Notes:
The STORM class was designed for endurance and speed. This class of long
range recognizance and rapid responce ship was built to test advances in warp
field geometry and warp core design. The new ship is fast and agile.
Although a few ships are faster than the STORM-class ships, they can
outdistance any of the other ships in the fleet because of their increased
enduranc at moderately high speed.
The basic design was derived from a new warp field geometry. The low profile
field geometry, while of limited use in larger ships is perfect for this light
cruiser. The new configuration give this class starship greater
maneuverability at warp speeds and higher acceleration factors. Limitations in
inertial compensators unfortunatelyt limit the ship to only marginally higher
accellerations compared to other ships of her size. However, the fact that the
STORM-class ships are small for cruisers means that their inertial compensators
allow them significantly higher accelerations than those of the larger cruisers.
The ships primary hull (saucer section) is a large flat oval shape that uses
the maximum amount of space available within the new warp field geometry.
There are separation devices between the primary and secondary hull,
which allow for separation and reattachment. The secondary hull (Drive
Section) extends back from the aft section of the primary hull and contains
most of engineering and warp drive systems. The impulse engines were
placed to provide the maximum force against the center of the ship's mass.
This increases maneuverability at impulse velocities. The warp nacelles
extend below the secondary hull on ether side.
The main sensor array has been placed on the forward most part of the
primary hull. It is enclosed inside an outer hull shell for added protection
from small impact bodies. This shell can be removed for maintenance and
refit.
A hard point below the secondary hull allows the mounting of several different
kinds of devices including cargo pods, electronic counter measures, and sensors.
This is simalar to the multimission pod of the HOOD-class cruisers, but it much
smaller. It is generally used to mount sensors that are interfered with by the
hull plating and will not function properly when mounted with the main sensor
cluster. Unlike the HOOD, all power for the pod is provided by links to the
main EPS system and there are direct power feeds to this point. Amoung other
things, this means that phaser weapons mounted in the pod do not have
independent capacitor banks and power sources. This creates limited firing
durations which make such weapons basically ineffectual. The limited size of
the pods also means that ordinance storage for photon torpedoes is extremely
limited.
Some experiements to mount HOOD-type weapons pods on STORM-class cruisers have
been conducted. However, these experiments have met with poor results because of
fundamental incompatabilities in the designs of the two pods systems.
While not the fastest ship class, the STORM cruisers can sustain high warp
velocities for longer periods of time. For instance, GALAXY-class starships
sustaining a warp factor of 9.6 for 12 hours before core meltdown, while the
STORM class can hold the same speed nearly indefinitely. At present, there is
a power drop off after warp 9.9.
