Naming Conventions
The naming conventions for the major classes of ships in Federation service are listed below.

| Newton | famous scientists |
| Miranda | Shakespearean heroines or "classic" British wet-navy warships |
| Santa Maria | famous exploration vessels |
| Magellan | famous explorers |
| Bastion | defensive formations or famous fortifications |
