Felony criminal investigations are one of the four core mission areas of the Service. SFSECIS is the investigative entity within Star Fleet and responsible for major criminal investigations involving Star Fleet and SF Marine service members, and affiliated civilian personnel. SFSECIS civilian Field Agents have the authority to investigate criminal acts in accordance with both the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and established criminal laws under the United Federation of Planets when there is a jurisdictional overlap.
SFSECIS is, essentially, the Star Fleet law enforcement unit that investigates felony-level offenses. Typically, Agents will investigate allegations from or against members of Star Fleet, SF Marines, and civilians assigned to either service or those who were victims of such crimes within the investigative scope of the SFSECIS.

Field Agents initiate and lead criminal investigations when the punishment for the offense is confinement of more than one year in a rehabilitation facility; lesser crimes and infractions that are not Court Martial offenses are handled under the authority of the unit’s Commanding Officer in accordance with the UCMJ Article 15. This is called ‘Captain’s Mast’ in Star Fleet or ‘Office Hours’ for SF Marines.
Field Agents use intelligence gathering, detective methodologies and forensic analysis to investigate suspected/alleged criminal activity and to provide counterterrorism and counterintelligence support for all Star Fleet component service units. If the facts support probable cause that a crime or incursion has been committed, Agents are authorized to make arrest(s) and file charges with the appropriate Star Fleet Divisional JAG (COMJAGDSO).

Within Star Fleet, SFSECIS is the only unit authorized to conduct investigations into actual, potential or suspected acts of espionage, sabotage, and intelligence activities conducted on behalf of Foreign Intelligence Entities (FIEs) on Star Fleet service component installations.
