B. Background Summary:
----------------------
Growing up in a society marked by a mix of suspicion and honour,
Kael Aravek had one great advantage--his father's rank and
outstanding military record--and one great disadvantage--the
fact that his maternal grandmother was not Romulan but Vulcan, a
former member of the Federation's embassy staff.
Thanks to his father's position and influence, Kael had
the best schooling and the most privileged upbringing possible
for a non-senatorial family. But his mixed heritage brought
complications, not least the stringent and painful screening to
identify whether he possessed telepathic abilities due to his
Vulcan roots, and the scornful looks of his classmates.
After graduation from the prestigious Asheran Naval
Institute, Kael was commissioned as an intelligence officer
aboard a scout-ship, the VICERA, part of the Tamolak Battle
Group, where he served with distinction in several minor
conflicts against the Klingons, Gorn and Tholians.
In 2412 his father was exposed as a pro-Unification
activist by none other than Kael's younger brother, Marus.
Taking the elder Aravek's long service into account, the
military tribunal offered him permanent exile rather than
imposing a death penalty. Kael chose to accompany his parents
into the Federation, whereas Marus received a promotion for
exposing an enemy of the state and remained behind.
Upon arriving in Federation space, the Araveks were
taken into custody and debriefed by Star Fleet Intelligence,
before being offered a new home on Vulcan. Kael enquired about
the possibility of joining Star Fleet, and was told that this
would be possible if he could find a sponsor; this he did,
gaining the support of a retired Star Fleet captain, Sulok.
To his parents' surprise, Kael enrolled in Star Fleet's
Medical School rather than the OCS, reasoning that as a doctor
he would be less likely to be directly involved in combat
against Romulan forces, some of whom could be his childhood
friends. His application was successful, and after graduation,
Kael spent two years as a resident on Betazed before his first
fleet assignment.

C. Personality Summary:
-----------------------

"Romulans have always struck me as proud and arrogant; Dr Aravek
possesses those traits to some degree, though his years here in
the Federation seem to have blunted the sharp edges of his
character. He does not suffer fools gladly, but is capable of
appreciating the good qualities of others, and does not expect
his staff to work any harder than he himself is prepared to.
"His sense of humour is somewhat quirky. By way of an
example, I asked him why he was cross-training into medical,
since his Romulan training was in intelligence and more direct
military matters. His answer was: 'I have experienced betrayal
before, Counsellor; I therefore prefer to be the only person
aboard ship with unrestricted access to all the poisons.'
"He refused to participate in SF Med School's aerobatics
team despite repeated invitations; reason given: 'I have flown
combat missions upon which people have died. That had value. But
there is no glory to be found in self-imposed danger, or foolish
antics to please a crowd.' So it seems that his experiences in
the Romulan military have left some psychological scars.
"However, my only real concern is that he seems rather
remote towards his colleagues. I am aware of only one or two
other students who could accurately describe themselves as his
friends (both Vulcans, as it happens), and it took me longer to
get any kind of personal information out of him than from any
other student I have attempted to counsel in my whole career. He
plays his cards close to his chest, and gives little away.
"That said, he is certainly a very capable doctor, and I
would trust him to treat me. I don't say that lightly."
-- Dr Evius Colea, Counsellor, SF Med School

V. Skills Profile
==================

At the Asheran Naval Institute, Kael was trained in intelligence
techniques involving the acquisition, interpretation and
analysis of data from numerous sources; these skills have been
adapted to serve his new role as a doctor. His medical knowledge
is excellent, his "bedside manner" less so (some patients have
described him as frosty, which is largely accurate).
As part of his training and service in the Romulan Navy,
Kael acquired a broad military skill set, including armed and
unarmed combat, small-unit and naval tactics, and combat
piloting (of which he has had practical experience, including
flying shuttlecraft behind enemy lines on insertion/extraction
missions).

VI. Recent Fitness Reports
==========================

"He broke my fingers! Son-of-a-[expletive] broke my [expletive]
fingers!"
-- Staff Sergeant Luther Fripp, PT Instructor, SF Med School

"Subject possesses superb reflexes and endurance. No concerns.
Passed fit for duty."
-- Dr Mikhail Rodenko, SF Med School

VIII. Current Recreational Interests
==================================

Kael is an excellent pianist, having taken up playing this
peculiarly human instrument since becoming a Federation citizen
and finding a natural aptitude for it.
In addition to his fascination with the piano, Kael
practices a Romulan martial arts, particularly Kol'Na, a combat
form which combines painful locks and holds with efficient
defensive maneuvers. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he has had
difficulty finding real sparring partners, and so must make do
with holodeck simulations.

IX. Miscelleneous Information
=============================

Maternal Grandparents:
Grandfather: Nerus Tariok, diplomat; d. 2391
Grandmother: Laarik of Vulcan, Federation cultural
secretary; d. 2403

Paternal Grandparents:
Grandfather: Vorian Aravak, GENERAL, Tal Shiar; d. 2399
Grandmother: Lyra Aravek, home-maker; d. 2408

Tests negative for telepathic abilities; appears unreadable to
telepaths and empaths, perhaps as a result of Romulan military
training.

Still has his old Romulan Navy disruptor pistol and PaDD. He
maintains these scrupulously, and carries them in preference to
Star Fleet gear.

---------------------End Bio chip-------------------------------

NRPG: Kael does possess some telepathic potential, inherited
from his Vulcan maternal grandmother; however, this is largely
undeveloped, save for training in hiding his talent from
telepathic probes. As a result, while he generally tends to "get
a feeling for" people and their emotional state, he currently
has no capability to read or transmit thoughts. Attempts to
"diagnose" him as possessing telepathic power fail utterly,
giving the impression that, like most Romulans, he does not
possess any such power. If he were able to find a skilled
telepath he could trust, his talents could be harnessed more
usefully.
