Notes:
The EISENHOWER-class assault landing ship is one of the largest ships in
the Federation inventory. While primarily used for peacekeeping missions,
this ship has the capacity to deploy large number of troops to a combat
zone rapidly.
Capably of carrying a full regiment of marines, the ship has several
deployment options. She is, of course, equipped for transporter
deployment of troops. Beam-in would normally be by battalion, but she has
the capacity to transport all troops and equipment in three cycles if
needed. Since it may be ill-advised or impossible to use transporter
deployment in a combat zone, she carries enough standard dropsships and
armored cargo shuttles to deploy the entire regiment, with equipment, in
as few as two landings. Such landings would be covered by her small
complement of fighter and assault shuttles, craft whose normal role is
close air support for ground troops.
In situations where orbital time must be strictly limited, such as when
planetary batteries can be employed to target the troopships, the
EISENHOWER class carry single-use troop capsules. These units are more
like escape pods with ablative armor than anything else. Since their life
support systems are intended to last only until the pod lands, they have a
capacity of 25 beings. This type of landing is hard on both personnel and
equipment and often is the cause of significant numbers of casualties from
capsules which fail to soft land on their repulsors. Therefore, it is
generally used only when absolutely necessary.
