B. Background Summary

William Patton was born at a Lunar mining facility where his father was
employed as a miner and his mother was a computer tech. He saw little of
his father during his childhood. His father was always off chasing the next
job, the next pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Patton, however, had a
very close relationship with his mother. She saw to his upbringing and
education. As she moved from position to position, Bill learned each new
computer system his mother was working on. He used those systems to
basically self-educate himself.
At the age of ten, he learned that his father had been killed in a bar-room
fight on Ganymede. His mother died when Patton was sixteen. She was aboard
a shuttle returning to Earth when it was penetrated by a piece of orbital
debris. The shuttle was lost with all hands. Two weeks later, Patton
presented himself to the local Star Fleet recruiting station; and,
lying about his age, he enlisted. He was assigned to Security.
Patton spent the next ten years in the Star Fleet. Naturally he
earned the nickname of "Wild Bill". He found that he enjoyed the
responsibility and adventure of the Service. His ability and intelligence
led to his rapid advancement. By the time of his resignation, he had
attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer with mulitple qualification
certificates. Many of the operations he participated in during this
period of Fleet service are still under secrecy seal. Details are
available to those with appropriate clearance through the Star Fleet
Intelligence Headquarters .
In 2747 Patton met and married his wife, Shania Townsend. Shania was a
nurse at Starbase One. They met while Patton was recovering from severe
wounds incurred during one of the many "peace keeping" operations he
participated in during his service. For a couple of years Patton had
been becoming more cynical about the role the Star Fleet was playing in
"keeping the peace". He was searching for a way to improve the lot of the
average Federation citizen, those who lived and died by the actions of an
authority increasingly out of contact. The death of his wife in childbirth
the following year crystallized his resolve. He resigned from Star Fleet.
Patton took the qualifying exams for the Leonard McCoy Medical
School and scored in the top ten percent. He was admitted to the medical
school at full scholarship and graduated number eight in a class of
two-hundred.
Patton spent the next several years working through the Federation Red Cross
and the Federation Centers for Diseae Control, responding to crisis and
disaster throughout the Federation. He also had some contact with
Federation Intelligence during this period. Another year was spent in
advanced training on the Klingon homeworld at the Imperial School of
Medicine.
Patton came to realize that most of the disasters that required his
attention were not natural, but the result of political and military
decisions and actions. He came to believe that the only way to influence
such events was to be one of those present at the decision-point.
Unfortunately, that meant a return to Star Fleet.
Thanks to his varied postings over the years, Patton had acquired and
maintained a vast network of "old-boy" friends that he could call upon when
needed. With their assistance -- and a high score on the Star Fleet Academy
entrance exams -- he was admitted to Star Fleet Academy.
Patton was the oldest member in his Academy class. Because of his previous
experiences he completed the course work in three years instead of the usual
four years. It was during his final year at the Academy that the data in
the Academy's computer system was replaced with the world's largest porno
collection. The real data was later discovered on the Academy Commandant's
computer system. Star Fleet security officers felt that they knew who

VII. Psychological Profile

Personality:
Patton is very open in social situations. He has a warm and welcoming
manner. He loves teaching and training of his staff and anyone else that he
can get to stand still long enough. His only evidence of hesistation occurs
with those whom he considers too "gung-ho" or too ready to spend the lives
of their crew for too little gain. He is even more vocal about those who
place career advancement above all else. Despite his service and life
history, Patton still retains a sense of wonder. He feels that he has a
responsiblity to leave things a little better tomorrow than they are today.
He goes quietly about his duties, becoming agitated only with
obstructions. Since the death of his wife and child, he had immersed
himself in his work and the dreams/ideals that she often expressed. He
carries a small holo-projected program of her where-ever he is posted. Even
now, many years later, Patton will find himself in tears when he talks about
her and the son who did not survive birth.
He also carries a collection of real-paper books and a small collection of
antique firearms with him on his postings.
In his medical duties, Patton is very attentive and caring toward his
patients. He takes the death of any patient very personally. He has a warm
bedside manner that rarely fails to thaw the most reluctant.
Patton has no medical problems. He is in remarkable physical condition for
a man his age. It is the rare food or drink that he will not try at least
once. This is only one of the influences that remain from his deceased wife.
Patton has been tested by Star Fleet and found to be one of those rare
individuals who are "esper blind". Meaning that telepathic/emphatic
individuals are unable to get any reading/influence from him at all
