B. Background Summary
---------------------

Son of the famous actor Paul Ventura, Chance grew up with a privileged 
lifestyle, even going so far as to follow in his father's footsteps, 
making a couple of action-oriented projects, but his heart just wasn't 
in it.  All he could really find any peace in was SPEED.  

He got into motorcycles and car clubs and learned the ins and out of most 
earthbound passenger vehicles.  After a couple of brushes with the law, 
tarnishing his squeaky clean teen heartthrob image with a couple of 
'errors in judgement', his father enrolled him in Starfleet Academy in 
the hopes that a military lifestyle could curb some of his headstrong 
ways ... as well as keep him from stealing any more cars.

His first year in the Academy was, putting it mildly, ugly.  Not only did 
he barely pass most of his classes, but he almost got himself expelled 
several times for sneaking off campus during restricted hours to 
participate in some illegal street racing.

The start of his second year wrought an interesting change, though.  He 
started it off pretty much the same as his first year, but became 
captivated by a mechanical engineering class he had signed up for with 
just the barest hint of interest.  

The instructor, Alastair Secundus, recognized the passion Chance had for 
vehicles and attempted to take him under his wing, channelling his 
interests into something that Starfleet could utilize.  It was there that 
he discovered that he LOVED to fly and was good at it.  In fact, flying 
became the greatest love of his life, and he began to distinguish himself 
amongst his peers and instructors as a great natural flyer.  He dedicated 
the rest of his Academy time to becoming a pilot and pursued that aim 
slavishly.  

Perhaps a little too slavishly.

Of course, Nova Squadron fell straight into Chance's crosshairs and at 
the beginning of his third year, he applied for membership.  With his 
natural flying talent and passion, it was assumed that he was a shoe-in.  
The Academy gasped collectively when they announced the membership of 
Nova Squadron that year, and the name Chance Ventura was not on the list.  

Barely containing his anger and disappointment, he confronted his 
instructors to find out why he had been denied membership.  To his shock, 
all his instructors had approved his candidacy, except one - Alastair 
Secundus, his mentor and the man who had taught him the joys of flying.

Enraged, Chance struck his mentor and stormed off, but Secundus later 
found him and explained that despite his natural talent and ability for 
flying, it was not enough that he concentrate on JUST that.  He had to 
learn everything else he was being taught, not just piloting.  

After a few discussions and arguments, Chance eventually understood his 
mentor's point of view and agreed to work on the rest of his curriculum 
as hard as he had worked on becoming a pilot.  While the reprimand for 
striking a professor had to stay on the record, it was mitigated by the 
fact that the professor (Secundus) admitted to goading Chance into such 
an action, for a specific reason.  By the middle of the year, he had 
brought the rest of his grades up to the standard he had set for himself 
as a pilot.

Karmically, he was indeed rewarded near the end of the year when one of 
Nova Squadron's pilots was called home from the Academy due to a death in 
the family.  Chance was the unanimously agreed-upon replacement, and so 
despite a rocky third year, ended that year having brought up all his 
grades and he was now the newest member of Nova Squadron.

Chance's final year in the Academy was stellar, a complete turnaround 
from how he came in.  Automatically accepted as a member of Nova Squadron 
for his first 'official' year, he distinguished himself in the field of 
mechanical engineering.  His final project was designing a one-man flier 
that was so advanced that the Academy is considering adapting it to 
retrofit the Nova Squadron fliers.  

While he decided to hit the command track a little late, he has currently 
applied to the USS Hood as Helmsman and plans to continue his studies for 
the eventual command track.

VII. Psychological Profile
==========================

Cadet Chance Ventura is still brash and reckless, but no longer arrogant, 
as I once reported during his entry exam into the Academy.  During his time 
here, I have seen him many times and he has matured from what some would 
describe as a 'spoiled brat' to a highly motivated, focused and talented 
individual.  He is quick to rise to a challenge, but easily goaded into doing 
something foolish, if pushed.  

He posses amazing intuitive ability, that when coupled with his famous 
relexes, make it appear almost like precognition, but I have no evidence to 
prove that he possesses any such mental ability.
