* Only certain Sh'marii have these physical characteristics, and always in combination with each other. Those few who are born with these two traits invariably begin to manifest telepathic abilities during adolescence.  Only this small percentage of the population has these abilities, so the Sh'marii are not a "telepathic species" as such, like the Vulcans and Betazoids are.

II.    EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

All previous education was among her people. The Sh'marii do not have purely institutionalized education in the way the Federation does.  Sh'marii children between the ages of 5 and 13 are taught the basics, usually from some adult within their clan who is qualified as a teacher.  At the age of 13, the young person chooses (with the help of teacher, parents, etc, and based on their own particular talents/interests) what profession/type of work/etc they want to pursue.  They are then apprenticed to an adult in that career field, and basically learn by doing under supervision.  For Lenara, that choice was to be of assistance to those in need of psychological/emotional help. As a telepath once her latent abilities began to emerge) she felt this could be an advantage in helping others. And as it worked out, Lenara reached the age of choosing just after the Sh'marii settled on their new home.

III.    BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
==========================
The Sh'marii original homeworld lies well outside of current Federation territory.  Approximately 25 years ago, they decided to abandon it as the only way to escape being periodically raided by slavers; the Sh'marii, being pacifistic by nature, lacked the military capacity to fight them off, but at the same time were unwilling to merely submit to having a few hundred or a few thousand of their people abducted every 50 years or so.  

(There had been several such previously)

Lenara was 3 when her people left their homeworld, and they were in space for nearly a decade before they entered Federation territory.   After the diplomatic issues were worked out between the Sh'marii leadership and Federation representatives, a suitable previously uninhabited planet was turned over to them and the Sh'marii reestablished their society as best they could.  

When Lenara was about 18, she decided that she wanted to do more than merely serve her own people.  She wanted to learn more about the Federation that had welcomed her people, and perhaps be able to help other races as the Federation had helped hers.  This led her to seek admittance to Starfleet Academy
