Vulnerable and sweet, she has an uncanny ability to disarm those around her. Her outward grace and staunch determination, however, hide the pain of a haunting loss. Since childhood, Serah has felt the night sky stir a wanderlust within her. Wishing to turn that yearning into a productive channel, she applied to Starfleet Academy. Her first attempt was turned down. But before the next round of applications she met a gentleman named Michael Taylor. Falling hard in love she put aside her plans in order to attended the local university with him. In her sophomore year, just weeks after Michael had proposed marriage, he died tragically in a land car accident. Serah mourned deeply. But with her love gone, she turned back to her dream of becoming a Starfleet officer. This time she was accepted into the Academy where she pursued the Communications track. Serah has been gifted with an uncanny aptitude for linguistics. She commands a passion to master as many as she can. Knowing that she will be most useful studying the linguistics of the UFP's adversaries, she has immersed herself in the both the language and history of the Klingons, Romulans, Orions, Gorn, and Nausicaans. Although Serah is an attractive young lady, she is currently too focused on her career and duties to consider the regular advances. Deep down, she feels she is not quite over the loss of Michael. But she always takes time to be with friends. In her spare time, she practices her singing and tennis. As a devout Christian, she attends worship services weekly whenever she is in port and studies privately when she is not. 1st Mission ----------- Serah Riley's first away mission proved horrifyingly traumatic. Agents of the Orion Syndicate abducted her at a backroom conference on Telani VII. While confined on a smuggling ship, she saw a fellow captive about to be raped by a over a dozen Orion crewmen. At great risk to herself, she lured in and incapacitated two of them with a pair of poisoned hairpins. She then used the guards' weapons to stun the other attackers. Shortly after delivering her charge to safety, Serah was kidnapped a second time by a rogue Section 31 agent named Captain Blake. The agent first stabbed and then shot her with a modified phaser that concealed a transporter beam that relocated her to a hidden shuttle. Five days later Serah was mysteriously beamed back aboard the LEXINGTON, her wounds almost healed and her memory of the stabbing seemily erased. Serah was awarded the Silver Star for her actions on the away mission. 2nd Mission ----------- Serah's second mission proved no less harrowing than her first. While the LEXINGTON ferried Romulan Ambassador Nanclus back to his homeworld, Serah found herself the primary suspect in his apparant assassination. Bizzarely, during a break in her interrogation, she was confronted by a future version of herself and teleported to a group of time traveling Vulcans. The Vulcans told Serah that they could only send her back to just before the assassination. They warned her that members of the senior staff may have been possessed by an alien entity, so she could not trust anyone. On her return, Serah hid the ambassador mere minutes before the attack while making it look like he had been killed. She also set sabotage devices so that when a cloaked Romulan warbird intercepted them, it would be able to send a signal to disrupt the LEX's shields and beam the ambassador to safety. Unfortunately, the LEX's Vulcan chief engineer, LT Shaav, found Serah, stalked her through the Jeffries Tubes, and eventually captured the terrified ensign. In order to determine what had happened to Nanclus, Shaav subjected Serah to a to a forced mind-meld. During the meld, Serah relived several key life memories including her last days with Michael and her supressed traumas on Telani VII at Blake's hand. To Serah's relief and anger, Shaav turned out to have been recruited by the known 31st Century time traveler LT Daniels. By the time of the meld, Daniels had already approached Captain Rafe, ensured the sabotage devices were removed, and then brought the involved parties to meet the hidden ambassador. On being confronted, Nanclus unexpectedly took Serah hostage and beamed away to the cloaked Romulan Warbird TERINAX. There Serah learned that the Ambassador had never been in any danger. The "assassination" had been a ruse to destabilize Federation-Romulan relations. The mastermind was a future version of Nanclus himself. This elder Nanclus and his ship came from a ruined Alpha Quadrant. He hoped to steer the Empire into a war that would see Romulus emerge strong enough to deal with the coming threats (presumably the Borg and Dominion). The younger Nanclus, however, did not agree with his elder's plan once its full implications had been disclosed. He was further revulsed by his older self's insistence on killing Serah who had done so much to further their plans. Conceiving a desperate plan to save them, the younger Nanlcus had Serah brought to him on the pretense that he would rape and then murder her. Already terrorized repeatedly by recent events, the threat of this final trauma pushed Serah beyond the breaking point even as Nanclus assured her that he would not harm her. The damage to her psyche was only compounded when by neccessity she helped Nanclus lure his older self to the room to slit his throat. Serah knew the older Nanclus was ultimately responsible for her suffering in the last 24 hours and thought she could take pleasure at watching his death. She was devestated to realize in that vengeful moment that she could never be the same person again. In an effort to redeem herself, she persuaded Nanclus not to torture the guard who had brought her in. Serah's compassionate gesture led Nanclus to first try convincing the captive Centurion to help him take over the ship and defuse the incident. Serah was returned to the LEXINGTON where she immediately attempted to resign her commission. Captain Rafe reluctantly allowed Lieutenant Daniels to take the battered Ensign back to the 31st Century where their advanced therapies could help heal the traumas that history had never meant for her to endure. Serah Riley returned to duty with her psychological symptoms under control. The lasting damage to her well-being remains unclear as of SD 2261.018. ========================================================================== IV.
