This is part of the reason as well that with his advanced age, 45 Terran Earth years of age, he still retains the rank of Lieutenant when many other career minded 'Fleeters are either LtCmdr or Cmdr by this time.
Personality Characteristics:
To say that Jacen has seen much of the negative side of life would be an understatement.  While he does possess a somewhat genial bedside manner, his approach towards attending his patients can be summed up by considering one incident that occurred during a relief mission to a fringe Starfleet colony.
When treating the colony's governor who had been at ground zero during a terrorist attack on the seat of the government, while holding a makeshift tourniquet on a bleeding artery in an attempt to keep the governor from literally bleeding to death in med bay, Jacen is quoted as telling his patient, "You are not going to die.  Oh, hell no.  Not on one of my beds.  I will tie your old [expletive censored] to the warp core in order to bring you back.  Then you might die, but not for want of me trying!"
His divorce has left him somewhat bitter, but he remains optimistic about the goals of Starfleet and his devotion to saving the lives of his patients and maintaining the health of his crew are second to none.
There is one exception though.  When asked to discuss his past, particularly the research he was part of prior to his service on Starships, he remains distant, aloof and very tight lipped.  It is believed that his choice to serve on starships which came shortly after his work on Classified 'Fleet research ended, may have been prompted by something he did, saw, or witnessed during his time as a researcher.
