NOTES
=====
The CONSTITUTION-class heavy cruiser was the most advanced warship of its day.
However, there are some striking differences between the CONSTITUTION-class
starships familiar to history and those of the Alternate Timeline of ORIGINS.
First among them is the commissioning dates: though these ships were 
commissioned in the 2240's in the prime universe, they were not commissioned
until over a decade later in thr AT universe.  This is one of the first notable
effects of Nero's contamination of the timeline, though the reasons for such
a change are still being studied.

The AT version of the starship is several times larger than its Prime counter-
part, more than three times as heavy, and having over twice as many officers
and crew on board.  This may well be a result of the "delay" in the class'
commissioning: it is speculated that the design underwent drastic changes
while still in the design stage, causing the construction to start over and
take longer.

And though her official job description may be "explorer," everything about
the AT design screams "warship": larger, more advanced phaser systems more
numerous in number; deadlier photon torpedoes, and the incorporation of the
first real point defense system in Starfleet.  Clearly, whetever the impetus
for Starfleet's delay in commissioning the class, it was motivated by the
desire to create a stronger, more powerful starship.
