Scene: Deck 7, Impulse Drive<br>
"Hand me that hydro spanner, would you, Mendorn?" Jerran said, his upper
half sticking up into an access port on the impulse reactor with a hand
out for the tool.
"Of course, LT," the Benzite pilot said as he took a breath from the
breather at his chest and handed the FCO the tool. He then walked over to
the access to the impulse drive's subspace driver coil and began working
on it.
"I'm glad that we had this opportunity to work together again, Mendorn, I
just wish that the Prophets had seen fit to place us under better
circumstances for your first mission."
"Indeed, sir," Mendorn said softly as he closed off the panel and walked
to a nearby control console. "However, I'm sure that we will make it
through this one."
Jerran nodded with a smile as he slid out of the reactor, a smudge of dark
greese on the side of his face. "Of that, I have no doubt, Ensign. Now,
let's see if we can turn this back on."
The FCO walked over to the control console and began manipulating the
controls to start up the reactor. A loud humm began to fill the room as
the reactor's laser fusion initiation system began firing at the slush
deuterium as it was injected into the reactor.
"Reactor power output to 10 percent and rising, LT."
"Good, Mendorn. Keep an eye on the internal pressure. If we have a
spike, this whole deck could go."
"Aye, sir. Reactor power at 30 percent and rising. Internal pressure
holding steady." Mendorn took a deep breath from his artificial
atmosphere and said, "Sir, can I ask you a question?"
"Of course," Jerran said absentmindedly as he concentrated on the reactor.
"Lieutenant Cartwright, she's someone special to you, no?"
Jerran smiled slightly and said, "Yes, she's someone very special to me."
"Then not knowing where she is must be very hard for you, then, sir. I
must say that your Vulcan emotional controls have much improved since your
days at the academy."
Jerran nodded as he glanced at the Benzite and said, "She and I have been
performing extensive mind melds ever since we first started our
relationship. Because of that, even though she is off the ship, I still
sense her. It's true that I don't know exactly where she is, but I know
she is out there, and I'm sure she knows I'm still here."
Mendorn nodded as he looked back down at his console, "Reactor output at
90 percent and rising steadily. Internal pressure is nominal."
Jerran brought the reactor up to a hundred percent slowly, and then sent
the output plasma through the impulse drive system. "Everything looks
fine here."
"Yes, sir. What do we need to work on next?"
"Thruster system. I told Allard to keep his security teams away from that
because I wanted to take a look at it personally. And, I want only you
and I on this, because I think that whoever sabotaged them might have been
in my own department."
"He's a flight controller, sir? Do you know who he could be?"
"Not yet, but I do have a few posibilities."
The two officers left the impulse drive system working almost as good as
new as they went to work on the thrusters.
<NRPG>
BTW, there're five people out in the shuttles, Cartwright, Dunnon,
Harkone, Sirana, and Alera.
