TACFLEET Notes

If there was an urgent agenda behind the development of new warp technologies over recent years, then the subtitle to the design brief would have been 'Beat QoghvaQ!'

The newest and fastest vessel in the Klingon Defense Force (barring the few post-prototype DujHoH-class) these ships are dangerous in the extreme. Unfortunately for the KDF, the lethal threat posed by these vessels to potential foe is weakened: this enlarged, sleeker, K'Vort evolution design is proving extremely unreliable in service.

Formidable when running within normal parameters, these ships were designed around the latest variant of the reactor core found in the much larger Vor'cha Attack Cruisers. While the powerplant allows plentiful power for the ship systems and weapons arrays, the revised cradle superstructure in which it sits was underengineered, and the consequences under stress conditions have been found to be deadly. At least one G12-Class QoghvaQ Bird-of-Prey has been known to have been destroyed due to Magnetic Constriction Segment misalignment, with subsequent plasma conduit rupture and avalanche failure of the M/AM reaction.

The existance of a more robust G13 variant has yet to be confirmed by TACFLEET intelligence.

Otherwise, reports of the largest yet Bird-Of-Prey type vessel are that of an extremely fast and deadly interceptor. In normal cruise, the QoghhvaQ is capable of matching the warp seven only recently achieved by the new generation of SF vessels, and only these vessels (with their unique M/AM cores) can outrun the QoghvaQ. Low warp and impulse acceleration has been limited only by SIF/IDF design, and the four vaQHugh impulse drives, while crude, have massive total throughput.

Weapons are of typical specification. StarFleet Engineering were surprised to note that the maximum range achieved by revised Class 10 Crystal Phase Disruptors was over three-hundred thousand kilometres. Further intelligence suggests this is achieved with a reduction in beam strength, but this has not been confirmed. If this is so, these weapons are similar in ideal to the long-range electro-plasma discharge weapons of Ferengi Marauders, to surprise and erode the shields of an adversary before close range attack with the pulse cannons.

QoghvaQ Battle Cruisers are theoretically capable of atmospheric flight, but sheer size prohibits low-level flight and safe landing. An emergency landing would be comparitivly painless, but whether the vessel would successfully return to orbit would be doubtful. Failure in the SIF/IDF units would cause the hull to buckle under a 1.4g+ sustained absolute acceleration.

Much thought has been given to support craft with this Bird-of-Prey, and all vessels are docked in special recesses with airlock access. This eliminates the need for extensive forcefielding around a large vulnerable access port. The ship carries a small wing of jach orbital superiority fighters and a Mogh runabout in addition to four shuttlepods. The availability of such vessels lends a complex multi-role capability to an already extremely flexible vessel.
