The Virginia class was designed as a complement to the Charon class in replacing the aging Pathfinder class as starfleet’s primary scouting vessels. Whereas the large exploration cruisers may do the bulk of initial discovery, they are not always able to follow up with detailed scouting expeditions to each recorded system. Like most new vessels, her sublight drive is a gravitic dynamic planing drive as pioneered on the Fearless-class heavy cruisers. She is the smallest ship so equipped to date, making her extremely nimble at sublight speeds. This gives her a higher combat efficiency than other ships of her relatively small size. Unlike her counterpart, the slightly older Charon-class the Virginia-class is unable to land on a planetary surface due to her design.
