Anastasia (Stazi, for short) was devastated by her mother’s death two years ago, and it was that event that prompted her to return to Starfleet.  Like both of her parents, she is a gifted historian and archaeologist, and is actively involved in a project with her adopted father which if correct, would prove that the ancient Egyptians smelted iron, which would move the iron-age back another 1800 years from current scholarship.

More recently, she was involved in the USS Constellation’s mission to Pisces R4, a Preserver planet with Bronze-age societies equivalent to those of Earth in the 5th century BCE.  While on that mission, she was captured by the Romulan “gods” where she was beaten, raped and tortured nearly to death.   

Karatova has most of the skills required of her profession, and a few that wouldn’t normally be considered as part of it.  In addition to the scientific and historical background, she is also an excellent climber (and spelunker), diver and while not formally trained as such, could almost pass as a structural engineer (very handy to keep alive in ancient ruins).

Anastasia Karatova, while in excellent health for her age overall, has suffered many serious injuries during her ordeal with the Romulans.  Her left knee was shattered as was her left elbow and wrist.  While the bones were repaired, much of the damage of the cartilage could not be, permanently restricting her range of motion and strength in those joints.

She also suffered nerve damage to her left arm, greatly reducing her sense of touch and ability to feel, pain, texture and temperature in that arm.

A minor skull fracture has been repaired, but she complains of occasional migranes and has distorted vision from her left eye.  While the migranes have not yet been identified, the problems with the eye were traced to a damaged optic nerve, which Karatova refused surgery to correct.

Since Commander Karatova passed her physical fitness test and meets all Starfleet physical standards, I reluctantly clear her for Starship duty.

Anastasia Karatova is quite different than the young men and women who typically come through here, on account of being (much) older, and possessing a far higher level of education as well.

Despite her lofty degrees, Dr. Karatova is a very down-to-earth sort of person, who should have no trouble adapting back to shipboard life.

I am concerned about her recent ordeal with the Romulans, however the file on that entire mission is classified and Karatova refuses to discuss the matter.

While she is very well educated, Anastasia has not really lost the streak of craziness than anyone would need to spend days or even weeks crawling around in 6,000-year-old tombs.

She is rather secretive, and tends to be introverted.  This is in sharp contrast to the way people remember her, and is a direct reaction to the death of her mother, which occurred on a dig in the ancient Assyrian ruins of Nineveh, just outside of modern-day Baghdad.  Ekaterina Karatova died while descending into an annex to the ancient library, an area that Anastasia had descended and determined safe the previous day, so she blames herself for her mother’s death.

  Hadley Jones was born on Earth's Antarctic shelf, the son of a  

physician and a nuclear chemist.  As a child, he showed an exceptional

aptitude towards memorization.  As such, his parents taught him to

read at an early age, subsequently force-feeding him with every book,

  Hadley Jones is both blessed and cursed with a near-perfect

memory.  Although the mechanism is not completely understood, it's

believed that he was born with a metabolism deficiency in his short-

term memory.  As a result, all of his sensory inputs are immediately

shunted to his long-term memory--in essence, he suffers from an

inability to forget.  On the positive side, he remembers everything

stable than the norm.  Due to his unusual mental ability, his
