Virginia, were I live. Recently when approached, the editor for that paper expressed his interest in a possible story written about our ASR after I explained the concept of ASR, what it stands for, it's size, popularity, etc. He has expressed an interest in a full page spread to go in an upcoming, future Saturday or (more likely) Sunday edition. Not only does it deal with Star Trek (other interest to many readers), it also has the aspect of being a different angle that not many of their readers would currently be aware of but would find interesting. Also, it is possible that the News-Gazette in Lexington, Va, and the News-Advance in Charlottesville, VA, may also have an interest in this story. (Contacts thus far show as much.) Star Trek is of a big interest to the public at large as is the the entire concept of the internet community. ASR touches so many persons from all across the globe forging friendships with a common goal based in what we write. I am proud of my ties not just to the SAM HOUSTON, but to all of ASR and such, have a great desire to promote it. What would this artical mean for ASR? It would increase my locality's knowledge and understanding of ASR, letting them know that it/we exist. In my locality, I am the only person that I know of affiliated with ASR. If this is performed correctly, it will not only increase the public's knowledge of our existance, but will also increase the ranks of our members. Simply put, be aware that one of the things that will be covered in this article will be the annual ASR Round Table. Furthermore, only sanctioned information will appear in print. In addition, I would like to clarify as to the specifics of what will be written in the proposed story, clearing up certain issues. When the article comes to the area of ASR's RT, it will more to the point cover the layout, order, and formatlities of the entire process that governs ASR. This practice is one of the cornerstones which allows ASR to be as strong and as lasting as it is. It is what allows our group to be of the size it is, but still function as well as it does outlasting other groups. The article itself will be from the perspective of the writer pulling from personal experiences dealing with the RT. I have a great love for ASR and will not see it hurt. As such (and in keeping with policy when dealing with such feature stories), an advance copy of the article will of course be forwarded to the CINCSF (as well as the Flag Council if felt appropriate) for their review so that ASR is protected, but more so that the facts are completely true and accurate. As a member of the Press and as a journalist, it is by my sworn code of ethics that I have made this body aware of my intentions and standing, as is necessary and required. Safety measures to protect the integrity of ASR and the RT *are* in place.
