>"Sir, the planet is hailing us."<br>
"Do we really want to know who's out there?" Krysa muttered.
Zane ignored the comment. "Lt. Jenn and Lt. Meleah, keep an eye on those
mines out there. "Lt. Jerran, keep us at a safe distance away from the
mines, and Ens. Allard, watch for anything unusual. Put the message on screen."
A chorused "Aye, sir" was heard as the officers acknowledged their orders.
As the picture of a rough looking man appeared on the viewscreen, and
announced himself, Meleah worked at her station to record information about
the mines, while also listening to the man on the screen behind her. The
mines were gradually closing formation as they determined the area in which
the ship could be. Eventually they would find the Feynman. But what if the
mines were somehow 'spirited' away. One couldn't be too sure with pirates
whether they were friendly or not, so it was always worth planning for all
eventualities. | |||
The mines, Meleah worked out, were set into place by the green beams that
had been displayed on the screen before. Therefore, they were unlikely to
be directly controlled by operators on the planet. So if their direction
was changed, the operators wouldn't be able to do much about it, unless
Meleah was underestimating their abilities. A short burst of a high
communications frequency would shatter the mines' controls, therefore
literally pushing them away from the ship.
She then turned her full attention back towards the viewscreen, where an
increasingly animated 'pirate' was talking.
"We don't have to explain our actions to anyone, least of all
Starfleet," he said, the last word being twisted with hatred. "If you don't
leave now, we'll escort you," leaving no doubt as to how they would escort
the Feynman. | |||
"Look, we didn't come here..." Zane broke off as the viewscreen
reverted back to the view of the planet.
"Nice fellow," Allard stated under his breath.
"One minute until the mines reach our shields, Cmdr," said Krysa.
"Cmdr, I believe I can reverse the mines away from the Feynman by
emitting a short, high-frequency transmission which will cause the computers
within the mines to malfunction," Meleah spoke up.
"It had better work. Mr. Allard, emit a high, short frequency burst
far enough out to disable the mines."
"Aye, sir." The crew watched as J.C. pressed a control to emit that
burst. Nothing seemed to happen for few seconds, then Krysa said, "Cmdr,
the mines have stopped and some seem to be drifting away."
Sincerely yours,<br> | |||
