Needless to say, this was not looking to be a very good day at all for
the Captain and crew of the USS FEYNMAN. CMDR Zane paced back and forth
in front of the command arena on the bridge of the FEYNMAN as LTJG Jerran
listened to a report over the comlink from WO Dunnon. First, the
prisoners from the Order had escaped, and now one of them was apparently
holding the crew of the Panarik freighter convoy hostage while other
groups had just killed not only a couple of the FEYNMAN's own security
guards, but also a civilian, something which, as Captain of a Federation
starship, Zane felt completely responsible for. And not just any
civilian, either, but the husband of his own OPS officer.
<They haven't changed course an inch, sir>, Zane heard WO Dunnon say over
the link to Jerran's console.
Jerran nodded from the helm and said, "Yes, that is indeed quite strange,
and they haven't even bothered to send out any sort of terrorist
demands. Have they detected you or the fighters, Dunnon?"
<Not yet, sir. Their fission drives give off so much radioactives that
they've got a pretty decent blind spot directly to their aft. With the
metaphasic shields on the shuttle and fighters, I'd say we can stay here
at least another six hours before we'd have to have a stay in Dr. Tox...
errr... Dr. Glin'kharr's radiation detox chamber.>
Jerran smiled slightly and said, "Alright. Keep yourselves nice and
quiet there, and we'll get back to you as soon as we find anything out.
FEYNMAN out."
The pilot turned to the Captain, who was already standing
behind him and looking over his shoulder and was about to convey the
report from WO Dunnon when the Captain just nodded and said, "I heard,
Mr. Jerran. It does sound odd indeed. No demands, no change of
flightplan. It's almost as if the Panarik freighters were expecting
company. Garrett, hail the lead freighter. I want to talk to Pentak."
"Channel open, sir."
"Panarik Freighter, this is the USS FEYNMAN, CMDR Zane speaking."
Captain Pentak's smilingly cordial face came on the screen and said,
<Greetings, Commander. What can we do for you?>
"I was just about to ask you a similar question, Captain. We have
heard... reports that there are some terrorists in the area who might
have been able to infiltrate your cargo ships. If there are any on board
your ship, we would like to talk to them so that we may avoid any further
bloodshed."
The Panarik captain's smile faided as a more nervous look crept in, <I...
uh... don't know what you're... uhhh... talking about, Commander. I
assure you that there are no... uhh... terrorists on this ship. Besides,
what would the terrorists gain by stealing a group of worthless, outdated
freighters carrying cargo that would only be fit for use by one group of
people?>
"My crew and I were wondering the same thing. The truth is, sir, that we
think that the terrorists are at this point, merely desperate for escape,
in any form, even if it means using a group of outdated freighters, just
as long as they make it to the ring. They already tried to escape to the
ring on a pair of our lifeboats. One of them was captured, while the
other is still missing. It couldn't have gotten far in the short time
that it has been gone, and your freighters are the closest place for them
to go."
A slight smile crept back to Pentak's face as he said, a bit less
nervously, <My crew and I will endevour to make sure that this convoy is
devoid of terrorists, Commander, and if we do find any, I'm sure that you
will be the first to know, as the humans say.>
"Thank you for your cooperation in this manner, then, Captain Pentak.
FEYNMAN out." Just as the screen returned to the view of the ring, Zane
turned to the other officers on the bridge and said, "Impressions?"
Jerran raised an eyebrow as he glanced at one of the nav scanner displays
on his console and said, "It doesn't take an empath to see that he's most
definitely hiding something, sir. It wouldn't be too much of a leap of
logic to suggest that Pentak is in fact hiding the Order terrorists."
Zane nodded as he went back to his seat, scratching his chin
thoughtfully, "I agree, Lieutenant. Now we just need to find a way to
prove it. Those fission drives that Dunnon mentioned, do you think they
could pose a potential hazard to the crew?"
"Possibly, sir. Fission drives fell out of disuse a couple of centuries
ago in most more advanced races just because they were so dangerous to
maintain and the fact that they posed such problems as heat and the
deadly raidation trail that theu leave in their wake. Only a few races
are known to use them now, those who can't afford to use much else. Even
the Bajora haven't used them since the war with the Cardassians ended 40
years ago."
"Dangerous enough to warrant the use of Regulation 13d?"
"Any civilian or military vessel within Federation space is subject to
mandatory health and safety inspections whenever docking at a Federation
aligned facility or whenever any officer of command grade on a Federation
starship has sufficient cause to suspect hazardous materials or
conditions on board said vessel," the FCO diligently quoted.
Zane smiled at his pilot's memory for regulations and said, "That's the
one, Lieutenant. I want you, Koreth, Cartwright, and a few security
officers to go over there on the NOGURA to conduct this `inspection'. I
want the security officers to have only type one phasers, and they should
also carry engineering field packs so they don't look like security
guards," the commander said, thinking of what a good thing it was that
both engineering and security wore the same colors.
"Aye, aye, sir," Jerran said as he got up from his console to go to the
shuttlebay.
<NRPG>
That's the good thing about playing Star Trek over the net rather than
making an episode of it on TV. You can use the shuttles whenever you
want because you don't have to worry about going over the special effects
budget on this episode ;)
