Notes:

KRONSHTADT is the first starship in the Federation to carry a new
generation of combat shuttles. The shuttles themselves are a radical
departure from conventional subspace propulsion concepts in the Federation.
And the ship has been build to accommodate these new craft.

KRONSHTADT had an eventful progression to full operational status.

In May 2410, ODGREEN FLEET approved production of new class starship, the
ABIAKA class to address the inadequacies of the BOGUE-class escort
carrier. Production of the ship began in October 2411, based on the
spaceframe of the COVENTRY-class destroyer prototype which was already
under development. In August 2412, political pressure from Earth-based
dissidents was brought to bear on Star Fleet to recognize civilian workers
demands for better working and living conditions. Odgreen Fleet was
tasked with negotiating settlement of workers demands. In October 2412,
the settlement negotiated with dissident civilian workers included a name
change for the new vessel to USS KRONSHTADT, in memory of the Kronshtadt
Uprising of 1921.

In March 2413, Captain Ilya Karasov is named USS KRONSHTADT's first
captain and the ship begins a series of shakedown cruises along the
patrols routes between SB DELTA and SB KENAI. In July 2413, USS
KRONSHTADT is sent to assist a civilian convoy of colonial settlers that
issued a distress signal. KRONSHTADT rescues those who are injured when
saboteurs detonate a bomb in one of the civilian ships, and prevents the
saboteurs from crippling the convoy. Members of KRONSHTADT successfully
apprehend the saboteurs and assist with repairs to the disabled ships,
enabling the convoy to continue on its way. Trials are extended while
attempting to wait for the delayed new combat shuttles for which the ship
has been designed.

In October 2413, Star Fleet consolidates operations in GREEN FLEET and
ODGREEN FLEET. Odgreen Fleet becomes a division within Green Fleet.
Vice Admiral Bud Palmolive retires as CINC of ODGREEN and retires from the
Star Fleet. Commodore Taos Numminen is named as Division Commander of
ODGREEN DIVISION.

In July 2414, USS KRONSHTADT is transferred to operational status as
little more than a large destroyer, still without her combat shuttle wing.
Commander George Armstrong Quintala, formerly XO under Karasov, is given
command of USS KRONSHTADT. USS KRONSHTADT, based out of SB KENAI, begins
patrolling the Klingon border with Green Fleet space.

In February 2416, KRONSHTADT returns to SB KENAI prior to being redeployed
out at Deep Space 4. Commander Quintala requests he be replaced as
Captain of the ship as he does not want to be transferred so far from
Earth. Days later, Commander McCracken is assigned to command USS
KRONSHTADT and begins the journey to DS4, where the ship will be taking on
a new Marine infantry platoon and a new Marine combat shuttle wing to
finally bring the ship to her designed operational capabilities. She
enters fully operational service in March 2416.

While KRONSHTADT herself uses a conventional impulse drive system, a
fusion powered ion reaction drive, her craft use a new gravitic propulsion
system. The drive is inspired by the systems employed by the Kzinti and
Dalriada. Decades ago, during the Earth-Kzinti wars, the propulsion
systems were captured and even utilized in some human craft because of
their efficiency relative to the reaction drives of the time. However,
the advent of warp drive technology as a practical means of interstellar
travel led humanity to abandon the bulky drives then in use in the
Patriarchy. In 2410, the brief Dalriadan War showed the Federation the
dangers of a civilization using a modern gravitic drive system. The drive
systems of the Dalriada were sleek and efficient, allowing higher
accelerations and lower vessel mass. After the conflict, as part of the
plans to counter the potential Dalriadan threat, the Federation began work
in earnest on a gravitic drive system for its own starships. The
scientists on the project quickly realized that ultra-heavy elements were
the key to the drive system. With no natural sources, they sought to
engineer longer-lived versions of known ultra-heavy elements. At present,
the limited availability of the artificial super-heavy elements needed to
be synthesized to allow the drive to function limits the use of the new
drives to such small vehicles as the combat shuttles which KRONSHTADT and
her sisters carry.

KRONSHTADT shares many features with both of the other standard Federation
carriers, BOGUE and STARFALL. She has down-swept nacelles allowing for a
dorsally mounted sensor pod which contains electronics specialized for the
command and control of multiple small craft. Like all carriers, she is
intended to stand off from any conflict and control her combat shuttles in
patrol operations and actions in atmosphere or against multiple small
targets in space rather than directly confront other starships. As such,
she carriers armament comparable to a destroyer. However, since she could
potentially come into conflict with a pulverizer-missile armed Dalriadan
warship with the huge standoff range of these missiles, she has been
outfitted with the latest generation of point defense weaponry. This
weaponry has the additional advantage of being able to efficiently engage
opposing small craft that might penetrate to the carrier.

Because of the new drive system, the shuttles must be pushed clear of the
hull before bringing their own drives to full power. This creates a
vulnerability when they are deployed from a conventional carrier. As
such, the KRONSHTADT has been outfitted with laterally-mounted linear
accelerators which serve as launch tubes. These literally fire the
shuttles out of the side of the ship. Since the shuttle's own drive is on
standby, they have limited inertial compensation during this phase so
accelerations are limited, but it does push them well clear of the hull
more efficiently than using tractor beams. Should the tubes be damaged,
it is possible to deploy the shuttles through the aft recovery doors by
using tractor beams. However, this operation is much slower.

KRONSHTADT's specifications make her in many ways similar to the other
escort carrier in service, BOGUE. However, unlike the BOGUE which was a
design converted from existing military transport command fast freighter,
she is a purpose-build vessel. This means that her internal layout is
much more efficient than the BOGUE and all of her internal fittings are
dedicated to the role of carrier. In this way, she is much more like a
STARFALL-class fleet carrier writ small. This, however, actually allows
KRONSHTADT to be efficient to deploy in much greater numbers than the
massive, and massively expensive, fleet carriers.
