Notes:
The BASTION command battlecruiser variant is a natural outgrowth of the CIRCE-class battlecruiser. The CIRCE was built as a leaner, more maneuverable starship, little bigger than the largest heavy cruisers, but still equipped with the armament of a battlecruiser. However, unlike the larger AGAMEMONON and SOLAR class ships, she was not built with dedicated fleet command and control facilities. The BASTION variant resolved that oversight by reallocation of internal volume to create a dedicated flag bridge and support systems. Externally, there is virtually no way to distinguish a BASTION from any other CIRCE-class space frame. Internally, large portions of deck 9 have been converted to serve the command ship functions. More communications equipment has been added as well as a secondary computer core and an additional small fusion reactor to deal with the added demands of the command center.
Because of the available volume inside the skin of the ship, the displaced crew modules were relocated to redesigned decks 7-11 without significant impact on the pre-existing spaces. These modifications have slightly increased the mass of the ship with the corresponding decrease in normal space performance, but a BASTION is still more maneuverable than the bulkier AGAMEMNON and SOLAR. Her command and control suite is on par with the systems incorporated into the SOLAR II-class command battlecruiser.
The BASTION variant of the CIRCE-class incorporates the same revolutionary new sublight drive introduced on the FEARLESS-calss heavy cruiser. The ship's dimension warp nodes have been modified to serve as the ship's main method of sublight propulsion. This new drive operates by planing gravity in normal space, providing an acceleration potential greater than standard impulse drives. However, available inertial compensator technology is not able to take advantage of the drive's full potential. Effectively, the new drive system bestows a 5% edge in maneuverability and acceleration upon the BASTION variant command battlecruisers, making her handle like an impulse driven ship of only about 4 Mmt. This new drive system is appearing in most new Star Fleet designs as well as being retrofitted into a number of vessel capable of dimension warp. The gravitic dynamic planing drive system uses the hyperspace nodes of the dimensional drive in a secondary mode with limited hardware changes to produce its propulsion effect.
This new variant mounts twenty-four point defense lasers, capable of very rapid fire at close range. The lasers cover all fields of fire, and field tests have shown that these beams much more effective than any existing options for intercepting and destroying incoming missiles and photon torpedoes. The BASTION also is equipped with two intercept drone launchers. These drones emit a signature very much like the ship that they are protecting so that the attacker goes after or at least locks onto them, and not the 'mother ship'.
Finally, the BASTION variant is equipped with Star Fleet's newest phaser systems. The Xg is a modification of the Xf extended range phaser. The Xg uses a variable, multiple gravitic lense system to further increase the precision of beam focus and reduce the loss of the crystaline lenses of the Xf. These beams are much more tightly focused than the standard type X phaser allowing for much greater range, thus providing the option to engage most enemies beyond their energy weapon range. However, the Xg's are not without drawbacks. An advanced targeting or sensor system is required for long range attacks, recharge time is over two times that of the type X, and the power output of the phaser is greatly reduced with range:
100,000 km - 150% type X at similar range |
200,000 km - 109% type X at similar range |
300,000 km - 91% type X at similar range |
350,000 km - 85% peak output of type X at 300,000 km |
400,000 km - 80% peak output of type X at 300,000 km |
450,000 km - 75% peak output of type X at 300,000 km |
The Xg phasers are mounted in ball-shaped turrets that restrict the fields of fire. To handle the Xg phasers power demands, improved high-density phaser capacitors have been incorporated, bestowing greater endurance upon this variant in a sustained engagement. To complement the type Xg phasers, the BASTION variant incorporates six enhanced type XI emitters which improve range over the basic type X for improved standard attack distances. Four XIa enhanced pulse phasers and four torpedo launchers help to round out the ship for multiple tactical situations.
The XIa enhanced pulse phasers were first deployed in hull pods on the NEW ORLEANS Model III (CAVALLA class) light cruisers. The larger size of the battlecruiser allowed a turretted arrangement for the weapon, similar to conventional Xa pulse phaser cannons, but allowing for the enhanced range capabilities of the XIa.
The latest CIRCE variant has had her SCIMITAR tactical system, originally developed for the MONTU class light cruiser, replaced with the RAPIER system which was developed and rested on the FEARLESS-class cruisers. The RAPIER allows for faster and more accurate deployment, targeting and coordination of all weapons and defensive systems during an engagement. It incorporates a new series of tactical sensors, a distributed computing network, advanced software, advanced electronic countermeasures, and all available weapon systems into one integrated package capable of providing tactical dominance greater than the mere ordinance itself would suggest. The replacement of the tactical computer core with the distributed processing system is one of the more significant (and time consuming) aspects of the refit. The use of multiple networked computing nodes reduces the chance that battle damage will disable critical computing functions. All information in the ship's tactical database is replicated no less than three times and the ship is capable of rerouting all weapons control functions so long as at least 50% of the network remains intact.
