> Zane frowned. This day was quickly getting worse. He turned to face Maril and Fobok. "Mr. Charles and I will be little help in<br> > your search for a cure. It will probably be best if he and I begin
to go through this installation. Perhaps we can find some<br> > information that may be helpful."
Fobok started working on the cure, assisted by Maril and the exobiologist.
This was the first time people's lives had depended on his extra training at
Starfleet Medical. Now he was extremely glad he had taken it. The
continued working.
MD 1.1400
Fobok looked over what they had done, "Well, this looks like it, sir."
Maril nodded and extended his arm as Fobok set up the hypo spray. Fobok
noticed this, "Sir, you should not risk your life like this. If I made any
mistake in my calculations, this will speed up the virus in the subject's
body. I shall test it myself."
Before anybody could argue, Fobok injected the cure into himself. He
immeditaely fell to the floor in pain. It hadn't worked. Now he was down
to about one day to live. He tried to speak, but his lungs felt like they
were filled with acid.
Maril started to help Fobok, but realized it wouldn't be much good if he
couldn't find a cure. He got to work..

> Jarren felt his head clear somewhat. He was still a little dizzy, but at  least the pounding had stopped. There, he said, Good as new.<br>

MD: 1.1400<br>
Setting: Runabout NOGURA<br>
She chuckled slightly at his possessive comment, typical of most pilots,
no matter what they were flying at the time. She helped him to his feet,
just standing there for a moment to allow his head to get used to the
quick change in altitude as compared to the floor. His face was kind of
pale, without the very slight green tint that it usually had to it, but
his grey eyes were as alert as ever as he lead the way back to the
forward compartment, Krysa following close behind to catch him should he
fall.
Jerran sat down at the pilot's console, bringing up a diagnostic display
on one of the panels. "Hmmm, no warp core."
"It went on overload," said Jenn. "The computer gave me very few options
but to eject it."
Jerran nodded as he continued to look over the damage report, "Both
nacelles badly damaged." He grinned at her and said, "Undoubtedly
through the liberal application of a giant rock on the undercarriage."
Jenn blushed slightly as Jerran turned back to his panel and said, with
good humor, "Remind me when we get back to the FEYNMAN to schedule some
holodeck time to give you a crash course in crashing."
"Let's see. Impulse drive. Doesn't look like any physical damage to
it. Some particulate dust in the coolant intakes, but that's a simple
matter to back flush it. Why won't it start?"
His nose wrinkled a bit more than usual as he thought about it for a
moment as he scanned the redout. Jenn pointed over his shoulder at
something saying, "There, it's the fusion initiation laser. It must have
been knocked out in the fight."
Jerran raised an eyebrow and said, "You're right." He continued tapping
away at the control panel and then said, "Ah, here we go. We still have
some anti-matter left. We can send a little bit of that into the fusion
reactant chambers along with the normal deuterium fuel. It'll cause a
sizeable explosion which may just provide enough energy to initiate the
fusion reaction."
Jenn looked down at him with a surprised and worried look on her face,
"It may also initiate our inevitable destruction. Are you sure that was
designed to do that?"
"No," he said, grinning at her in a sly manner, "but that doesn't mean
that it hasn't been done before."
She sat back down at her seat next to him, still worried about an
obviously risky solution. Jenn really did not want to become a second
star in this system. She then looked at the scanner display, and
her worries increased tenfold. "It doesn't look like we have much of a
choice, Terri. There's another asteroid that's about 5 minutes away from
this one on a collission course."
Jerran took in a deep breath and said, "Well, then. It's now or never."

Lt. Commander Maril continued to try to find out what had gone wrong in
Ensign Fobok's cure and how to counteract it.
"Ahh...here we go. Hopefully, this will be enough to guide Mr. Fobok through
the forest." He took the hypospray and injected the antidote into Fobok's
blood. Almost immediately, there was an improvement.
"You're doing well, Mr. Fobok. I am not a doctor, but your body appears to
be holding the virus in check," Maril remarked.
"But you, sir. You need some of it, too."
"Don't worry, Mr. Fobok. I saved some for the entire away team." Just then, the lights brightened and the consoles came to life. Maril tapped on his communicator. "Maril to Zane. I assume you have been able to bring main power on line, sir."
[That is correct.]
"Good. Maybe we can get to the bottom of this now. Maril out." However, as he turned to the nearest console, the lights suddenly redimmed and the exobiologist, who had walked to the other side of the room, yelled out, "Sir, we've lost power. The virus containment field is failing!"
It didn't take very long for Maril to make a decision. "Everyone out! Mr.
Fobok, take all of the antidote that has been made. Make sure it gets to Lt.
Commander Zane."
"But, sir...."
"That's an order, Mr. Fobok."
As the others ran out of the room, Maril set up a high-intensity forcefield
that would activate 15 seconds after the program was initiated. As he wasn't
sure that even that would keep them in, he set the environment controls to go
to 550 degrees Celsius at the same time. Everything would probably melt, but
it was a small price to pay for keeping the viruses away.
He initiated the program and started running towards the door. He was two
steps away when the containment field failed. He, was, however, able to get
out of the room before anything else happened. As he ran down the corridor, he
heard the water in different materials boiling and other things melting.
Somewhere on the Command Level, he simply collapsed on the floor.

Fobok followed the order, and ran out, even though he was still weak, with
the exobiologist. He then ran as fast as he could toward where Zane was, in
the CIC. It took him a few moments of searching, but he finally found it
using the tricorder and the signal from Zane's communicator.

He then ran in, and handed him the cure, "Sir, this is it..but we've got to
go back there..or even just me. The containment field around the viruses
failed, Commander Maril's still back there.."
He then stood waiting for orders.

Jerran wasn't too surprised when Jenn told him that the FEYNMAN wasn't on
their sensors. They had been heavily damaged in the asteroid belt, and
the FEYNMAN's anti-reflective coating would make it almost invisible to
the NOGURA's impaired sensors. Jerran was surprised, however, when they
received the hail.
<Prepare yourselves. The end is near.>
It was omnious and foreboading enough, but Jerran only found it amusing
as he had though there wasn't supposed to be any intelligent life in this
part of space.
He looked over at Jenn and said, "I guess we'd better send a response."
She tapped the comm panel on her console and said, "You're on."
He raised an eyebrow, obviously not wanting to be the one to talk, but
deciding that seeing as though he was supposed to be in charge of this
part of the mission, that it would be his responsibility.
"This is Ensign Jerran Terel of the Federation Starship FEYNMAN. We are
here on..."
Before he could finish, he was interrupted by the same ominous message,
<Prepare yourselves. The end is near.>
He stopped talking and Jenn shut off the communications. "It's some sort
of a recorded message," he said.
Jenn nodded and said, "Maybe that in conjunction with those energy ships
we ran into were put into the system as some sort of automated security
system to keep prying ships out of the area."
"Can you trace the source of the transmission?"
Jenn tapped at her panel saying, "I'll try. It seems like the comm system
was the only think that I didn't destroy in the crash."
Jerran grinned sardonically and said, "You'll just have to try harder
next time, then."
She gave him a playfully mean look and said, "Here it is. The
transmission iminated from the moon base where Commander Zane's away team
went."
"Well, we aren't going to be able to find the FEYNMAN without sensors and
with our communications channels being jammed, so I guess we should just
make way towards the moon and check up on Commander Zane."
"Who knows," Jenn said, trying to sound reassured, "maybe the FEYNMAN's
waiting there for us."
The ship groaned slightly in protest as Jerran brought the impulse drive
slowly up to full power, heading towards the moon. As his head started
punding again from the wound, he knew exactly how it was feeling. The
drugs must have been wearing off, but he wasn't about to tell Krysa
that. He erected a small mental shield, just enough to hide the pain,
but not enough that she might get suspisious that he was blocking her
again, and went on flying the NOGURA.
<NRPG>
Kristen: I figure it'll take about 20 minutes to get to the moon from the
asteroid belt. I was thinking that we might find the FEYNMAN on the way
there, maybe in the middle of a battle with one of those energy ships.
Do what you want, though :) Oh, and BTW, thanks for rebouncing your last
post. My mail server must have been on the fritz, or something :P

Zane and the historian, Ensign McGivers entered the last
unexplored room on the level. The entrance way was somewhat removed
from the others and, unlike everywhere else they had been, was preceded by
a 20 foot corridor that was exposed to the moon rock. As they entered
the differences continued.
Zane slowly turned to look at all the equipment. "Ensign, this
is much different than everything else we have seen thus far. Suggestions?"
"I have come across this technology before. It is definitly not
the same as the rest of the moonbase."
"Do you know whose it may be?" Zane asked.
"I could not say which race, specifically, but it is difinitly an
offshoot of a larger 'parent' civilization, the Briglen." McGivers
replied as she scanned her tricoder over any writing she could find.
"The Briglen? I'm not sure I ever heard of them." Zane asked as
he went from display screen to display screen trying to decipher what he
was seeing.
"The Briglenian League existed about 500,000 to 600,000 years ago
and at its highpoint is believed to have been about half the size of the
Federation. We don't know if they died out, were conquered, assimilated
by other cultures or even if they still exist. Unfortunately we have
never discovered a Briglen world. We have found numerous outposts and
observatories such as this one and from there have been able to determine
the rest."
Zane was a little confused. "Are you saying this room is all
they built here? Why?"
"Yes, it seemed the Briglen were explorers much as ourselves.
Like us when they found an inhabited planet below a certain level
they would set up a covert base to monitor it. We have found bases of
this nature throughout the Federation, and the Romulan and Klingon Empires."
"So whoever built this moonbase was being quietly watched by the
Briglen and they happened to stumble across this room. Ensign, the
equipment in this base can't be anymore than 1000 to 1500 years old."
"Yes sir it is a miraculous find." McGiver's replied enthusiastically.
"Well then, are we able to decipher their writings?"
"I believe so sir. If you could just access the computer from
that workstation there I will feed a translation program into the
mainframe here."
Zane sat where he was directed and stared at the screen for a few
seconds. Deciding that the middle box on the screen was the proper one.
He touched it lightly with his finger. Nothing. Undaunted he tried
another and was met with the same fate. A few more tries. "Uh, Ensign..."
"Oh sorry sir." McGivers replied smiling "You have to use those
buttons in front of you, the keyboard, until I feed the program in.
After that we can hook the tricorder right into it and use it as an
interface."
Zane looked down, cracking his knuckles. "Keyboard. How quaint."

Krysa wasn’t happy about Ens. Jarren’s latest idea. However, if they
didn’t try it they would definitely be destroyed when the two asteroid’s
collided. She wished there was another solution, but there wasn’t any
time to come up with one.
“Okay, just do it then. Don’t let me think about it anymore.”
Jarren set to work deciding on the right mix of anti-matter and
deuterium fuel. “Hold on.” he said as fingers began to dance across the
panel in front of him. The runabout rocked and shook until Krysa
thought it was going to come apart at the seams. “Ha!” shouted Jarren.
“We’ve done it! Here we go...”
The runabout lifted of the surface of the asteroid and headed out into
the asteroid field. Jarren again set to work dodging asteroids, and
within a few minutes they were out of the asteroid belt.
“Signal the FEYNMAN. Tell them we are coming in.”
She tried to call up the FEYNMAN. After a moment of hailing, Jenn looked
at Jerran and said, "I still can't get through." She looked at her
sensors, scanning for the Starship. I can’t find the ship. Where did
they go?”
She continued to search with sensors for the missing ship. “I know they
weren’t jus.... Uh, Terri... we are being hailed... It is on a very
strange frequency.”
Jarren looked over at Jenn’s panel. “Who’s hailing us?”
“I don’t know. There aren’t any ships on sensors.” She paused. “Well,
only one way to tell..” Krysa turned back to her console and began
hitting buttons.
<Prepare yourselves, the end is near.>
Regards,
Lt.(j.g.) Krysa Jenn

The runabout had reached the moon and Jarren was putting her into orbit.
Jarren looked at her. “We need to think about this. Let’s see if we can
put something’s together.”
“You’re right. I have been doing some thinking since we got that
recorded message. If what we encountered was an automated security
system, why is it only attacking us in the asteroid belt. Why isn’t it
attacking us now?”
“You have an idea?” Jarren asked
“Well, only that maybe the moon base is a part of the security system.
In other words, a lure to keep intruders away from the real ‘prize’.
Maybe what is actually being protected, is *in* the asteroid belt.”
“Interesting theory. Try hailing the Feynman”
Krysa nodded, and turned back to her panel, “Still no sign of the
Feynman. I’m going to hail the away team.” Krysa began trying to hail
them. “Runabout Nogura to Away Team, do you read me?”
[Zane here. Where are you?]
“We are in orbit around the moon, Sir. There is no sign of the Feynman,
but we are pretty badly damaged, so sensors might not be working.
However, they aren’t answering any hails either.”
Regards,<br>
Lt.(j.g.) Krysa Jenn<br>
<br>
NRPG: I really didn’t know what was up with the FEYNMAN, so I didn’t
want to make them close if they weren’t. But they could pop up at
anytime.... I mean our sensors are pretty badly damaged.<G> Of course
that couldn’t be Krysa’s fault could it??
Joe, I don’t know what you want to do now. Either wait for Andy to post
something from Zane, or what. I think it might be time to start pooling
some info though. At any rate, I pass along the “ball”<G>

information as possible. Fobok your with me." The two officers rushed
from the room, hoping they would be in time to save Maril.

The two officers arrived in time to see the CSO pulling the
unconscious OPS officer from the room.
"Report." Zane ordered as Fobok crouched beside Maril, running
his tricorder over him.
"I got here about 30 seconds ago and found Commander Maril lying
in the middle of the room. I pulled him out and you arrived."
Fobok stood and ran the tricorder quickly over Jordon. "You seem
to be in good health lieutenant."
"And Maril." Zane asked.
"There is nothing I can do for him here. We must get him back to
the ship."
"Zane to FEYNMAN...Zane to FEYNMAN...Come in FEYNMAN we have a
medical emergency." Zane turned to the other officers. "It seems we
have another problem."
"Perhaps if return to the surface where we originally beamed down
we would have a better chance of being heard." Fobok suggested.
"Good idea. Lieutenant Charles, return to the CIC and aid
McGivers. We'll return there as soon as possible."

Scene: Moonbase, beam-down point.
As the small group emerged from the elevator Zane's commbadge
came to life. [Nogura to Away Team.]
Smiling with relief at Fobok he replied. "Zane here go ahead."
For the next few seconds both filled each other in on their
current status. As was quickly becoming the norm things were growing
much worse. "Do you have enough power to transport Maril up to the
Nogura?" Zane asked.
[Affirmative.] the counselor replied.
"Good. You have more medical equipment then us. Energize."

Just a short one to patch a few things together. I have no idea where
any of this is going but I'm looking forward to finding out. It seems we
have 1)a missing starship 2)an almost powerless runabout 3)an ominous
force 4)an ancient moonbase 5)a secret observatory from an ancient but
advanced race spying on the moonbase 6) an infected second officer
Hmmmmm. Where do we go from here:)
Respectfully submitted,<br>
