"It seems our best option but our prime concern is to get this
cure back to EPSILON. If the Cardassians attack we'll execute your
manoeuver up to and including a spread of torpedos. But after that we get
the hell out of here and make a bee-line for the mystery task force out
on the sidelines." Zane noticed the almost imperceptable frown that
briefly flashed across Jerran's face. He sympathized, the idea of running
from a fight seemed wrong. "We might get lucky and be able to do some
real damage to those two monsters but in the long run...it'd only be a
matter of time."
"Understood. What about the away team?"
"Its my guess that the Cardassian's won't make any move on us
until they are all back aboard. That way they are assured of no survivor's
and keeping the cure for themselves."
"Captain, couldn't we just side-step all of this by contacting
the task force and requesting their support before the Cardassians pull
the trigger?"
"That idea seems to make the most sense and everything I've been
taught points to that conclusion but every instinct in me is screaming not
to. They're hanging out there on the edge of our sensors watching but
they know we can see them and the Cardassian's can't. If they wanted to
provide support they could move a little closer. Surely the Cardassain's
wouldn't be foolish enough to try to attack us then."
"So what are they doing out there?"
"Well if the Cardassian's attack us we might, knowing we had
substantial reinforcements, stay and fight. And in the battle we could
very well be destroyed and then they waltz in and decimate Katane...."
"...and then the mystery ships beam down to the Ring and
examine the Luddites we ahve cured and they have the cure." He finished
the thought. "But they are Starfleet vessels! You can't be
suggesting..."
"But who's are they? They're definitly not SILVER and I can't see
any of our neighbouring fleets loaning us 4 capital ship just to drift.
Besides even if they did Admiral Nicholas wouldn't keep us in the dark and
he certainly would park them over the horizon. They'd of come barrelling
in here at warp nine and parked themselves on the Cardassian's backsides."
He shook his head. "No it just feels wrong. And if it turns out that
we're being overly parnoid, it'll mean they come on the scene before the
fight begins and we spent a few hours worrying for nothing."
"What about inoculating the Ring? We can't very well be deploying
shuttles if the Cardassians are planning to attack. And since they know
that is our plan they'll probably hold their fire until we're in the
middle of flight operations. I would."
Zane nodded in agreement. "Makes sense. The retrieval of the
away team will be the catalyst. Either they attack or they don't. If
they do were ready for them. If they don't we tell them we're going to
join up with our task force because it will be a much more efficent way
to spread the cure. And as an added protection as soon as we enter warp
we start sending the cure and our findings to EPSILON on every sub-space
frequency we can. Once the cat's out of the bag I think the danger will
defuse itself."
Satisfied with their options but disquieted with some of the
ramifications both men returned to the bridge. Jerran resumed his
post and Zane filled Koreth in on the coming plan.

Scene: USS FEYNMAN, Main Shuttlebay<br>
LTJG Jerran Terel and Midshipman Talo stepped on board the Runabout NOGURA
as the rest of the pilots settled into their shuttlecraft. Jerran touched
a comm pad on the control panel and said, "NOGURA to Bridge. Inform the
Cardassians that we are beginning launch operations now."
<Confirmed, NOGURA. You are clear to launch.>
Jerran closed the line and turned to the Cadet and smiled reassuringly to
him. "All shuttles, stay on my six once we've cleared the bay."
<Roger that, Lieutenant,> came Jennifer Cartwright's voice over the comm.
After Talo brought the ships impulse engines up to full power, Jerran
deftly flew the runabout out of the shuttlebay and into the empty space
above the ring. He looked over to port and starboard to see the flights
of shuttles coming out of the Cardassian ships and decided everything was
going as planned. Tapping the comm pad again he said, "All shuttles, this
is LTJG Jerran. Prepare to deploy on my mark. Cardassian shuttles, break
off and regroup with your assigned FEYNMAN shuttles for deployment. Let's
move out."
About twenty shuttlecraft were now flying over the Ring, some of them
pulling into formation with each other. A pair of Cardassian shuttles
came up to flank the NOGURA, escorting the FCO's ship to the far edge of
the Ring. After they had all formed up on their respective wings, the
shuttles activated their warp drive for the short journey to their
assigned destinations.
After a few minutes, Jerran ordered Talo to shut down the warp drive and
bring up the impulse drive for sublight maneuvering. Talo nodded and
complied with the order saying, "Controls seem kind of sluggish. Must be
a glitch in the control interface."
Jerran nodded and said, "Just as long as it holds together till we're
through here, and we'll be fine."
<Beta squad to Alpha squad.> Jennifer said over the comlink. <All squads
are formed up and in position.>
"Good. Jerran to FEYNMAN. We can begin operations." Over to the sides
of the runabout, Jerran noticed that the Cardassian shuttles were getting
somewhat close. That's when he noticed two small projectiles moving
outwardfrom each of the shuttles. He tried to dodge them, but the
runabout was too slow for such a maneuver. The incoming torpedoes struck
amidship as he took her into a roll, two striking each on the top and
bottom. The explosion sent the ship whirling toward the ring.
"Inertial dampeners offline!" Talo shouted through the whine of wrenching
metal. "Warp reactor core failure imminent!"
Jerran tapped at his console, trying to hold on despite the high G forces
of the turn. "Manual release is inoperative. She's going to..."
Just then, the runabout exploded into a million fragmants floating in a
large cloud of plasma above the ring. The other FEYNMAN shuttles were
having similar fates as their Cardassian "allies" opened fire on them.
After the dust had settled, LTJG Jerran looked over at Midshipman Talo, WO
Dunnon, Midshipman Kaz, ENS Cartwright, Midshipman Alera, Midshipman
Serana, and WO Austin, all framed by the yellow glowing grid of the
holodeck.
"Wooowee!" yelled the Texan pilot with a smile. "I'd say they took the
bait like an armidillo takes to a busy highway!"
Jerran allowed hismelf a slight smile, still not understanding the
Terran's humor, and said, "I'd say you're right, if I knew exactly what
you meant. Now, I'd better get up to the bridge. I have a feeling all
hell is about to break loose, as you would say, Tex."
"Damned tootin', pardner! I mean, sir."
"The rest of you get to your emergency posts."
The all filed quickly out of the holodeck as Jerran ran for the bridge.
When he got there, CMDR Zane looked over to him as he walked over to his
place at the helm. "How'd it go, Lieutenant?"
"Rather well, sir. The Cardassians attacked the shuttles, just as
planned. Had I not been slowed, however, by the bad connection between
the holodeck and the remote operations on the NOGURA, then I might have
been able to save her."
"Something tells me that the Cardassians wouldn't have appreciated that,
Mr. Jerran. It would have ruined their plans immensely, which we will do
anyway.. They called just before you got up here saying that there was
some sort of malfunction in the interface between our transporters and
theirs, and that their people have reported that our shuttles have all
lost communications in addition to warp drive failure."
"At least they aren't lying, sir. It was the warp drive failure that
caused the destruction of the shuttles, eventually. And, it would be
somewhat difficult for me to open communications with you when I am dead."
"Certainly. Bridge to transporter room. Begin beaming up the landing
parties. Mr. Jerran, I hope your warp jump is ready."
"Yes, sir, it is," the pilot said, looking back at the CEO standing at the
engineering console for a second. "But Mr. Koreth and I have run into a
minor obstacle."
The commander looked back to the engineer as the Klingon said, "We will
have to divert more of our power to the IDF and SIF fields, so shields
will be unavailable for five seconds after the maneuver is complete."
The captain nodded as the FCO said, "But, that shouldn't be a problem, as
I anticipate that we will be out of the area before the Cardassians take
another shot at us."
"Well, let's just hope it works."
<Transporter room to bridge. The last of the landing parties is beaming
up now...>

UY- It didn't look good.
Luckily, the Cardassians had a placebo, not the real cure. However, a
Feynman-class vessel against *two* Cardassian warships was not good odds, to say the
least.
On top of that, the probability of spreading the cure, now that the Cardassians were turned against them, was slim (unless, of course, the Cardassians let them spread it).
Maril had been working on a few options to use, but he put them down as Dr. Glin'kharr staggered into the tent.
"Doctor," Maril said, concerned, "are you sure you should be moving around when you were given the cure just an hour ago?"
"Please, Commander," Glin'kharr growled, "I am fine. Besides, I have to make some use of myself."
"Very well," Maril replied. "But I want you to report back to the medical tent immediately if you have any sign of relapse."
"Of course, Commander."
As Glin'kharr left the tent, Maril tapped his communicator. "Maril to Jenn. Please report to Command Tent immediately."
[I'll be there soon, sir.]
True to her word, Lt. Jenn was there soon after. Maril offered her a seat and Jenn sat down across the table from Maril.
"So, Lieutenant, you are aware of the current situation?"
"Yes, sir, I am."
"Well, do you have any thoughts?"
"Well, I think we may need reinforcements. Two Cardassian warships against the Feynman isn't very even."
"My thoughts exactly. Why the Captain has not called for any escapes me at the moment. Anything else?"
"No, not much else, sir."
"Well, I have an idea or two that may distract the Cardassians. However, our main project at the moment is getting the camp 'packed' and ready to beam up. All the tents must be folded down and the equipment must be organized. I do not know when we are beaming up, but I want to be ready when we do. I want you to work on getting tents, food supplies, and other essentials ready. I will be organizing the technology and related equipment. Is that all understood?"
"Understood, sir."
"Good. Get to work," Maril ordered.
For the next twenty minutes or so, Maril, along with several other officers and crew, organized all of the technological equipment, from scanning equipment to medical instruments to transporter pads. Maril knew that Lt. Jenn was doing the same thing, getting all of the essentials ready for beamup.
At 1300 hours, with one more section to go, there was a voice through his commnicator. [Feynman to Commander Maril. We're ready to beam you up now.]
"Understood. Groups will be at the beam-up spot in a few minutes."
[Understood, sir. Feynman out.]
Maril stood at the middle of most of the officers now. He yelled, "Now, I want all the medical, security and half of the science team to report directly to the beam-up spot. Lieutenant Jenn will organize you there. You are done with your portion, Lieutenant, correct?"
Jenn nodded and Maril took half of the science team with him to finish the organization, the rest of the huge away team heading over to the beamup spot.
"Keep working. We're almost done," Maril tried to keep the team's sporits up.
Finally, approximately five minutes later, all of the equipment had been organized. It was amazing to see all the mounds of supplies and groups of equipment.
"Maril to Feynman. Last team is ready to beam up."
[Understood, sir. Energizing...now.]
The familiar feel of the ACB surrounded him, and seconds later, he was standing on the transporter pad in Transporter Room 2 of the USS Feynman.
Confident that the equipment and supplies would be beamed aboard in time, Maril headed for the Bridge.

USS Feynman:Bridge
Maril walked onto the Bridge and headed down to his familiar seat next to the Captain. Lieutenant Jenn was already there. Somehow, though it had only been two days, it seemed like it had been forever since he had been on that Bridge.
"The mouse heading into the bear's cave," Maril whispered as everyone waited for the next move in this huge chess match where the board was the whole quadrant and the Feynman was but a pawn.

Krysa had gone directly from the transporter room to the bridge to replace
her AOPS, who had been surely pulling double duty while so many of the
Operations department had been down on the ring. She felt several pairs of
eyes on her as she stepped off the turbolift, but didn't allow that to
stop her.
Garrett looked up from Ops and stood to allow Krysa to take her seat. She
placed a hand on the young woman's shoulder before quietly leaving the
bridge. Krysa didn't acknowledge the gesture. She had neither the time or
the energy for that. Now they had to face two Cardassian Warships that
wanted to blow them out of the stars, and she couldn't be distracted.
She barely even noticed when Commander Maril walked onto the bridge, as
she watched the Cardassians on her scanners.
"Sir, they're firing!" she shouted as she saw her panel light up.
"Brace for impact!" shouted Zane. "Mr. Jerran..."
"Ready, sir," called Jerran his fingers flying over his panel. Krysa
prepared for the impact that never came. For an instant she felt like only
part of her body was still with her and the rest had been left...
somewhere.
The viewscreen became a blur of stars rushing by them.
As the regular gravitational systems of the FEYNMAN began to catch up with
the stresses Mr. Jerran had just put the ship through, Krysa began to feel
like herself again rather then a long stretched body. She looked over at
the FCO, "You know you could have warned me you were turning this ship
into a taffy puller."
"Where would the fun be in that?" He said with a grin and a twinkle in his eye.
"Status," ordered Zane. Everyone's eyes flew back to their stations.
"The Cardassian's are giving chase, but we took them unprepared," smiled Jerran.
"Sir there are four large federation ships moving toward the Cardassians,"
said Krysa with a hint of surprise in her voice. "The Cardassians are
giving up the chase."
"Indeed, Lt. I'm glad to here that," said Zane with a smile. "I think we
can slow to impulse now, Lt. Jerran."
"Aye, sir."
"Sir, we're being hailed by the USS PHOENIX, under the command of Captain
Tremaine," Krysa reported.
"On screen, Lt."
<nowiki><Congratulations, Commander Zane,> said the slightly balding man on the
viewscreen. <We are glad to see that you and your ship are unscathed></nowiki>
"As are we Captain Tremaine."
<nowiki><I don't think you will have to worry about the Cardassians causing any
problems now. They have agreed to head home.> Krysa could feel Tremaine's
disappointment under his diplomatic demeanor.</nowiki>

Scene: Wandering the ship<br>
MD: 5.1730<br>
Krysa had stayed at her station on the bridge until Reetza had come to
replace her at the end of Alpha shift. She hadn't really wanted to leave,
but couldn't come up with a good excuse to stay. So she had left, not
quite sure where to go.
She headed to her office first thinking perhaps she could do some PADD
work in there. That was a pretty safe neutral location. Unfortunately, she
found several workmen in her office.
"What going on here?" she demanded.
One of the men stood, "We are remodeling this office as ordered, sir."
"Who ordered?"
The man looked a bit flustered, "uh, well... I don't know exactly, I just
was told that we needed to remodel this office."
"No," she groaned peeking in. It was a shambles. There was no possible way
she could get anything done in there now. "How long is this going to
take?"
"Just a couple of days, sir," he said smiling. "We should be done before
we get back to Epsilon."
Krysa threw up her hands in frustration, "A couple of day!" She sighed,
"Great... just great..." She turned leaving the workman wondered why he
always had to deal with the uptight officers.
She wasn't ready to head back to her quarters yet, so as so many who had
no where else to go, she found herself in Bat's domain, staring at the stars
as they went by.
Bat had watched her for a while before wandering over behind her, "I'm
glad to see you relaxing."
Krysa looked at him, "I'm not. I'd much rather be keeping busy, but my
shift is over and for some reason my office is being remodeled and I can't get
in there."
Bat chuckled, "Hmm, now I wonder who did that?"
She frowned at the barkeep, "I don't know, but if I ever find out there
will be hell to pay."
"Just for doing something nice for you?"
Krysa sighed, "Oh Bat. What am I going to do?"
The older man took a seat next to the woman, "You just have to go on."
"I just... feel... so incredibly guilty. If I hadn't married him... If I
hadn't insisted on staying here on the FEYNMAN... He deserved so much
more."
The tears that she had held back while fulfilling her responsibilities to
the ship finally began to trickled down her face. And when the dam burst,
Bat was there to catch her. Once this part of her grief was over, the rest
would be all the easier.
Regards,<br>
Lt. Krysa Jenn<br>

NRPG: First I hope this is what you had planned to save the ship :) I
thought it worked. Second, I hope you don't mind Krysa getting a remodeled
office, but I had to find a way to keep her from throwing herself back
into her work :) And third, Andy, I hope I played Bat alright :)

"I was a little curious as to why you held back for so long. The
fact that Starfleet sends a SOLAR class, AGAMEMNON and two STORM class
vessels points to the fact that you expected we'd be attacked."
Tremaine remained silent.
"I haven't heard of the PHOENIX or your escorts what fleet are you
from?"
"Commander, I'm under orders and those orders do not include
answering the questions of the CO of a tin-can out on the periphery. I
will disperse my ships to aid in the spread of the antidote and then be on
my way." The face of the Captain was replaced by the starfield.
"Well, I have to admit I'd like to meet him in a dark alley one
day."
Maril smiled sympathetically. "Look at the size of that monster!"
Both men watched the task force split.
"Well you keep saving the galaxy and one day you'll have one."
Zane replied.
"What about you, Captain?"
"No I can't see taking a SOLAR class, a command cruiser means you
have a task force commander or perhaps even the Admiral breathing down
your neck all that time. Besides that third nacelle really detracts from
the beauty. Looks like they backed in to another ship!"
Zane sat back and enjoyed the conversation. It was nice to be
able to just 'talk' with his friend without staring the death of billions
in the face, as well as his own.
"Sir, the PHOENIX signals ready."
"Proceed with transport." Zane ordered.
"What about an AGAMEMNON? You security types always like big
guns. She certainly fits the bill." Maril asked as he carefully
monitored the operation on his console.
"Hmmmm. It would be nice to not have to tuck our tails between
our legs. But I came out here to explore not become the Federation's 'Big
Stick'"
"Well, you must see something doen the line. Its getting rough
out here and these aren't the safest ships to be in."
"Hey she can hold her own. But..." He stroked the arm rest
affectionately, feeling a little guilty for considering another. "...an
ENDEAVOUR has a nice balance between brains and brawn."
Both men smiled, satisfied with the mission's outcome as their
thoughts drifted towards the future.
"PHOENIX signals operation concluded. They're warping out."
"Sensors show the compound has been dispersed through the RING's
atmosphere. By the time the USS BANTING arrives the entire Ring should be
plague free." Maril confirmed as he read the readouts.
"Excellent. Helm take us home."

in quite a while, it seemed, LTJG Jerran Terel sat back and listened to
the CO and FO bantar back and forth about the various advantages of
commanding one vessel over another. Jerran had never really thought of it
himself, commanding a vessel of his own, that is, but he did agree that
the ENDEAVOUR class starship was a decent mixture of size, speed, power,
and research facilities. But, he did have to admit that there was a
certain alure to the idea of commanding something like a VALHALLA class
warship, something with both speed and firepower, so much so that it was
constantly trying to tear itself apart just to get out of spacedock.
This entire train of though came as very much a surprise to the FCO. Even
a few short months ago upon graduation from the academy, he had never
really aspired to command. He thought he would never be sattisfied with
being stationed on a starship unless he was sitting at the helm. At most,
he had thought that he might one day try for CAG (commander air group) on
one of the carriers. But, untill this mission, he had never given much
thought to commanding a ship of his own.
In this past mission alone, CMDR Zane had given him so many oppurtunities
to take command of the ship, what with LTCDR Maril and LT Jenn constantly
on the ring, that he had found that he had actually enjoyed those brief
stints at the conn. Oh, sure, he had always had the oppurtunity to take
the conn before, after he had passed the bridge officer's test a couple of
months ago. But, this was somehow quite different, when the Captain would
turn to him in the middle of ALPHA shift and say, "Take the conn," or "Mr.
Jerran, you have the bridge." Even his logical Vulcan half could
acknowledge the sense of pride this sent rushing through him when he would
go to sit at the command chair, and now he was looking forward to his duty
officer shifts much more than usual. More than that, though, he was
looking forward to the future, when he would someday command his own
starship.
He watched on the nav scanner display on his console as the ring receded
behind them, along with the plague, the Cardassians, the Order. They
hadn't caught the rest of the Order operatives who had attacke the camp,
so it was a sure bet they would encounter them again someday. Jerran was
still puzzled as to how the one opperative was able to resemble their own
second officer so well, but decided that it was probably just some sort of
cosmetic alteration designed so that they would be able to infiltrate the
FEYNMAN, and it almost worked, too.
"What's our ETA to EPSILON, helm?" came the Captain's voice from behind,
interrupting Jerran's train of thought.
Without skipping a beat, the FCO replied, "22 hours, fifteen minutes,
sir."
"Very good," the CO said, thinking how glad he was that the FCO had
stopped displaying that most Vulcan habit of reciting figures down to
extensive decimal places.
The next couple of hours was fairly routine as the FEYNMAN headed toward
EPSILON at warp speed. At 1415, the beta shift came to relieve the
current bridge crew. Jerran gave the helm up, reluctantly as usual, to
Midshipman Talo and headed for the turbolift. On his way to his quarters,
he met up with ENS Cartwright who greeted him with a smile and followed
him down the corridor.
"So, what are you going to call it?" she said as they entered his room and
she plopped herself down on his couch in front of the window.
"Call what?" he said with a smile as he walked over to the replicator and
ordered a couple cups of raktageno, handing one to her as he returned and
sat down next to her.
"That maneuver you did, silly. Everyone on the entire ship is talking
about how you saved the day! I was thinking of something on the lines of
the Jerran Variant to the Picard Maneuver, but I can't exactly see someone
order something that takes that long to say in a crisis situation. And so
I decided that it should be simply called the Jerran Maneuver."
He chuckled as he took a sip of the raktageno and said, "Oh, you decided.
And what about Admiral Picard? No mention of his tactic from which this
derives?"
"Wel, I guess we could let it be known by the long version in the
textbooks, and the short version by practice. That way, everyone's happy,
and you get the first notch of success in what will surely become as great
if not better a better carreer. They'll remember you in one breath with
all the other great Captain's in history, Christopher, Kirk, Sulu, Picard,
and Jerran!"
"Aren't you getting a bit carried away? I haven't even gotten my second
full pip yet and you're already sitting me in the Captain's Hall of Fame,"
he said with a slight smile, thinking about the train of thought he had a
couple of hours ago about his ambitions toward command.
She sighed, exhasperated at the Vulcan humility he insisted on expressing
every chance he got and said, "I suppose your right. I'm just proud of
you." She took a sip of her drink as she pulled off her boots and pulled
her feet up onto the couch.
He leaned over and stole a kiss from her and said, "Yes, I know, and I
appreciate it."
She smiled back at him and said, "So, what's for dinner? Will you make me
some hasparat? The replicators do no justice to your mother's recipe."
"Sure," he said with a slight chuckle. "But first, there's something I
have to attend to real quick." He walked back to his room and returned
with the ceremonial lantern he had used during his mourning of Kalani's
death.
"Oh," Jennifer said, understanding her friend completely, and
acknowledgin that understanding with one simple word. "I'm sure she'll
appreciate it very much."
Jerran nodded and said, "It's the least I could do after the way she
helped me get over the death of Kalani. Now it is my turn to repay the
debt."
He then walked out and headed down the hall a short ways till he reached
LT Jenn's quarters.. Luckily, no one answered when he activated the
buzzer, so he keyed in his security code and opened the door, staying just
long enough to place the lantern in the center of the room, along with a
PADD containing the words to the Bajoran death chant.
He returned to his quarters and said, "Now, to the hasparat," a slight
smile crossing his face as he looked over at ENS Cartwright sitting on the
couch.

So, which way is EPSILON again? It's been so long since we've been back
there that I had almost forgotten ;)
Kristin: I hope Krysa has a few hours to spare, cause she's gonna need it
for that death chant ;)

"Damn pilots... always <grunt> pushing the envelope..... but
never seem to... <argh>."
Worried about inturrupting the CEO, Ens. Jerrad meekly
pipes up in what was supposed to be an assertive voice, but ends
up rather mousish.
"Sir, umm.. are you all right... sir?"
Koreth dosen't even look back, "Fine ensign. Just fine." more than a
note of sarcasm is evident. "Mr. Jerran and his 'JERRAN MANEUVER'
nearly blew all the inertial dampeners.... <grunt>."
The partial klingon tries again to fit into a spot that was definately intended
for someone smaller. Finally Koreth crawls back out.
"Mr. Jerrad your new job is to replace the biocircuts in these confounded
cubby holes they call 'pathways' and get the primary dampeners back on line."
"Aye sir." The ACEO nearly dives in.
<nowiki><Blee boop......Zane to Koreth></nowiki>
"Koreth here."
<nowiki><I have a little addition I'd like you to start considering for the bridge
Mr. Koreth... if you could meet with me. It's not priority.></nowiki>
Tarrant turns and looks back into the tube where the smaller Jerrad is
working away.
'The choices are just staggering'
"Aye sir, on my way."
15 minutes later...............<br>
Scene: Captain's Ready Room<br>
".... so you see Lieutenant, I want something more authoritative. I'm
no interior decorator, but I need something that gives me a clearer view
of everything and that says.... *CAPTAIN*."
The CEO looks at Zane trying to determine if he's truly serious.
Starting slowly Tarrant begins speaking, "Well... I guess we can break
a few rules concerning alteration of ship bridges and do it... but I'll
have to wait till we get back at Epsilon..."
"Excellent Lieutenant. "

Anything else Captain?
As for that crack about the SOLAR class looking like it backed
into something... I haven't forgotten that.
