Born and raised in rural Britain Arthur Hyde was a bright boy. Bright enough to be 
accepted into the Cambridge University where he studied medicine. Bright enough to 
have dreams that went even beyond elite college and beyond setting up shop up as a 
country doctor in Herefordshire or perhaps in London.

Right after taking the Hippocratic oath he went straight for San Francisco and applied 
for Starfleet Academy, already 22 years old but bringing his completed medical 
education to the table. 

Arthur hated the next four years of uniforms and drills and discipline. He strongly 
disliked especially the latter, unless it was self-imposed.

For three years on the FALSTAFF he was the lowliest life form in the medical world 
- an intern - until he was sent to SF Medical Academy to comlete and broaden his 
professional skills.

Arthur did well there and fell for a pair of sparkling brown eyes and wheat-colored 
hair both belonging to nurse Anne Bale.

They got married the same day Arthur received his final diploma from the Medical 
Academy.

For the next eighteen years the couple rotated together through various assignments 
first as doctor and nurse later as doctor and doctor until Cassiopeia was born in 2399 
aboard the NORTH CAROLINA and Anne retired from active practice to raise the girl.

Professionally Arthur saw a lot of carnage on the battleships he served on. Except 
for a five-years stint as instructor back on Medical Academy he seemed type-cast for 
military vessels. Still, personally it was a wonderful time.

Until Anne Hyde was diagnosed with Iverson's disease.

She never asked for anything but Arthur knew of course that life on a Starfleet was 
not conductive to stabilizing her deteriorating condition. 

He could have requested a desk job somewhere on a planet but Arthur went a step 
further.

Now he became the country doctor he didn't want to be in his early life. He treated 
his patients to the best of his ability, dispensing medication along with a piece of 
rugged wisdom here and there. Often his patients were left wondering what tasted 
more bitter but in the end they found themselves cured. Every free minute with Anne 
or working on a cure for Iverson's, futile as it seemed. For a while the fresh 
country air seemed to help. But in the end it was futile. As a doctor it was double 
painful for him to watch Anne waste away. No amount of medical training could prepare 
him for her eventual death.

After the funeral Arthur vanished as if the Earth had swallowed him up. It took his 
daughter almost two weeks to find him again in a cabin on Mount Snowdon.

She yelled at him. Then they talked for hours and hours. Arthur emerged from the 
cabin with a new-found sense of life.

The next day he contacted Starfleet again and as it turned out Starfleet had an 
assignment for an aging country doctor.
